I remember reading an interview with Larry Linville about how he created the character of Frank. He said he gathered all the lousy traits he could think of from people he had known and put ALL of them into the character of Frank Burns. Wonderful character building. And it takes guts to play the annoying and hated character.
I am sorry to see that David Ogden Stiers was not mentioned. He was outstanding in the show and portrayed very well a character so different from himself.
I loved the character development of Charles Emerson Winchester. At first he was a pompous ass but became "one of the guys" even playing practical jokes. I hope that David Ogden Stiers had a blast portraying Winchester.
As much as I disliked the character David depicted, I certainly admired his performances. We were meant to "dislike" David's character, and thus his addition to the series was a successful casting!
I studided mr stiers and he was a good actor i was shocked to find out he was gay i would have never expected that but he really dud a good job after frank left the show he was a great fit
The first three or four seasons of MASH with the original cast were my favorites. I loved Larry Linville's role. He was a classic jerk playing against Alda's role. I had read some time ago that one of the reasons that Rogers left was that when he was hired he was told that he and Alda had equal billing. As the show progressed he realized that he played second fiddle to Alda.

For me it was John Patrick Francis Mulcahy . In the " heavier episodes, he had lines, that he delivered so well,that you couldn't believe it was Fr. Mulcahy delivering the line. I also had a Chaplain in the military that helped me get through difficult times. When I received my Honorable Discharge, I went to school to Chaplaincy School, so I could helpothers in difficult situations. William Christopher portrayed a Chaplain very well ..
when I was in my doctoral program, we had to introduce ourselves the first day. One man, Father Frank Toste said he was Bill Christopher' advisor and told us funny stories from behind the scenes. Farnk said his dad visited the set and told everyone that Harry Morgan was a great actor. Harry replied, " You better listen to Father Toste's father!
I remember HARRY MORGAN from the very early days of tv like SEPTEMBER BRIDE and DRAGNET. He also played GLENN MILLER's piano player CHUMMY MCGREGOR in the GLENN MILLER STORY. He IS a great actor and lots of experience.

One of the many ways in which the TV series watered down the great movie version by Robert Altman was making the chaplain a character taken seriously by the other characters. In the movie, Mulcahy was a useless boob. Considering how cynical everyone was at this frontline hospital, it was not surprising that the well-educated doctors would dismiss the religious nut. But TV inevitably seeks the lowest common denominator, so no denigrating superstition! Also, Trapper John was supposed to be an equal to Hawkeye, the two best surgeons at this MASH unit. Alda started to take over the show fairly early on in its long run, so Wayne left, Larry left, Gary left. Trapper’s replacement was a teetotaling christian wimp, Henry with an old-school asshat & Gary with the ridiculous Klinger. The first year of the series was the best year, when there was some commitment to both the great movie & the very funny original novel.
A few years ago I wrote to the cast of M*A*S*H and requested autographs for my fiancee! Wayne Rogers was the first to respond in 2015 with an autographed photo addressed personally to her! Little did we know that at the time he was terminally ill and sadly passed away later that year! Mike Farrell also sent a personalized autographed photo to her as well! Alan Alda responded two years later after I sent 3 separate letters! Gary Burgoff I wasn't so lucky on! All the letters I sent came back stamped "Return To Sender" Sadly David Ogden Stires passed away before he could respond! But the three she received are ones she treasures with all her heart! It was so kind of them to take time out of their busy schedules to answer! Especially Wayne Rogers being that he was so ill! But from what we've heard, he made his last couple years a goal to answer as much fan mail as he could!
I' m not surprised . Wayne Rogers and McLean Stevenson were the best actors on the program (I also liked the guy playing Col. Flagg !) . After Rogers and Stevenson left, it became the Alan Alda Show , complete with increasingly liberal political themes . The movie was a masterpiece ...in a league far above the program . The movie's casting was perfect !
Liberal, was it? I thought the creation, and the development of Houlihan -- how she was regarded and treated by the other, ostensibly much hipper, characters was debasing.I hated that aspect of the movie.
I'd assume that most popular celebs would have a staff to take care of those things. IN the old Hollywood days, the studio did that service. I doubt that the stars even saw your request except maybe a very few like Wayne.
If you think Wayne Rogers came back to do guest spots in MASH and that he played the part of Trapper John in the spin off then how can we trust you are right when you say Gary didn't like Alan?
AMEN. I've figured-out that HE knows the truth, as it is readily available (makes awful mistakes on other shows/stars). He is doing this to garner input, and to keep his reviews alive. Pernell Roberts did TJMD for 8 years, ya gotta be a total moron to miss that. Beyond this, Gary did several reunion shows w Alan, even joking w him. CRAP piece.

Gary was self-absorbed. I met him several times. He dated the wrong women, over estimated his value, and walked with a chip on his shoulder. Alda was not his problem. He was his own problem.
Col. Potter - the father figure, Klinger - the guy who would give you the shirt off his back, Burns - the guy you loved to hate, and Winchester - the stuffed shirt that would occasionally show his human side. These were my favorites. Great supporting cast. Even Margaret had an arc where you got to see her change/grow from the start to the end of the show. Great casting all around.
Absolutely loved every episode and every character! M*A*S*H* is just perfect! I still remember feeling choked up when they announced the death of Col. Blake (Which apparently was kept from the rest of the cast until filming to get a proper shocked reaction from everyone) and the final episode? Well that was a magnificent ending to the greatest series of all time (By the way, I got choked up watching that as well!)
I can still recall that feeling when we lost Henry and Trapper at the end of season three. How many shows could've survived the loss of its two favourite characters ? But somehow Mash did, and that final episode was another gut-wrenching goodbye to characters and a show that is still greatly loved.
I found the first 3 series of MASH superb. But when Trapper and Henry left it went downhill. The utterly appalling BJ Hunnicutt played by Mike Farrell was the worst. He was absolute saccharin PC garbage. And Jamie Farr playing the one joke cross-dressing Klinger, used repeatedly later in the series as they ran out of ideas. Hawkeye, Trapper, Hotlips, Frank, Henry and Radar. They were brilliant early on in the early series. Possibly with the wonderful Frank Burns almost stealing the show. And the wisecracking dialogue between Hawkeye and Trapper. My most memorable line was when Henry had had a brief fling and felt guilty about it. He confessed it in a letter to his wife and to his great delight she forgave him. He was reading her letter to Hawkeye and Trapper walking behind them in the camp. Reading from the letter his wife says, (roughly, from my memory) "Henry, I understand the pressures you're under over there, living like animals in tents ..." Hawkeye replies, " I didn't know animals lived in tents?" One of the great comedy lines to me.
It was a strong reminder that war takes great people away from us. What a tearful episode! Radar breaking the news to the staff was one of the saddest moments in TV episode history.
WHY are they so memorable? BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T ALL FOCUSED ON WHAT 'GOOD OL' HAWK' DID TO THAT SHOW: Gone were the skirt chasing Buddies & in came dry, wife 'n kids guy. Gone was the incompetent & funny Spouse cheater & the dynamic w/'Hotlips' & Cool Col Blake who'd let them get away w/the funny Buddies stuff & in came an over the hill actor wagging a finger at Hawk. What's left to laugh at?
The episode that stands out for me is the one where Colonel Blake is finally going to be sent home. We see him fly away in the helicopter and think, "Well, someone is getting his happy ending." Only to have our hearts broken when word comes during OR duty that Blake's chopper crashed and he was killed. That was just devastating.

It was during MASH, that I fell in love (non-romantically) with Larry Linville as an actor. It takes a tremendous depth of talent to portray all of those different characters that he played -- all rolled into one, as Frank Burns! Very impressive acting!!
He WAS a good actor, with an unbelievable range. He impressed me when I saw him in another role in which he sounded and even looked entirely different. I realize that's what actors do, but man, he was really good at it.
@@DropdudeJohn You are right. Before Harry Morgan landed the role of everyone's beloved colonel he had a guest appearance as the truly bonkers General Steel. I have no idea if one role led to the other, but it's a fun bit of trivia.
I think Charles was the only character that was allowed to grow. The rest were stuck in a groove. Underneath he had heart, warmth, under that Boston facade.
Yes,there were several scenes where Charles was portrayed as a thoughtful,decent guy. The Christmas episode where he bought the orphans candy was one. It was recently shown on ME TV.
Looking back on the show ... the Frank Burns character was so awesome ! I loved hating that guy ... and then sometimes would even feel sorry for him . Quite a talented actor - RIP Larry Linville
You are so right. After Larry left the show wasn’t the same. Come to think of it Larry and/or Loretta Swit were indispensable characters. You could never lose them both and one was bad enough.

