      I’ve seen mixed about squeezing it but I don’t see why not as you get the last of the good juices 😊

    Hands down the best beginner brewing video I've seen on here. Other videos are so hell- bent on mash temps and having tons of expensive equipment. I often wondered if that truly made a difference, considering our ancestors were brewing beer long before formal brewing equipment supplies came around. I'll check out the other videos made here as well. Thank you master brewer!

      After 30 years of brewing, I can brew in a Homedepot bucket, or a stainless conical. The difference comes down to how easy having quality equipment can make the day, and how the equipment reacts and lasts to repeated use (plastic scratches and harbors germs than can nuke future brews).
      Now, having 10k in brewing equipment, and multiple blue ribbons, I can say that a guy buddy of mine makes an ale in a plastic bucket that is better than mine....

      If you like home brew, you'll never go back to cans! Compare store bought to extract... Whole grains are so much better! Add fresh hops and liquid yeast instead of dry, you'll be hooked for life!

    Good video, I found it informative anyway. I'm new to all this and just making my way into using grains, so I find it encouraging to see someone say it's ok to steam ahead... even if all the conditions you have aren't perfect.

    Really useful and crystal clear runthrough of the brew bag method. I am used to borrowing some expensive equipment like steel pot with a tap and fixed bottom filter. But the bag makes it really easy and clean especially when you do the second draft.

    Haven't tried the no sparge method, I think I might attempt this tomorrow instead of a BIAB mash out. Not chilling your beer fast enough is quite concerning though. All the information I have discovered advises that you cool your wort within 40-60min due to bacteria growth. I understand that you'll probably be fine but contamination prevention is important and you can cool your wort with ice and a sink.

    • @mashhacks
      @mashhacks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally we add the wort to a sealed container, since it's still so hot, most stuff is killed. Can go for months without needing to ferment.

    Ben, I really enjoyed this video. You described each step very clearly, and you introduced me to a couple methods that I’ve never encountered before, eg, rinsing your grains in a separate bucket of cold water and letting your wort cool overnight to room temperature. Well done!
    I have a couple questions with regard to BIAB. Can I combine BIAB with a cooler mash tun, which has the false bottom for lautering the wort? It seems to me that this combination would make things simpler and it would filter the grains from the wort more effectively. What do you think? Also, would you recommend standard milling with this set up? Thank you.

    • @mashhacks
      @mashhacks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cheers :) You absolutely can use a cooler mash tun with false bottom, but then you don't need the bag. That's just regular mashing and lautering! The bag is just a replacement for a false bottom and a second vessel.
      As far as milling, if you use a false bottom you should use as fine a crush as you can without getting the mash stuck. I know it's a cop-out answer, but you'll have to experiment. I'd start with a medium-to-fine crush and compensate by using more grain. Keep knocking down the gap in your mill until you get a mash efficiency of around 75-80%. This is usually a pretty good balance.

    Great video mate! Can you answer a question at a beginner level for me, please? When you have a stockpot, you won't fill it to the top for safety and pouring reasons. Once everybody works out their max water level (and therefore volume), what is the simplest way to find out how much grain to add to the pot for a beer that is made to style and allows for the volume of grain that will be added to the pot?

    Aeration is important, if your wort has no oxygen the yeast will not multiply, the wort will have to be totally fermented by the yeast that you pitch.

    You didn't oxygenate the wort before pitching the yeast? Is that not needed? I brew a double sometimes triple IPA and I was told that with all that malt I will need as much O2 as I can dissolve in the wort to get it to ferment out... I use pure O2 and a stone / bubbler... waiting overnight to chill is interesting, I've always chilled it down first to around 75 - 80 F then pitched after adding O2... then 14 days in the primary fermenter and then another 14 days in the secondary, then bottling with dextrose to add the CO2....

    Hi, nice and very helpfull video for beginners thank you very much.. I am gonna brew my first all grain beer soon but chilling the wort is scaring me since i couldn't afford to buy copper chilling tubes. So that i am very excited to see that you use no chill method. Can you honestly tell me that if there is not a big taste difference with chilling or not chilling...
