    First thing out of Gaines' mouth is his gratitude for his artists and writers! Gaines always showed his gratitude toward his staff, because he knew it was them, not him, that made things such a success. A real class act. RIP, Bill!

    The EC Comics are thrilling and absolutely timeless! I'm 24 and my cherished EC reprints (discovered at a Goodwill store about six years ago) are the centerpiece of my comic collection. Far from dulling the imagination and the urge to read, these comics whet the appetites and stoke the imaginations, and help foster genuine appreciation of clever writing and masterful comic art technique in the young and old alike! How anyone could deny that these books are a form of high art is beyond me!

    I was fortunate to have known William M. Gaines and some of the artists. Jack Davis and Wally Wood etc. They at times in the summers of the early 50's came to Beach Road in Massapequa NY. They would gather at Wally and Ruby Kasts house on the bay. They went fishing and drunk as lords. Great group always laughing. Ruby liked me and I got all the EC comics for free. They were lost in a move from Brooklyn to Queens in 1964. Great memories of great artists and writers and of course Mr. Gaines.

      Gabreya Bradley Absotutly! They were my introduction to unbridled laughter and joking and to a small degree fishing. The boat was overloades once, but they all came back. The Kasts house was 2 doors down from my house and the reason why Ruby got me all the EC comics, was that she was the secretary to Willie G.Those were great people and great summers on the bay.

    If Fredrick Wertham weren't dead, I'd kick his ass for forcing EC to quit the horror comics. I'm 21 and I love my reprints so much. They are unlike anything I've ever read. William Gaines, you are the master of the macabre and we miss you so much!
    RIP William!

    @MaxTallon I know, the story was called Judgement Day. Even though it was EC's last and brilliant story, the stupied ass code off comic didn't want it published because it had a black man as the main character. It was a cool story. It was like the Shock Suspense comic they ran with a scifi twist. Loved the comic, love EC. They were the best comic book publishers ever.

    I love horror and horror comics. I have a massive collection of classic horror comics, saddly i don't have any classic, old school horror comic books like Tales from the Crypt Vault of Horror Haunt of Fear Crime SuspenStories Shock SuspenStories, they were sooooo cool. EC started the horror comic book and it inspired a massive waze of new horror comics, if you couldn't see horror the movies, open your comic books, and read them. Thank you, Mr. Gaines.

    @Tabish29 They sell them in hardback book format at our comicbook shop
    (Austin Books) complete volumes of Tales From The Crypt, The Vault Of Horror, The Haunt Of Fear, plus the EC science fiction and war comics. You can probably find them on several comicshop mail order sights like Milehighcomicsdotcom Jimhanley'suniversedotcom and even amazon and e-bay.
    I believe the retail price per volume is $49.99 (or around that price) but you should be able to find discounts on line.

    True, although interestingly enough the first comics with horror elements in them were I believe the Classic Comics illustrated adaptations of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde & Frankenstein from the early to mid 1940's.
    Some of the early superhero comics like Captain America issues 1-10 (1940-1941) had things like Captain America fighting witches and hell hounds and other monsters moreso than him fighting Nazi's and Adolf Hitler even.

    IDW is reprinting horror stories from publishers other than EC, crediting each story's source and artist. I'm talking about their 'Haunted Horror' series. As good as they are though the art and stories in the ECs is far superior to everything else. Still, I appluad IDW for their efforts. Especially as so many of the source comics go for $1000 apiece or more.
    STAY AWESOME! :)

    Hey, it's me again and i just want to get something off my dead, zombie chest. EC comics ruled the comic book rules in the 1940's and 1950's, until idiotic parents and religious figures led a boycott and a "Witchhunt" on EC. Things like Seduction of the Innocent and all those meetings, nearly destroying the horror comics. If you ask me, all those people had their heads up their asses. RIP Mr. Gaines, we miss you.

    Has anyone ever dealt with the fallout between Gaines and Wood? I'm sure he tried hard and long to get Wood to return to mad.

    • @sha11235
      @sha11235 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I know, Wood left Mad in 1964 because he was getting burned out. He was also fighting a migraine at the time that he would try to appease by taking pills and alcohol so he could make the deadlines. He went to comic books and worked there. He did come back in 1970 and did two articles for Mad, one of which didn't see print. He then suffered a series of strokes and kidney failure and it robbed him of being able to draw, so in 1981 he killed himself by shooting himself. Not sure if it was a falling out between him and Gaines in the way it would be with Don Martin in the 80's.