Larry Linville was the best actor on that show by far. He always portrayed the bumbling idiot and Alan Alda and his cohorts were always the neverending hero's. Few(if any) actors could have pulled off the character of Frank Burns as well as Linville did. He was never really given the proper credit he deserved for making that show the huge success it was
Disagree. Linville was the best actor on set until Morgan came in as Colonel Potter. Morgan set his own standard, later remarked by Jamie Farr, who considered him his acting mentor. Sofar I didn't read about a castmember choosing Linville as mentor.
It's my understanding that, aside from Gary Burghoff, Larry Linville was the only actor who left the show that didn't regret it. (The truth might be much murkier than this, but…) He'd taken Frank as far as he could go and knew it was time to move on.
I didn’t know Gary disliked Alan Alda. My favorite Characters were Trapper John and Colonel Henry Blake. The Entire Cast were gifted Actors! I interviewed for Radar’s Part and obviously didn’t get it. I was Drafted into the army shortly thereafter. I became Radar’s character in real life…I was a Company Clerk! 😂God has a sense of humor!
Usually, the funny guy is easy to like but I had a problem with ALAN, he probably was a really nice guy in real life but I started to have different thoughts about that. Something about him!
@@ShannonFreng there are so many! The Captain,Lieutenant, and First Sergeant depend on the Company Clerk to know things they don’t like all the Army Regulations. I’m a type A and like to do everything well. That gave me an advantage about not doing things I didn’t want to do. In time…they cut me a lot of slack. An example, the day I arrived I was fresh out of training, and 3 Lieutenants we’re fighting to get me because Company Clerks were hard to come by. I immediately recognized I was a commodity, so when I walked in to meet the Captain, he was overjoyed to meet me and shook my hand and thanked me for coming!!! Lol like I had a choice…so I said “Sir, don’t thank me, Promote me!” He turned to the Sergeant and ordered him to type up my promotion papers. He told me he could take it away as fast as he gave it, and I told him “Sir, I won’t let you down.” So now I’m an E-3 in rank. Private First Class. Now there’s an Army regulation that you cannot be promoted to E-4 until you’ve been in the Army for 365 days. So, on my 366th day, I typed up my Promotion and put In between a bunch of other paperwork the Captain had to sign. Well…I heard him yell my last name and to report to him immediately! He said, “what the hell us this Murphy? You think you deserve a promotion?” I’m standing at attention and said, “Sir Yes Sir!” He shook his head and said laughing…oh all right and signed it! 😁
That just shows what great actors Alan Alda and Gary Burgough are. I don't know that many viewers, including myself, would have guessed they didn't get along. For them to make their characters look like they have good chemistry when they themselves didn't is an amazing talent.
Larry Linville was one of my favorite characters. I hated to see him leave, but David Ogden Stiers done a magnificent job of filling that void. The casting for M*A*S*H was incredible!
Larry was the best. I think the funniest line from the whole series comes from him. When Margaret makes Hawkeye throw him a surprise party and she says to him "Frank they love you" He replies "It was their hatred that fooled me" Sheer genius line!
For a show to last eleven seasons shows that it has the rare gift of resonating with viewers, even with significant cast changes throughout. The ensemble cast was able to collaborate even if personal differences existed, and there was enough variety in the storylines to hold the viewers' interest. The show was still on top when it ended in the two-hour finale.
As a WW2 & Korean War veteran, my paternal grandfather loved M*A*S*H* & was greatly dismayed when it was cancelled. I upset him when I told him, as a teenager, that I couldn't care less about whether it went or stayed on the air, but what do kids know? How I wish that Grandpa was still around these days to ask questions about his 23 years of military service! He rarely spoke about that time in his life, but he must have found much that was similar to that time in M*A*S*H*.
Actually met Larry. He came to speak at our college. Nothing like the Burns character- as pleasant and charming as can be. Can’t say the same for some of the students in the audience

I've read more than once that Larry Linville was,in fact,very well liked by his fellow cast members. So it's not surprising to learn that he was a nice guy.
Great show. Overdosed on it years ago when a stupid roommate insisted on watching the show 12 hours a day. The upside is that I now have practically the entire run of the show memorized. Not a bad deal considering it was some of the best TV writing ever done.
The two actors I think were the most memorable were McLean Stevenson and Harry Morgan. Harry did a hell of a job filling in, and added so much to the show. I still remember them drinking a salute to his former and present friends.

I just miss all of these actors. The writing and characters, with the chemistry of the people they'd chosen for us, was amazing to watch, and wait for ever week. At the end of the day, Linville said the further development of Margaret left little else for the Frank Burns character. Alda also said the character was being written as more and more mentally unstable and, after awhile, it wasn't funny anymore mocking someone "literally crazy"
Of course I became a lifelong fan of every MASH character and actor. But it was Larry's Frank and David's Charles that gave me the most laughs, esp when featured in an episode. RIP, guys.
Both actors played their characters fantastically though Charles was better utililized as the show went from a comedy with dramatic touches to a drama with comedic tones. He was still rather pompous but he had a sympathetic side to him and he knew how to dish out pranks and insults back. Charles earned a degree of respect Frank never got from Hawkeye.
It's a testament to the talent on the show that apparently Larry Linville was in reality one of the nicest people in real life, and that Radar looked up to Hawkeye as part older brother, part idol, Hawkeye looked at Radar as part little brother and part adopted stray puppy and both made you think the actors felt as close as their characters.
Radar was supposed to be a teenager, or very close to it. I never could buy into that. He looked too old. And his deformed left hand that they always had to hide added another air of unreality. But I still liked him better than Klinger. Even as a little kid, I just couldn't respect a guy who disrespected the Army so much as to wear dresses. Guess growing up with a very decorated officer daddy had something to do with that, lol.
@@s.c.7362 Gary Burghoff was 27 when they made the MASH movie, and 36 when he left the show. I never saw him as a teenager, a guy in his early 20s maybe at best. Nah Klinger didn't do it out of disrespect, he just wanted to go home. When Radar left and Klinger realised he wouldn't go home, he took over Radar's role as the very loyal clerk of the regiment.
Yeah Pernell Roberts ( Adam Cartwright on Bonanza) played Trapper John MD, Wayne Rogers later played a doctor again on House Calls which was a hit until they fired Lynn Redgrave (for breast feeding her baby on the set), Wayne also played Tony Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie 15 years later bc Larry Hagman didn't want to do it again.
In the Season 4 episode Welcome To Korea, Hawkeye learns that Trapper got his discharge papers while he (Hawkeye) was on R&R. Hawkeye along with Radar tried to catch Trapper before he left but unfortunately missed him by ten minutes.
I am a fan of M*A*S*H just like I am a fan of Alan Alda. I am a fan of all the actors of the show; they were what made the show so remarkable. I still watch the reruns on MeTV and enjoy each one of them. Brings me back to my childhood when it was "tradition" to watch it every week in my family.
We also usually watch MASH on MeTV as many days as my schedule will permit. I loved all the characters, in their good and bad, and just about all the episodes ( few notables excepted - the dream sequence one particularly). During college - MASH was on 2-3 times /day and was was frequently watched. The series closer was a real heartbreaker, and is not shown very often, compared to the others.
I remember House Calls was a hit until they fired Lynn Redgrave for breast feeding her baby on the set, I watched it even after that (they replaced her with Sharon Gless) but the ratings dropped and it was cancelled, Wayne also played Tony Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie 15 years later bc Larry Hagman didn't want to do it (he was doing Dallas and also he didn't like his time on I Dream of Jeannie).
Even if he wasn't doing Dallas everybody says he wasn't happy when he was doing I Dream of Jeannie maybe he felt Barbara Eden was the star of the show not him?, he was much happier doing Dallas bc he was definitely the star of that show.
It’s hard to choose a favorite character on Mash! Each one was unique and the actors portrayed them so perfectly. I think Radar and Klinger could be my favorites if I didn’t like Hawkeye or Winchester and so on. I liked them all so much!
My favorite character is Trapper John. I met Wayne Rogers and he was very nice funny man. I loved him in Murder She Wrote. He was a very talented man but more important a very nice human being. God Bless His Soul!
One of my all time favourite shows. I love the way Loretta Swit gradually turned Margaret from a somewhat one dimensional shrew into one of the greatest characters on the show. ❤Margaret❤
I heard years back that it was Colonel Potter that was not too fond of Radar in real life. I loved this show, one of the best ever shown on the tube. My favorite was LtCol Henry Blake played by McLean Stevenson and lost interest in watching the show when they killed him in a plane crash. I thought Larry Linville did a masterful job of playing Major Burns, the officer we loved to hate and he reminded me of way too many officers in the military. All in all, one of my top ten all time shows.
I liked Frank and Larry Linville was perfect for that role. As time went on, the writers went a little to far and made him out to be a total idiot. Then Charles came in and, after one season, became buddy buddy with everyone.

