    Seriously considering this bike and I'm also in SE Michigan. The spec is so nice on the Essential and Race. I like that they tried to pack as much value into the fork as possible, getting a Fox 36 Performance on a $2,200 bike is awesome. Compared to the Shock/Fork you get on a Full Sus @ the same price its amazing value.

    6:52 some bikes are like that, some are not. I have a Geometron G1, it has double sealed pivots, as the caps have a O-ring, so this works really well, so only pivot I worked on was the rear most pivot as it's the most exposed pivot, I had the bike since late 2019, so about 3 years.

    Nice, thats a HD hardtail compared to my 2021 Niner RDO which i just picked up but really NO bike does everything so providing you can afford it the best scenario is having a nice full suspension and a hardtail. I haven't had a hardtail in about 3 years and i really forgot how much fun they were to ride with XC tires and 21 pounds in weight especially on inclines so i am very happy with mine, I sold stock wheels, crank, cassette and rotors and have XO cassette, crank, 1426 Yishun carbon wheels with 240 EXP hubs and lighter rotors. I am ordering a set of Yishun XC wheels with the 180 hubs 1225 grams. If i want another trail/enduro bike i will get one but for everyday riding a hardtail is much more rider friendly. Bikes sure can get to be expensive toys not including helmets, attire, traveling, etc.

    • @zxtenn
      @zxtenn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just ordered the 1225 gram XC Yishun wheels with DT 180 EXP hubs, $1296.75, only downfall is it takes about a month but GREAT price and the durability is there along with the light weight, will be selling my 30 internal with the 54 upgrade when these arrive.

    Great video and awesome Bike! Took my 2020 Meta HT to a few Bikeparks here in Germany and lots of Singletrails in Austria. Really had a blast! On the blue and red trails it really was way more playful and fun than my old 170mm FS bike. For the really technical stuff it is still tricky, but I guess it's not the bike that limits my rides to be fair

    Corey, think about Hope brakes. I like the Tech 3 V4. Not only are they hardcore but you can set the reach and bite point. I set my front brakes lighter because I have a tendency to pull the lever for confidence boost now - without it affecting my roll.

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do a similar thing with the hc3 levers on Magura brakes. We ended up just putting a smaller 180 rotor on the front of her bikes. 203 rotors with quad piston brakes is just too much for someone under 120lbs, even for DH.😅

      @@justgo4033 Wow! I'm jelly. We have to ride atleast 3 hours to a place with jumps, so jump progress has been slow. SE Michigan is very jump and drop averse. Many riding groups here focus solely on XC, fitness, and Strava. It's like keeping up with the Joneses: XC Fitness edition. Fun, what's that?

    • @justgo4033
      @justgo4033 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dukeofmtb nothing wrong with xc , its all about how you see the trails and if you’re willing to pick up a shovel. By watching your videos you guys seem like you have some awesome trails.

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justgo4033 Definitely nothing wrong with XC. It's just that some of the mtbers here are actively hostile towards riders that like to session stuff, reride sections, or get air. It's their way or the highway. Features are constantly removed. Even a 1 foot drop is deemed too dangerous. Trails are being smoothened out to improve their Strava times. If you have a full face helmet on, they look at you with disdain in their eyes. I've seen guys plow through riders and run them off trails here. Luckily there are some folks working hard to bring our area into the modern era of mountain biking. When we go to North Carolina, people are so nice and friendly. Riders of different disciplines get along wonderfully there. Here, we have a sort of elitism going on. I can't quite wrap my head around it.

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a pretty low engagement hub, but it hasn't been an issue at all. It doesn't skip at all and it's been pretty reliable. I even took this bike to a bike park and rode some blue tech and hit some decent sized drops with it. I'm still very happy with the purchase.

    The Deore M6100 brakes have a design flaw, they use Servowave, but when you adjust the reach in you limit how far the push rod pushes the piston, so the brakes become useless for very short hands but very powerful for long fingers. But Shimano has levers without this silly solution, I think Deore should have had simple lever connected to the push rod instead of a mechanism that separates it. M6000 has this problem too, but Deore M6100 has a weaker lever blade I think, so don't be surprised if you snap it, as they Shimano has changed the design making the blade thinner, I've seen several failures on SLX M7100, but It won't surprise me if the same issue is present on M6100. the M615, M6000 had robust levers that you could bend bac, and would not snap too easily. I've not tried M6100, but tried M600, M615. for me the stock reach position is perfect but the brake is underpowered then. M6100 has better clamp, it should be stiffer, but not tried it, clamp has better clearance, so using various shifting remotes for example, there won't be an clearance issue. but on M6000 there was.

      I'm also 5'9. 32 inseam. Already rockin' a 210mm OneUp on this bike and on the TR, so you can definitely go longer than 120 if you get a OneUp dropper. I ordered some MT Trail brakes for the HT too. We have Magura on all our bikes. It's so easy to get a perfect bleed by pulling a vacuum at the lever end. If only the master cylinder was aluminum, then they'd be truly perfect. Oh, and hc3 levers work on the MT5 master too. That's what Cory has on her Spectral. And having her bike kinda like a DJ is intentional. We wanted the super long dropper so she can slam the saddle and take it to Ray's in Ohio in the winter.

