    2 carb. installed on my Echo srm-225 (12 years old) paid 22.00 for carb. 1st issue bogging down, changed carb, 2nd issue a few years later , ran for a minute and stopped, changed carb....runs great again...for 22.00 $ for me just buy and change, not fooling with carb kit. Great video you posted for viewers !

    My brothers and I used the handles of large serving spoons for taking off bicycle tyres so that the inner tubes didnt get pinched, the handle of a smaller spoon would work to put that grommet in without damaging it, great videos , love your attention to details and thoroughness

    I found that a half inch socket large enough to cover the grommet but no so large it hits the fuel filler neck, was the easiest way to install the fuel grommet with the fuel lines. Learned the hard way by punching a hole in the new lines they are remarkably soft and easy puncture brand new.

      The factory screws have a cap on them that has left hand threads. Get the right size drill bit, press lightly, and they come right out. Otherwise, hammer a small screwdriver into them and turn right to remove. Don't push it in very far, just break through. I'm sure there are plenty of videos about for that.

    I have and regularly use a Homelite ST 385 17” duel cut weed wacker. It was found on the side of the road in a free pile. I took it fully apart cleaned and serviced it and reassembled it. I now hate rust even more along with reverse threaded bolts and spaner clutches. But any way it works great, full choke is useless as it causes it to die but it has a start assist that holders the throttle at about 10% until you touch the throttle handle. I also run it with a fuel mix of 32 to 1.

      I would have got a new carb for 11 bucks on ebay. The Stihl rep did not honor my warranty when I had 2 carbon fiber combi extensions with the same failure. I use echo trimmers commercially and the have given me the longest life. The sthil trimmers you need to adjust the valves frequently. but it sounds like your carb got gummed up from the ethanol in the fuel.

    I wish i would have seen this video first... I have an Echo SRM-225 that's been great for several years, but wasn't running at top form... so I bought the full carb kit and installed it. All good, but I did a few things incorrectly... first the replacement vent line from the kit is too long, so once it fits into the tank it's too low in the tank and bleeds gas instead of air. Fixed that. Made a gallon of 50:1 mix with fresh fuel, and it fired up nicely... however it just wouldn't stay at high RPM and wouldn't cut efficiently. So I did exactly what you described in your video... adjusted the high RPM screw and now it trims like a new unit. Glad you mention that the new unit doesn't have the brass cap; I'm surprised they're allowed to sell them without the cap... I thought that was an OSHA requirement in the US... guess not! Thanks so much for sharing; your the video/sound quality is fantastic, and most importantly you cover topics very well.

    On one of my trimmers, I cleaned my carb at the start of the season to get it running good. On another, I ordered a new pull-cord assembly for it because the old one broke and I have not installed it yet. Since I have two running trimmers, it is hard to take the time to work on the third. I own a small engine repair shop and i am an authorized dealer for many brands - when it comes to carburetors, it is always best to spend the extra $ on the correct OEM or Original carburetor, for 2 cycle equipment it's going to be either Zama, Walbro or Ruixing (rux-ing) the cheap aftermarket carb's are NOT jetted or adjusted properly and will cause performance issues i see it every day cheap aftermarket carbs causing a no start problem, new OEM carburetor solves the problem, And if your equipment happens to be under a manufacturer warranty most are 2-5 years and you work on the equipment yourself instead of taking it to an authorized service dealer - you will void the warranty 100%. also on Echo equipment if you use anything besides an NGK spark plug you will loose up to 1,000 RPM and suffer performance issues.

    I advocate replacing the carburetor over rebuilding. Time to actually rebuild plus parts works out about the same as just replacing. They all need to be adjusted after either. One point to make, I have more customers "flood" their small engines by actuating the throttle trigger when attempting to start. LEAVE THE THROTTLE ALONE TILL ITS RUNNING!!!! I tell people to count to 5-10 before revving the engine. Great video! Keep them coming!

    Echo should have taken a page from Shindaiwa the company they now own. The professional (commercial) Shindaiwa trimmers made yrs ago used TK round slide carburetors vs Walboro rotary. Those round slide carburetors were built to last and have better acceleration. I have a C-27 and a s270 with a handle conversion, both have had the exact same TK carbs on them for 30 yrs and still run great. They have only been rebuilt with new gaskets and diaphragms a few times over that 30 yrs.