He also married one of the crew members on the show. After telling Johnny about the baby, his wife walked out and Mac held her on his lap for the rest of the interview.
@@davidpanetta6400 I really thought they were explicit that it got shot down. It's been a long time, it wouldn't be the first time my memory has failed me. Or maybe it's the Mandela effect. You know, I still remember the final episode. I was in college and went to my favorite bar (the long-gone "Improper" bar on Main Street in Kutztown); the entire bar watched it in near silence the whole time, sucking down beer and the free ring-bologna they kept at the bar. Good times...
I heard Wayne Rogers say he left mash because he didn't think the show was going to be on much longer. 4 or 5 seasons is typical for most sitcoms. Wayne also said when the show ran for as long as it did, he regretted leaving
It's hard for me to pick a favorite character because they're all very unique. Hawkeye's humor, Frank's cynicism, Radar's effectiveness, Clinger's insanity. They're all fantastic characters.
Klinger wasn't insane. That was the whole thing. He was gunning for a Section 8 but they all knew he was faking it. That's actually very cowardly and he wouldn't have ever gotten by in any real Army outfit. (I'm the daughter of an O5 and Viet Nam veteran. Needless to say, I was raised on this show, and we loved it, but it was VERY much not based on any amount of reality. That's what made it funny.)
If you ever want to see Gary Burghoff outside of Mash, check out some of his appearances on the old Match Game show. Hes about as annoying as a person could be. As for Wayne Rogers...I get his point about being a sidekick. Even at that point, Alda would get most of the dialogue and Rogers would get a line or two. Id be annoyed too
Trapper John h had the best facial expressions of anyone on the show. His looks during the ‘Liver/Fish’ scene is worth watching again and again. Classic.
I am glad so many people enjoyed the TV series. I am a HUGE fan of the movie and was spoiled by it and, while I watched the TV series on and off, I could never fully get over the differences how characters differed from the movie and felt I was being lectured to, especially by Alan Alda. Still, the success and influence of the series cannot be denied.
Just stick to Seasons 1-3. No lectures- just pure comedy. The show becomes a completely different show in Season 4-11. Seasons 1-3 are the only ones to watch
I agree! Never took to the TV show, because for me Hawkeye and Trapper were ALWAYS Donald Sutherland and Elliot Gould! And the Robert Altman film remains fabulous - as do their performances!
Mash will remain one of my favorites for its originality. It wasn't until I watched the movie that a lot of the TV series made sense--particularly Hot Lips.
@Facts Verse it has been more than a decade since I watched it. I can't think of a particular episode, but I can think of certain scenes that always made it funny. Radar is funny in how he always foresees what Hunnicutt is about to order. Of course, the episode when Hotlips gets her name. There are so many clips to remember.
Briliant show all round. A friend of mine served as a doctor in Afghanistan several times (one quarter of each year). For his birthday, I wanted to send him the complete MASH collection. But then I decided that that might not be quite proper, especially as much of what he experienced there was like the show in different ways, and not necessarily in good ways or something to laugh about at that time. I must say that I found a lot of things I experienced in the military myself in that show. The way the characters are portrayed, I must say I questioned my own attitude towards some of my officers and comrades and my service. Hawkeye may in some ways be admirable, but in others he also is a pretty holier-than-thou hypocrite and pain in the a**. In a real army, his attitude would be the straight way to Bedlam.
This is my favorite show of all time. My favorite character is Trapper, although the Frank Burns character is just one you love to hate. My dad had the good fortune to meet McLean Stevenson when he worked for Piedmont Airlines and McLean did the commercials. He said he was very cordial and willing to talk quite a bit about the show. He said in later years he wondered if leaving the show was a good thing after all. At the company picnic my dad told him I was a huge fan and he got an autograph on a paper plate for me. Dad also met Gary Burghoff at an airline party with BF Goodrich, which had a MASH theme. He said he was nice and gave him an autograph for me. My favorite episodes were Crisis, Private Charles Lamb, and The Incubator.
The Incubator has my favorite "military" joke in it. The US military (especially the Navy, but all branches) loves "portmanteau" words: words that abbreviate phrases using syllables instead of initial letters. "COMSURFLANT" for Commander, Surface Fleet, Atlantic for example. So after Hawkeye and Trapper confront a general over the Incubator and they are back at camp with Henry reading about the incident, Henry says "Did you really call a 2 star general a NINCOMPAC?" Well, I laughed...
@@evilpenguinmas Yes, that line was great. My daughter and I love when he asked if they really said give me an incubator or give me death. It resonates with me because I work with poultry and we have incubators for hatching our eggs. They are really old and frustrating, so I've often wanted to use that line to our supervisors. If they don't know the show, they wouldn't get it though.
Loved the show, it was one of a kind and the actors were fantastic, no matter who came or went, it was always admirable to see that most of the cast got along with each other.
I love M*A*S*H and have probably seen every episode from the pilot where they raffled off Lt Dish and a weekend in Tokyo to the Farewell episode. I have to say that although the entire series was a classic, my favorites were Seasons 1, 2, and 3. The following seasons could never come close to the chemistry of the original cast and my heart belonged to Trapper John from the beginning. ❤
When I was in the army,I was most like Trapper John. LOL.I hope that's a good thing,because I hated every minute,every week,month and all 7 yrs I was in the army. LOL.
The real Benjamin Hawkeye Pierce was based on real life Army surgeon H Richard Hornberger. Hornberger came to hate the show. He felt that Alan Alda trampled his memories of his time in the Korean War and that Alda took off with his own liberal values because Hooker was a strong political conservative.

For me it is impossible to pick a favorite character. They were all great! However, I loved the evolution of Margaret. The contributing events (nowhere relationship followed by a faithless marriage) could have embittered her but instead she became delightfully human!
This is very poorly researched. Wayne Rogers never came back to the show for a few episodes and he never played the character in Trapper John MD as other people have mentioned in the comments.

I loved that show, in first run and forever reruns. So many strong actors, with big characters to play. Yes, there will be friction between these strong personalities. But they made it work beautifully.

