MJ and Macauley Culkin were extremely close friends. To this day, Macauley has stood his ground about the negative press on MJ. Constantly defended MJ in interviews concerning allegations. Macauley is also the Godfather of MJ’s children.

The black panther symbolizes the Black Panther Movement and going against the system. It also Micheal showing he never forgot about his blackness, which people accuse him of doing, because of skin change and nose jobs. The dancing at the end got criticized for being too violent and sexual suggestive which was weird.

You know that when the Billie Jean video got released, MTV first would'nt released it because they would not broadcast a black video. Michael's manager threanted thenlm that he would pull every single video he has from MTV and that they would have nothing, so MTV had to do it and it was I believe the most replayed video on the program because there was so much demand. And then the Thriller video came and it was actually played twice every hour for a couple of months after its released because of the heavy demand - that means for half the time you would turn up mtv you would see thriller. Before thriller the Rolling stone magazine refused to do a cover on him because he is black. He then said he wanted to create something so big, something so great everyone would have to see it. And then the magazine would beg michael to do an interview. "and then maybe I will, maybe I won't" he said. That and the fact that Off the wall was snubbed at the grammys with only one grammy (he expected to recieve much more awards because he poured his entire heart into it) gave him the drive to do Thriller. After mj broke the racial barrier in mtv every black artist had the platform to air their video - thanks to michael. That moment when he moonwalked for the first time in boradcast tv in motown 25 was the biggest and most revolutionary racial thing for black people in america since martin luther king's i have a dream speech. Before off the wall his father allowed him to do the album as long as it doesn't hurt the band, but said to quincy jones (the producer) that there is no way he could make michael bigger that he is. And he did. And then working on thriller he said again that there is no chance turning him bigger - he was already the biggest entertainer in the world and had the most selling black album at the time - off the wall. Michael said I will show them. He wrote a note and said "20 millions copies sold" and put it on the mirror in his room so he would wake up to this every morning. His brothers laughed about his and called him crazy. He worked on the thriller album day and night - Sometimes 18 hours a day. And it was finished mj cried and left the studio saying it sucks, and that they doesn't have time to do anything else before the date they have to release it, and that "there is no way I'm releasing THAT". They remixed every track ALOT of times - Billie Jean was remixed about a 100 times. Until it was finally perfection. Mj showed the album to his brothers and they said it will flop. Not only that it didn't flop, it has become to be the most selling album of all time. Between bad and the releasing of black or white and then dangerous, he wrote a letter in which he wrote that they always said Elvis is the king, the beatles are the best and that bruce Springteen is 'the boss'. He wrote it's time for a new king - I will show them. He wanted to break all barriers and to have recial harmony - with this album he wanted to heal the world and had one message - that it doesn't matter if you're black or white

Hope you can read it all man, it really means alot. This was the first single of Dangerous, released before the album came out - the first MJ song of the 90's and the first light skinned MJ song. He had finished the bad tour in the end of the 80's and then 'disappeared', kind of. And then suddenly his skin turned white, without no explanation. Remember it was before the internet, before Everybody knew about the existence of his desease. So then 4 years after bad came out, suddenly MJ announces that a new album is coming out, and that is an excitement of it self. And then he said that the main single of the album is called black or white. His skin just turned white, and he releases a new (and big) song after 3 years of waiting, and he is gonna say whether he is black or white!! Just imagine the excitement. There was a 30 days countdown until it finally got released and it was HUGE. It wss possibly the most viral thing in the 90s,the most viral thing before social media. It was like what Billie jean was to Thriller, what the bad video was to bad, and it spent the most amount of weeks at the top of the billboard hot 100 of any MJ song (alongside Billie Jean and Say Say Say) - 6 weeks! More than a month and a half it was the most listened to song in the the world. You simply had to be there to really experience the effect of it, it was so new and technological. The director of the video called Michael crazy for all of the things he wanted in his video (the same director that did Thriller, btw). It almost compelety took away his controversy of his skin turning white, afyer building it up almost as a song that is gonna say if he is black or white. It debuted the highest at the charter of the billboard hot 100 EVER, breaking the beatles record, and when it reached number one it made michael the first (or maybe the only one, to have a number one charter in the 60s,70s,80s, and now 90s as well. After that he released the album, and Remember the time, which was a huge hit as well (gotta watch the video, man!) black or white and Remember the time were what don't stop till you get enough and rock with you were to off the wall, what bad and the way you make me feel were to bad, only bigger and greater. Anyway great reaction man!

