Few might know how back in the 1960s dealers could hardly find buyers for these cars. When I was about 14, back in the late 1960s, I went with my father to a Dodge dealer. The dealer had a similar lightweight 67 in his lot, not yet sold and with the street hemi, and was trying to get rid of it. My father liked the reduced price, under $2000 if I remember correct. I thought the car was so cool, and it seemed special with the battery in the trunk and huge air cleaner. My father started to get serious until he learned that it had a much shorter warranty than other new Dodge's. So my father passed on it. But he did wrangle a deal on a new 67 Dart GT for my aunt, which had the full factory warranty. Dad was a race marshall, so he could take me out on the track and wound out the 273 in the Dart. That was fun, but I still would have preferred the hemi.

If they sold well then, they wouldn't be expensive now.
I must say that I hate that the wealthy speculate in muscle cars, where once they turned their stuck up toffee noses up at them and us.

Beautiful. I have the same car with a 500" max wedge, 4 speed & dana with 4.10s... Goodyear bias rubber all around n steelies with caps. It's a show car that I also don't drive much. Delete of everything & Magestic Red, just like this. The history in these cars is incredible.

Gorgeous 1964 Dodge Hemi. Thanks for showing it to us. Dad bought a "run on the line 64 Dodge with a slant 6, three on the tree from Mac Tracy's Dodge dealership in Somerville, NB. (up the hill from the Hartland Covered Bridge) It would go like the wind and had lots of miles on it when dad traded it. I loved that car.

Chevrolet missed the boat in 64. They should have built 427 Malibu's with lightweight body parts. The Thunderbolts, and Hemi cars are still competitive in NHRA SS. Amazing.

One thing you did not mention on normal push button cars they go reverse, neutral, drive, second, first but on the race cars they go reverse, neutral, first, second, drive that way the driver would not hit neutral by accident when racing but you have hit on many of the facts and it's such a bad ass car and rare.

All of that coolness and you don't even freaking start it. I had a friend in 1985 who owned one of those cars. And I helped him work on it and I don't recall some of the things you said as being true. I know for a fact the Hemi didn't come with chrome valve covers. I don't believe the doors were aluminum. My friend showed me the thin bumper and the aluminum fenders and Hood. All the interior delete and no back seat. His car did 10.2 in the quarter mile. From the factory. And could light the tires up at 60 miles an hour in drive

I saw one of these a couple years ago at the Mopar Nationals in Columbus Ohio really cool cars. by the way what did these cars run in the quarter back in the day? Could they get 11's. I have a 64 polara 500 with Max wedge clone in it. 727 reverse valve body console bucket seats battery in the back 3-in exhaust disc brakes front, engine built to stock specifications a&a manifold a&a transmission work PPI headers.. wait I sound like this guy only I don't want to sell mine.

Nice, funny to have the tach set at 4500. You should bring it to the track and make few passes just to see the performance in more or less 'stock' condition. Didnt they say no warranty, etc. with those?

You could buy these cars back then. But at $2K (up to $30K in today's Venezuel, er I mean, US dollars) and with no warranty or 90 days at most, they were just a little more risk than most average car buyers of the time were willing to take!

Gorgeous car but does it actually start and run. Nice piece of history but looks to be a trailer queen. Too bad Jay Leno doesn’t own it we would’ve got to see it run on the road and hear that engine with headers wide open. What was with that magnet test? I really don’t care if someone is trying to falsify the fact that it might actually have steel fenders and doors. Is this car for sale? That exhaust from headers back was so they could get the car from the assembly plant to the car transport, sounds a little ridiculous. We’re these sold as streets legal cars or for race only? No outside mirrors and no heater or defroster I’m guessing for track only. Looks really good but it may as well had a slant six in it. Where was the hood?