My favorite character is Col. Flagg. He was an antagonistic bully that added a comical spice to the show. IF you disagree, expect a box of scorpions on your front doorstep.
All the characters were either very good, awesome or even exceptional. Every character improves the show in some way or another, my favourites( in order) were Hawkeye, Winchester, burns, trapper, Col Potter, BJ, Radar, Father M, Clinger, and hot lips. I put Hawkeye first because he was glue that tied the shows characters together and it wouldn’t be mash without him.
I grew up watching this show. My father served in Korea and it was funny slapstick style during the first 3 seasons then became more serious. I still watch maybe 2-3 episodes every day. I only do this with 2 shows, MASH, and Original Star Trek. I guess some of the original actors might have felt in the shadows of Alda. Alda did contribute much by not only acting, but being Writer, Director, and Creative Consultant. Alda was an Artillery Officer during the Korean War and Jamie Farr served in Korea post war. So they both had some understanding of actual Military life.
Having the glaring error of this video stating Wayne Rogers being in the "Trapper John MD" TV series, whom was actually played by Pernell Roberts; then what validity does this video have with regards to accurate information of the other cast members?
Wayne Rodgers didn’t star in Trapper John MD so he didn’t have a great career, afterwards. But he did have bit parts on Murder She Wrote. What a honor. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
8ch Ivy, Wayne Rogers was worth $75 million at the time of his death. He obviously did something right besides Murder She Wrote. It may not have been acting but he had a great career doing something to be worth that much money. Alan Alda is worth $50 million and Mike Farrell is worth 10 million. The writers gave Hawkeye the funniest lines and I thought Alda delivered them to a tee. The Season 6 episode called “Images” was one of the saddest in my opinion. A dog Margaret had befriended was killed by a jeep causing her to be overcome with grief. The dog came into her life at a time when she felt especially lonely, unappreciated and stressed out. Consequently when the dog seemed to be her only friend, she was shattered when hearing of its demise.
So many great characters, but my fave was Radar. I met Gary Burghoff when I was 11 years old and he was very nice, and that must have been around the time he left the show. My aunt's boyfriend had a small part in an episode and took me to the set (where I met Burghoff). The boyfriend was in the running to join the cast as a new character replacing Radar, but the show runners increased Klinger's part (and others?) instead. Acting is a tough business.
There was something different about MASH. We loved every character and with the replacement of every character who was replaced, came a new character whom we loved as much. The writers and casting directors are the ones who deserve the kudos. The actors merely bring the characters conceived by the writers to life. If the characters are weak, or roles are miscast, there is nothing the actors can do to make it work.
I was annoyed that the narrator made no mention of Charles Emerson Winchester III. What a unique replacement for Frank Burns! The character brought an even greater foil to get under Hawkeye and BJ's skin. David Ogden Stiers played Winchester remarkably. I often wondered if the actor's personality was akin to the character he portrayed?
I agree, the show would never have lasted as long as it did if the writers, producers, directors or even the cast just tried to replace each departing character with the same type. I was only a tween or young teenager when the movie came out and my parents didn’t enjoy it at all as I think the timing of release was wrong for my parents, yet our entire family loved the series on t.v. The U.S. and Canada to a lesser extent were in the middle of the Vietnam War and it had been less than 15 years since the end of the Korean Conflict and less than 25 since the end of WWII not to mention the turbulent 60’s domestically.
McLean Stevenson was my personal favorite cast member. Harry Morgan was as good as could be hoped for as his replacement, but Stevenson's performance as Col. Blake added something great that couldn't be replaced.
Loved Mash. It was repeated too soon and too often after it finished and so fell out watching it, but would love to watch it all over now. (Like the original Flintstones, Top Cat and others.) The original Thunderbirds too!
@@FactsVerse Don't think I ever had a best episode. Can't remember exactly anyway. Well I do remember the gay one. Perhaps the earlier series were the best generally, before anyone left? This doesn't mean the later characters and stars took away from the show. Far from it. One thing I did hate, but it's a production value that wasn't in every series, is that obnoxious canned laughter. Someone must have been fighting to get rid of it. It's very low brow and treats people with contempt. If it's funny, they will laugh. At home or out.
You and I have a lot in common. I loved MASH, especially the ones with Henry Blake. I also love cartoons. Jetsons, Top Cat, Flintstones, Scooby Doo (The first two seasons), and Looney Tunes. I am 63 right now and have the DVD of all of them except the Looney Tunes. I have been recording the ones I grew up with, but it's a long process. The channel I record then from shows other cartoons which I don't care for. When I was little, I would watch Sally Star, but I hated Popeye and some other toons she showed. The only other one I need to get is Johnny Quest.
Mash got me through some tough times and continues to do so. To this day, it still holds the record for most t.v viewers, during its final two episodes. (It was an hour long, two parter.) The odd thing about that fact, is they never play the last two episodes on TV. (At least not that I know of.) I watched every episode in a massive 3 day binge on Hulu a couple of years ago. It's my all time favorite TV show.
Sorry, I didn't see the comment right below mine. But it is kind of a big error to state that Wayne Rogers starred in Trapper John MD and I also don't remember him returning to MASH for a few episodes after he left. That would have been difficult to reconcile with the show's storyline since his character was discharged and sent back to the states.
Storytime. When I was but a young lass in the 90s, I took a trip with a truck driver friend of mine. We had various adventures, but one trip ended up at almost the top of a mountain at a bar/truck stop in Titpea Pennsylvania. I met an interesting bohemian couple whom I talked to while imbibing a couple of pints. The girl, (I'm sorry, both their names escape me) told me about her time as a bartender in the Florida Keys. She met famous celebrities from time to time and she said that the one she hated to serve was Gary Burghoff, because he became rude and loud. I'm assuming that this was mid to late 80s when she was in the Keys. So I don't know what happened, but he was definitely upset about something in his life.
I really enjoyed radar from the original movie all through the TV series. Hawkeye in the TV series he just got too full of himself, he started putting down regular army that was a beginning of the end for him far as I was concerned and that was back in the movie. Then regular army hatred carried on through into the series. That was the one thing that really killed it for me there, that really is the nail in the coffin. It was fun on TV, not looking for it anymore. Oh yeah loved Frank and hot lips both the movie and TV series. Then again this kind of just proves that Hollywood never took the Korean War serious either.

I agree with Charles Clager, as far as the characters of Hawkeye & Trapper. I saw the movie "M.A.S.H." & Trapper John was the chief surgeon. I heard that Alan Alda wanted the name of Hawkeye & to become chief surgeon. As much as I love the show (I have the full series & movie), what I didn't like was that it became the Hawkeye show & the M.A.S.H part was just there. Everything was done to Hawkeye, he kissed all the nurses, went to the field hospitals, holes in his boots, etc. My favorite character of all the shows was Klinger (Jamie Farr). Every time I see him, even now makes me laugh. My other favorite is Col Blake.
Alan Alda was making mash all about him, hence him being called Hawkeye, reason Wayne left Alda was getting more air time then others Alda was writing it that way
Gary (Radar), came immediately to mind, very different personalities, Alan always so intense on and I would guess off camera, Gary, more cautious and reserved. Have to say I loved everyone in the cast, they were perfection. Thank you for sharing, one of the best series ever!
I had heard that Gary Burghoff was difficult to get along with. I loved all the characters but I think 2 of my favorites were actually only occasional characters - Colonel Flagg and Sidney the Psychiatrist.
Wayne Rogers did NOT play on the series "Trapper John, MD" - that was a Parnell Roberts vehicle. Wayne Rogers later starred in the series "House Calls".
After all this time I thought it was Major Burns. Because Larry Linville did a interview regarding his role on M*A*S*H. You can watch it here on you tube. After season three I thought show went down hill after that. The show should have not lasted 11 seasons. As for Radar I thought he was always arrogant.
Larry Linville was a fantastic actor, the character he played made you love to hate him. When he left, the show lost a great character, MASH was at its best and funniest thanks to Linville’s ability and at the expense of Frank Burns. I have difficulty believing Gary Burgoff disliked Alan Alda.
For sure, but the writing was making him too goofy and though it was in the Korean War which can do strange things to folks, it was essentially a comedy people wanted to watch and laugh and it just so happened to be set-in war-torn Korea. Lighten up, writers, it wasn't about war or how great the doctors were but how folks can use humor to defuse otherwise bad situations. If they took it too seriously they would all go bonkers. Humor is the best medicine.
After _M*A*S*H_ there weren't many things he could move on to .... except for this role, he was very quickly forgotten. Interesting how the industry made them household names during their peaks, but after they "get tired of it," there's very little to do for them in the same industry. I just watched a great interview with Edvin Ryding and in it, he was asked what he thought was most important consideration in this industry (and elsewhere): _"Live your life to be the person you needed when you were younger."_ Only 20 years old in this interview and he can present a truly dynamic idea.
I grew up watching MASH and I loved it! I don't have a favorite character as I liked all of them for different things. I didn't know about the rivalries or who was hard to work with and who wasn't, but I really appreciated the character development that they put into the characters. I did like that Gary Burghoff played the drums, both on the show and in real life. I guess I could identify with Radar more than the other characters because I am short, quirky and play drums as well. Thanks for the great video and trip down memory lane.
M*A*S*H is my all time favorite show and to think it first aired before I was born. My favorite episodes were the deeper ones. Slapstick humor is nice but I'll take those deep soul searching episodes everyday and twice on Sunday. When BJ, Col Potter, and Maj Charles Emerson Winchester arrived were my favorite seasons. Winchester's tobagin cap on Christmas, the soldier who lost his memory when his kid brother died, Hawkeye giving the peace delegates a piece of his mind and Potter saying we're tired and want to go home.... some of my favorite episodes.
That's not really fair. Gary Burghoff (AKA: Radar) was not liked by *anyone* in the show. All cash members hated him. I recall it was Mike Farrell (AKA: BJ) who called Gary "... the best actor on the show." This is because he was hated so, and yet managed to play such a lovable character. That said, Burghoff was such an amazing actor that after he left, it took the show an additional season for Mash to regain its footing. Larry Linville I heard had psychological difficulties after he left the show. This due to the method acting, both on and off the set they kept poking fun at him. Could be wrong. He left I believe because he felt that his character could no longer grow, and that they played his character out as much as they could. I recall he was offered another season, but turned it down. Personally, I believe that he made the correct decision, granted I will always miss "Frank." I'll add that for Wayne Rogers (AKA: Trapper John) to leave the number one show of the 1970s to attempt his own show was just foolish. By 3rd season, Mash was amazing, and appeared only getting better. And, when you've got this amazing show, outstanding writers, just to leave the show over nonsense showed exceedingly poor judgement.
And I love them both! Equally good in their own capacity! Both made the show what it was! Gary and Alan are my heros@ We need new Spin off with Alda after the war home in small family practice new specialty mental health...NO ALDA CANT REFUSE! HE OWES US THIS!
M*A*S*H was a refreshing take on medical/military themed shows. I was hooked after seeing the movie the series was based upon. I was just beginning my career as a nurse when MASH premiered, and loved the irreverent humor immediately. It reflected what my mom used to call “nurse humor “ which she never understood. But those of us in the medical profession knew how important humor is to coping with life and death situations day after day. (I worked in ICU). So this series truly reflected my reality of some surgeons I’d worked with. The series was centered around Hawk Eye, still the writers were fair in giving each character their “day in the sun” so to speak. They weren’t shy about approaching sensitive issues either. I truly believe laughter is the best medicine so that is why this series and the excellent cast, and writing team will be my all-time favorite. I still watch and remember the reruns on Hulu!
Pernell Roberts, the oldest son on Bonanza, played Trapper John, M.D., in the series after MASH. Wayne Rogers was not in the Trapper John, M.D. series.
I wanted Wayne, did not like the casting. Pernell is better at darker stuff and am sure TRAPPER JOHN MD was to be a comedy so how great the doctor and nurse staff were not so much of an issue. I was surprised it lasted 7 seasons - I lost interest the first year.
Father Mulcahy was my favorite. He was a person I could admire, as his behavior mirrored his beliefs. They all were wonderful though and I continue to enjoy the show. It is like being with dear friends.

