That's a good question. I wonder if it is also a matter of the general atmosphere of the times. Perhaps people had more patience in that era, or maybe more faith. Our internet saturated information age has weakened us.

I grew up in the generation that was on the cusp of it.I remember: record players, 8 tracks, AM & shortwave radio, rotary telephones, payphones, cursive writing, going to the library to research things for school, passing "notes" in class, and actually having to put in the time and hone up the skills to procure going out on a date face to face. Grew up old school. We didn't have A/C in my house until I was 16. Same with "cable" t.v. Rabbit ears all the way! Why do I say that? Because in my own life the simplicity of a meager early life strengthened me.in Junior High there there was dial up. Didn't effect me much though. Never had a computer in the home nor did the kids in my lower middle class neighborhood. It is truly the devils playground now in regards to this "information age". For many younger folks it is folly at there finger tips. Or a way to waste alot of time by becoming very narcissistic and projecting a false personna or your whole day on social media. I use it for research and to watch enlightening youtube videos like this. Just a tool. Performers of God like these Men I think came up in an atmosphere where they operated in social norms which helped to Foster their God given talents. Was everything in those days right? Heavens no, I don't think I need to cover the unwarranted injustices that these men went through, as I am sure you are old enough to know. But I think In those times through life's trials folk were more inclined to turn to there community and church for help. Also, families were largely intact then, which nurtured strong and vibrant men & women. I see from other comments this clip is from 66. In 64 is when the Supreme Court removed prayer from public schools and started instituting the Massive Welfare State and War on the Nuclear Family that we see today. All good points you raised. Ellis was actually lower and louder than Jimmy Jones. Jimmy was heavier, and smoother in the bass range.
For a bass singer he had a very smooth voice. He reminds me of Carl Davis that replaced James Walker of the Hummingbirds
