Oman doesn't allow tall skyscrapers in Muscat, so that can be used to differentiate it from Dubai or Doha as well. Also some of the coverage in Salalah is insane, there's coconut palm spam that would make you think Mombassa or Sri Lanka.
This is great!!! My wife and I went to Oman 2 yrs ago, mostly to the mountains in the north and we hiked the highest peak in Arabian Peninsula - Jabal Shams, 3009m. We loved it.
The highest peak in the Arabian Peninsula is Mount Al-Nabi Shu'ayb in Yemen As for Jebel Shams in Oman, its height is similar to the height of Jabal Farwa in Saudi Arabia

The island is actually occupied by the uae army since the beginning of the war vs saudi arabia This is a very beautiful island with crazy endemic trees tho.
I realized that the coverage is much better than the overview map indicates, for example in Salalah (south west) almost every road seems to have coverage, but on the map only a very small portion is indicated. I've been to Oman ones, brings back great memories.
Yellow plates they are called private plates, if you own a car for personal use then you get yellow. Red for commercial. Green are for test, and they are temporary, if get a new car and you haven't applied for a plate number yet, then you get green. There is white as well, they are official plates used by government and diplomatic entities. Police they get their own plates, same for military. Plus we have plates of different colors, the Omani flags colors, they are used by the royal court.
after clicking around in mapmaker for a bit, and then playing a couple different oman maps already published, i definitely have found some rural but very distinct looking areas. there are tons of places with unique soil colors, shrubbery, mountain peaks, hazes, etc. i was able to get some pretty nuts NM guesses with some buddies after about an hour of total mapmaker+practice.
I was waiting for Oman and I am glad it finally dropped, but I was really hoping for some wet season coverage on the coast next to Yemeni border :c Some mountains and cliffs there are very beautiful with cool roads, especially west of Dhalkut. It would definitely be an interesting addition, pretty out of place for those who don't know, but I am staying hopeful that they will still add more to fill the gaps and remove the car a bit more... But still overall a good addition to Google maps and Geoguessr!
UAE resident here. Yeah some areas in UAE are full of Omani car plates. So it’s 100% Hanna confuse you all. Maybe the roads and signs are different. Knowing areas would be ideal
South of Oman, Dhofar/Salalah, is green and foggy during June to August. Pictures of roads won't be clear if they drive during the monsoon. Also it's a tourist attraction at that time and so the roads have heavy traffic. Yellow car plates have been there forever, not new. Length depends on the car, or owner preference, but I think there are only 2 lengths. Oman is not very flat, the area between north and south is. No, it's not polluted, probably just the dust as the truck drives at a little sand roads. Oman has a different energy compared to Dubai. Calmer and more variety in the landscapes.
This is so cool to see! I’ve flown to Dubai a few times on connecting flights from Mumbai, and it’s been so cool watching the Oman East mountains from the window when you first reach the peninsula! And then it fades into the desert towards Dubai! So excited to see official coverage of it now :)
As someone born & raised in UAE, I'm extremely excited to see our neighbours being added! I've only been to the Madha exclave of Oman next to Khorfakkan, yet to go to either the mainland or Musandam up North. So far some parts of mainland Oman do look like the UAE, but it's easy to tell both apart, however Musandam can get tricky, but the Yellow plates should help cuz despite the fact that I see many Omani plates regularly here in the UAE, they aren't that many compared to UAE plates on the road, so it's easy to distinguish.
definitely a lot to see/learn in terms of the road sides, plates, and different landscapes! it almost reminds me of parts of israel, which is quite interesting. exciting stuff
Something I noticed about the car as you previewed the super desert areas: there's a black hose traveling from the back of the bed to the front wrapping around the left side. Depending on where you are as you've jumped from region to region, the hose moves position. Wonder if that'll be used for solid region guessing.
Thoughts on if China ever gets added to geoguesser? Imagine the vastness of the country with diverse landscapes and climates. I know thats very unlikely due to the whole Google situation in China. But what if maybe geoguessr can collab and get data from baidu streetview?
I doubt it. Tech is a core part of the geopolitical rivalry between China and the US, so I can't see big tech firms from both countries collaborating so publicly like that.
The strangest area you will visit in Oman is Dhofar Governorate, which is the only one that has forests, 360 springs and waterfalls. During the monsoon season, Dhofar turns into Switzerland and becomes completely green, and light rain falls continuously. I forgot to tell you to check out the waterfalls in Salalah in Dhofar Governorate.
the south is super green in the monsoon season and the Sarb season after it. in the Masoon it is not suitable because the area is full of tourists and very foggy so probably the best season is sarb season
Some helpful tips which I gathered while living there: Most license plates would be red (commercial) or yellow (private) A speed cam in the middle of main roads every few kms. A lot of speed bumps on regional roads / in residential areas Camels on the roads especially in the Salalah region (check Wadi darbat coverage once released, sooo many camels) Men will wear a Kumar head rather than ghutra (Qatar/UAE) Lots of coffee shops (honk for Karak). Francincense trees in the Dhofar region near Yemen / Salalah, this area is also greener than others Jebel al Akhdar pretty iconic flora Beautiful scenery, can't wait for all coverage to be relieved.
Really good first impression of the coverage. Fingers crossed they will blur out the Google car eventually though. The mountainous areas are very cool and beautiful indeed, but I think the flat deserty nothingness in the middle of nowere is super cool and interesting as well. Maby it's because it's so different from what I'm used to growing up in Sweden and living in the UK.
Hey Omani here, Google just launched the street view in Oman , its exciting to us , the first thing i did was look up our old house and the grannys next door were outside as usuall haha, we saw our friends doing their daily walks and everyone is just suprised what is this truck doing on our town on this small road with its big camera on the back..we got a laugh out of it.