I remember reading an interview with Larry Linville about how he created the character of Frank. He said he gathered all the lousy traits he could think of from people he had known and put ALL of them into the character of Frank Burns. Wonderful character building. And it takes guts to play the annoying and hated character.

I loved the character development of Charles Emerson Winchester. At first he was a pompous ass but became "one of the guys" even playing practical jokes. I hope that David Ogden Stiers had a blast portraying Winchester.
As much as I disliked the character David depicted, I certainly admired his performances. We were meant to "dislike" David's character, and thus his addition to the series was a successful casting!

I studided mr stiers and he was a good actor i was shocked to find out he was gay i would have never expected that but he really dud a good job after frank left the show he was a great fit

I had read some time ago that one of the reasons that Rogers left was that when he was hired he was told that he and Alda had equal billing. As the show progressed he realized that he played second fiddle to Alda.

The Trapper John and Henry Blake characters were never fully developed by the writers.
For me it was John Patrick Francis Mulcahy . In the " heavier episodes, he had lines, that he delivered so well,that you couldn't believe it was Fr. Mulcahy delivering the line. I also had a Chaplain in the military that helped me get through difficult times. When I received my Honorable Discharge, I went to school to Chaplaincy School, so I could helpothers in difficult situations. William Christopher portrayed a Chaplain very well ..
when I was in my doctoral program, we had to introduce ourselves the first day. One man, Father Frank Toste said he was Bill Christopher' advisor and told us funny stories from behind the scenes. Farnk said his dad visited the set and told everyone that Harry Morgan was a great actor. Harry replied, " You better listen to Father Toste's father!
I remember HARRY MORGAN from the very early days of tv like SEPTEMBER BRIDE and DRAGNET. He also played GLENN MILLER's piano player CHUMMY MCGREGOR in the GLENN MILLER STORY. He IS a great actor and lots of experience.

One of the many ways in which the TV series watered down the great movie version by Robert Altman was making the chaplain a character taken seriously by the other characters. In the movie, Mulcahy was a useless boob. Considering how cynical everyone was at this frontline hospital, it was not surprising that the well-educated doctors would dismiss the religious nut. But TV inevitably seeks the lowest common denominator, so no denigrating superstition!
Also, Trapper John was supposed to be an equal to Hawkeye, the two best surgeons at this MASH unit. Alda started to take over the show fairly early on in its long run, so Wayne left, Larry left, Gary left. Trapper’s replacement was a teetotaling christian wimp, Henry with an old-school asshat & Gary with the ridiculous Klinger. The first year of the series was the best year, when there was some commitment to both the great movie & the very funny original novel.
A few years ago I wrote to the cast of M*A*S*H and requested autographs for my fiancee!
Wayne Rogers was the first to respond in 2015 with an autographed photo addressed personally to her! Little did we know that at the time he was terminally ill and sadly passed away later that year!
Mike Farrell also sent a personalized autographed photo to her as well!
Alan Alda responded two years later after I sent 3 separate letters!

All the letters I sent came back stamped "Return To Sender"
Sadly David Ogden Stires passed away before he could respond!
But the three she received are ones she treasures with all her heart!

Gary Burgoff was NOT a nice person. He was a good actor tho bcz he seemed like a good soul on the show. But he reputedly was hateful & stuck up.
I' m not surprised . Wayne Rogers and McLean Stevenson were the best actors on the program (I also liked the guy playing Col. Flagg !) . After Rogers and Stevenson left, it became the Alan Alda Show , complete with increasingly liberal political themes . The movie was a masterpiece ...in a league far above the program . The movie's casting was perfect !

Col. Potter - the father figure, Klinger - the guy who would give you the shirt off his back, Burns - the guy you loved to hate, and Winchester - the stuffed shirt that would occasionally show his human side. These were my favorites. Great supporting cast. Even Margaret had an arc where you got to see her change/grow from the start to the end of the show. Great casting all around.

Absolutely loved every episode and every character! M*A*S*H* is just perfect! I still remember feeling choked up when they announced the death of Col. Blake (Which apparently was kept from the rest of the cast until filming to get a proper shocked reaction from everyone) and the final episode? Well that was a magnificent ending to the greatest series of all time (By the way, I got choked up watching that as well!)

I can still recall that feeling when we lost Henry and Trapper at the end of season three. How many shows could've survived the loss of its two favourite characters ? But somehow Mash did, and that final episode was another gut-wrenching goodbye to characters and a show that is still greatly loved.
I found the first 3 series of MASH superb. But when Trapper and Henry left it went downhill. The utterly appalling BJ Hunnicutt played by Mike Farrell was the worst. He was absolute saccharin PC garbage. And Jamie Farr playing the one joke cross-dressing Klinger, used repeatedly later in the series as they ran out of ideas. Hawkeye, Trapper, Hotlips, Frank, Henry and Radar. They were brilliant early on in the early series. Possibly with the wonderful Frank Burns almost stealing the show. And the wisecracking dialogue between Hawkeye and Trapper.
My most memorable line was when Henry had had a brief fling and felt guilty about it. He confessed it in a letter to his wife and to his great delight she forgave him. He was reading her letter to Hawkeye and Trapper walking behind them in the camp. Reading from the letter his wife says, (roughly, from my memory) "Henry, I understand the pressures you're under over there, living like animals in tents ..." Hawkeye replies, " I didn't know animals lived in tents?" One of the great comedy lines to me.
It was a strong reminder that war takes great people away from us. What a tearful episode! Radar breaking the news to the staff was one of the saddest moments in TV episode history.
WHY are they so memorable? BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T ALL FOCUSED ON WHAT 'GOOD OL' HAWK' DID TO THAT SHOW: Gone were the skirt chasing Buddies & in came dry, wife 'n kids guy. Gone was the incompetent & funny Spouse cheater & the dynamic w/'Hotlips' & Cool Col Blake who'd let them get away w/the funny Buddies stuff & in came an over the hill actor wagging a finger at Hawk. What's left to laugh at?
I met Alan Alda a few years ago. He was so nice. Great to have seen him. Talked to him. Great actor.
Alan Alda also had played in several other really good movies like in BRIDGE OF SPIES the role of the boss of the Insurance Company.
The episode that stands out for me is the one where Colonel Blake is finally going to be sent home. We see him fly away in the helicopter and think, "Well, someone is getting his happy ending." Only to have our hearts broken when word comes during OR duty that Blake's chopper crashed and he was killed. That was just devastating.
Was written on purpose out of spite for leaving to do Hello Larry......so he could never come back😮

It was during MASH, that I fell in love (non-romantically) with Larry Linville as an actor. It takes a tremendous depth of talent to portray all of those different characters that he played -- all rolled into one, as Frank Burns! Very impressive acting!!
He WAS a good actor, with an unbelievable range. He impressed me when I saw him in another role in which he sounded and even looked entirely different. I realize that's what actors do, but man, he was really good at it.

I think Charles was the only character that was allowed to grow. The rest were stuck in a groove. Underneath he had heart, warmth, under that Boston facade.
Yes,there were several scenes where Charles was portrayed as a thoughtful,decent guy. The Christmas episode where he bought the orphans candy was one. It was recently shown on ME TV.
A diamond in the rough, he wanted to be one of the boys but that BOSTON upbringing fought him along the way, he played that so well.
Hawkeye and Margaret Hoolihan grew as well.

