How to fix "door ajar" issue on 2012 Ford Edge with a screwdriver

  • WARNING: This is a destructive procedure. This will permanently fix the issue on a 2012 Ford Edge or similar model of the recurring, known "door ajar" issue... by breaking the switch responsible.
    IMPORTANT: After doing this, when you open the door, you will not get a "door ajar" warning. To me, this was worth it. Too many dead batteries and a brand new battery inspired me to break the damn thing. I've heard of others getting this assembly replaced only to have the issue return. So I figured why not just break it real good until it cooperates?
    If the radio doesn't go off when you exit the vehicle, just open/close a different door. Otherwise, the radio will simply go off on its own after a couple minutes (nothing significant enough to kill your battery).
    Also, I'm not too concerned about the alarm system. The factory alarm and/or aftermarket alarm probably won't sound if someone opens the door without a key. So be warned.

    ***GUYS! BEFORE BREAKING THIS PIECE OFF, ENSURE THAT THE PART THAT THE GUY IN THIS VIDEO BREAKS IS ACTUALLY YOUR CULPRIT!*** Sorry about the caps, but I don't want people breaking this part on their vehicle just to continue having the door ajar error issue. I used to think that this part was causing my door ajar problem, but in my case, the problem is actually caused by the wiring harness that runs between my door and my truck body. The wiring harness is designed to feed in and out of your truck everytime you open and close your door. It's guided by a rubber accordion-style sieve that collapses in on itself, and a hard plastic guide-line that keep your wiring from bending and breaking. However, a lot of Ford doors have an issue where the hard plastic guide-line will start to bend, which then causes your wiring harness to bend everytime you open and close your door. Over a period of time, these wires will start to break. When the wire that feeds your door ajar sensor breaks, then your vehicle will constantly think that the door is open, giving you the same error that the guy in this video has. I hope this comment helps someone.

      Harold Stewart Thanks for the warning! Is that something that's easily fixed? Sometimes my car (Toyota Celica) recognizes that the door is closed, but most of the time, it doesn't. It's not consistent...

    • @TOOLology1
      @TOOLology1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      deprofundis I deduced that my door ajar issue was caused by my wiring harness when I grabbed the wires and kind of pulled them back and forth. After that, my door ajar alarm stayed on constantly. Hahah! So that's one way to figure out if that's your problem. However, no, it wasn't a difficult fix once I gathered the courage to dive into the issue. On my truck (F-150) I pulled the rubber accordion-style sieve away from my door and shoved it most of the way into the hole that the wires feed through in my truck body to give me room to work. Then I carefully cut the tape or sticky vinyl or whatever that was wrapped around the bundle of wires away, exposing the wires themselves. Once I could see the wires, it was obvious which ones were broken. I actually had 2 broken wires. Then I used these things called "butt splices" to reattach the wires. I stripped the tips of the wires, put the exposured copper wiring into each end of the butt splice, then crimped them to prevent the wires from pulling loose. I taped the bundle of wires back up, then replaced the sieve, and it fixed my problem. Hope this helps. Good luck!

    Thank you for this video. Worked like a charm. Please be aware that if you perform this on the front driver side door the radio will stay on when you remove the key and exit the car unless you open and close the passenger door. If you are riding with a passenger that's fine but if riding solo be sure to prevent the radio from staying on. Unless there is a setting I'm unaware on the radio please be aware.

    • @rosario663
      @rosario663 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When working properly, the radio shuts off when the keys are removed and a door is opened. The radio can also be manually shut off by pressing the power button, so there is no need to open a door to shut off the radio. Besides the radio will shut off after 10 minutes anyway when the keys are removed.

      @@franknitty9875Same. Even when I had to replace my entire break system, 2011 Edge, the mechanic got so frustrated. He used WD 40 and it only lasted about a month. He wants the same as the dealer to fix it. It already cost me 2 batteries and I just got a new one. I don't recommend these SUVs. I've spent 1/4 of what I paid for it (used but really clean). Now I know why I got such a bargain. My Ford Escape never gave me problems. Should've just kept it, would be vintage now.

    Before doing all of this call the your local Ford dealer and ask if your vehicle has any recalls. I did and found out that there was a recall on this door latch and the brake booster. Ford has been aware of this issue for years with more than 2.3 million vehicles affected!! The recall is for: Edge, Explorer, Mustang among others. The brake booster issue is a $650+ fix. The door latch is about $200. This is for parts and labor. If you already paid a company to make this fix, and you know where you had the fix complete then obtain the invoice. Then show it to your local Ford Service center and they may reimburse you.

    Hey!!! What's up 2020? Today, 1/22/2020, I got a letter in the mail stating that this issue is now covered under extended warranty until 84,000 miles. Isn't that cute... too little too late Ford. Our Edge has over 150K. But in defense of this car, other than the brake booster, catalytic converter, and the door ajar light, this vehicle has been pretty rock solid and has required only minimal upkeep.

Instead of breaking the switch I sprayed electrical cleaner in the switch and the message came up much less often. I sprayed it once more and it has only happened once or twice since then. Did this with almost a totally dead battery, the warning light which I thought was showing the door closed was masked by something along the lines that there was a charging issue being displayed over it. Well, anyway broke the switch to my amazement @%#$!!!! in the door open position.. duh! Make sure your car is running and don't be a me....LOL.

    Broke this off on a 2013 edge in the correct position with the vehicle running and still shows that it's ajar

    The problem is the gas cap...... It's screwed onto a Ford.

  • @paula6801
    @paula6801 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fix one problem just to create another. Now the door doesn’t say ajar, but now it doesn’t recognize when you open the door and the radio stays on…..draining the battery once again 😒

    How to fix door ajar issue!
    Drive car into a brick wall.
    I like the brick wall idea better.
    Cures all the problems at once.

    so if I had to do both doors, what can I do about the radio issue?

    • @rosario663
      @rosario663 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Press the power button on the radio. Also the radio will go off after 10 minutes when there is no key in the ignition.

    so this will fix the problem however it would be easier to splic the wires together and then you dont brack part of your car

    • @nightshift-riffs8053
      @nightshift-riffs8053 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he is talking about the wires in the boot harness where the door hinges......sometimes there will be a broken wire right inside that harness....

    • @adrieng8838
      @adrieng8838 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I cut the wire in the harness and grounded it. Took 5 minutes. Of course the door never shows open, but I could careless after being woken up to a random alarm, lights not going off, and worrying about a drained battery.

      I would agree with this fix. Its on youtube. I haven't tried it, I wasnt to try a few cleaning techniques first. Basically if the switch is "open" the circuit is open. By removing the panel under the door, finding the switch wire and splitting the required wire to ground. You basically have made the car think the circuit is closed and the door is closed. Again it will think its closed ALL the time. Even when open. The exact opposite you have now, but it will not ding and alarm you to death while driving.

    By breaking this piece off, when you open the door will the dome lights still come on?

    • @jordansche
      @jordansche 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No because the car will no longer know when the door is open.

    Oh sure fix it by breaking it. So since that also turns on your dome lights they won't come on when the door is opened. This isn't what I classify as a fix.

    I know how to fix a ford ! Buy a chevy!! Lol i actually found a much more safer alternative theres a video but if you ground off the door switch wire it will come off instead of breaking and destroying your vehicle even if it is only a door sensor
