    Vera Cruz is one of my favorite movies, the forerunner of the Spaghetti Western!

    Cooper was one of those rare actors who could be vulnerable and stalwart at the same time.
    Interesting background on Friendly Persuasion. It's one of my favorite Gary Cooper movies. I guess the professional in him did not allow him to slouch even though he may not have liked what he was doing.

    I have seen every Gary Cooper western except for the 1930 version of The Spoilers and the Lost Arizona Bound, so this video is right up my alley. What do I are the best 1950!s Cooper westerns? In no particular order: Distant Drums, Garden of Evil, Man of The West, The Hanging Tree, Dallas, High Noon and my personal favorite: Vera Cruz.

    Some good films here, some very unsung. I particularly like Garden of Evil and They Came To Cordura.

      Richard Widmark did some great westerns, but Garden Of Evil was number one ( followed closely by Yellow Sky).

      @@davidbrown386 Yellow Sky is outstanding. There's also Backlash, The Last Wagon, The Law and Jake Wade, Warlock, Two Rode Together, and others. Widmark did plenty of Westerns, some great, some not.

      Alvarez Kelly was another excellent Widmark western: He was a rare actor who excelled at playing heroes or villains equally well.

      @@davidbrown386 True. He had excellent range as an actor, but maybe just a bit better as a bad guy.

      I would agree. Widmark as Tommy Udo in Kiss Of Death is an all time villain, and the role I most identify him with.

    Man of The West is a great film

    • @davidbrown386
      @davidbrown386 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Man Of The West was supposed to be filmed @ Universal with James Stewart. But he and Director Anthony Mann had a falling out and Mann walked off of Night Passage, so the film ended up at United Artists and Cooper got the role. Cooper was perfect in his last great western ( They Came To Cordura was only very good).

    It’s a shame that he and John Wayne didn’t make a film together

      If you look at Cooper’s westerns you will find he did not work with many who are identified with Westerns. 1: Richard Widmark. 2: Burt Lancaster. 3: Barbara Stanwyck. 4: Ward Bond. Others who did great westerns: Charles Bronson, Ernest Borgnine, Karl Malden, Jean Arthur.

    Cooper made some great westerns but died when he was about 60 and missed the 1960s when westerns became more gritty. Nevertheless he still remains the ultimate western hero along with Clint Eastwood. Henry Fonda next.

    The best of my generation. Seen some & not seen some of the movies but Coop was Coop. He even overshadowed other Western heros. Feel sorry for the newgen who watch rubbish of longhaired, the unkempt boisterous bumblers posing as westerners

    It's funny that he didn't like his performance in Friendly Persuasion. I think it was his second best after Pride of the Yankees. I know that will shock High Noon fans but that film always struck me as being written from the ending backwards as everything is being forced to make sure his showdown happens without regard to logic. So a strong performance ruined by a staged script.

    • @davidbrown386
      @davidbrown386 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Friendly Persuasion is to me on the bottom of Cooper westerns. Why? With the exception of Comedy films like Ball of Fire, Cooper works best as an action hero. Obviously his westerns but Souls At Sea, Beau Geste, The General Died At Dawn, Sgt. York snd the criminally neglected The Real Glory. Here he is miscast ( like in Love In The Afternoon and One Sunday Afternoon ( two of the four Cooper films I disliked)).
