Becky, Love your videos. I've always needed help (and yes! I've read plenty on the subject) in separating a hen with her eggs (away from the other chickens) when she is setting. After I've touched the eggs and relocated her, she doesn't set anymore. How is this done? Do you have a video on it somewhere?

did you know that you can tell the difference between a girl chick and a boy chick by picking them up without holding their legs, and if its a boy, he will pick up his legs, and if its a girl, then she will just let her legs hang. at least that's what I've heard... from my teacher...

If you buy during chick days at local farm stores straight runs can be picked through for pullets by more experienced growers leaving only cockrells. If you order straight runs from hatchery they should be as the group of eggs hatched. About half and half.

Pullet comes from other languages. Originally pullus is Latin for Chicken young animal, then Old French is poule, then Old French again poulet, then Middle English pullet. Cockerel comes from more than one place. It is rooted in Medieval Latin coccus, but also French, and Scandinavian languages. The names really do make sense because just as other words in our language come from old ,and sometimes distant origins these do too. To learn more about words origins try searching for the word in dictionaries that supply origins of words.

I did buy a half dozen straight run Blue Saphire chicks as I had never owned the breed. All were roosters, and 5 look like Rocks, only one looks like a Blue Saphire. I enjoy having a mixed flock of brown egg layers, so no worries. Each rooster gets time with the ladies, then the crock pot. I kept more roosters than I needed too long once, and had 3 killed by a more dominant rooster while I was at work. I try to keep that from happening now by keeping only 1 rooster with a small flock of hens.

If you actually NEED a rooster, you can often find them for free. People who already have one don't need
another one, so the hen broods a few chicks, one or more is a rooster, so they give them away for free.
