general tips: Don't be afraid to run away the game doesn't care how long you take to take a turn Certain things count as actions (and take turns), don't forget to multi select when you can and the tutorials gives a reward the first time you do them if I'm not mistaken, so even if you're a veteran of this style of game, the tutorial is useful. The enemies are jank af, but that's part of the experience of this game
imagine my surprise coming from torneko. wanting to use an escape scroll but whoops it's night and out of torches. this game is HARD but I love it for that.
I've been really getting into this and just having fun withe the bonus dungeons. I've also just recently realised the importance of Synthesis Pots in vastly improving your swords/shields. I'm currently doing Monster Hotspot and practically begging for a Gold Shield and Dull Gold Edge just so the things can't get downgraded.
It's probably the most pick up and play game ever, but it's also still unforgiving, because if you forget to charge your switch/vita or whatever you're playing this on and you didn't save before it dies: RIP your inventory.
Shit you think that's bad, this game was one of the major reasons I picked up a Vita earlier this year. Granted there is enough other stuff to keep it around but it still kind of makes it feel a little less useful.
If you guys are like me, in the aspect of liking Rougelikes/lites with RPG elements, please please PLEASE check out Shiren the Wanderer on Switch! Such a lil gem 💎 🙏🏽👀🔥 (last day for the sale! Join the rescue squad)
Ive been having so much fun playing this game but Ive been so scared because Ive heard a ton of reports of the game freezing and people losing HOURS of progress. Chunsoft REALLY needs to address this issue somehow.
Oh hell yeah! I had this game on PS Vita and unfortunately I lost it when I moved. It's pretty fun: good soundtrack, nice graphics, just overall a fun little roguelike.
Arnt games like this usually called mystery dungeons? Like i know pokemon made that name popular but theres been quite a number of games in that game style
Chunsoft started the Mystery Dungeon series with a Dragon Quest spin-off called Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon. It's one of the first console roguelikes. Shiren the Wanderer is their original IP. Non-Spike Chunsoft games in the Mystery Dungeon style include (among others) Baroque and the recently released Void Terrarium.
It's the exact same style. There a number of mystery dungeon games from other franchises but Shiren is essentially the original game seties with this style (though technically the first was for this one side character from I think Dragon Quest where you are a merchant and explore a dungeon)
Pixel dungeon borrowed heavily from rogue, which is what this game borrows from too. This is a true "rogue-like" because it retains the rogue part of roguelike

This review is also a great tutorial. Thanks a lot!
It should be noted here that Chunsoft are the Japanese Gods of console Rogue games. They've never produced a 'dud' in this series of game.... EVER!
I had recently found out about another super hidden gem from them recently, nightmare of druaga. solid game.
even on the original copy it just knows you rage quit or turned the ps2 off. the developers are next level.
There is still ichi nippon or whoever that was developing disgaea
@@professorpenne9962 Nightmare of druaga was super slow tho. Its okay.
@@professorpenne9962 yeah, getting busted on rage quitting is also a chunsoft-thing. I think all of their games had that feature. hahah
This game has been the reason I still have a Vita, though now that I can get it on Switch, it might be time to retire the Vita.
This was the last game I played on the vita lol
@@TranceCore3 looks like a really portable game

If your a gamer why would ya retire a Vita?
Still a great console to have and own.
Reminds me a lot of Azure Dreams, love it
Exactly. Azure dreams, ff8, ff9, and brave fencer musashi are my all time favorite ps1 rpgs
sold, i needed a reason to charge my switch
yo man, I heard that when you don't at least keep your switch charged up, the battery will degrade faster.
@@Blockdigit oh im fucked
Loved Azure Dream on psx so im sold on this game
Great video! Game starts kicking my ass.
Aww Shiren is no longer published by Atlus? I QA - tested the Nintendo DS version when I was at Atlus 15-16 years ago.
The DS release was excellent! Thank you for your part in bringing it to the West :D
@@acedio You're very welcome, sir!
Good stuff

It looks like they fixed it!
edit: they fixed the pc version and switch patch is coming.
the battle style remind me of the old pokemon mysterious dungeon game series I played years ago...
The name is Dungeon mystery.
is a game genre and the first was Torneko no Daibōken: Fushigi no Dungeon
Same developers. :)

Great review
Where is ht elost and found?? I lost my aweosm e weapon. The warehouse guy offers to TAG, but where do I go get my weapon back?
I played torneko games and this puts your through the ringer.
I love it.
Awesome game, remind me a lot of Fatal Labyrinth from Mega Drive.
More of less similar to Azure Dreams.
I have to ask, is this game exactly like Fatal Labyrinth? It's a guilty pleasure of mine.
@@wormwood5073 It's like a modern version of Fatal Labyrinth :)
This game is awesome I got on psvita years ago
this gamestyle remind me of Lufia in GBC the random generated dungeon that goes 200 flr
How does the rescue system work exactley? I only get the option to send revive grass

Darksouls but 2D style
pretty good analogy, this game can be soul crushing at times
🤔🤔🤔👌👌👌👍👍🔥🤣🤣
@Nicky Bobby had it happen to my max red shield too.absolutely gutted.
Looks like NetHack meets a JRPG...
A recipe for brilliance
It kinda looks like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon

No, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon looks like Shiren. :)
They're both made by the same people. This one was their next game after Explorers of Sky
Nice
Pixel Dungeoun 2.0? Sounds much alike :)
Pixel dungeon borrowed heavily from rogue, which is what this game borrows from too. This is a true "rogue-like" because it retains the rogue part of roguelike
This is actually a port, it was made ten years ago, before Pixel Dungeon was released
I like this sort of thing but hunger stuff annoys me. Why do you have to munch something after just literately taking a few steps...
I do not think it is that bad in this game.
the hunger mechanic might as well not be there.. it's yet to really effect my run or put me under pressure
Ya a new Pokémon mystery dungeon. 😂😂
torneko came out way before that though 😄
Gameplay its the same of omega labyirit without hentai element
First.
