Hello Lawsons, note on making fig preserves… delicious! I’m 78 and I’ve always made mine the way my mom and grandma made them. Ratio is 2, c fruit to 1, c sugar. Wash cut figs and measure them cover figs with sugar, let stand until it forms syrup. Not all the sugar will not dissolve. You can cover and leave in fridge overnight, remove from fridge, start on low to medium heat. You can increase heat but it will scorch easy. It takes several hours to cook down. To me this is a trick to keep from overcooking. I’ve have begun to use a candy thermometer, letting mixture reach soft ball stage. If they are overcooked, they can go to sugar. When cooked as you like, can in usual canning method. You can used this ratio and way to make other fruit preserves. My husband love blackberry preserves. Hope this helps
That is exactly how my mother and now my 74 year old self cooks figs. Also, on the first day of fig season, we made homemade bread so that when the figs were done, the bread was coming out of the oven. Those were the best if days.

Meghan, on, CELEBRATING APPALACHIAN she makes up some kind of pepper spray for her squash and pickle vines and she said it is working... Thought that might be something you might would look in to... It is so dry here also with no rain, I think we are suppose to get a shower on Wednesday... Garden looks so good, ty both for sharing, GOD BLESS YOU BOTH 🙏

What a great garden!! I planted some corn the other day. I went out to water them this morning and found a few little sprouts coming up.
Put some net bags (oranges ) around the hanging cantalope & hook it to the trellis - it'll grow inside the bag

I love this channel so much. I live in southern California and i dream of owning my own land one day. Hopefully i can leave California within the next 3 years until then i have my backyard with plants in grow bags. Our soil is terrible here and i don't own the house. Y’all a gardener in Arkansas turned me on to Hungarian Heart tomatoes for the heat. From Baker Creek seeds. I live in zone 7 Memphis. Just picked one today at 1 lb 11 oz. They start at half a pound but most are bigger. Indeterminate Heirloom Pink sweet meaty canning or slicer tomato. I might only grow these next year. Taste like a Brandywine 😋 wish I could show you pictures here. Read the reviews.

God is good…we got about an inch and a half yesterday..we also had been a long time w/o rain. Most of the corn crop in our area of eastern NC has suffered immensely…some have already plowed their’s in…so thankful for every drop that fell!
Same in southeastern Kentucky. My poor, pitiful corn is only waist high…😢

My 82yo mother prefers the white cucumbers. She says the skin is softer - easier on dentures - and the flavor is milder with no bitter taste. So, I always grow a few white plants for her.
I’ve never seen a white cucumber before but I love cucumbers

Hey Megan, if you guys want to stop the disease on the cukes just spray the leaves and vines with raw milk. You can also mix baking soda with water and spray with it, but don't go to heavy on the soda or you'll kill the leaves. I just sprayed raw milk on my pumpkin vines and it works wonders on mildew.
Oh my goodness Meg, you make fig preserves to go with the sausage, eggs and biscuits that will be your favorite breakfast. I just made nine and a half pints and we've already ate the half pint with some buttermilk biscuits and bacon, yummy so good!

Blossom end rot - lacks calcium and or water to carry it up in plant - start savin and. Grindin all those egg shells
Calcium nitrate will fix blossom end rot short term. Mix in water and apply to the leaves of the plants. Add bonemeal as a supplement to the bed after the plants are pulled for the winter, and more in the spring before planting.

Love you guys and seeing every new video come out. I don’t have a lot of time to watch stuff these days due to garden and such. But I do enjoy when I can. My garden is pretty big I’m about to harvest my corn between now and the 18th. My pole beans have stalled out due to heat and no rain so I’m sad about that. I did plant some Chinese long green beans and them things like the heat! I plan to plant them things again next year and probably a whole row of them!!! They’re good! Things are beautiful even in the drought. God can make weeds look beautiful lol. ❤ But y’all pray for everyone who is struggling with their gardens and no rain. God bless y’all! Maybe someone has said this already or maybe you have even tried it already but Diatomaceous Earth Can Kill Squash Bugs.
Your gardens are beautiful and I love your excitement when you talk about them. I save the mesh bags I get produce in to put melons in when they're hanging like your cantelope is.
Y’all have the same problem I have, I don’t know which tomatoes are my Hossinators.. my husband planted all my starts and he got a few mixed up. I’ve got way too many Roma’s and San Marzan’s (spelling)planted, it’s alright.. I also planted Basil between my tomatoes this year and I know that’s why the deer have stayed away from that end of garden. The smell of Basil is awesome around our tomatoes.

