Council Mountain Idaho - Longest Hike For Crappy Snow

  • I hiked a long way to ski crappy snow. I was anxious for some exercise so I thought a hike and a ski would do the trick. Council Mountain is located in the Payette National Forest and measures at 8,126 feet. You can see it from highway 55 driving through Valley County, ID. I had never been there before, and since the roads were clear I thought it would be an opportunity to hike to the peak to be able to ski down with what little snow we have. The hike took me a long time, from where I parked I think I hiked something like 11-12 miles round trip. I don't know how much elevation gain I hiked. The scenes were really pretty once you got to Granite Basin. I did see some good lines that I would like to come back to and explore.

That is a great hike without snow. Love the views there and all the bigfoot forest road signs

That’s a really great trail. If you go to the top of Council Mountain in September there are lady bug nests at the very top. Tens of thousands of lady bugs.

I’m going to be riding Council Mountain for the next two winters. I got a splitboard shop/art studio in Council. Let’s rid it in powder conditions.

    Hey Dan,
What hiking boots do you use? I've been looking for a replacement pair for later season hunts when there's snow on the ground, etc.

Hi dk, on this video I am using the boots I got from Air Force Basic Training, which are not the best, they totally gave me blisters. Usually, when there is snow, I am hiking with my ski boots, and in the spring I will bring some Altra trail running shoes for the approach and then switch to ski boots when I can start touring. Send me an email, and I can forward you to my friend that hunts, and he may have some good suggestions. Granted, he is in the military too so I don't know if he uses his BMT boots as well haha.

@@DanNoakes Got it. I'm in a similar but different situation. Wearing the same boots carrying over from the summer's fire season. But as you know, cold feet ain't fun!
