    Sadly often the case a "can of worms gets opened". I didn't have quite the same issues, but decided on a re-paint as the 2 tone green was poorly applied way back and the original paint was coming adrift exposing the Birmabrite on the doors. It was then that the dodgy 70's repairs of lots of filler and sanding to approximate the right shape were exposed. Fortunately the job was done over 18 mths and although not concours standard it looks right and is protected for some time to come. Wishing you every success, and enjoying seeing your methodical approach to sorting it all out. Cheers

      Many thanks. I think this is going to take a while. The chassis and Splash panel area is going to take longer than I initially thought, the replacement panels don't seem to be a good fit.
      My thought is that as a hobby the tasks, although infuriating at times especially seeing supposedly professional repairs looking more like they had been done by Mickey Mouse, should be enjoyable!!!
      Love to see some pics of your car. David

    Not worked on one of theese for a long while but spent a lifetime working on old Jags and 'repairs' like these are all too common. I believe a lot of it is down to second hand sales garages basically get it fixed quick as possible and get it sold so no one has time or money to fix anything properly hence bodgery like this. What you're doing is a labour of love and you have time to correct and make good and know you made it better. My pet hate is the layers of underseal and waxoyl on these old motors. Good work and keep your mig sparkling.

      Thanks..It is a labour of love and one of my retirement projects (Lotus Elan awaits....in bits). Yes, people don't want to spend on a cheap car back then. In this case the majority of the work was carried out at a lot of money 10-15 years ago..
      Now.....where's that Grinder...

    Sorry you’re still finding problems David. I
    Know it’s all worth doing and it will be an awesome car when you’re done. Keep up the good work mate

    Keep up the good work, nothing too major, looking forward to you starting the repairs. Peop😮 make me laugh when they say there's plenty of good one's out there, I wonder how many have hidden repairs.

    I'm coming in to this a bit late, very interesting project, they're just beautiful cars and when you're done, if your opinion of them is anything like mine, the car will give back to you in spades. That access panel in the boot is an area I'd expect to see an electric points petrol pump, it's also a notorious rust point for the older p4's. My guess is that area may well have been rusted through and whoever welded it up may not have cottoned on there was or should have been an access panel.

      Thanks for the comment.They are wonderfully built cars and I am enjoying working on it. As you have seen some of the repairs are ok'ish but a lot are not good.
      I see what you mean about the access panel in the boot, I will be putting a new acmes panel in. I've tried removing the rear bumper/iron but just cannot get to the bolt to undo it. Oh well just fix the front of the car first. Lots more content to come. Cheers David

    I only had to do one rear wing on mine but both valances had lost the top flange. Looks as though your near side valance might need a bit of love. They are simply bolted to flang on wing but iirc removal was only achieved with ginder. Yours were probably off when the arches were done so they may be easy.
    Keep up the good work.

      Thanks, I'll see if there's more corrosion when I've stripped it a bit further. I may be able to get away with making a small repair patch, otherwise its buying a panel...

      @davidbaugh If you buy in a panel choose carefully. I hated my replacements which changed the appearance of the rear end but having spent the money and time in fitting....

      Thanks. I bought two splash panels and they don't appear to be dimensionally the same as the ones on the car. The O/S was replaced, badly, and the fitment is going to be a pain (upcoming video) and the N/S looks to be original and again is not a good fit.
      Anm I right in saying there is only one source of panels.

      @davidbaugh
      I made my own splash panels, but there is a fairly large tolerance between panel and wing filled with profiled rubber strip. So the dims of the splash panel are not citical.

      Ahhhhh of course forgot about the weather strip. I just put the two panels together....quite a difference.

    My sympathies, David. I bet you wish you'd never set eyes on that car. It just doesn't seem worth the effort when there are so many decent ones around. Sorry to be a bit negative but it's just my take on the situation😐

      I must say I could have made a better purchase and It's not gone the way I anticipated. However, if I sold it or parted it out, I wouldn't get my money back and it would be another one gone.
      I see this as a challenge and I quite enjoy the restoration work that's ahead of me. I'll be keeping a tally of the restoration costs and cove that in a future video and, gulp!!! what I paid for it.

    Is it worth it, is it worth it to rip all that out only to replace it. I've looked at your early pics and the rear wings didn't look that bad . I would do the chassis repairs and leave the rear wings till later.

    • @davidbaugh
      @davidbaugh  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn't think they looked bad either but, I had to look at the obvious areas of rust and then found the repair, so had to chase it. The chassis repairs are first, then the splash panel areas and then the rear wings. I've got to repair them properly knowing they are so bad.