Can tell you were around for it as well! Said something similar in my comment. It was like MJ was everywhere that year! The release of Dangerous and in particular this video were HUGE!! One thing I will say though is that his complexion hadn't changed as drastically a it had between Thriller and BAD. By 87 he was already white in complexion but had pigment. When this came out he actually hadn't changed that significantly yet except for what looked like a further nose job and the hair.. It was the following year he began to look noticeably paler and by 93 he looked really different. If you check the making of this video on TH-cam he looks very much the same as he did in the late 80s, especially filming the panther sequence

“Black or White” ~ The #1 Smash merges classic rock with soulful crooning in a call for racial unity. “I took my baby on a Saturday bang,” MJ sings “Boy is that girl with you / Yes we’re one and the same.” The blockbuster single topped the charts in over 20 countries (making him the first artist to have #1 hits in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s). The revolutionary short film marked the return of “Thriller” director John Landis, actors Macaulay Culkin and George Wendt appear onscreen together, and roughly 500 million viewers from 27 countries tuned in for the premiere. While many enjoyed the gorgeous imagery and innovative special effects, some complained about the controversial “Panther Dance” scene. Jackson intended to channel the panther’s animalistic nature through dance moves, but due to public backlash, he reluctantly cut the entire section out. The violence and vandalism are easier to understand in the uncensored cut with Jackson smashing windows that depicted racial graffiti slurs. His public response to say controversy was quote said by MJ "It upsets me to think that 'Black or White' could influence any child or adult to destructive behavior, either sexual or violent." (Michael Jackson is the greatest dancer in the history of mankind forever, way too much talent in a single human being. I'm always in awe Long Live The King Of Music Forever!🙌🏽👑🖤🤍🌟)

    • @elsaanderson1176

Agree, but actually the version where the racist graffiti is written out, was the second version made for people - especially the white audience - to understand why MJ was trashing stuff and what the anger was all about. So the first version was this one and it got like super-banned and the second one was the explicit graffiti one, which also got banned by conservative, white US in the early culture war of the 90s. MTV played it after midnight only.
      So what did MJ do?
Showed it on every consert in every world tour after that, plus attacked the scene at the start of every single Dangerous WT consert, to the roar of a black panther, dressed in an army-styled jacket. Oh, and the black panther of course was a ref to the Black Panther movement, Malcolm X, etc.

If so, weird reason since kids didn't mind it, the frustration and sexuality and power moves etc, were really a bit above our heads. One just felt the expressions and watched all the cool dancemoves and that was that. Seeing someone smash stuff up, really wasn't new in a movie.
It was just conservative parents that got all jiddery about it.

@elsaanderson1176 I hear you.. I was 4 when I first saw this and saw it close to what must be a million times by age 10. There was never anything sexually suggestive about it to me, I just loved the precision and expression in the dance! I can see both sides though.. it's still close ups of a 33 year old man excessively fondling his crotch.. Young people are extremely impressionable on a subconscious level and would likely imitate what they see (I know I was re-enacting the entire sequence with my fedora in the back garden as a kid, crotch grabs incl). Not really appropriate for those of a certain age.

    • @elsaanderson1176
      @elsaanderson1176 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@moscokidd3813 Idk, kids play with their junk all the time - atleast for boys, hopefully that'll change - this is usually seen as an endearing part of getting to know one's body, up until a certain age. By then, it's become socially embarresing amongst one's friends; then those who dare do a crotch grab usually starts giggling together with their friends. Not really a big deal.
If one as a parent seriously gets scared one's kids will start masturbating in public from watching this film, they could just sit down and talk about it. How hard can it be?

