9:58 Gary Oldham over here blending so far into his character no one ever recognizes him. Edit: Gary Oldman
I recognized Gary Oldham. He's related to Gary Oldman right?
;)
@@dubbleplusgoodautocorrect is a valiant beast who makes me look stupid on the regular
This was the first movie I ever saw Gary Oldman in. The next time I saw him I definitely did not recognize him.
@@dubbleplusgood😂😂
Gary Oldman is 13 days younger than Gary Numan.
Also Alabama is one of the most toughest most badass woman characters..she takes a beating and refuses to talk and even taunts him and ends him
I remember a chick friend I knew love this movie jus because of the alabama beating scene 😊 is the most bad ass
18:02, I’m a Black man and this scene always makes me laugh. I overlook the N words because it’s used as way to subvert the racism and pride of Walken’s character Vincenzo Cocotti. Cocotti is so proud to be Sicilian which he should be. So Clarence’s dad Clifford right away sees that this pride is also a weakness so he attacks it.
When you see Cocotti laugh and even kiss Clifford’s cheek, it’s a sign of grudging respect. He had been masterfully outflanked and could barely contain his rage. Masterpiece of character acting and writing.
What you said is exactly what my impression of the cleverness of this exchange was, but I couldn’t quite put it into words, which you did perfectly thank you😂
one of the best analyses ive ever read of this brilliant scene. If you didnt knw, Christpher Walken says this is his favorite scene of his entire career. "Im a dancer. Hopper and I, we partner well together."
My favorite part is him asking for a cigarette before he says enough to get himself killed. Brilliant scene.
@@gnosisevolving In my career I've worked with several Sicilians before. All of them were very nice decent folks. But like this fictional character very very proud of their Sicilian heritage.
@@slchance8839 Wow I didn't know Walken felt that way about this scene
I love how the whole point of Denis Hopper telling that story was so he could get a quick end cause he knew sooner or later he was gonna have to give up his own son through torture. People criticize Tarrantino for using the N word so much in that scene, but that was the point, it was used so he could trigger a "Proud Sicilian" into facing the reality that his own ego and racism could not deal with.
None of it is true either. Sicilians only have between 2-5% North African DNA and close to 0% Sub-Saharan African DNA. The Moors were mostly Arab and didn't mix with the populations they conquered very much.
@@jackieboy453 Ironically the story is flipped on its head. The “Wops from Northern Italy” used to share the dark Mediterranean features but many have blonde hair and blue eyes today because they were conquered by Celts who were the ones that “did so much fuckin' ” that “they changed the blood-line for ever”.
@@jackieboy453 Tarrantinos tribe helped the moors invade Spain they're doing the same to the west in general today, That line in the film was Tarrentino mocking the likes of gutz1981 who don't know their history and are doomed to repeat it. 😴
'Hoosiers', 'Giant', 'Apocalypse Now', 'Easy Rider', 'True Grit'...this is my favorite Dennis Hopper performance!
I’ll be the movie nerd here and offer this: On the DVD commentary QT did, QT said Hopper’s speech was a story QT was told as a kid by his mom’s black boyfriend. He always remembered it and because he liked that guy a lot and loved watching movies with him as a kid, he wrote it into the screenplay.
He did not state, but I suspect, this is also the reason QT has interracial relationships in so many of his films, starting with ‘Pulp Fiction’ where QT as Jimmy has a black wife (Bonny) and of course, Marcellus and Mia.
I love how this movie basically focuses on characters who would normally be supporting or minor characters in a crime story, and the larger players are just drawn out cameos. It's so unconventional, but it works.
Sin City
Tarantino wrote this when he was very young, and it was basically the story of his fantasy life. Clarence works in a comic shop and loves kung fu movies. Quentin worked in a video rental shop and loves kung fu movies. The big difference is that Clarence does things Quentin couldn't do, but wishes he could.
True that! Love how Clarence mentions the good bad and the ugly as 1 the best movies ever... quentin totally loves that movie.
I wonder where the feet scene would have been if Taratino directed it?
@@johnnybraccia452 Well, there is James Gandolfini's foot. ^^
Quintessential dialog. Remember speech made this movie.
