Also a fun fact: Dream Girl is the song with most music show wins for SHINee! I believe it was because of this song that a music show put a ban that one song could only win 3 times in a row!

You can't do a react to it, but for personal viewing, there's a great performance of Dream Girl on one of the music shows where Minho breaks the mic prop early on, and the entire band covers for him--someone kicks the stand over to the back of the stage, Key puts the fake speaker in the pocket of his blazer, Jinki kicks the base of the stand away--and then at the end when Jonghyun is supposed to stand in the middle and everyone moves around him with the stands, he gives his to Minho so the move is uninterrupted. But the whole thing is done so smoothly, you genuinely don't notice the mistake. And there's video of them talking about it later, and Taemin didn't even realize anything had happened. It speaks to their professionalism and training that they were able to think on their feet so quickly.
Thanks for this RJ! LOVE your videos always, you're such a thoughtful reactor. And you're in for a treat with Everybody next!! Arguably the most intense dance in kpop and one of the great dance practices too.

😌 SHINee content soothes the soul.
There is a legendary live performance of Dream Girl on Mnet K-pop. You never notice it at first because of how fast it is, but Minho's mic stand broke into 3 pieces and the members noticed and casually flung each piece to the side while preforming between dance moves. Professionalism at its finest. They never missed a beat.

I confused Key and Onew a lot when I first became a Shawol (only a year ago!) But then, I watched Key's "Born to Shine"... and I never confused them again ;)

The reason dance practices were legit dance practices is because these were filmed to monitor themselves. They look at the recordings and then correct movements. The reason they started uploading was to showcase the choreo and the behind the scenes, yes, but it was never intended to be a produced video. As dance practices became more popular they changed... we now even have whole programs that are dedicated to showcasing dance (ahem Studio Choom). I think the real dance practice uploads are dying 😅

"Why So Serious?" also came out in 2013, and yes, right before SHINee were to start promotions for the song, Jonghyun was in a car accident and he broke his nose. His face was all bruised up. So SM decided it would be better for him to take some time to heal. But instead of postponing their promotion schedule, including the already planned MV shoot -- which would have cost them a lot of money to do so, among other things -- SM decided to shoot the MV with only 4 members.
So, in the MV Taemin covers Jonghyun's parts, including his lines in the song -- just like Taemin now covers most of the parts that probably would have been Jonghyun's in all of their new songs, such as the main high notes. (Taemin is the main vocalist in this MV and the first one you see and hear with the brassy orange/blond hair. Key is the one with the bright bleach blond hair.) Jonghyun was Taemin's vocal coach and he helped teach Taemin how to sing, so Taemin's voice matches Jonghyun's voice the most out of all the members, so that is why he is the one to take over the majority of Jonghyun's parts in SHINee's songs.
However, if you listen to the studio recording from their album, you will hear that Jonghyun is part of the official track. It was a few weeks into their promotions before Jonghyun was back to promoting this song, but if you watch one of their last weeks of their live comeback performances or any of their concert performances of this song you will get to see him in the song. You really should check out a live performance because you will discover that the song is even better with all 5 of their voices. Here's a performance from their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) in Seoul from 2016: th-cam.com/video/Io5MXNwioT4/w-d-xo.html.
Fun fact: The choreography for this song is actually known as the zombie dance. And the song is a sort of zombie love story -- about being brought back to life by love. Because you appreciate their dancing, you should check out a video where SHINee does a tutorial and breaks down the choreography and teaches you the moves for "Why so Serious?". th-cam.com/video/9g-jyp8cEWg/w-d-xo.html. And you also should check out both dance practices: This is the version with 4 members: th-cam.com/video/IzweUc13iao/w-d-xo.html and here is the version with all 5 of them th-cam.com/video/ZAILvhe5GNs/w-d-xo.html
Next to R&B, Rock is one of SHINee's best song styles. And nothing compares to SHINee's live performances.
    :D
It still baffles me how SM ever thought they could turn these guys into a hip-hop group. I am so glad they changed their minds, because SHINee's whole purpose in life would have been lost if we had missed out on songs like this one. :D
And as others may have mentioned, the girl in this song is Irene from Red Velvet. She was in this MV even before Red Velvet debuted.
And that's just a security guard, not the police. The guard heard some noise while making his rounds and came to check to see what's going on. ;p lol When the guard finally makes it to the room to see what is happening, the SHINee members have disappeared, so he is shocked because all he sees is Irene dancing all by herself in the room. He thinks all that commotion he heard was coming from one little girl listening to a CD. Little did he know that she was having a full on dance party with a group of cute zombie boys right before that.

