- How to disassemble Toyota Hilux / Vigo rear brake, bearing and axle assembly
Likely the same for other Toyotas with drum brakes such as the Hiace / Surf
If you are buying bearings or a shaft be aware the shaft changes and therefor so do the bearings after 7/2008, check and be sure to buy the correct parts
This is for Non-ABS if you have ABS you will need to fit the ring and a second collar after the fitment of the bearing, collar and circlip, the measurement depth you install the collar and ring is important and should be measured on disassembly to ensure it goes back in the same place (122.2 mm from the face of the wheel mounting hub to the top of the second collar)
Straightforward job with minimal tools, the press is not 100% necessary if you can cut the collar above the bearing off (grind a flat on the collar and split with a chisel).
Reassembly is the reverse of the disassembly, most bearing kits will come with seals for the backing plate and the axle lip seal, I have now a follow up video for the reassembly since my new axle shaft has arrived to replace this one.
• Toyota Hilux rear axle...
I have put together a tool to press the assembly apart in a small press in this video, I suggest buying the tool available on eBay over making it yourself but I did include the measurements at the end if you are like me and need the tool same day.
I hope this video can help you out
Thanks for watching!
Good old ozzy no nonsense video. Well done.
So a hydralic press is a basic tool 😂
Yeah LOL, fair comment, the press is a bit of a luxury. you can cut the collar off with a grinder and chisel without the press and knock the bearing off the axle, but the use of the press is best if you have access to one. 👍
Mate nothing get to about the bearing tool. Thinking outside the box 👌
I love Australians. Thanks for ya help
Hola tengo el problema con ese reten ya 3 Veces lo han avierto puse todo nuevo original y sigue la fuga ahora me dicen q compre un eje nuevo
The leaks tend to come from the seal installation depth or the collar installation depth.
If it's non-abs the seal needs to be installed flush with the housing face and the collar sits against the bearing,
if it's an abs type it very important the collar for the seal is installed to the correct depth on the axle (122.2mm from the wheel mounting face)
Also, sometimes, if the old collar has been cut off the axle and a cut mark has been made on the axle journal the oil can travel under the collar and leak, usually a new axle or lots of loctite under the collar is required
Great video, thanks
Where did you buy the tools?
Hi, I work at the Caterpillar dealership so all the Cat / snap on gear I get from the dealership (the public can also buy from Cat dealers) but honestly everything I use in these videos can be bought from a tool shop, auto shop and bunnings (ryobi stuff especially) it's all generic auto tools for my DIY jobs.