That scene with Dennis Hopper and Chris Walken, from the time he asks for the cigarette, just epic. He knew he was done, so he decided to out like a boss. Props to him, and RIP Mr. Hopper.
Masterclass in acting, the scene with Hopper and Walken.
The best scene in true romance
That's definitely Tarantino dialog.
What Cassie and some other people fail to understand is.. To an italian mobster the biggest insult to them would be to be seen as an eggplant.. Youre basically saying you come from some black guy that your mother banged.. Thats stuff you say if you absolutely positively wants to die.. Except no substitute... See what i did there.? 😊
Look at the Will Smith movie Enemy of the State.. There's a speech in that about the same thing..
But yes.. Clarence's dad knew he wasnt walking away from that meeting.. So he decided to give the italians a little story to go on.. That they came from something lower than dogs acording to them.. A big fuck ya all and the horse you rode in on.. 😊
@@ethelwulfmountbattenderoth2286 Yes, apparently it's something he said in real life, he mentioned it in an interview. He had a Sicilian roommate in his youth and he said that when they were breaking balls.
People easily forget Bronson Pinchot (Pinch-O) is in this movie. Balki from Perfect Strangers. Dude gets capped quickly in the beginning of the Mexican standoff. The late Chris Penn (Nice Guy Eddie) again in one of Tarantino’s Mexican standoff but it’s even more epic involving different groups of guys.
The late Conchata Ferrell from Two and a Half Men with a hilarious scene with Michael Rapaport. The late James Gandalfini in this one. Love when he told Alabama she had heart. The late Tom Sizemore is in this one. Like five of the actors already died (Hopper, Gandalfini, Penn, Sizemore, Ferrell).
Saul Rubinek is a good actor. He was solid in BlackBerry last year. Eric Allan Kramer who said I hate f*cking cops protrayed a great Alan Hale Jr. (Skipper in Gilligan’s Island). The same year in 1993, he was in Robin Hood: Men in Tights as Little John. We’re men, we’re men in tight….YES!
It’s an all-star cast. This movie came before Pulp Fiction that made Samuel L. Jackson even bigger. He had small roles in Coming to America and Goodfellas. He’s hold onto your butts in Jurassic Park. Small role again in True Romance but it was Pulp Fiction that made him took off.
As Cassie said, Patricia Arquette’s Alabama really is the only likable character in it. Like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, she’s a hooker with a heart of gold. I love Tarantino movies. He creates guy wet dream movies. Usually not much nudity. It’s over the top violence and extremely vulgar language.
If you want a rom-com, then watch Pretty Woman. Now that’s a Rated R rom-com. There are some sex scenes in it that can make kiddies uncomfortable to look. I remember being 10 and thought cool! 😂
One of the greatest ensemble casts in history.
Gandolfini is absolutely terrifying in his scene. You can see the sociopathic intensity and rage he brought to Tony Soprano right there.
"Fiddler on the roof is against the algorithm!" That's a line i'll never forget :D
Fiddler is Awesome ! its a Classic
I now want her to watch Fiddler on the Roof next.
I don't AI is as problematic as we think, yet.
"Are there people like this? I hope there aren't really people like this."
Never change, Cassie, you're a cold drink of refreshing innocence.
Exactly, just like when she asks at 26:13: “What does uncut mean?”
I saw this movie for the first time when I was in college. I instantly fell in love with Alabama. Like the kind of love where you almost feel empty inside that you don't at least know this person. I must have watched this movie 20 times that first week, lol. 15+ years passed by and as an adult in the real world I was at Wal-Mart one night getting stuff and decided to go look at movies before I left. I saw this one cheap and remembered liking it so picked it up. I had forgotten completely about Alabama until she came on screen and that same feeling came flooding back to me. To this day I still feel little hints of that when seeing this movie. I've never had any actress (not even Patricia Arquette) affect me the way Alabama Worley did.
I remember about 6 months after this movie came out, and maybe half of all the girls I knew in California were wearing something similar to that short bob cut and dropping contrived Southern slang in their everyday speech - obviously imitating Alabama's character. To say she had a bit of an impact for a relatively low-profile movie is a massive understatement.
