Michael Keaton then had a young energy.... He is now.... not so young
Beetlejuice has a diabolical edge to his wit. That's what Keaton needs to channel whenever he takes on that role.
Michael Keaton in an interview said that he had a great time making the film and that it was also nostalgia for him. He even got emotional about it... So, I don't know why you said he put in half the effort. He also said that it was very too hard to reprise the exact role because they all did not expect this film to be a cult classic back in the day. I think he is back as Beetlejuice. Michael Keaton will always have a hint of himself in each of his films. Just like Jack Nicholson as the Joker from Batman. Thats just my opinion. :)

I’m sure Keanu had a great time playing Ted in Face The Music but it didn’t translate into his performance. Winter on the other hand made it watchable just as it appears Ryder will make another BJ watchable.
Maybe Beetlejuice is suppose to be an ally instead of an enemy in this movie and that’s why he not as crazy. Maybe they’re purposely not showing us all the craziness so we’re not spoiled when we go see it. Then again, it could just be his age too.
Winona and Monica just like in Coppola's Dracula , this looks awesome , can't wait to see it

If anything Grace, I think Michael Keaton got back into it pretty well, so I don't think it's a problem. As I see it, it looks like it's gonna be fun!
This trailer felt very Ghostbusters Afterlife-ish, which I mean in good ways and bad ways

Michael Keaton doesn’t express the same energy that he did in the original but that is understandable given his age I am still very excited to see the movie in the future.
It’d be different if he was playing a mortal.
I know what you mean about Keaton, but honestly, it doesn't bother me too much. He's older, and Beetlejuice is a role that requires a ton of energy for basically every line, because he's so physically and vocally expressive. It would have been nice to have him exactly the same as he was 36 years ago, but I'm okay accepting that's not possible and enjoying what we do get from him.
Just because we seen a 2 min trailer dosent mean keaton didnt put his all in the movie! We got a couple scenes and maybe those scenes did not require full throttle moments. Im not going to make any judgements off of a trailer. Pretty excited to see it.

I think this looks really good. I really like the design for that dead lady in the black dress. She looks like a Frankensteined Morticia. It's a cool look.
I think it looks outstanding. It is referencing so many scenes and imagery from the original which makes it feel familiar and nostalgic. I will definitely make the effort to go see it. I want that 80s feeling with a contination of the story and original characters.

Just realized myself that other people pointed out: younger people won't understand some of the old school practical effects they are using.
Yeah MK is 72 years old and it shows, feels like old man Beetlejuice. Sure he will do a good enough job, but it doesn’t have the endless crazy energy that made the character so iconic.

How can you come to any sort of conclusion from a few snippets? I could only see energy and the same feel captured, but again can't make a whole judgement until I've seen the movie.
Lydia having the same bangs as when she was a teenager just makes me roll my eyes. It’s a small thing, I know, but come on.
Agreed! Takes me out of the fantasy of it all as if we would recognize Lydia without the haircut from the OG film. They could've been more creative with her look. Hope this film is better than the trailer leads on 🥸
Grace you have to keep in mind he's like decades older even Jim Carrey dialed it down eventually.

it looks like practical effects to me, and it's all the charm of the movie, i think they've gone for a lot of practical effects and stop motion like the original
Yes, people don't get that it is meant to have that rough and tumble aesthetic to it, not a polished Marvel movie look. Thats how they wanted the sequel to feel. It looks fun as hell, can't wait to be walking into the theatre for this! 😁
I reckon in context Beetlejuice will be more impactful. Im getting the same vibes as you, but from hearing how much Michael Keaton loved being back in the role, I think it will be better in scenes.

I couldn't quite put my finger on it either when it came to Michael Keaton in this trailer, but I think you nailed it right on the head.
This looks great. Super fun and I think I'll be watching for Winona as Lydia and Ortega as her daughter. That Leaton came back is also a big deal for me to watch this movie. But I have to agree it feels like his heart isn't in it, at least from what little is shown in this trailer. The entire cast looks excellent though👏👏👏👏
And I think at some point I'm gonna have to watch the complete first movie for the first time because in my entire life I've only caught bits and pieces on tv. And I've watched the Day-O musical number 10 times on TH-cam because I like the song😂 It was great hearing it during this trailer👍
Mattel's other doll line, Monster High, actually released Beetlejuice and Lydia dolls a while back.
Also, about good stuff coming this autumn: less than two weeks after this, Agatha All Along is starting. And then, of course, we're getting Joker 2 and if you still count Thanksgiving as autumn, then Wicked is also a fun addition. I know wicked isn't really that autumnal, but witches do go quite well with the season
My theory is they want to turn it into the live action version of the cartoon.

I think intentionally. The sand worm looks basically the same as it did in the original; I think they're going for the original 80s aesthetic so it's visually cohesive as a sequel rather than a reboot.

Beetlejuice has been one of my favorite movies since I was a child when my mom let me pick the movie I wanted at the Rental store! I think you may also be feeling the whole “nostalgia” feeling stuff because it’s clear they were like “let’s hit some jokes from the original just so everyone knows what’s up” but they are also trying to hide the main story points. I’m super excited and I’ll probably see it at least twice! Maybe they’ll do a double feature!

You're somewhat right but the whole point of a trailer is to sell the movie to people who are on the fence about seeing it. 😅 If they feel unsure about the trailer, that's their right to question if the film is worth spending time and money on. People who just want to see the movie will naturally ignore anything in the trailer or the trailer itself.
I agree about the "sometimes I think life is harder" line. ^^ Even as someone who hasn't seen the original (yet!!!), this does look quite fun.
The way he’s playing it is how his character became in the animated series.
I'm excited!!! Micheal has always been a comedian when he gets in that mood to be outrageously weird even off camera...It's just who he is as a person plus the guy is in his early seventies & it's awesome keaton decided to do another sequel. 🌹

Love the shirt, Grace! Unfortunately, this trailer didn't make me curious to check it out or even go watch the first movie (I've never seen it 😅). This trailer reminded me a lot of Burton's movies from the 2010s which I'm not really a fan of.
I think Keaton just needs to do the exaggerated voice more and it would sell it better. But I love Keaton and Beetlejuice, so I'll be there. :)

MK's whole "qualifications" speech in the original is Keaton being Keaton, be before the spell is broken by those "face monsters" (replicated in this trailer). I've tried to be more diplomatic, but we had a disagreement possibly 10 years ago over the idea he'd "ruined" his career in the nineties by not taking Batman Forever (of course his Birdman comeback has kept him on the A-list into his 70s now). I don't know, it kinda seems you're a little hard on the man for some reason. He's always brilliant. He'll be brilliant in this.

I'm personally very excited! I think the only thing I'll feel it's missing is Barbara and Alan. I get why they can't be in the film, but it does feel just a touch empty without them.

I don't appreciate all the speculation about Keaton's "energy" based on a two and a half minute trailer in which he has three lines. No one has seen the movie yet. It's like people, including this reviewer, are just looking for reasons to crap on this movie before it even premieres.

Early 80's "Night Shift" Keaton was actually that manic wildcard that was the OG Beetlejuice. Just like in real life, maybe the years has mellowed Beetlejuice a bit.

Interesting how Grace has a problem with Michael Keaton's acting, while I have a problem with Winona Ryder's acting. She doesn't feel like the same character from the first movie, but instead feels like her character from Stranger Things.
The character has had 37 years of life experience since we last saw her.... She doesnt feel like her character from Stranger Things thats just the most notable thing shes done in years and thats what u relate her to.
They should’ve had a trailer that somebody said Beetlejuice three times and it shows Michael Keaton and he says it’s Showtime