Larry Linville was the best actor on that show by far. He always portrayed the bumbling idiot and Alan Alda and his cohorts were always the neverending hero's. Few(if any) actors could have pulled off the character of Frank Burns as well as Linville did. He was never really given the proper credit he deserved for making that show the huge success it was
Disagree. Linville was the best actor on set until Morgan came in as Colonel Potter. Morgan set his own standard, later remarked by Jamie Farr, who considered him his acting mentor. Sofar I didn't read about a castmember choosing Linville as mentor.
It's my understanding that, aside from Gary Burghoff, Larry Linville was the only actor who left the show that didn't regret it. (The truth might be much murkier than this, but…) He'd taken Frank as far as he could go and knew it was time to move on.

I didn’t know Gary disliked Alan Alda. My favorite Characters were Trapper John and Colonel Henry Blake. The Entire Cast were gifted Actors! I interviewed for Radar’s Part and obviously didn’t get it. I was Drafted into the army shortly thereafter. I became Radar’s character in real life…I was a Company Clerk! 😂God has a sense of humor!

@@ShannonFreng there are so many! The Captain,Lieutenant, and First Sergeant depend on the Company Clerk to know things they don’t like all the Army Regulations. I’m a type A and like to do everything well. That gave me an advantage about not doing things I didn’t want to do. In time…they cut me a lot of slack. An example, the day I arrived I was fresh out of training, and 3 Lieutenants we’re fighting to get me because Company Clerks were hard to come by. I immediately recognized I was a commodity, so when I walked in to meet the Captain, he was overjoyed to meet me and shook my hand and thanked me for coming!!! Lol like I had a choice…so I said “Sir, don’t thank me, Promote me!” He turned to the Sergeant and ordered him to type up my promotion papers. He told me he could take it away as fast as he gave it, and I told him “Sir, I won’t let you down.” So now I’m an E-3 in rank. Private First Class. Now there’s an Army regulation that you cannot be promoted to E-4 until you’ve been in the Army for 365 days. So, on my 366th day, I typed up my Promotion and put In between a bunch of other paperwork the Captain had to sign. Well…I heard him yell my last name and to report to him immediately! He said, “what the hell us this Murphy? You think you deserve a promotion?” I’m standing at attention and said, “Sir Yes Sir!” He shook his head and said laughing…oh all right and signed it! 😁

That just shows what great actors Alan Alda and Gary Burgough are. I don't know that many viewers, including myself, would have guessed they didn't get along. For them to make their characters look like they have good chemistry when they themselves didn't is an amazing talent.

Larry Linville was one of my favorite characters. I hated to see him leave, but David Ogden Stiers done a magnificent job of filling that void. The casting for M*A*S*H was incredible!

For a show to last eleven seasons shows that it has the rare gift of resonating with viewers, even with significant cast changes throughout. The ensemble cast was able to collaborate even if personal differences existed, and there was enough variety in the storylines to hold the viewers' interest. The show was still on top when it ended in the two-hour finale.

As a WW2 & Korean War veteran, my paternal grandfather loved M*A*S*H* & was greatly dismayed when it was cancelled. I upset him when I told him, as a teenager, that I couldn't care less about whether it went or stayed on the air, but what do kids know? How I wish that Grandpa was still around these days to ask questions about his 23 years of military service! He rarely spoke about that time in his life, but he must have found much that was similar to that time in M*A*S*H*.
Actually met Larry. He came to speak at our college. Nothing like the Burns character- as pleasant and charming as can be. Can’t say the same for some of the students in the audience

Great show. Overdosed on it years ago when a stupid roommate insisted on watching the show 12 hours a day. The upside is that I now have practically the entire run of the show memorized. Not a bad deal considering it was some of the best TV writing ever done.

The two actors I think were the most memorable were McLean Stevenson and Harry Morgan. Harry did a hell of a job filling in, and added so much to the show. I still remember them drinking a salute to his former and present friends.
Harry Morgan was without a doubt my favorite in the whole series. But even Col Potter devolved into a caricature by the series's dismal end.

At the end of the day, Linville said the further development of Margaret left little else for the Frank Burns character. Alda also said the character was being written as more and more mentally unstable and, after awhile, it wasn't funny anymore mocking someone "literally crazy"

Both actors played their characters fantastically though Charles was better utililized as the show went from a comedy with dramatic touches to a drama with comedic tones. He was still rather pompous but he had a sympathetic side to him and he knew how to dish out pranks and insults back. Charles earned a degree of respect Frank never got from Hawkeye.
It's a testament to the talent on the show that apparently Larry Linville was in reality one of the nicest people in real life, and that Radar looked up to Hawkeye as part older brother, part idol, Hawkeye looked at Radar as part little brother and part adopted stray puppy and both made you think the actors felt as close as their characters.
Radar was supposed to be a teenager, or very close to it. I never could buy into that. He looked too old. And his deformed left hand that they always had to hide added another air of unreality. But I still liked him better than Klinger. Even as a little kid, I just couldn't respect a guy who disrespected the Army so much as to wear dresses. Guess growing up with a very decorated officer daddy had something to do with that, lol.
@@s.c.7362 Gary Burghoff was 27 when they made the MASH movie, and 36 when he left the show. I never saw him as a teenager, a guy in his early 20s maybe at best.
Nah Klinger didn't do it out of disrespect, he just wanted to go home. When Radar left and Klinger realised he wouldn't go home, he took over Radar's role as the very loyal clerk of the regiment.
Also, FYI Wayne Rogers NEVER reprised his role as Trapper in ANY later episodes.

In the Season 4 episode Welcome To Korea, Hawkeye learns that Trapper got his discharge papers while he (Hawkeye) was on R&R. Hawkeye along with Radar tried to catch Trapper before he left but unfortunately missed him by ten minutes.

I am a fan of M*A*S*H just like I am a fan of Alan Alda. I am a fan of all the actors of the show; they were what made the show so remarkable. I still watch the reruns on MeTV and enjoy each one of them. Brings me back to my childhood when it was "tradition" to watch it every week in my family.
We also usually watch MASH on MeTV as many days as my schedule will permit. I loved all the characters, in their good and bad, and just about all the episodes ( few notables excepted - the dream sequence one particularly). During college - MASH was on 2-3 times /day and was was frequently watched. The series closer was a real heartbreaker, and is not shown very often, compared to the others.
Trapper John MD was played by Pernell Roberts from Bonanza. Rogers played DR. Charley Michaels on House Calls for 3 seasons
I remember House Calls was a hit until they fired Lynn Redgrave for breast feeding her baby on the set, I watched it even after that (they replaced her with Sharon Gless) but the ratings dropped and it was cancelled, Wayne also played Tony Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie 15 years later bc Larry Hagman didn't want to do it (he was doing Dallas and also he didn't like his time on I Dream of Jeannie).

Why did he not play his MASH role? I liked PERNELL in darker stuff - whereas Wayne was great for comedy.
It’s hard to choose a favorite character on Mash! Each one was unique and the actors portrayed them so perfectly. I think Radar and Klinger could be my favorites if I didn’t like Hawkeye or Winchester and so on. I liked them all so much!

I heard years back that it was Colonel Potter that was not too fond of Radar in real life. I loved this show, one of the best ever shown on the tube. My favorite was LtCol Henry Blake played by McLean Stevenson and lost interest in watching the show when they killed him in a plane crash. I thought Larry Linville did a masterful job of playing Major Burns, the officer we loved to hate and he reminded me of way too many officers in the military. All in all, one of my top ten all time shows.

I liked Frank and Larry Linville was perfect for that role. As time went on, the writers went a little to far and made him out to be a total idiot. Then Charles came in and, after one season, became buddy buddy with everyone.

You know, I still remember the final episode. Wayne Rogers also said he left MASH because it was costing him money, he could make more money in the business worlds than working on Mash.

I heard Wayne Rogers say he left mash because he didn't think the show was going to be on much longer. 4 or 5 seasons is typical for most sitcoms. Wayne also said when the show ran for as long as it did, he regretted leaving

It's hard for me to pick a favorite character because they're all very unique. Hawkeye's humor, Frank's cynicism, Radar's effectiveness, Clinger's insanity. They're all fantastic characters.
Klinger wasn't insane. That was the whole thing. He was gunning for a Section 8 but they all knew he was faking it. That's actually very cowardly and he wouldn't have ever gotten by in any real Army outfit. (I'm the daughter of an O5 and Viet Nam veteran. Needless to say, I was raised on this show, and we loved it, but it was VERY much not based on any amount of reality. That's what made it funny.)
Frank's laugh was a little girl laugh, not a goose honking -- that might be Felix Unger's nasal condition.
If you ever want to see Gary Burghoff outside of Mash, check out some of his appearances on the old Match Game show. Hes about as annoying as a person could be. As for Wayne Rogers...I get his point about being a sidekick. Even at that point, Alda would get most of the dialogue and Rogers would get a line or two. Id be annoyed too
Trapper John h had the best facial expressions of anyone on the show. His looks during the ‘Liver/Fish’ scene is worth watching again and again. Classic.

