    All the tracks in this game are adaptive, meaning they change along with the game. in Resurrections, the first 2 thirds of the track are ambient while you explore this creepy but beautiful ancient ruin, then meet a new character (a version of the main character who is essentially everything she hates about herself) and try to follow her. The track builds and deescalates as you go, with new areas adding or changing the layers of music used. After you catch up to her, she goes off on the main character, telling her she can't climb the mountain, she's a failure, she should just give up like she always does. Then the chase sequence starts with the much more intense 3rd section of the piece. The really really cool part of this section is that every new room you make it through adds another layer to the arrangement (a new layer of percussion, a new melody, multiple past motifs layered together, etc.) until the end.

      Nailed it! I've followed him on Twitch, hoping to catch him some time, as this is the kind of stuff I'd love to see him reflect on during stream. This track builds so much, and the dynamic / adaptive aspect is on another level, puts the Yoshi hooves percussion in SMW to shame!

    Celeste is one of those games (along with Hollow Knight and Ori which he did recently) that is just an absolute masterpiece, a work of art from every part of it--the gameplay, the OST, and how these both serve to portray the themes/message of the game, it really is mind blowing how good it is.

    The juxtaposition of “Madeline and Theo” into “Star Jump” is my favorite moment on the Celeste soundtrack. There are these contrasting themes in the game of accompaniment and self-discovery. “Madeline and Theo” is about opening up about one’s trauma and anxiety to a new friend, and finding comfort in each others’ shared hardships and mutual support of each other. But then it goes right into “Starjump” where Madeline goes off to fight her demons on her own, empowered by her conversation with Theo. But ultimately, she fails. Her anxiety wins in a shocking and horrific fashion. And she falls. The game (and soundtrack) goes from the most wholesome moment to the most intense and gut wrenching. It makes me anxious every time I listen to it. No other soundtrack has ever had such power over me, but listening to these two tracks back to back and recalling my experience with the game and relating it to my own life- I cannot contain my tears. It’s beautiful. But hard for me to listen to.

    Really we need a full Celeste OST review, I can't name a bad track in this game while the masterpieces are so many: reflection, quiet and falling (especially the remix), scattered and lost, confronting myself, and there's also incredible farewell music like joy of rememberance and beyond the heart, if I were to be asked to reccommend just one or two it wouldn't be nearly enough

    I like too much to think that Lena Raine is a little "Mozart" of today, she is not as popular as he was, but she makes such good music in every game she is involved in that it is incredible.

    The soundtrack for Celeste is incredible, and the game itself is also a blast no matter how many times I fail a jump.
    I'd like to recommend, if you'd allow it, Chicory: A Colorful Tale, for which Lena also made the soundtrack. It's an amazing game that needs more people be aware of it.

  • @Professor_Wisteria_
    @Professor_Wisteria_ 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    i think my favorite little musical detail is that Chapter 1's music has this contrasting arpeggio where it's going up the scale and also down the scale at the same time, almost as if it was holding itself in place
    and then later on in Summit the falling arpeggio is gone because Madeline has accepted the parts of herself that "drag her down" and now they are working together to literally rise up, so all that's left in the music are the notes leading up towards the peak
    Lena Raine did a fantastic job on this ost i could talk about it for probably hours

    Now that the video is up I've got to bring it up.
    The composer is a trans woman. And the game itself is about a trans woman. I'm a trans woman. The game on the surface is about combing a mountain to prove you can. It's a fun and difficult platformer, more advanced than but similar to any 2d Mario game.
    But it's actually about over coming your own trauma caused by being fully rejected by society. By being told over and over you're not who you are. About fighting your inner demons of self hatred and doubt. About looking for the proof you have the strength to fight anything that will come for you. It's hopeful.
    I suck at the game and expressing my self. But Celeste is a very emotional game, every piece is tied together to shape a metaphor about how it feels to face adversity. Similar to how one would face difficulty climbing an impossibly tall mountain.
    Also this composer, is the new composer for modern minecraft an ost you recently posted that I loved BTW.

    • @anamora9462
      @anamora9462 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey! A trans sister here :3 can confirm Celeste also hits a very emotional cord for me, specially with how much I can relate to struggling with anxiety and it’s given me an amazing tool to understand my own issues. I also suck at the game but I’ve been replaying it to hopefully get 100% lol I figured if there’s a game that’s worth replaying, it’s Celeste

    • @JaggerG
      @JaggerG ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I adore the detail that the lead developer made the story based on their personal feelings, and didn’t even realize it had been a trans journey until they discovered they’re trans nonbinary during development of the DLC.
      Actually, the beauty of it is, the obstacles in the game aren’t *about* them being trans at all. The anxiety, depression, internal conflict; all of that stuff, though common among the trans community, are also separate. There’s no direct correlation from the basic issues to the identity traits. They manifest into forms based on the traits, such as fear of one’s reflection, self-harm, and dissociation. So although Madeline herself is trans, the struggle is super relatable to all types of people. Someone could have been raised in a cult and totally relate to fear of creepy old temples and self image issues. Just as easily, an average angsty teen can certainly shudder at the thought.
      The real nice thing about this, IMO, is that it’s normalizing her. This is a story about a trans girl becoming a mountain climber, and it is *not* a story about a girl being trans. Y’all make up some percentage of people on Earth, and you’re getting your due representation here. A critically acclaimed piece has proven it’s okay for you to exist in popular media.