Also, the dialogue and camera work between Hopper and Walken is my favorite 'tough guys' exchange in cinema history. It's played so incredibly well (and Tarantino is possibly the best there is at writing scenes like this), and is so effective at getting everyone's hopes up - just to pitilessly dash them to the floor - that it could be a short film masterpiece on it's own.
Dennis Hopper (the Dad) knew he was going to get tortured and killed and probably reveal where Clarence had gone, so he tried to offend Christopher Walken so much that he'd just kill him and end it.
This is exactly correct, and what I was coming in here to post. Nice people like Cassie don't have an easy time with making sense of that scene. "You're a cantaloupe" was Walken's character revealing through barely concealed fury that he was going to blow the dad's head open like a melon, but he's struggling to keep it in because he doesn't want his victim to panic, since it's much messier. It's a masterful scene, written brilliantly and acted to perfection, and it's really shows off Tarantino's chops as a writer.
Well, and the history Hopper told was correct.
Also knew he'd planted it in Walken's head so deep that everytime he looked into a mirror he'd think of him & his historical fact for the rest of his life.
@@rivercitymud Also, eggplant in Italian is moolian. Their version of the "N" word is moolian so him calling him eggplant is basically calling him the "N" word.
None of it is true either. Sicilians only have between 2-5% North African DNA and close to 0% Sub-Saharan African DNA. The Moors were mostly Arab and didn't mix with the populations they conquered very much.
That James Gandolfini grin or smirk. It's so charming. 🤣 I miss that dude.
This was very early in Brad Pitt’s career, although he was rapidly making a name for himself.
He's absolutely hilarious as Floyd…and he’s 100% responsible for almost all the carnage in the film by being so blissfully honest under questioning in his stoner haze...not to mention that his cheerful honesty keeps him from getting a hair harmed on his head.
So true and so few clue into how wasted he is except for when remembering locations and directions to those locations
Brad Pitt was already a rising star when this was made and offered the lead role.
He declined because he felt it too similar to the movie
Kalifornia, which he had just done.
He was friends with director Tony Scott though and wanted to do something just to play a part and help out his friend.
He selected the role of Flloyd and thought up the idea to make the character a stoner as every time the character appeared in the script, he was on the couch.
@@KrazyKat007
Right...basically what I already said. Nice job with your "ackshually" comment.
@@keefriff99 You’re making it sound as though Brad Pitt was only in that small role because it was so early in his career he wasn’t that famous yet.
That’s not true.
Pitt was already leading films offered the lead for this one.
That’s not at all what you said
The scene with James Gandolfini and Patricia Arquette is amazing on so many levels. He's telling her what it's like to kill somebody for the first time and then we see her do it to him.
Throughout the scene, you're thinking Clarence is going to come back and save her, and yet instead we get a petite woman taking down a large proficient killer, male. Alone. There is no damsel in distress trope here. This was amazing fight choreography. There was no cheese to it, it was raw and looked real. Even the pacing of entry, first hit, monologue, and then the real fight scene, is a masterclass exhibit for how to do a small vs big fight and be story-relevant.
That line of dialogue about how it is to kill someone for the first time is brutal...and probably true. Like anything in life your first time doing a particular act is hard.
@@johnnybraccia452 I've only seen one other movie that keeps things realistic like that. It was the movie The Kingdom with Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman. There is a really rough scene in which Batman and Garner are fighting a bad guy who is huge.
The scene is long and brutal but it takes the two of them fighting together (while taking a serious beating) to bring this guy down. Thinking back on it, had the Kingdom been made today they would have had Garner (who is only 5 foot 8) totally body the guy solo.
Fun fact: the actor Sonny Chiba in the street fighter film they are watching in the movie theater is playing Hatori Hanzo in Kill Bill; the sword smith that makes the sword for The Bride.
Yeah, Chiba is important to Quentin.
Wouldn't it be great if she reacted to Street Fighter??