I am glad so many people enjoyed the TV series. I am a HUGE fan of the movie and was spoiled by it and, while I watched the TV series on and off, I could never fully get over the differences how characters differed from the movie and felt I was being lectured to, especially by Alan Alda. Still, the success and influence of the series cannot be denied.
Just stick to Seasons 1-3. No lectures- just pure comedy. The show becomes a completely different show in Season 4-11.

Mash will remain one of my favorites for its originality. It wasn't until I watched the movie that a lot of the TV series made sense--particularly Hot Lips.

@Facts Verse it has been more than a decade since I watched it. I can't think of a particular episode, but I can think of certain scenes that always made it funny. Radar is funny in how he always foresees what Hunnicutt is about to order. Of course, the episode when Hotlips gets her name. There are so many clips to remember.
Briliant show all round. A friend of mine served as a doctor in Afghanistan several times (one quarter of each year). For his birthday, I wanted to send him the complete MASH collection. But then I decided that that might not be quite proper, especially as much of what he experienced there was like the show in different ways, and not necessarily in good ways or something to laugh about at that time. I must say that I found a lot of things I experienced in the military myself in that show. The way the characters are portrayed, I must say I questioned my own attitude towards some of my officers and comrades and my service. Hawkeye may in some ways be admirable, but in others he also is a pretty holier-than-thou hypocrite and pain in the a**. In a real army, his attitude would be the straight way to Bedlam.
Wayne Rodgers was not on the show Trapper John MD. Pernell Robert's played Trapper John.
As an Army veteran I saw a lot of reality in the cast and goings on of the show, and my fave was Loretta Swit.
This is my favorite show of all time. My favorite character is Trapper, although the Frank Burns character is just one you love to hate. My dad had the good fortune to meet McLean Stevenson when he worked for Piedmont Airlines and McLean did the commercials. He said he was very cordial and willing to talk quite a bit about the show. He said in later years he wondered if leaving the show was a good thing after all. At the company picnic my dad told him I was a huge fan and he got an autograph on a paper plate for me. Dad also met Gary Burghoff at an airline party with BF Goodrich, which had a MASH theme. He said he was nice and gave him an autograph for me. My favorite episodes were Crisis, Private Charles Lamb, and The Incubator.

The Incubator has my favorite "military" joke in it. The US military (especially the Navy, but all branches) loves "portmanteau" words: words that abbreviate phrases using syllables instead of initial letters. "COMSURFLANT" for Commander, Surface Fleet, Atlantic for example.
So after Hawkeye and Trapper confront a general over the Incubator and they are back at camp with Henry reading about the incident, Henry says "Did you really call a 2 star general a NINCOMPAC?"

@@evilpenguinmas Yes, that line was great. My daughter and I love when he asked if they really said give me an incubator or give me death. It resonates with me because I work with poultry and we have incubators for hatching our eggs. They are really old and frustrating, so I've often wanted to use that line to our supervisors. If they don't know the show, they wouldn't get it though.
Loved the show, it was one of a kind and the actors were fantastic, no matter who came or went, it was always admirable to see that most of the cast got along with each other.

I love M*A*S*H and have probably seen every episode from the pilot where they raffled off Lt Dish and a weekend in Tokyo to the Farewell episode. I have to say that although the entire series was a classic, my favorites were Seasons 1, 2, and 3. The following seasons could never come close to the chemistry of the original cast and my heart belonged to Trapper John from the beginning. ❤
I agree. The first few seasons were just hilarious. The newer seasons were ok but they became a little drama filled. I think that was because of Alan.

The real Benjamin Hawkeye Pierce was based on real life Army surgeon H Richard Hornberger. Hornberger came to hate the show. He felt that Alan Alda trampled his memories of his time in the Korean War and that Alda took off with his own liberal values because Hooker was a strong political conservative.

For me it is impossible to pick a favorite character. They were all great! However, I loved the evolution of Margaret. The contributing events (nowhere relationship followed by a faithless marriage) could have embittered her but instead she became delightfully human!

Who is doing the research for this channel? Wayne Rogers did NOT reprise his role in Trapper John, MD and he did NOT come back later for a few episodes of MASH. Is "Facts Verse" supposed to be an ironic name for the channel?
My favorite character is Col. Flagg. He was an antagonistic bully that added a comical spice to the show. IF you disagree, expect a box of scorpions on your front doorstep.
All the characters were either very good, awesome or even exceptional. Every character improves the show in some way or another, my favourites( in order) were Hawkeye, Winchester, burns, trapper, Col Potter, BJ, Radar, Father M, Clinger, and hot lips.
I put Hawkeye first because he was glue that tied the shows characters together and it wouldn’t be mash without him.
I grew up watching this show. My father served in Korea and it was funny slapstick style during the first 3 seasons then became more serious. I still watch maybe 2-3 episodes every day. I only do this with 2 shows, MASH, and Original Star Trek. I guess some of the original actors might have felt in the shadows of Alda. Alda did contribute much by not only acting, but being Writer, Director, and Creative Consultant. Alda was an Artillery Officer during the Korean War and Jamie Farr served in Korea post war. So they both had some understanding of actual Military life.
Having the glaring error of this video stating Wayne Rogers being in the "Trapper John MD" TV series, whom was actually played by Pernell Roberts; then what validity does this video have with regards to accurate information of the other cast members?
Wayne Rodgers didn’t star in Trapper John MD so he didn’t have a great career, afterwards. But he did have bit parts on Murder She Wrote. What a honor. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Wayne Rogers was worth $75 million at the time of his death. He obviously did something right besides Murder She Wrote. It may not have been acting but he had a great career doing something to be worth that much money. Alan Alda is worth $50 million and Mike Farrell is worth 10 million. I’d say that Wayne Rogers must have done something right.

The writers gave Hawkeye the funniest lines and I thought Alda delivered them to a tee. The Season 6 episode called “Images” was one of the saddest in my opinion. A dog Margaret had befriended was killed by a jeep causing her to be overcome with grief. The dog came into her life at a time when she felt especially lonely, unappreciated and stressed out. Consequently when the dog seemed to be her only friend, she was shattered when hearing of its demise.

So many great characters, but my fave was Radar. I met Gary Burghoff when I was 11 years old and he was very nice, and that must have been around the time he left the show. My aunt's boyfriend had a small part in an episode and took me to the set (where I met Burghoff). The boyfriend was in the running to join the cast as a new character replacing Radar, but the show runners increased Klinger's part (and others?) instead. Acting is a tough business.
I've watched Mash over and over and over again, its always great, I'm still watching it on TV.
There was something different about MASH. We loved every character and with the replacement of every character who was replaced, came a new character whom we loved as much. The writers and casting directors are the ones who deserve the kudos. The actors merely bring the characters conceived by the writers to life. If the characters are weak, or roles are miscast, there is nothing the actors can do to make it work.

I was annoyed that the narrator made no mention of Charles Emerson Winchester III. What a unique replacement for Frank Burns! The character brought an even greater foil to get under Hawkeye and BJ's skin. David Ogden Stiers played Winchester remarkably. I often wondered if the actor's personality was akin to the character he portrayed?
I agree, the show would never have lasted as long as it did if the writers, producers, directors or even the cast just tried to replace each departing character with the same type. I was only a tween or young teenager when the movie came out and my parents didn’t enjoy it at all as I think the timing of release was wrong for my parents, yet our entire family loved the series on t.v. The U.S. and Canada to a lesser extent were in the middle of the Vietnam War and it had been less than 15 years since the end of the Korean Conflict and less than 25 since the end of WWII not to mention the turbulent 60’s domestically.
McLean Stevenson was my personal favorite cast member. Harry Morgan was as good as could be hoped for as his replacement, but Stevenson's performance as Col. Blake added something great that couldn't be replaced.
Loved Mash. It was repeated too soon and too often after it finished and so fell out watching it, but would love to watch it all over now. (Like the original Flintstones, Top Cat and others.)

