Realizing upgrades in Scythe are, on average, in the bottom 2 of possible stars was a big level up moment for me. It takes 6 turns to do while the others will usually take only 4. As stated in the video, Scythe is about focusing on a small number of things towards your route to victory, and not generalizing too much. Very often the last 2 or 3 upgrades will be on things you aren't focusing on this game and come up very little to not at all. A mech will always provide an ability, increased mobility, and combat potential. An enlist will always generate an immediate 1 time benefit and passive ongoing benefits. It takes a particular kind of game to consider going for an upgrade star, rather than just 1 or 2 upgrades to compliment your strategy.

Advice I often give to friends playing Scythe (my favorite game!): #1 have fun! For new players, it's vital to figure out how everything works, and exploring / learning that may not lead to a win against experienced players, but it is likely to get you familiar enough with the game that you are more equipped to win next time. #2 (also for new players) don't get too sucked into combat. It is valuable and necessary for some things, but be sure to know what you're actually getting out of it, and make it an intentional choice that will lead towards your scoring goals, not just "I want to win some fights". #3 For experienced players, decide whether you are playing a fast game or a slow one, depending on your faction + mat combo. Many combos will want to race to six stars as quickly as possible while controlling the most territory by the end. Others may be more suited to countering that by focusing on points & popularity early, so that the racing player(s) will not want to end the game as soon as they can because if they did, they would not have the most points.

"Have fun" is great advice for any gaming! :)

Great strategies! I especially agree with the Tapestry one about focusing on the tracks that are different than your opponents. I’ve found the most success when I pair the tech and science tracks, using science to progress further on tech and stockpiling those tech cards

Really great tips!! For Scythe one tip I didn’t hear mentioned here but really enjoy is to get the +1 movement mech upgrade and then position a mech or two on tunnels. That provides some excellent board coverage and pressure to prevent players from spreading thin. The great thing about Scythe is the threat of combat is far more impactful than actual combat a lot of the time :)

Scythe is my favorite game of all time. These are great tips but even just watching ONE video from someone like FOMOF can show you the real depth of strategy in this game (again, I know this was just a general strategy tip video). I mention this because Scythe is perhaps the best game that rewards the player for even razor thin efficiency with the combination of faction, boards and main board state with combat existing to prevent it from being an almost solvable puzzle. It's brilliant and while it has so much in expansion content : my selfish side wishes and hopes there is more to come at some point. I know Jamey that you said Scythe is complete but I hope there might be a change of mind sometime. A guy can dream! Thanks for designing this game :)

For Wingspan (base game especially) I think people sleep on “white” birds where you get the benefit on-play. Especially ones that give you food like the Goldfinch and Brown Pelican. Can be so useful early game to pad your food supply. Not as big a fan of lay-egg white cards unless it perfectly matches the nest-type I have a goal card or end or round goal for.

For Rolling Realms: I agree about the resources. Don’t be afraid to spend them early and often. Every once in a while it benefits you to hold on to some resources, but more often then not you benefit more from spending them than sitting on them. It is almost always beneficial to get a 3rd die to use as most realms take 9 or 10 dice to have a shot at completing them.
For Viticulture: Get victory points from any and everywhere you can. You must be flexible with your long term strategy because the cards don’t always align with what you planned on earlier or before the game. If you are flexible and ‘go where the cards take you’ typically you can pick up a good chunk of points from small things. I’ve played several games where I either won or was very close to winning while completing 0 or 1 wine order for the entire game because I picked up points elsewhere. Most players chase the wine making/filling orders strategy which means those spaces are filled on the board. With that being the case the spaces you need to other things are typically open and you can often times throw others players games completely off just by taking 1 space they need.
For Red Rising: Don’t focus too much on the end game scoring early. Instead focus on the powers of the cards. Especially ones that can give you extra cards. As the game progresses you can start to focus on your end game goals and what goes well together, but if you focus on the end game scoring too early you severely limit your choices throughout the game and reduce your flexibility. You can try to bait other players into taking cards that might not benefit them and/or stop them from taking what they really need just by your decision on where you play your card. If you can gain cards and get the gaining power out of the game so others can’t gain it as well you should do so.

