I think this approach is developing so well in America right now. More and more people are falling into that mentality of one car, drive it to the track, drive it to the store, etc. This really goes back to the true grassroots...the days when you bought a showroom Corvette and ran it at the SCCA Runoffs with a set of slicks and could win. It's that accessible form of motorsport and collection of like-minded enthusiasts. I believe the growth of road racing in America is finally arriving and growing in a healthy manner. Time Attack, rally's, Weathertech Championship, etc. This can be a great era if people get involved.
A fine man, an admirable car and a perfectly executed video production. TH-cam at its very finest. Mr. Price speaks with a humble integrity that can be a reminder for us all. The 4-cyl dohc Alfas were in a class of their own. My Giulia Super was the best car I ever owned. Keep on racing Mr. Price.
The sound of the giulietta engine is speechless and the car itself brings the past classic romantic speedy automobile artwork through engineering... Beauty on wheels
This film is, without a doubt, one of my all time favourites. Great work, beautiful photography, awesome sound, great interview. Just incredible, congratulations to you all.
I used to race at LimeRock in a 57 Giulietta Spyder the summers of 72 and 73. What a great track and the people were great. I was 18 years old at the time.
In 1968 I bought a 1959 Alfa spyder from a man who had raced it at Lime Rock. It still had the number "73" on the doors and the "SCCA GP" designation on the sides. Loved that car but was forced to sell it a couple years later. Always wondered what happened to it after that. Maybe this is it. Would be happy if it was to see it still out on the track and being enjoyed. These cars are double overhead cam aluminum heads and the transmission housing and differential housing are also aluminum. Quite advanced for their time.
When I was about 15 or 16, my friends father owned this car and back then, I didn't know what Alfa was. She was beautiful to look at but I was told that she only had about 80 hp or so. I was all about high hp figure and speed so it didn't intrigued at all. Now I'm 41 and thinking back after seeing this episode, what a privilege to had sat in the car and was taken for a short drive around the neighborhood.
bmdub27 hi thanks for that, during the video it was on a sign on the race track obviously van Rees is not too observant. Just a quote on the video itself and he and 2 others ain't got a clue!
I have driven 1960 muscle cars, Berlinetta Boxer Ferrari's, Testarosa Ferraris but without a doubt the time I spend racing a TR3 was the most fun. It was more about you the driver instead of extreme horse power. You drove the car instead of accelerate, brake, turn, hold on, repeat. When you watch these races you get a little of how great it is but you really should try and get out there to really know. That is real racing!!
This is, as always, an excellent video! I'd also like to give kudos to both Petrolicious and Autodromo for their extremely tasteful product placement. Not compromising the closeup shots really added to the curiosity of the AUTODROMO stickers on Bradley's sweet carbon fiber lid. It's not often that I actually want to thank someone's sponsor, but I get a lot of enjoyment out of these videos.
Hey Bradley.....Your insurance agent just called and says he wants to have a word with you after he saw you in this video....! LOL. Wonderful video. I am envious.....
We used to use this trick in the old days, (when most cars didn't have steering locks, can lead quickly to death otherwise), if you had a sports exhaust, (loud ),you would pick up some speed going down hill through town, then turn off the ignition so the car is turning over in gear but not firing ,when you noticed your preferred victim you would turn on the ignition and the unburned fuel would explode through the exhaust in a very loud explosion, much like a gunshot, older people may well have had heart attacks but we were young and thought that sort of thing was funny there may be a clue there for Mr Autodromo? I was always worried this was not a good thing for the car but like I say ,we were young.
seeing these little alfa romeos and other cars like this, i can see where the inspiration for the Miata comes from..a simple little roadster with a small engine and nimble handling..
+Russell Bluewolf - true that. Also undersized engines, almost always front engine / rear drive. The 0-60 times of cars in 1959 were often in the 14+ second range. This car was considerably faster stock (10.8 sec? for Veloce 1300cc?)
It's good and all with big displacement but we should not forget that you can have this much fun in a small, light car and with just a small 4 cyl 1,3 L engine. It goes fast and sounds great. I guess MX-5 is the modern version of these cars. Now I appreciate MX-5 even more.
Why do all the cars that are featured on Petrolicious look awesome? I would take this alfa over the stock one anytime. Another great car, another great story, and another great video from Petrolicious.
Mr Price, if you don't mind me asking, what brand/color of eyeglass frames are you wearing 1:05? Oh yeah, your race car is very cool as well. :) Thanks, RYR
+RollYourRock The sunglasses are my very own design -- Autodromo Stelvio sunglasses, available in our web store www.autodromo.com. Can't blame a guy for a little product placement ;-) But truth be told I designed them narrow specifically to be worn beneath a helmet
Bravo ..a true petrolhead wonderful cars.Never tired of mine despite half a century of ownership. Though I must admit its in better condition than I am..;))
Awesome car, sounds great. Also nice editing/filming. One thing, does this car not look better without that thing behind the drivers seat? I don't know what it is called. But I think without it, it would look so much better (I know, that thing is probably original so you have to keep it that way).
+Lt Col Speirs It's a roll hoop for safety. We designed it to be removeable and I agree, the car looks a hell of a lot nicer when the hoop is unbolted. But for racing, it would be foolish to run without it (and illegal in most clubs).
Every time Petrolicious.. every time you make me regret buying my newer Acura. Or it could be that the transmission just exploded. BUT it gives me some sort of hope that I can one day buy a classic car that I truly will love.
I had a 57 [750 series]...on the road....total rebuilt....racing, the better ones were the later 101 series....uh...59-60...don't remember...but the engines in the 101 were stronger...mechanically..but fun cars....great handling...a few years later I got a 67 GTV...now THAT was a world beater.
+13THPR0PH37 Miata is the answer. I love these cars, but parts availability, and reliability would be forefront in the decision making process for me. And I know what you're saying. I also need a little racer beater!
My next door neighbor did this with a c1957 Porsche Speedster. It was C1967. I was 17 he was 30 something. a few times I went to Laguna Seca and "pitted:" for him. We drove over Highway 17, a real bob sled run over the Santa Cruz mountains. Today it has K wall and it's maybe 5 feet wider. hwy 17 was more dangerous than racing.
+gupreme - Like all things, you need to be around them a while and they grow on you fast. The history and simplicity, plus the styling are the draws for me. Plus it can be a straight forward way to make sure your ride is very unique. You could by a new Corvette, and you'll have to customize the crap out of it before it has any uniqueness factor, because your neighbor can go buy one the next weekend. Then once you own them, you realize they are very engaging, keeping them running, and even driving them. They are a constant source of conversation. And unlike new cars, they are usually appreciating, instead of depreciating. So it doesn't feel like bad money spent when you fix or upgrade things.
See Petrolicious video on my feedback......DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT NOT WATCHING NOW!! Guys i don't know if you read comments (cause you feel like you are UP THERE) but i wanna thank you for creating such an art of a channel!
Another great Petrolicious film and a car prepared in absolutely the correct spirit; excellent! Bradley, the backfire coming off throttle is most likely a cracked or leaking exhaust manifold - check it out and let us know the result ;-)
Incredible! Absolutely stunning! Does Petrolicious predominantly focus on European and American cars? What about some love for Japanese, British and others? I know you guys have before... but what's the deal?