1:20 yeah SM's signature for music videos is having their groups dance in a futuristic looking box for some reason, so its okay nobody will think you're saying they copied 💀 i believe dream girl was released the year after sherlock
why so serious is one of my favorites i looove the rock sound. especially live this song goes so hard, taemins sort of raspy voice goes perfectly with the genre as well + the chanting/singing together parts really makes the song for me!

2013 was an amazing era for SHINee, Dream Girl, Why So Serious, Everybody and Colourful all in one year, so many different genres. I also love how unpolished their dance practises are. You seem to be getting the hang of Key vs Onew just fine, I'm sure that soon you'll wonder how you ever mixed them up. The pop punk styling and sound in WSS is perfection, the lyrics are actually a zombie love story! You can see references to the theme in the choreography, very Thriller-esque. It's such an underrated title track but it's one of my favourites. There's an incredible ot5 live concert version other people have linked.
The music video for Key's single Hate That is out! He also has four other solo music videos - Forever Yours ft Soyou (Sistar), One Of Those Nights ft Crush (RnB soloist), Cold ft Hanhae (rapper) and I Wanna Be ft Soyeon (G-Idle). They were all released after SHINee's Story of Light promotions in 2018 which would be the end of your journey in terms of full group music videos, maybe you could check out Key's music once you've caught up with SHINee's? My bias is showing in asking but I really do think you would enjoy his stuff! He was just on Jessi's Showterview and they had hilarious chemistry!

Many later idol groups have borrowed SHINee's concepts. I can think of four that even BTS borrowed. This is why it annoys me when reactors and fans of 3rd and 4th gen groups don't bother to check out the foundation of Kpop - 1st & 2nd gen! If they did, they would realize how integral those earlier groups really were to the growth of Kpop.
The whole "Dream Girl" MV was supposed to represent them in a dream with their dream girl. Taemin's pencil pants were, and still are iconic. In the DP, yes that was Taemin in the blue, unbuttoned shirt with the tan shirt underneath and the blue jeans. He twirled the hand-held mic several times.
Oh, you really need to do the SWC V live performance of "Why So Serious" with Jonghyun. It's so iconic and FUN and the harmonies are nuts. Yes, Jonghyun was in a car accident, and Taemin covered his vocal parts as well as his own. A year later, Taemin became SM's first male soloist from an active boy group.
Key also just did an interview with Jessi, and that was just as hilarious. Key is such a diva that Jessi didn't quite know what to do with him.
As far as a guide goes, this one is the most popular and has some very good info: th-cam.com/video/ctIp6XGCK7E/w-d-xo.html Then there's this updated one (2021) on each of the members the members: th-cam.com/video/tzY2neAnU88/w-d-xo.html (I chose this one because it's only 17 mins. There are a couple other 2021 guides, but they are 25 to 39 minutes.)

agree with you on 3rd or 4th gen fans discounting 2nd gen idols. if you look at the history of idols, 2nd gen artists paved the way for international recognition for kpop. Shinee was even recognized by then president Barack Obama. Honestly 2nd gen for me is still the standard.
p.s. i'm not discounting the achievements of 3rd or 4th gen. i love several artists in this generstion it's just that their fans are too toxic sometimes.

SHINee is an inspiration to many groups to this day, but none is brave enough to experiment with costumes and music the way SHINee does. They are both fun and elegant. Do you know how fun it was to watch them do push-ups after winning against "Dream Girl".