@@djaynorequest a kids film. Why do people want her to react to all these kids films.? Somebody else said something about some kids stuff. Shes a grown woman with kids most of her fans seems to be 30-50 yeara old.. Why would we want kids stuff. What's next He Man The Movie ? 😁
@ebbhead20 You obviously are lacking in movie history. We were talking about Sonny Chiba. If you know True Romance, you'll know that Clarence went to a Street Fighter trilogy showing which featured Sonny Chiba...it's from the 70s and is a very violent martial arts trilogy that Quentin Tarantino is fascinated with. He had Sonny play Hatori Honzo in Kill Bill. I'm not talking about the movies based on the arcade game from the 90s...smh
@@ebbhead20 Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter movies have nothing to do with what you know as Street Fighter, they're early 70s kung fu movies
Gary Oldman is the actor who played Drexel… You’ve seen him before. He was Commissioner Gordon in the Christian Bale Batman films… in those, he more or less played himself.
But in other roles, he completely disappears. This being one of them. Also as Sid in “Sid and Nancy. Dracula in “Bram Stokers Dracula” Oswald in “JFK” and many others.
He really is one of the all-time greatest actors.
No mention of Tiptoes?
@@jared6200 I had not heard of that until you mentioned it. Googled it and now i’m intrigued… considered one of the worst movies ever made and Gary Oldman plays a little person? Yes, I will definitely be checking that out! Love a good “bad” movie!
You left out one of his greatest roles, next to his role here as Drexl, and that is Stansfield in Leon, or The Professional. While he’s played a lot of great and memorable characters over his career, if someone asked me for the best examples of his acting ability - I’d point to his portrayals of Drexl and Stanfield. The man is a true chameleon. And both characters, while vastly different, are diabolically evil.

So many great roles any one could say “What about this?”
Tarantino originally wanted Joan Cusack to play Alabama while Tony Scott wanted Drew Barrymore. Neither were available. Personally I like Patricia Arquette for the role.
Joan Cusack or Drew Barrymore?? Wow, 3 very different feels for a character. Wonder if they auditioned.
Thank goodness they weren't.
I'm curious as hell what Joan Cusack would have been like.
@@dudermcdudeface3674yeah me too.
Arquette is irreplaceable in the role.
Three standout scenes in this movie. The Dennis Hopper/Christopher Walken Sicilian scene, The Drexel Spivey (Gary Oldman)/Christian Slater scene, and the James Gandolfini/Patricia Arquette scene. All are great scenes if you can handle them.
Agreed
The whole movie is a loose sequence of standout scenes.
The cast of this movie was loaded from top to bottom; to this day the little set-to between Hopper and Walken remains one of my favorite scenes of all time 😂
I know what moment you’re talking about, but did autocorrect do something to your text, because “the little set-to” isn’t a thing.
@@tempsitch5632 "set-to" means a usually brief and vigorous fight or debate

Please, please, please, now, in the name of everything holy, you have to watch Christian Slater and Marissa Tomei in the movie UNTAMED HEART…… somebody please please please back me up on this, LMAO

much more Cassie's speed too;)
Untamed Heart is good. I used to eat breakfast at the diner they filmed it in. The owner would sit down at my table and tell me stories about the filming of it as I ate. Lol!
Good recommendation!! 🫡
In the scene where Hopper gets tortured and killed, he lied to him about the events of yesterday and Walken explained there was no way he could lie to him. So Hopper’s character told him some insulting facts about his Sicilian bloodline.
Hopper insulted him so that he would get so mad he'd kill him fast and not torture him to death. He didn't want to give up his son and he was afraid he would if he was tortured. He offended him so that he'd have no choice but to murder him in return.
The look Walken’s character gives Dennis Hopper is not so much “like” as admiration or respect, because he knows he will now have to kill him without getting the information he wants. The Sicilian has been out-Sicilianed.
To be insulted to be part of a particular bloodline is straight spiritual hatred. That CAIN spirit.
@@raptagon2303 I don’t think the mafia murderer character was exactly intended as a role model.
Yup, so how does it feel to come from some eggplant.? 😊
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. It completely turns the Hollywood romance onto its head and there are so many quotable lines from some of the best actors around.
My friend once met Gary Oldman... and I was so jealous. My dream is to say... "You Must've thought it was white boy day..." To Gary Oldman... and he would laugh, and we would become good friends.