You can have beautiful soil from wood chips, but it can lock up CALCIUM for YEARS sometimes and I just crush calcium tablets and sprinkle a lil around the base of the plants and it's a quick fix every time.

I used some "out of date calcium tablets " around my tomatoes and it helped with the blossom end rot. My Mom always watered her tomatoes as she washed out her milk containers and her tomatoes were awesome. Patera uses Tums and I tried it in my raised beds--- tomatoes did well. My whole garden is a science experiment. I have world champion weeds! Love your channel.

I harvested my little potato patch , I grew them in and old kiddie pool, soil and chicken manure got about 20 lbs , reds and golds an experiment that worked ok
Your tomato plants turning yellow might be magnesium deficiency. You can add Epsom salt around your plants.

My experience with vine borers is like yours. They seem to attack the zucchini and not the winter squash. If you take some loose fabric - nylon stockings or bug cover cloth works well, and wrap the base of the zucchini plant loosely where it comes out of the ground up about 6 to 8 inches when they first come up, you will pretty much eliminate the borer. The borers are very limited in the time they lay eggs and if you mechanically block their access to the vine, you win and they lose.
Hi, do you know if they attack cukes as well? Lost my zucchini and squash to them, and in the next box over, a cuke is dying. Also, can I do something to kill the eggs in the soil? Thanks for any help!
@@sandysmith8567 No I don't know about cucumbers I'm afraid. I suspect they would work the same way. I have read that if you search around the top of the stem where it comes out of the ground you can find a little round hole where the critter went in. And taking a sharp knife and cutting a whole on the top of the vine you may be able to get it out/kill it. It is just a caterpillar that lives in the vine munching away. I have also seen people cover the vines with soil as the vines will re-root if they have soil over them, so that is a way of saving the plant. Maybe till up the soil after the harvest so as to disrupt anything trying to over winter. Good luck!

I just love your garden - I'm learning so much from your channel. I have noticed lime works better for me than Gypsum. My gardens have been in Phoenix and the Ozarks of Missouri. Just thought I'd share.
Those cantaloupes will be fine hanging believe it or not those vines are stronger than you think.
Our squash bugs nailed the squash but left zuchini alone
Off grid w Doug/Stacy put a stick wrapped w copper in near the potatoes and they got a huge harvest where the copper was and not where there was no copper. I thought this was very interesting! But it can work for all plants !
Hey them October beans are delicious to pick young and snap and add a bunch of the big beans in them and cook till falling apart tender with some bacon fat and grease salt pepper! They are up there with the rattlesnake pole bean to me cooked like that! They’re delicious. Try them snapped and even the young pods roast them with some fresh diced garlic and olive oil salt and pepper on a cookie sheet! YUM!

❤ Morning Meagan & Andy! I learn so much from you two. I had never heard of a vole. M, about the fig preserves, when I lived in Louisiana in the 80s I stayed with a couple til I got settled. They had a fig tree in their yard and one day she was canning something. She said she was making Fig Preserves. They look a bit like apple butter only darker and thicker. They were very tasty, I must say. Some things just don’t sound good, I.e., Mama used to make Prune cakes. Sounds yucky but they were so good. They didn’t have frosting but a glaze over them. Very moist and so good!! By the way, I wonder if you could used fig preserves to make Fig Newtons like you make the Jam Breakfast Bars? I love Fig Newtons. Another thing I ate in LA that I had never had was Beans and Rice. Mrs. Wilson gave each of us a bowl of soup beans with a scoop of white rice in it. My eyes just got big! 😂 I had heard of Red Beans and Rice but never had any. So here I found another food I liked together. My sister brought me her 2nd tomato 🍅 yesterday. She bought a raised bed and only planted tomatoes. She has watered them every night since the area was small. We 3 siblings each got her first 3 tomatoes. My bro. bought raised beds as well. He planted different things. He works 12 hour shifts and my sis in law doesn’t cook so as things come in I hope he can at least fix them so they can eat on them. There is a reason my sil doesn’t cook. It isn’t because of laziness….she is an amazing cleaner. Maggie and Jacob are doing a great job growing!! It makes a big difference when they are doing something they enjoy and are interested in. There isn’t one flower 🌸 I saw that was as lovely as Maggie. Jacob’s pride just beams on his cute face. Megan I've already got a tomatoes. That tomatoe sammich with soft white bread and Dukes mayonnaise is the best. I sometimes crave them in the winter. Well I just make biscuits and tomato gravy and that curbs my cravings. .