In Wingspan (green side of score mat) even while total number of points increases for later rounds, distribution stays the same: 2nd place gets 3 points less and 3rd place gets 4 points less than 1st. So here is a tip: if you see that you can easily get 1st place in later rounds - focus more on them and don't try to be the best in *every* round. But don't forget that 4th place gets 0 points!

    For Scythe:
Go to a territory where you can Produce resources that the bottom row action of the Trade requires.
Depends on the goals and the wind gambit abilities, always push 5 workers early on.
    Don't push upgrades too far.
Always get the Enlist unlocked for the free battle cards. Battle cards are limited and most of the other factions like Crimea or Rusviet gain their battle cards rapidly. Early-mid is a no combat phase so battle carda will gradually deplete so unlocking that first Enlist action is a must.
Go combat for your points not to sabotage players. Scythe is a pseudo war game and a semi-solitaire game. Make your actions efficient for your self. A loss of others is not your gain.
If your goal restricts you to move or use resources for it to complete, ignore it.
Build Monument asap. I play with no mines. I prioritize the Mill and the Monument. Bolstering with a popularity will come in handy specially attacking areas with workers.
Upgrade your movement first then Bolster. Don't bother upgrading your production because you'll be building Mill first.
Don't rush encounters. Move according what you need. Use move only if you want to produce a certain resource or if you want to trigger its bottom row action.
Your adjacent resource is your strenghts and weakness. Your bottom row action on Produce and Trade will be your strengths. If these match, then try to find a way to Enlist as early as possible.
Lastly, have fun and you don't need to be the first to enjoy the game. We always play in 7 player game and we always rank each other. 1st player always win landslide or sometimes a point difference.
Scythe is my favorite game then Tapestry amd Wingspan.
PS: I am hoping for a Scythe expansion. ;) ;) New factions, new player mats and probably new top/bottom row actions? Looking at you!

Euphoria: I'm going to add a tip to your tip. It's true you don't have to take all of your dice back when you retrieve. But, if you've left one dice on the board that is bumpable, it may come back to you anyway. The flip side of this caveat is that you might be able to get an opponent to lose a worker by bumping their dice if they have dice in front of them from a high roll.
Scythe: The Factory, Encounters, and Objectives are all great and I've had many games where I pursue these. But they can also be a trap. They aren't an every game strategy, you have to evaluate whether they are efficient to achieve; each game, that calculation is different. Also Scythe: It can be easy to forget that coins are points. Find the bottom row action that gives you the most coins, and make taking that action part of your overall strategy.
Rolling Realms: The single most efficient thing you can do in this game is create a "1" die with a single coin. There are several realms where 1s are valuable, like the Society, Pendulum, Euphoria, Between Two Cities. Try to create coins early so that you can get an almost free dice for realms where 1s work well.

Any tips for new people jumping into Charterstone that haven't played it before? I struggle to come up with a good one without spoiling anything.

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Bumping is important in Charterstone, just like Euphoria. Also, similar to Wingspan, I think it helps in Charterstone to pursue the goals that progress each session.
Great video on tribal councils today!

Wingspan: get the birds that offer extra bonus cards. If you have 6 or 8 bonus cards, even if you only complete half of them, your end game bonus will eclipse anyone who just had their single starting bonus card. It’s actually sometimes an issue if someone gets lucky on drawing. There needs to be more ways to acquire bonus cards, and more bonus cards themselves. Maybe, sacrifice a cube (skip a turn) to draw two bonus cards and keep one? Or add an extra die to the feeder that gives a non-food reward like eggs or bonus cards.

In Wingspan, don’t get too focused on your end of game goal at the expense of other sources of points. My wife will never play a bird less than 4 feathers. I think that’s a bit too extreme but playing a 2 feather bird just because it fits your goal isn’t a good use of resources!