Hi, Seph :D! Great reaction as always!
Just to give some more context on the dancing sequence towards the end, this version of the video is slightly edited. In the original one, all those things he smashed (like the car and the window) had racist messages/symbols or other sort of hate speech, but since this would probably take the video down from youtube, they edited them out. The concept of this section was to create a dancing sequence that could be described as 'animalistic' or something like this (since he transformed from panther to human), so they went for raw emotion. Also, the panther is another symbolism against racism.
About the face morphing thing, this was pretty much the start of it! So yes, this video was revolutionary in more ways than one!

FINALLY!!... Right OK, a bit of back story from a UK perspective. This strangely enough is one of my first clear memories. Leading up to the release of this short film there was an absolutely immense amount of hype surrounding it as it was MJ's comeback after 2 years out of the spotlight following the close of the BAD tour. Till this day I have NEVER seen anything like it.. There were two trailers running during the weeks leading up to the airing on Top of The Pops on 14th November 1991. It was broadcast to an audience of 500 million simultaneously which Im pretty sure was unheard of at the time. The first and most elaborate trailer was The "Dangerous Teaser" which was a short clip directed by David Lynch who also did the series Twin Peaks. If you get a moment in your own time I'd highly recommend watching it as it gives a feel for the level of promotion and the high expectations for the release of Dangerous. The second was a short clip of Michael walking through the fire in the video which scared the mess out of 4 year old me, so much so I had to run to my babysitters teenage daughter for a hug every time! 😂 Great intro to MJ

Side note: You're possibly gonna get alot of people telling you this is the edited version of the short film because all the graffiti from the panther sequence is missing... Its not. Its the original, I remember when it aired. The version with graffiti on the glass and windows was created in 1993 via CGI to explain what seemed like senseless violence following the media backlash when the entire short film aired.

Michael then had to come out and apologize and say he didn't mean to provoke any kind of violence or sexual behavior in any one and he just did the way he felt, he wanted to show how he feels about racism and that he will fight back against it. And then he had to cut out the entire segment because of it. My mother was an 80's kid and she said that she watched it alot in the 90s because it was everywhere, and a couple of days ago when I showed her this, she said she never even knew about that part because they bullied michael into deleting it. Eventually Michael got tired of the poppy music and wanting to venture out and do more controversial elevating things but he was being held down by the world/industry. Michael learn from the greatest of black music entertainment and ventured out worldwide to learn other peoples cultures. We can do more then be designated to one genre and not evolve our environment, that’s why he challenged himself to a fault.

Michael and Macaulay were very close friends, they were very similar in a lot of ways, Macaulay started acting at the age of 5, same as Michael, they both grew up poor and had a large family, were child stars, the breadwinner of the family, and both had abusive fathers, Macaulay's father beat him and overworked him and exploited him for his money and he opened up about it later, so much so that now Macaulay has a child, and to this day he doesn't let his child meet his father, and I don't blame him, so I think Michael saw himself in him, he was the only one who knew exactly what Macaulay was going through and he wanted to help and protect him in a way, so they spent a lot of time at Neverland and had fun, Michael wanted him to escape from all of that and actually BE A KID, he knew how important it was, there are moments of them having water ballooon fights with other kids, it's so adorable ❤ Macaulay always said he was thankful for having Michael in his life and that he was peerless and literally no one else had this much idea of what he was going through, he ALWAYS defended Michael, saying that yes he slept in his bedroom (which was two stories) and NOTHING ever happened, he even testified for him in 2005 when everyone was telling him if he got involved it would damage his career, he was a true friend and defends him to this day ❤❤❤ and he is also godfather of Michael's children

The laat 5 minutes MJ said he just wanted to let out his anger about racism and prejudice in the world, unfortunately at the time it caused a lot of controversy, the media said it was "violent" and "too sexually charged", so Michael cut the last 5 minutee of the video he said the dance was supposed to be a "dance-style interpretation of the animalistic instincts of a panther", and apologized for the scene where he breaks the car etc, he said something like "it saddens me deeply to think that it could influence any child or adult to engage in destructive behavior. The face morphing tech was basically developed by the team behind this music film and it took forever to create back then. Pioneers (meant in a good, non-colonial way).