"At the end of the day you are the component in the car that needs the most work" truer words have not been spoken yet
Speechless. Beautiful to watch, must be even more enchanting to drive!

Try 1958 Coupe Des Alpes a Shell film on the tube.
I used to race at LimeRock in a 57 Giulietta Spyder the summers of 72 and 73. What a great track and the people were great. I was 18 years old at the time.

Seeing all those Giuliettas racing in the US after all these years... It fills me with such joy. A timeless racer indeed.

Nice. I've watched you guys tear it up many times at LRP. Always a thrill. No one drives them like they are trailer queens.
Wow, I wish I could be as happy, as this guy is.
Brilliant as always.
Auto racing, bull fighting and mountain climbing are the only real sports....all others are games! Brilliant, got to love this channel.
Bull fighting? Serious ?..
+van Rees It's a quote from Ernest Hemingway.
bmdub27 hi thanks for that, during the video it was on a sign on the race track obviously van Rees is not too observant. Just a quote on the video itself and he and 2 others ain't got a clue!
+Ganooster Moppy oh didnt notice that
In otherwords, if you can't potentially die while doing it then it's def not a sport.
I LOVE ALFA!! there is so very much heritage and history, they are just a different breed. Amazing in their simplicity
Bradley Price is so cool!
Always like the video before watching it!
Autodromo, such a sweet Alfa! And I like your choices and philosophy. Thanks for a really nice film, Petrolicious. Cheers to all!
Camera work on this channel is amazing, you know these cinematographers are dam passionate about cars.
I have driven 1960 muscle cars, Berlinetta Boxer Ferrari's, Testarosa Ferraris but without a doubt the time I spend racing a TR3 was the most fun. Petrolicious, keep these great vids coming. Bradley, keep the awesome watches coming.
the best youtube channel, keep up the good work you inspire me to work hard to be able to have one of these awesome vehicles
Whoever does the colouring always does such a great job :)
+icebreaker Thanks!
What an elegant little motor car - nice!
Lime Rock!! My backyard I've spent the last few labor days at the vintage festival great times.

+Calvin Graham Thanks a lot Calvin!
I love your car, and your attitude, Bradley. Happy racing!
I think there are very few youtube channels, which make such beautiful videos and do them with such a passion.
Keep up the great work! :)
nice that you still race it. most old racecars are in a collection and are not raced any more, it's a shame.
This old giulietta is a timeless classic
Just fantastic video-jewellery and lovely shapes of cars in the fifties. Cheers!
this guy is chill
Totally awesome, rather jealous, but you have a very sweet machine!!!

