  • The Whitby Goth Weekend (WGW) is an alternative music festival and gathering that takes place in the town of Whitby , North Yorkshire, England which features over 100 indoor stalls. It is held twice a year, once in spring and again in autumn. The event primarily caters to those who identify with the goth subculture, but it also attracts people interested in alternative fashion, music, and art.
It was founded in 1994 by Jo Hampshire and has grown to become one of the world’s premier Goth events.
The origins of the Whitby Goth Weekend date back to 1994 when a group of friends decided to hold a meet-up in Whitby, inspired by Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula," which features Whitby as a prominent setting. The event gained popularity over time and has grown into a significant event in the goth and alternative scene.
During the Whitby Goth Weekend, attendees can enjoy a variety of activities, including live music performances from both established and up-and-coming gothic and alternative bands. There are also DJ sets, club nights, and parties where people can dance and socialize. The festival often includes a range of additional events such as fashion shows, art exhibitions, and markets selling goth and alternative merchandise.
One of the highlights of the Whitby Goth Weekend is the tradition of the "Bizarre Bazaar," a large marketplace where attendees can purchase clothing, accessories, jewelry, artwork, and other items related to gothic and alternative culture. Many people use this opportunity to showcase their unique and elaborate outfits, making it a visually striking event.
Whitby itself is an atmospheric and picturesque coastal town, known for its connection to Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and its historic abbey ruins. The town's gothic architecture, narrow cobbled streets, and stunning views of the North Sea provide a fitting backdrop for the event.
The Whitby Goth Weekend attracts a diverse crowd, including goths, punks, steampunks, metalheads, and other alternative subcultures. It is a celebration of individuality, creativity, and a love for all things dark and alternative.

Sorry but as a Goth I never saw what I wore as a 'costume' but regular attire and I feel people who create the impression that's what Goths do at Whitby are ridiculing people on the scene.

The Goggle hats that you have seen in shops have nothing to do with the Goth Festival but instead 'Steampunks' to which they already have a festival in Whitby but have taken over this too. Whitby has a Comic con, Pirate festival and a Steampunk festival but despite this they have decided to take up all the hotel spaces in Whitby during the Uk's only Goth festival making an already vunerable group (Goths) have no where to go which is actually damaging the Goth festival with numbers shrinking every year. By the way that is not the festival, that takes place indoors and is a Goth music festival, something that the majority of them cosplayers have no idea about. Also you did well capturing those fancy dress scum sitting on the graves.... A few years ago the graveyard got taped off and a note put in the papers blaming actual Goths for disrespecting the graves and sitting on them and posing for photos...... If these clowns keep doing this then it is only going to end up with the churchyard quardened off once again or worse, the festival banned altogether

Yes, we walked past the leisure center on the way in where one of the main parts was held, but completely missed it. i feel a little annoyed with myself about that! Next time we will capture it better i hope :) looking forward to October already.

These are the costumers. Where are the actual Goths, no one ever shows the evening clubs or live bands which was the point of Whitby. The Steam Punks created the wrong perception about Whitby, its not a Comic Con.

It was the first time we went and didn't know what to expect. This time we will be staying in Whitby on Friday and Saturday so we can see more of the event.
Not sure we can get to see the bands (shame) as we will have our dog

@@MovingNorthEast Are you a Goth, as in someone in the scene who goes to Goth clubs/gigs in your own respective town or city that plays Goth music? Or someone who though Whitby would be fun to go to?

@@MovingNorthEast See, this is why it's not a 'Goth' event anymore. If 1000 people like yourself go and outnumber the actual Goths there for the bands/clubs etc it's no longer a 'Goth' event if you don't actually identify as a 'Goth'. I normally have nothing against people having fun and dressing up had it not been at the expense of the original Goth Weekend, it's just a shame they could not do the same in York, Bath or any other nice city and leave Whitby for the Goths like they had during the 1990's-2000's.