    • @moscokidd3813

No it wasn't.. The first use of the morphing was in Terminator 2 that same year and possibly 2001 A Space Odessy I believe (not sure if that's the film)... But first use in a musical short

    • @elsaanderson1176
      @elsaanderson1176 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@moscokidd3813 I wasn't talking about morphing as a whole but face morphing especially. Morphing effects in motion pictures can arguably be traced back to the early 20th century and the computorized tech named 'morphing' was first used in commercials, then in the Terminator movies (or...atleast in the second one) and that is also used for turning MJ in/out of being a panther or gold and sand in RTT.
Face morphing is using alot of the same tech of course but tools were also especially created for doing this first specific face-morphing scene, which was so elaborate that not only one face changes into another but this is made with multiple faces in a row and they're all moving. (They tried to make them all move similarly but as we know, they don't - each one has their own style.)
This was later developed into much quicker and easier used special face-morphing software, which in turn became part of like every special effects-student's curriculum for at least the following decade...or, who knows, they might still be doing it?
However, alot of the original artistery and high-quality was taken out of it.
One can read all about the journey here: www.cartoonbrew.com/vfx/oral-history-morphing-michael-jacksons-black-white-144015.html

Macauley is MJs daughter Paris Jackson's godfather. MJ and Mac became best friends. In the video is also Wade Robson who had the darker hair dancing by the door stump at the brownstone scene with him and a few kids. I think the girl is his niece Brandi. I cannot remember how true that is . She was in a couple of things with him. She also dated Wade. He is the one that is now saying MJ abused him. Lies!! MJ really helped him with the career that he did have. You should see some of the clips of them when they were goofing off on the set. MJ and Mac planned a food pie/whip cream fight with the director John Landis as their first victim. BTW John Landis also directed Thriller. The morphing thing got a lot of attention on this video because it was the first time being introduced to the world. At the end during the dance scene MJ got a lot of controversy because of the dance steps but also there were hate writings on the things he was smashing. This is an edited video from the original one that got played on Prime time TV on all the channels simultaneously. MJs videos back then were an event that everybody was excited to watch what he was doing next.

17:14 I am totally enjoying watching this with you. I love your energy you are giving to “be nice”. The visuals are intense. I have not seen this one yet. I think Michael is releasing his frustrations with the way the world had been treating him. His fans never left him. had been treating him. No empathy when he only showed the world his love. His entire life was on the stage and being Michael Jackson. He gave his intense way he could see the visuals and of course his love for music. His voice is priceless.

I knew you would love this one!! It actually wasn't for no reason, Michael said he wanted to express and let out his frustration and anger about prejudice, racism, bigotry. Not only for what he had been experiencing himself, but the whole world. The last 5 minutes of the video caused a lot of controversy and it was considered quite violent and "sexually suggestive". The heavy controversy once again created by the media made Michael go public and apologize for the video, saying that the suggestive behavior had been a dance-style interpretation of the animalistic instincts of a panther. Michael decided to cut the final 5 minutes of the video for TV channels. This is what he said in his official statement:
"It saddens me deeply to think that "Black or White" could influence any child or adult to engage in destructive behavior. I have always tried to be a good example and therefore made these changes to avoid any possibility of inadvertently affecting the behavior of any individual."
Even so, the uncut version was still shown on American MTV between 01:00 and 04:00 hours. But Michael ordered that the exhibition be suspended.

People should unite for common things; the world would be better off if people worked together instead of being selfish and hateful...imagine what the human race could do or accomplish if we worked together and not waste energy on useless prejudice and topics.

it was Michael's intention to interpret the violent and aggressive nature of the Panther into a dance. and he did that, roars, growls and all. and the shattering glass was covered in racist words and symbols. he, as a Black man, was striking back at racism and racist ideology. and notice the wind at the beginning of the dance. he stood firm as hurricane winds blew countless tabloid newspapers past him. he stood against the wind unmoved. he was stronger than it. perhaps that is the underlining reason it was soo controversial at the time. . .