Another great video / great story! love the mirror shot at 5:22!
i really hope he never "fixes" that backfire haha

Beautiful car and video and I always like seeing my local track get some spot light.
I saw this car at the Lime Rock Historics!
The lil black Elan was out there doing work!!!
fantastic alfa romeo giulietta spider
BEAUTIFUL
Nice new intro to a fantastic video. Loved it, loved the car.
Lime Rock is a great venue.
Fantastic, Bradley!
+Dave Scholz big ups, my friend!
had to rewatch the 240z vid after seeing your comment :)

+RollYourRock Oh sorry I misunderstood! They are from Cutler and Gross London.
+Autodromo Thanks Bradley, could you possibly share the style name/color/size? Sorry for the trouble :)
+RollYourRock honestly I don't know. You'd have to go to their shop.
+Autodromo - Well, I actually did that and found several with that shape. Would there a name/specs printed on inside of the temple arm?
It's a beautiful thing!
Looks like real fun!
Sick!
Well done bradley

Autodromo Thanks, I never knew this.
nice job on the video and the storyline

Or it could be that the transmission just exploded. BUT it gives me some sort of hope that I can one day buy a classic car that I truly will love.
Great video. And anyone who hasn't been to the vintage races at Lime Rock really needs to go.
Love this one !! Matt Larson is petrolicious best director :')

I dream of the Group B watch at night... Would fit great in my gt-four ...
Did the camera man in the trunk eventually get out?
+2264ish he's ballast over the rear wheels for handling the corners. they let him out for the ride home.
What a great machine. just the right modifications. although red would fit slightly better this shapes..
At 7:12, great advice and vid.
The background music sounds like that Pink Floyd song On The Run.
Awesome..cool..i luv it..
Incredible! Absolutely stunning!
Does Petrolicious predominantly focus on European and American cars? What about some love for Japanese, British and others? I know you guys have before... but what's the deal?

alfa Romeo is Best Car and Good Car
Sweet! The backfire on over run can mean that you are running a little rich, or that the exhaust valves are leaking a little. If the plugs look fine, leave it alone!....and keep having fun. Question: how did you get the car registered as "street legal" without a windshield and wipers? I had a great, full race, TR4 years ago and didn't even try to get it registered in CT with just a plexi wind screen and no wipers. Did we meet at one of Rich Taylor's Vintage Rallies a year or so ago?
Great video as always! The music was especially well done in this one. As a side note, I really like the look of those shoes he was putting on at 6:35. Anyone know what kind they are?
It backfires in those long sweeping corners due to centrifugal force... This force causes a temporary fuel starvation at such severe corner G's. You either need to pump more fuel faster...OR...adjust your carb float level to be higher...or both perhaps. When the G force subsides and the engine is again able to pull fuel after momentarily being starved for fuel...BANG! OR Conversely and possibly more likely, it can be a momentary loss of ignition in the corner as well...same result. A loose wire being moved till it grounds out...such as the coil wire...or a harness wire feeding ignition. Up to you to feel it out...I can only list the possibles...but there are clues If the engine loses power in a very fast on off switch manner...its ignition....if its slower to manifest...its fuel. If I were onsite I could quickly tell you which...but it sounds like it occurs quickly...so my attention would go toward wires and wire harnesses that can move....difficult to nail at a computer screen. Hope this helps
Why was his Alfa backfiring so loudly?
+The Moto Channel Maybe running a little rich?..or lean...ignition timing..it won't harm the car..the proper technical term is afterfire...backfire happens in the induction system..not good.
could be fuel starvation due to all the gas in the float bowl going to one side during a corner?
+copperlocks1 Rich mixture is what I've always understood. Incompletely burned a/f mixture igniting in the hot exhaust pipe on the overrun (when the throttle is closed). You can see it in many videos of sports car racing.
because alpha
because it was not designed to backfire...
Mr. Price, what shoes were you wearing in the video? Looks like a Chapal or Sparco vintage boots to me. You should make your own line of driving shoes...
+Andee Mal They are the Sparco vintage boots. Chapal does not make anything fireproof to my knowledge. We are working on some shoes, by the way! ;-)
You guys need to do a Mazda cosmo.
+invinciblejets - Good luck with that. How many are being driven? Don't think I've ever seen one at vintage races either (except when Mazda brings a show car for display only to Laguna Seca) May have to go overseas again to see one in motion (or check out Jay Leno's)
Don't be so sure there is a few cruising in the US not many tho just like a lot of these cars they show ... But hey I can only hope lol
did everyone notice the Lotus Elan win? maybe we'll see a video on a lotus from petrolicious soon? after like another 15 Porsche videos maybe.