Perhaps the earlier series were the best generally, before anyone left? This doesn't mean the later characters and stars took away from the show. Far from it.
One thing I did hate, but it's a production value that wasn't in every series, is that obnoxious canned laughter. Someone must have been fighting to get rid of it. It's very low brow and treats people with contempt. If it's funny, they will laugh. At home or out.
You and I have a lot in common. I loved MASH, especially the ones with Henry Blake. I also love cartoons. Jetsons, Top Cat, Flintstones, Scooby Doo (The first two seasons), and Looney Tunes. I am 63 right now and have the DVD of all of them except the Looney Tunes. I have been recording the ones I grew up with, but it's a long process. The channel I record then from shows other cartoons which I don't care for. When I was little, I would watch Sally Star, but I hated Popeye and some other toons she showed. The only other one I need to get is Johnny Quest.

Mash got me through some tough times and continues to do so. To this day, it still holds the record for most t.v viewers, during its final two episodes. (It was an hour long, two parter.) The odd thing about that fact, is they never play the last two episodes on TV. (At least not that I know of.) I watched every episode in a massive 3 day binge on Hulu a couple of years ago. It's my all time favorite TV show.
Sorry, I didn't see the comment right below mine. But it is kind of a big error to state that Wayne Rogers starred in Trapper John MD and I also don't remember him returning to MASH for a few episodes after he left. That would have been difficult to reconcile with the show's storyline since his character was discharged and sent back to the states.

Storytime. When I was but a young lass in the 90s, I took a trip with a truck driver friend of mine. We had various adventures, but one trip ended up at almost the top of a mountain at a bar/truck stop in Titpea Pennsylvania. I met an interesting bohemian couple whom I talked to while imbibing a couple of pints. The girl, (I'm sorry, both their names escape me) told me about her time as a bartender in the Florida Keys. She met famous celebrities from time to time and she said that the one she hated to serve was Gary Burghoff, because he became rude and loud. I'm assuming that this was mid to late 80s when she was in the Keys. So I don't know what happened, but he was definitely upset about something in his life.

I really enjoyed radar from the original movie all through the TV series. Hawkeye in the TV series he just got too full of himself, he started putting down regular army that was a beginning of the end for him far as I was concerned and that was back in the movie. Then regular army hatred carried on through into the series. That was the one thing that really killed it for me there, that really is the nail in the coffin. It was fun on TV, not looking for it anymore. Oh yeah loved Frank and hot lips both the movie and TV series. Then again this kind of just proves that Hollywood never took the Korean War serious either.
It evolved into the Vietnam war in reality. Hawkeyes politics indicate that.

I agree with Charles Clager, as far as the characters of Hawkeye & Trapper. I saw the movie "M.A.S.H." & Trapper John was the chief surgeon. I heard that Alan Alda wanted the name of Hawkeye & to become chief surgeon. As much as I love the show (I have the full series & movie), what I didn't like was that it became the Hawkeye show & the M.A.S.H part was just there. Everything was done to Hawkeye, he kissed all the nurses, went to the field hospitals, holes in his boots, etc. My favorite character of all the shows was Klinger (Jamie Farr). Every time I see him, even now makes me laugh. My other favorite is Col Blake.
Alan Alda was making mash all about him, hence him being called Hawkeye, reason Wayne left Alda was getting more air time then others Alda was writing it that way

You got that right! I don't even care to watch the latter episodes because Alda took over the lions share of the show.
Gary (Radar), came immediately to mind, very different personalities, Alan always so intense on and I would guess off camera, Gary, more cautious and reserved. Have to say I loved everyone in the cast, they were perfection. Thank you for sharing, one of the best series ever!
I had heard that Gary Burghoff was difficult to get along with. I loved all the characters but I think 2 of my favorites were actually only occasional characters - Colonel Flagg and Sidney the Psychiatrist.
Flagg was epic! My favorite as well.
Wayne Rogers did NOT play on the series "Trapper John, MD" - that was a Parnell Roberts vehicle. Wayne Rogers later starred in the series "House Calls".
Max Klinger was my favorite along with colonel Potter.

After all this time I thought it was Major Burns. Because Larry Linville did a interview regarding his role on M*A*S*H. You can watch it here on you tube. After season three I thought show went down hill after that. The show should have not lasted 11 seasons.
As for Radar I thought he was always arrogant.
Larry Linville was a fantastic actor, the character he played made you love to hate him. When he left, the show lost a great character, MASH was at its best and funniest thanks to Linville’s ability and at the expense of Frank Burns. I have difficulty believing Gary Burgoff disliked Alan Alda.
For sure, but the writing was making him too goofy and though it was in the Korean War which can do strange things to folks, it was essentially a comedy people wanted to watch and laugh and it just so happened to be set-in war-torn Korea. Lighten up, writers, it wasn't about war or how great the doctors were but how folks can use humor to defuse otherwise bad situations. If they took it too seriously they would all go bonkers. Humor is the best medicine.
After _M*A*S*H_ there weren't many things he could move on to .... except for this role, he was very quickly forgotten. Interesting how the industry made them household names during their peaks, but after they "get tired of it," there's very little to do for them in the same industry.
I just watched a great interview with Edvin Ryding and in it, he was asked what he thought was most important consideration in this industry (and elsewhere): _"Live your life to be the person you needed when you were younger."_ Only 20 years old in this interview and he can present a truly dynamic idea.
Fav. character for me, Frank Burns by far. His leaving the show was the greatest loss for me!
I grew up watching MASH and I loved it! I don't have a favorite character as I liked all of them for different things. I didn't know about the rivalries or who was hard to work with and who wasn't, but I really appreciated the character development that they put into the characters. I did like that Gary Burghoff played the drums, both on the show and in real life. I guess I could identify with Radar more than the other characters because I am short, quirky and play drums as well. Thanks for the great video and trip down memory lane.
M*A*S*H is my all time favorite show and to think it first aired before I was born. My favorite episodes were the deeper ones. Slapstick humor is nice but I'll take those deep soul searching episodes everyday and twice on Sunday. When BJ, Col Potter, and Maj Charles Emerson Winchester arrived were my favorite seasons. Winchester's tobagin cap on Christmas, the soldier who lost his memory when his kid brother died, Hawkeye giving the peace delegates a piece of his mind and Potter saying we're tired and want to go home.... some of my favorite episodes.
That's not really fair. Gary Burghoff (AKA: Radar) was not liked by *anyone* in the show. All cash members hated him. I recall it was Mike Farrell (AKA: BJ) who called Gary "... the best actor on the show." This is because he was hated so, and yet managed to play such a lovable character. That said, Burghoff was such an amazing actor that after he left, it took the show an additional season for Mash to regain its footing.
Larry Linville I heard had psychological difficulties after he left the show. This due to the method acting, both on and off the set they kept poking fun at him. Could be wrong. He left I believe because he felt that his character could no longer grow, and that they played his character out as much as they could. I recall he was offered another season, but turned it down. Personally, I believe that he made the correct decision, granted I will always miss "Frank."
I'll add that for Wayne Rogers (AKA: Trapper John) to leave the number one show of the 1970s to attempt his own show was just foolish. By 3rd season, Mash was amazing, and appeared only getting better. And, when you've got this amazing show, outstanding writers, just to leave the show over nonsense showed exceedingly poor judgement.
And I love them both! Equally good in their own capacity! Both made the show what it was! Gary and Alan are my heros@ We need new Spin off with Alda after the war home in small family practice new specialty mental health...NO ALDA CANT REFUSE! HE OWES US THIS!
M*A*S*H was a refreshing take on medical/military themed shows. I was hooked after seeing the movie the series was based upon. I was just beginning my career as a nurse when MASH premiered, and loved the irreverent humor immediately. It reflected what my mom used to call “nurse humor “ which she never understood. But those of us in the medical profession knew how important humor is to coping with life and death situations day after day. (I worked in ICU). So this series truly reflected my reality of some surgeons I’d worked with. The series was centered around Hawk Eye, still the writers were fair in giving each character their “day in the sun” so to speak. They weren’t shy about approaching sensitive issues either.
I truly believe laughter is the best medicine so that is why this series and the excellent cast, and writing team will be my all-time favorite. I still watch and remember the reruns on Hulu!

Pernell Roberts, the oldest son on Bonanza, played Trapper John, M.D., in the series after MASH. Wayne Rogers was not in the Trapper John, M.D. series.
I wanted Wayne, did not like the casting. Pernell is better at darker stuff and am sure TRAPPER JOHN MD was to be a comedy so how great the doctor and nurse staff were not so much of an issue. I was surprised it lasted 7 seasons - I lost interest the first year.
Father Mulcahy was my favorite. He was a person I could admire, as his behavior mirrored his beliefs. They all were wonderful though and I continue to enjoy the show. It is like being with dear friends.
