Definitely not 'nostalgic', but I must admit as a loyal, longtime fan through thick and thin... this song is one of the most boring, pedestrian sounding things I've ever heard from the Damned. There are other songs on Evil Spirits that are really great, top-notch Damned classics, but this one just sounds wholly out of place to me. I know it's Pinch's song. He wrote the music and the lyrics, and no offense to him as a person, but I think maybe he should have saved this for a solo outing or another band. I also can't stand the vague political tone. Either be direct and up front with politics or don't do politics at all (in the music). The Damned have always smartly stayed away from politics, and the few songs that were/are political were usually done in a clever way where it wasn't preachy or self-righteous, but it was always clear exactly where they stood. Not the case on this one. All that said, I agree that they have at least been successful in avoiding the nostalgia/retro curse that has plagued so many old punk bands in recent years. I can find many similarities (on Evil Spirits) with previous eras, but it's not a blatant case of trying desperately to recapture old glories. More like an homage to an illustrious past, while still looking forward. It's just this song... ugh.
Brewzerr I respect your opinion, but I find this song gorgeous melodically and lyrically. I love the odd modulation in the chorus and Dave's voice has never sounded better. I also like the unorthodox way the song inserts a pre-chorus before the second chorus, but not the first. The breakdown and organ solo are both very wistful and elegiac to me. In fact, the whole thing is very pretty to me. The more important point here is this: While I get where you're coming from, don't fall into the trap of thinking that because sonething doesn't resonate with you it can't resonate with others. The Damned have a lot of different colors and flavors, and are shrewd enough to know that different songs are going to appeal to different people in different ways. They probably knew that many of their fans would connect with this song, even if others didn't. You can't please everyone. Count me among the people who love this song.
@@glennpagemusic Totally agree. The Damned have never been just one sound but actually I think this is a very Damned song which allows Dave Vanians vocals to shine through, also Monty Oxymorons keyboards get good airing. But your right the melodics are gorgeous. The band showing they are so much more than just another punk band.
honestly, is there any frontman as stylish and perfect in every sense?? nobody looks like that, nobody sings like that... and not just Dave, but all of them, amazing... Love you Damned, please never stop... never die..
Paul Gray's bass !! Loved Stu's work and Patricia Morrison's, But Gray has a very organic bass presence. Pinch puts a lotof heart too! Brings some nice variations. And The Captain's signature is on so many songs, it's a delight in itself. My favorite band of all time without a doubt!! And I'm 52. And listened to a LOT of music. Still do. The Damned always come back for some appreciation from time to time. And yes Evil Spirits is one my favorite!!
Chin up my dear, amazing how things can change when you least expect it to, I have been listening to tha Damned from day one and I cant tell you how many times they have come to the rescue when I was feeling down x
David Radford exactly a few years back even in my ward days they helped in so many ways also feel free to message me if ever need always good to have friends and support and helps that we all love the damned hehe
Beautiful haunting song , well done dear masters ,more than 40 years surviving with class and style , ..after this there is nothing.. oh yes .. i got a new rose!!'...
Not prominent enough, I think. Visconti kind of dialed him down in the mix. Listen to The Black Album or Strawberries and you'll hear Paul's bass really shine bright, but on Evil Spirits it's a bit more in the background. Still sounds great, but not as up front as it was in the '80-'83 recordings.
Saw Paul Gray from 3 meters of distance, i was at the edge of the stage when they came to Udine ( North Italy) in April 1980, and before the concert i've spoke to Rat Scabies, and got his autograph, ( i lost it ) , he was friendly with all the people surrounding him. During the concert, Rat played with his Gibson Les Paul some songs of the Sex Pistols, and Captain Sensible was on drums! Unforgettable concert!
An absolutely stellar album, I'm glad I managed to get a signed one yesterday. It was the highlight of my year and likely will remain to be the highlight of my year unless I can catch them live! Great job chaps!
This is by far my favourite song on the album, and it has a great video accompanying it! I met The Damned at a signing last Saturday which had been the highlight of my year so far.
went to the hollywood vampires concert in glasgow last week, these guys were one of the opening acts and at 14 years old i love these guys so much even tho before the concert i had never heard of them really, now there one of my fav bands and there so good live😍😴
Love the sleight of hand twist of fate theme of the song. The lads look great and sound even better! It's allways good to see the captain being jolly!😎
First heard it at the gig in Southend. Great song. Well made video. Been following The Damned for a long time now. Great to see them still going. Great bunch of gentlemen, who are loving what they do!
The Damned forever - bought New Rose when I was 10 on Skydog label - still getting 'goosebumps' and 2000% happier now that PG is well. Thank You The Damned - you bastards changed my fucking life.
And this tune was written by the drummer, Pinch (ex-English Dogs). Anything is possible. Brilliant song and vid. I like how each instrument has a small solo piece that doesn’t distract from the overall song.
Dear Damned. Thank you for not succumbing to the dark allure of becoming a nostalgia act. Although your back catalog is filled with a variety and quality that lesser bands could scarcely imagine, your new music on the post-reunion recordings are as great as or (forgive the blasphemy) better than the magical music you gifted the world with in the 70's and 80's. Judging from the sound of the new record, it seems that your production team also understand that one of rock and roll' s greatest bassist, Paul Gray, has returned to his musical home. The bass sound is better than any of the previous recordings that Paul has played on.
nikto45 Their new albums certainly are infrequent but prevent them from fully becoming a typical nostalgia act. Having said that, I've seen them do gigs consisting of 70s and 80s songs, and wished there were some of the newer songs in the set.
This is simply 'awesome' Thanks guys for keeping it fresh & always moving forward. Thanks for all the memories & for making all your fans happy through the decades - keep on keeping on 👍
GREAT piece of work by The DAMNED. Caught them Live in their prime (Late70's,early80's)...Super Band...and STILL kickin' A*s ! RB/nowretiredfromTheScene&wrestlingwithTheDevil /
One of my biggest regrets in life is finding out about this band 30 years after I should have- Only knew "Alone Again" Because of KROQ in the 80's- I LOVE them now. Seen them 2-3 times in the last two years. Going to see them again May 2019!!
GOOD SONG!!! GOOD BANDS ARE THOSE THAT REMAIN THROUGH TIME!! Also I knowing a lot of good new music !! like this or "The growlers" or "La rueda o el barco" Recommend me more, please!!!
A cool fast-forward & throwback sound for this new track & album that sounds reminiscent of mid-80's their Phantasmagoria & Anything era yet fits in or stands out like a "Nasty" Nun in the Vatican! DAMNED WELL DONE! ;-) \m/
Amazing song! Well written and a wonderful vocal delivery as always. I can’t stop listening to it. Though I’m baffled how that horrific sounding keyboard solo at the end made the final cut. Talk about giving the Mona Lisa a Dirty Sanchez.
Intro could be mistaken for a Killing Joke vid. Hardly punk but excellent all the same and very polished, including Dave's vocals! Another Damned classic! Mr Vanian, my all-time favourite crooner!
This is brilliant! I tend to be into mellow music, and never tried them, just assumed they were a bit too "hard/loud" for me, but man, glad I tried the "Evil Spirits" album on a friend's insistence... What a wonderful band!!
Kudos to The Damned for not turning into a tired old nostalgia act, still doing it their way.