A great video! My mountain property has never had a garden on it and consists of the red clay you have on your property, I am going to add wood chips to it and hopefully over time it will turn into a soil of sorts.

With all of y’all’s squash make squash fritters with them and make into patties and freeze them. I got the recipe from the Mac’s life on TH-cam. Hope you will give it a try my family really liked them.

Sure did enjoy you and Andy's walkabout around the house and main garden area and the beautiful FLOWER Garden of Miss Maggie's and Jacob's garden too. Our storm has moved on hopefully. We were without pour 3 or 4 times today. No damage to us here in Broaddus TX thank you Lord for keeping us safe.

It actually doesn't do the tomatoes any favors by pruning them... I stopped pruning mine and they do just as well, sometimes even better, without the work. Love your channel!

Andy and Megan here in our part of Arizona we call your garden wire "field wire". We use it around our property but for our garden we use "rabbit wire". We have a lot of rabbits, squirrels and birds. I don't mind sharing with them but they are very picky eaters. They will take a bite or two from a tomato or anything else and decide that one isn`t good enough. So, on to the next and the next and so on. I absolutely love your gardens. It is very difficult growing in the desert. Love your videos! Keep up the good work and doing everything as a family is such a blessed message.

A place I used to live where i had fenced my garden I also left the posts tall. I was going to run deer netting above the woven wire. Well, one day I walked out & thought it looked funny so I cut them down only to remember afterwards why I had left them tall 😂😂 my bad. Love your gardens and learn a lot about methods to try. I dont have deer pressure here but the squirrels have eaten almost all my peaches! Ugh!!! Look forward to part 2. Blessings 🕊
I love fig preserves. You will not regret making preserves. The juice is definitely worth the squeezing. First time I heard that and I will be using it from now on. 😂 Make a hammock for the cantaloupes out of some old material and attach it to the trellis.

My mom and i always cut up some lemon in our fig preserves. Stir the cooking preserves well and cook on low to keep them scorching. We also cut our leftover gree watermelon rinds into chunks and preserved them. Delicious with biscuits. Love the Lawsons.❤

Enjoying the garden tour. Looks beautiful. I've had problems with end rot on my tomatoes also. So what I read was that the soil lacked Calcium. So, I just crushed egg shells & put in the bottom of the tomato hole when I planted them. Not one end rot. Just wanted to pass it on. Love your videos❤️
We use from Amazon solar powered waterproof vole repellent stakes. They have worked great for us the last 3 years here in E TN. They're pretty inexpensive and can be used over and over year after year. They don't work with some animals though; for instance, Shaggy (an albino skunk) and Scrappy (a skunk) are not deterred by them. Of course, they are not deterred by us either. Walk right up and by. They don't bother us and we surely don't bother them other than telling them to "go on now."

I like to dry ALL my hot w some sweet peppers , grind em up and put in a shaker for cookin - sprinkle to taste - cowboy chili and mescun vs omelet or stews, pastas and barbecue - depends on what yer cookin and a little goes a long way - about out and no peppers this year

We put cantaloupe and a few watermelon (that found a close by fence to grow up) in panty hose to hold them up and keep the weight of the fruit off of the vine. We are experimenting so far so good. Love your show and family. Be

I got out of the hospital over a week ago and had to rest and recuperate at home and because I watch Whipperwill Holler (a couple in the Arkansas hills who are also about self-sustainability and "keepers of the old ways") youtube suggested your channel. So I watched one, next thing you know I was binge-watching your channel! Oh, I just love you all! So, I'm a new subscriber and just wanted to say thank you for what you're doing (even though I worked at a garden center for about 3 years, I am learning SOOO much!) Your recipes remind me so much of my Grandma's, good homegrown Southern cooking. Yum! And I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. We live in Va and finally started getting a decent amount of rain this past week. For the cantaloupe issue you can use an old bra and place the cantaloupe in it and strap it up around the caging!
I am only doing container gardening this year, but it's been a strange growing season. All (21) tomato plants started out well and suddenly died off. I'm getting some green beans, herbs and had green onions. Thanks for sharing your gardens!

You should take out all the plants with bottom end rot. It is caused by getting the tomato leaves wet when you water them and wood mulch stays wet causing the rot to grow.