    • @scottkuhar
      @scottkuhar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slide type carburetors that Shindaiwa used don't meet EPA emissions regulations, so they really can't be produced anymore. If you look into emissions regulations, you might find that to be the reason Shindaiwa was purchased by Echo in the first place. Rotary valve carburetors work just fine, and are fully adjustable - just not legally by the end user. (it's technically not legal for anyone to sell you the tool unless you're a dealer)

    • @latestplague3762
      @latestplague3762 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scottkuhar TK slide carbs were modified numerous times to meet epa guidelines. They have pushed things to the point of ridiculousness to where you cannot even buy certain models of equipment in the U.S.A anymore. Even making hybrids (engines) which imo are pointless, you still have to mix gas and have the added aggregation of added parts, maintenance, and cost. Rotary work fine, I never said they don't - round slide ARE better and have a better acceleration response. That's not debatable it was proven yrs ago.
      BTW You can still buy slide carbs that are nearly identical to the TKs and still have main,slow,and high adjustments. They work exceptionally well, I have bought a few for myself and family.

It starts cold easily but struggles to get to full power. It takes a few seconds. It idles smoothly but won't stay running. It will shut down. The idle is smooth but it seems starved for fuel. It is the OEM/original carb and old. It is pinned so it might be easier to replace that to try and drill out and adjust.
    I switched to non-ethanol premix and it runs smoothly when running on this fuel. I am thinking that something may wrong with the carb that wasn't fixed in the rebuild. I am checking the spark arrestor next.

      I'd go with spark arrestor. The fuel lines came with a new tank vent right?

    I’ve worked on 2-cycles for decades, and they’re fun to fix and maintain. I’ve got two SRM 2100 units (one’s trash-picked btw, so that one’s free and the other one was a gift from a friend) and they’re OLD!😂 Just bought carby rebuild kits for both (made sure carby type before ordering diaphragm and metering parts) because of constantly stalling after idle. But yeah, much easier to slap in a new carby than tryin’ ta save an old carby, especially when the old parts pool drys up. Oh yeah, I’m big on stocking up on spare parts like carby and fuel line grommet kits.

  • @jasonbusch3624

    Always adjust the low speed first. The low speed is too lean so your high speed screw has to be adjusted alot richer to compensate for the lean low speed screw. If it high idles and don't drop right to an idle it is too lean which you can hear. Once the low is set then adjust the high screw just to the point of getting rid of the miss wide open throttle. Re check the low and high adjustments a second time. Then let set overnight and see how it starts the next day cold. Might need a slight tweek again.

    I run a small engine shop. I can't tell you how many of these aftermarket carburetors I have installed. I tell my customers the same thing: It's a lot cheaper for me to replace this bad carburetor that it is for me to clean/rebuild the bad carburetor. Occasionally, you run in to carburetors that aren't any good. But every time that has happened, the seller is more than willing to refund/replace.

    Excellent job, I have had very good luck with the aftermarket carbs for the most part. If you are mechanical try to replace it. If not take it to a good shop that won't rip you off and try to sell you a new machine. Most small engines are usually repairable unless it was run with no oil. Was you throttle wide open or did it have some more throw available. Thanks for the video.

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      unfortunately the carb is pegged out, it simply will not allow more throw. I might have to look and see if there was a stopper on the top of the barrel assembly.

  • @bobf12

    Well, for no more than a new one costs, I have just bought new ones. You can install a new one and have it running before you can take an old one apart and clean it. Years ago it was a pain in the butt to do this but now with amazon and other companies readily available its just cost effective.

    This trimmer has a catalytic converter. You don't want the fuel mixture to be rich. That will result in more unburnt fuel in the exhaust, which will cause the catalytic converter to run hotter, and burn out prematurely. A rich fuel mixture used to be good for keeping exhaust temps down. Not any more.

    I usually replace mine. I find it so much easier. I do keep the old carbs just in case, so it may be interesting to open them up and see if I can figure out what was wrong with them. Questions I have though, is I always try to get OEM Stihl / Zama parts and pay more for them. I just have this mistrust of Chinese knockoffs. Always wonder if this is an issue. I also wish there was a good adjustment guide out there. I kinda struggle with it.

    • @HomeGaragechannel

    Just for FYI, if your using 87 or 89 octane gas with 2 cycle oil that can be your problem as well. I use 93 octane because there is no ethanol in to. Also if your going to be doing lots of string trimming buy a Stihl. Expensive but worth the money and invest into better equipment.