  • @milindawilson9175
    @milindawilson9175 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

SHINee's "Dream Girl" came out in 2013. The song is called "Dream Girl" so the whole MV is a dream sequence. That is why the set looks like the room has been tipped on its side. It's also why the one set has the floor behind them and it looks like they are dancing on the walls. That's why you see the video glitches and why they are jumping and falling from the ceilings and walls and why you see Onew roll down the wall, etc.
Their outfits are mismatched patterns and styles -- and Taemin's pants look like two No. 2 pencils (pink eraser, green metal band and yellow pencil) -- because it's a dream and not everything has to make sense in a dream. (This was another of SHINee's very iconic looks, and it's one of the things that makes SHINee, SHINee.)
You can't see the girl's face because she is a "dream girl." It doesn't matter what she looks like because Shawols are SHINee's dream girls. (Shawols are supposed imagine ourselves as the "dream girl" SHINee is talking about.) So the girl represents all their fans. That is why all the scenes are the way they are because it's a dream so anything can happen.
You should really check out their live stage for "Dream Girl" -- the mic stand choreography is legend and, like SHINee, it was so unique for its time and unlike anything anyone had done up until then. Just another example of what makes SHINee pure greatness and why they are considered one of the best when it comes to their vocals and dancing. :D
There is even an iconic moment in one of their MCountdown comeback stages for "Dream Girl" where Minho's mic stand breaks in the middle of the dance and the way they all improvised and kept on dancing just shows how skilled and professional they are. Check out an episode of the variety show Beatles Code 2 where they talk about it. I love this episode of the show because it has so many iconic SHINee moments. I think you will enjoy watching it. Part 1: th-cam.com/video/8RmY4_kFDes/w-d-xo.html and Part 2: th-cam.com/video/vdhyeOz9Yj8/w-d-xo.html (Just so you know, the other guests on the show are members of the iconic first generation boy group G.O.D. and Shindong, one of the members of Super Junior, is one of the hosts of the show. The concept of this variety show is The Beatles "Yellow Submarine" theme. So that is why the hosts are dressed the way they are, they are supposed to look like the members of The Beatles.)
All of SHINee's voices are very unique. Once you get to know their voices you will always be able to pick them out of a crowd just by the sound of their voice. Most fans will tell you, we know who is speaking or singing within 1 second even with our eyes closed, with them standing in a crowd of screaming fans. I can always tell whose voice I am hearing even if it's a brand new song that I have never heard before, they each have such distinct voices -- there is no one with a voice like any of theirs.
In the dance practice, Taemin is the one with the Jean Jacket who does the mic tricks by flipping the mic. Taemin is always the one that does something just a little extra in the choreography.

Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. I am so excited to start watching ur Shinee content. I recently got to watch a reaction with all the MVs. So i am halfway caught up i think. But now its relisten time. Plus, I love to hear what u think of each song. Taemin bias here and OT5. Dream Girl is catchy i like it. I am not sure i love the MV for it though. BTS has a song were they use mic stands as part of the choreo so i think that's a Shinee inspo thing. Glad ur recognising Key now. Happy u watched the dance practice. Such a unique use of props. These days not many groups use props. They are really hard to work with. Yep, Taemin was the guy with the jean blue shirt and pants. Why So Serious? is not for me. Key is a good dance. He had moves in this. =0} Great vocals. Hugs. -NY USA 2019 Army💟

Love your Shinee reactions like always! I personally never confused Onew and Key but I saw a lot of other reactors have the same problem especially watching older stuff lol. But you did really well by going by their voices. That was always spot on. If the hair isn't in the way you can easily make out Key by his eyebrow scar. He got it because of an accident as a kid and it's his trademark ever since.
I already mentioned these guides in a previous videos but since you mentioned reacting to one the next time I will leave them here again 😊

    th-cam.com/video/PDsPZXuahjA/w-d-xo.html
(The quality is really bad but it wasn't posted by sm so I still appreciate it lol)
And this one is with just 4 members
    th-cam.com/video/IzweUc13iao/w-d-xo.html
(Again bad quality lol and watermarked 😬)
I don't know why sm didn't post the dance practice themselves but I thank whoever did lol
Also I don't know how true this is but someone once said that the reason why they film the dance practices is because they send those videos to the tv broadcast stations so that they know how to set up their cameras and stuff to capture the performance as best as possible. I think that's why they filmed a second dance practice for Why So Serious since the choreo changed a bit when Jonghyun couldn't participate anymore.

Dream Girl Dance Practice: Taemin in blue, Key in shorts, Onew has large lettering on his shirt, Jonghyun in black and jacket has white stripes, Minho in black with yellow-ish shoes. Don't worry if you get any of them mixed up. We know you love them and that means you'll watch enough of their work to easily tell them apart at some point. Plus the quality of the vid on the DP is horrible. Here's the link to the real (but also low-quality) DP vid for Why So Serious: th-cam.com/video/IzweUc13iao/w-d-xo.html