This is The Damned at the top of their game.
This is my favorite thing on Evil Spirits and it was written by the drummer. What a great farewell Pinch! Definitely a Damned classic 🔥.

And there was me thinking that Mr Vanian was starting to resemble a sartorially elegant Elvis Costello!
Dunno bout that. Just watched him making a 🐖 s ass of What Do I Get at the Pete Shelley benefit gig
The way The Damned songs always cheer me up no matter whats's going on my life.
Wonderful! Dave's crooning has never sounded better. The album is phenomenal. Monty's keyboards add a lot to the album.

With the worst album of 2018👍

The Damned is, with no doubt, one of the bands of my life!
Great to see the chaps still banging out tunes 40+ years after New Rose...... Loving this!

Clever and refreshing. Great to see Paul back on bass. Love it!
Great song and video. I love how prominent Paul's Rickenbacker is in the mix.

La banda mas grande que me voló la cabezaaa, ojalá vuelvan pronto a Argentina.. aguante Damned!!!
Beautiful, haunting, thought provoking. Superb Track. Well done The Damned xxx
A perfect song to convince the doubters!
If I ever get hooked on old crooners like Bing Crosby, Perry Como or Val Doonican etc, I shall hold Mr Vanian wholly responsible.
Love the sleight of hand twist of fate theme of the song. The lads look great and sound even better! It's allways good to see the captain being jolly!😎
"lies become the truth" just about as apt for 2020 as it can be.
4 decades later, still rocking hard
There's a slickness and a maturity to this we haven't seen since Strawberries era Damned. Well done !