No inconsistent bite point or pump up at all. I've been through so many Shimano brakes, 95% had a wandering bite point, and the front a rear never feel identical. I always give shimano brakes a pull when I see them on someone's bike. They're just so used to that inconsistency, that they don't even realize it's there. @dukeofmtb  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Glad you enjoy the content. You could go with some of the lower spec'd models as well. The Meta HT comes in models that come in at $1200 as well. Or you can go with something like a Trek Marlin 5 at $600 to start with, but you might end up getting a more expensive bike fairly quickly if you get hooked on this hobby. Atleast with the Meta, you have a bike with modern geometry that can ride almost anything, and it'll be worth upgrading the components down the line. The Marlin is a great starter bike, but it won't hold up if you start wanting to do crazier riding beyond XC. This is all just my personal opinion ofcourse. It's all up to you in the end.

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The geo makes it very good over roots, rocks, and fast descents. It does have it's limits though, once it starts getting really rough, you'll either have to go a little slower or be really picky with your line choice. Also, you have to stand more often when pedaling through rough bits than you would on a full sus. On most of our local trails, I don't really miss the rear suspension. I think this bike can handle pretty much anything a short travel full suspension trail bike could handle. It's only when you start hitting very techy dh trails, or gnarly enduro style trails where it starts being out of it's element.

    Hi. I've been looking to buy my first propper MTB and I wanna make sure that I make the right decision. Trying to decide between Canyon Grand Canyon 7 and Commencal meta ht ride (for 1500€). I ride mostly xc-trail: I do some descents but I also want to take on long distances. To me it seems that the Meta offers more of the both worlds. The canyon has a little steep-er head tube angle (67,5 vs meta's 65), but the canyon comes with a dropper post and it costs 300 euros less. Any advice? Thanks.

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Considering your budget and the kind of riding you want to do, I think the Canyon is the better choice. If budget is no issue and you plan to hit bigger features and steeper descents later on, one of the better spec'd Meta HT's might be something to consider.

    • @kostoglousalexandros7509
      @kostoglousalexandros7509 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      But such a bike like the meta HT could handle long distances as well?

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kostoglousalexandros7509 Absolutely. But if you lean more towards XC, the handling characteristics of the Grand Canyon will feel more familiar. A slacker bike requires you to be more active in turns, so it might be more tiring on all day XC rides.

    I’m going to Brevard soon and I’ve seen you’ve ridden the trails in that area. How do trails like Black Mountain and Bennet Gap compare to the difficulty of trails like Potawatomi and Torn Shirt?

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Huge difference! Can't even compare.
      Bennett Gap can be challenging, but it's a whole lot of fun. I highly recommend giving Bennett Gap a shot. You might have to walk a couple spots, but it's still exciting to see the kinds of features that just don't exist in Michigan. At first, it's pretty techy, but then it opens up and gets fast and flowy towards the second half. There'll still be roots, rocks, and small drop offs, but you just gotta be loose and let your bike do it's thing. The second half is like the descents at Poto and Pontiac lake, but slightly steeper and chunkier.
      Now with regards to Black Mountain, the final lowest section(last 10% or so) of Black Mountain is fun and flowy, but if you ride the whole thing, there'll be a lot of hike-a-biking and seemingly endless climbing. There are a lot of sections that are just unrideable. Bring a lot of water if you plan to do all of Black Mountain. If you really want to challenge yourself physically and mentally, Black Mountain is for you.
      Make sure to bring a multi-tool, spare tube, mini pump, etc. We've needed to use this stuff on more than one occasion when riding in western North Carolina.
      Hope this helps. Have fun out there.

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and by the way, when I say flowy, I don't mean smooth. None of these trails are smooth in any sense of the word. I meant to say that you can let off the brakes on these sections and go pretty fast, but it'll still be wonderfully rooty and rocky. Just wanted to clear that up just in case.

      It's a possibility. The first time can be scary. I certainly wouldn't bring a hardtail to these trails. Just give it a try and take it easy. You'll be surprised how quickly you'll grow accustomed to it all. I'd skip Black Mountain trail altogether. It's a nightmare physically. Try Kitsuma first. It'll give you a taste of real classic Pisgah trails without being too overwhelming. If you're bombing down the descents at Torn Shirt and Poto already, you'll be fine. We were scared our first time too, but once you get to the end of a trail, you're gonna wanna do it again anyway. 😁

      I definitely wouldn't get a bigger hardtail for her. It's held up well even some chunky trails and medium sized drops.

      Yup. I ride a medium at 5'9/176cm because it's more playful and more fun on my local trails. It only has 420mm reach compared to my Spire's 460mm. Keep in mind that the seat tube is also on the slacker side(74°). When in a seated position, the reach feels no different than the longer bike. When you stand up to descend is when you might notice. The reach shortens a little due to sag. That might have something to do with it.