    You know, ever since I started watching your channel, I realized I focus and listen more to my favorite game music. I mean, I listen and discover new stuff in them which I didn't before. I guess I learned how to pick out different musical elements in the background, like melodies and stuff like that.
    For example, I always knew the awesome bass in Persona 5 Royal's Take Over, but this week, I discovered how it goes up-up-down-up, so the rythm of it. Which I never really paid that much attention, but I do now! So you are the reason I pay more attention to music now, thank you!!!

    It’s kinda funny - this game is sooooo much harder than classics like Super Mario Bros. Yet, due to the collaboration of music, graphic art, dialogue, and game mechanics, it’s so uncommon for people to ragequit. It’s so immersive that you as the player feel like you’re on a personal journey, too. Even if you take a pass on the side collectibles and bonus stages, and just finish the main quest, it feels so fulfilling.

    The game is divided into levels and each level has an OST track; a track is divided into segments, each one corresponding to a segment of that level.
    The music is arranged into segments so that, in-game, while the player stays in one part of the level, that segment can be looped, and then when the player transitions into the next segment of the level, this can trigger the music to dynamically and smoothly skip/fade from one segment of the track to (basically) the corresponding bar of the next segment of the track, and then that segment will be looped. This is an identifiable technique of "dynamic music" for games that you will see a lot.
    This is especially noticeable in Resurrections, where the changes are clear, but it's true of the one you listened to before it, and probably of all of them on the OST.
    [edit: missed a detail]

  • @karliah1337
    @karliah1337 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Celeste is one of my favorite soundtracks mainly because of the way it changes along with the gameplay when moving to different areas. On my first time playing the game, I didn't realize what was going on until that intense 3rd section kicked in. I just had to put the controller down and listen for a moment to really take in what was happening. Definitely a 10/10 experience.
    Another OST worth looking into would be NieR: Automata, composed by Keiichi Okabe. Similar to this one, the songs are loop-able and change their dynamics depending on the context of the gameplay, with 3 levels of intensity, with and without vocals, and an accompanying 8-bit version for a "hacking" minigame. Also of note, all of the songs (except for one) are sung in a made-up "chaos language" that's described as an approximation of what Japanese, French, and English would sound like blended together in the distant future. The words portray emotion exceedingly well, but they're unintelligible on purpose so that they accompany but don't distract from the gameplay. It won at The Game Awards 2017 - Best Score/Music and is probably my favorite OST to date.

    Hey!
    I thorougly enjoy your channel, its fantastic!
    Since you're doing a series on video game soundtracks, you absolutely HAVE to do something about the Touhou Project. Its creator, ZUN, is a fantastic musician and builds his games' bossfights around the musical pieces, so they're an incredibly important part to his output. Also, he's been a huge inspiration on Toby Fox, and since you liked Undertale you'd be really amiss if you didn't listen to some of ZUN's stuff. He's an absolute legend in the indie-game scene and inspired countless other musicians, especially in Japan (amongst which are Unlucky Morpheus whom you may have heard of, they're a popular Japanese Symphonic Metal Band), and has been keeping his project alive for 26 years.
    Personally, I recommend "Bloom Nobly, Cherry-Blossom of Sumizome ~ Border of Life", "Bad Apple!", "Cosmic Mind ~ Emotional Skyscraper", "Necrofantasia", "Suwa-foughten Field" or "U.N: Owen was her?"

    Some of the comments focused on the character interactions, but the gameplay varies through resurrections too. The level starts off quite mysterious; the campfire has an eerie glow and the background is sparkly, and you start investigating the area, diving down to find some strange things you can't really interact with.
    Then after meeting the other character, the gameplay picks up. The mysterious blocks "light up" and you can suddenly interact with them, and there's a lot of motion and excitement in how you can use them.
    After working your way back up, there's a pause in the action as you meet the new character again and have an... unsettling conversation that turns bad, and then the chase sequence is on as you are escaping from her.
    At the end of the chase, there's sort of a fever dream where it turns very strange and startling for a few seconds, and you cut it off partway through that.
    After that, you wake up and find it was seemingly all a dream, and then play back through a less mysterious version of the level. I assume that would be the next track in the OST you didn't get to, but I'd have to actually hear it to jog my memory.

    Speaking about leitmotifs here, I think a fun series for you to look at would be No More Heroes. Over the course of four games, the original game's theme leitmotif gets weaved into many songs. Here's a sample of a song from each game in the series in chronological order with very differing styles:
    No More Heroes 1: th-cam.com/video/ThXV6T-Pq9k/w-d-xo.html
    No More Heroes 2: th-cam.com/video/q-V8htEtAYI/w-d-xo.html
    No More Heroes - Travis Strikes Again: th-cam.com/video/VOHG__d2r-o/w-d-xo.html
    No More Heroes 3: th-cam.com/video/_5fHeD0U3R4/w-d-xo.html
    I'm still here! Enjoying the journey you've been taking.

    The game doesn't look like the artwork, it's totally old school 2D 8bit pixel art style and it's very well made, it's beautiful! BUT it also is a very hardcore game where you die and retry a LOT even when you're good at the game so I wouldn't recommend it to someone trying to get into gaming, it could get very frustrating very fast depending on what types of games you like