Interesting fact about this movie, is that Quentin Taranino originally planned a different ending that would have made the movie seem completely pointless. The director recorded the happier ending and Tarantino admitted it was better.
The original Tarantino ending had Clarence dying and Alabama leaving alone wiht the money.
The point is stealing from drug dealers always have a cost.
Tarantino could have made his original ending great, but Tony Scott directed it, and he doesn’t have endings like that in him, so it was wise for him to change the ending. At the end of the day, it’s a Tony Scott movie.
that ending is on the blu-ray
It's simplistic to say Tarantino admitted that it was better.
He said that Tony Scott's ending was better for the movie Tony made - and that Tarantino would have directed it differently and in a way where the original ending worked.
His point was that it turned into a different movie under Scott, and under his direction, a happier ending was more appropriate.
Got to meet Dennis Hopper at a "Hoosiers" reunion here in my town. He said he absolutely loved this scene. Said he had to bite his lip off camera to keep from smiling too big. His EXACT WORDS:
*"If I know I'm about to die, I'm going out a happy man."*
Hey, he got to kiss with Patricia Arquette, i would be a happy man too!
@@NecramoniumVideo I'd die a happy man too. She is the absolute definition of cute/sweet/awesome

Oh my, the Sicillian scene. lol
Fun Fact: Director Tony Scott gave Patricia Arquette the purple Cadillac as a gift after shooting wrapped, as the Ford Futura she was driving at the time kept on breaking down.
Also, even though the film feels like a Quentin Tarantino one since he wrote the script, but the credit has to go to Tony Scott who was the director! He was Ridley Scott's younger brother and Tony has a fantastic filmography himself! I hope you get to them!
Cassie has already reacted to a bunch of Tony Scott and I think she enjoyed them all. Top Gun, Days of Thunder and Crimson Tide.
You can rent the film used purple Caddy, for the day in Wilmington NC!
you’re totally right, but i like to think if Tarantino had directed it himself, it still would have turned out the same way 👍
It’s Balki Bartokomous!! Now we are so happy, we do the dance of joy!!
That is one of my all time favorite movies. Dennis Hoppers Sicilian dialog was epic.
22:52 the Alabama scene is rough but she is so tough and her spirit pulls her through. It’s so empowering. Plus, I like that they didn’t try to have her be SA which it feels like violent movies tend to do
it's all in the editing, you actually don't SEE anything
When Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, James Gandolfini, (and even Samuel L. Jackson;) are the primary villains, it takes Christian Slater, Dennis Hopper, and Val Kilmer's Elvis to be the heroes! 👍
& in fact, Quentin wrote Patricia Arquette's character so that she surely isn't a normal "maiden in distress" because she rescues herself! 🚽🤕 So good for him & her! 👍👍

To prove they were safe, Tony Scott had a crew member fire a shot at him causing him to bleed from a blank fragment. This prompted Tony Scott to switch to safer, less explosive blanks. A couple of Christian Slater movie recommendations; if you haven't yet seen them- Heathers, and Pump Up the Volume. Love your reactions!
This is such a great movie. I think Cass would love Jackie Brown if she ever watches it
Whenever people mention great female characters, the first two they always remember are Ripley from Alien & Sarah Connors from Terminator 2. But for me Alabama is the first character to come to my mind with Buffy being my second, she (Alabama) is the total package of Beauty and toughness.
This movie is so awesome! The scene with Walken and Hopper was so chilling. And I think that that was one of Gary Oldman's finest performances.
Yes, and Gary's role in State of Grace which is nearly impossible to find a copy of nowadays.
Another joke is from Bronson Pinchot, who plays Elliot. He just came from the Sitcom, "Perfect Strangers" where he played a loveable, naïve, just off the boat foreigner from either a Greek Island or somewhere near by. The role as Eliot was completely opposite of his 7 year role as the loveable Balki.
Hes that gay art guy in all the Beverly Hills Cop movies too.. Where Eddie ends up taking the piss.. Get da fuck outofhere.... NOooooo, im serious.. Getthefuckoutofhere.. NO! It's a whole routine that always makes me laugh when they do it.. 😊
The marimba music and narration in the beginning are a tribute to the movie Badlands. It’s also about a couple (teenagers in this case) who go on a crime scene.
Sonny Chiba would later star in Kill Bill, he played Hattori Hanzo, the swordsmith.
The scene with Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper is, by far one of the best written and performed.. ever.

Also, R.I.P. Tony Scott (brother of Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator's director, Ridley Scott). Talented, yet troubled filmmaker.

I wish Robbery Homicide Division lasted longer.
On the roller coaster, thats Balki Bartakimus from Perfect Strangers, an 80s sitcom star.
Ridley Scott's brother was a phenomenal director. True Romance, Crimson Tide, Revenge, A Man On Fire...so many good films. Sad the way he went out, but it was on his own terms. This masterpiece is on my top ten list for sure.
You are too funny. So many of the things you say just have me dying. You seem like a genuinely kind person. I hope you have all the happiness and success in the world.
This is my all time favorite movie and I haVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR YOU TO WATCH THIS
Such an incredible cast. Every scene, it's like, oh yeah, he's in this! Great movie!
Love this movie so much! Val Kilmer as Elvis.....Great touch.....Chris Walken....'It aint any kinda fun!'
Hans Zimmer's theme "You're so cool" just makes my day, Val Kilmer as the spirit of Elvis, the juxtaposition of sublime pure love against a backdrop of the darkest most vile humanity - so many opposing spectrums mixed together really makes this a special film. Daniel Rappaport won my heart as Dick (was overjoyed when he showed up as Knight Titus in the Fallout show) just an amazing talent. Whenever I go shopping I always remember to pick up "cleaning products" thanks to Brad Pitt.
Michael, not Daniel
@@keithgoode6313 Thanks,...it ended in "el"🤔
I loved this movie when it came out. One of Tarantino's best scripts.
I Adore this movie. Always have, always will.
"Uncut" means that there's nothing added to it to dilute it. Most of the time when you buy a dose of it for personal use, it's been 'cut' with some other white powder (e.g., powdered sugar, flour). It lets them sell more doses from the same batch of product and make more money.
Inglourious Basterds! Inglourious Basterds! That's a bingo.
This film has the best of everything...the writing of Tarantino, the directing of Scott, the classic character acting by Hopper, Walken, Oldman, Kilmer & Pitt. The romance, the violence, the humour. Saw this in the theater when I was 22. Your reaction reminds me of my wife watching anything by Tarantino. 😂❤❤❤❤
Yes,SLJ,abd the chap with the dreadlocks is Gary Oldman 🎩
Drexel is one of my favorite Gary Oldman roles
yep, others are:
Immortal Beloved
The Contender
Murder in the First
Chatahoochee
For another silly but likable Christian Slater movie from around the same time I would recommend "Kuffs". And if you want truly stellar performances from him and Patricia Arquette, I would suggest the TV series Mr Robot (Slater) and "Severance" (Arquette)
I forgot Balki Bartokomous (Bronson Pinchot) was in this........love that guy!
Now I am so happy, I do the Dance of Joy!!!!
Brad Pitt was in Ridley Scott's THELMA AND LOUISE before this, and Ridley's brother Tony directed this movie. Tony Scott also directed Brad in SPY GAME once he was a huge star.
Tony was also possibly the only director who not only could tolerate Val Kilmer, but actually worked with him multiple times.
Holy shit, let's go! Been waiting for this one to come up for soooo long. This is one of my favourite movies of all time :)
Cassie's face during the "Sicilian" scene 😆
I was in my early 20s when this movie came out. The list of amazing actors in this movie is great. One of my favorite movies ever. Gary Oldman is over the top GREAT
Pausing at 23.25, just to make a comment about your "discomfort".
The scene where Alabama walks into the motel room, and James Gandolfini is in there waiting for her, is the most uncomfortable and panic ridden I have ever felt in a movie theater. It was just so 100% clear to me that this was not going to go well, and not only was I right, but the level of "unwellness" it went to was just insane.
To this day, after having watched this movie several times, this scene STILL makes me uncomfortable and panicky.
Christian Slater and John Travolta in *BROKEN ARROW* (1996). Cassie would love this action film. 👍👍
Haha! "Outstanding, Hale! That's the spirit!" I love that movie.
