This reminded me of back when I was a little girl of about 7 or 8 years old and still lived in Zimbabwe and my mum got these lodgers, a husband and wife and their 5 year old son. Everything was good until pretty much every night we would hear the wife begging her husband "please don't hit me again, please don't hurt me. I'm sorry, please don't hit me. not to hit her, not to hurt her". He came home drunk most nights and would take out his frustrations on her whilst their son was watching. It was so awful. One night, my mum intervened and all hell broke lose. The wife was defending her husband and telling my mum she should leave him alone. He started trying to beat up my mum too so she locked us in her bedroom but he kicked and kicked the door until there was a massive gaping hole in the middle. For some reason he stopped before completely destroying the door and walked away. Mum opened the door and told me to stay in the room, but I didn't stay. I followed her and watched as this man very nearly pushed my mum down the stairs. I was so scared and so angry I wanted to kill him. They ended up downstairs and he was just destroying my mum's property. He ended up outside and mum locked him out. He climbed up the drain pipe and tried to get in the house through the toilet window but mum caught him and closed the window and he fell. He was fine, didn't even get hurt. Mum called the police and we all ended up at the police station for a few hours whilst the police took statements from mum and his wife. They kept him in the cell overnight and we all went back home. He came home the next day with a hangover and apologised to my mum. Shortly after that my mum told them to move out of her house and they did. About two months later I was reading the newspaper as I always did and came across a story about a man who died in a car accident and when I saw the name I knew it was the wife beater and I showed my mum. We were both glad that he was dead.
Wow, I'm touched and in tears, she is a beautiful singer. The message is powerful and the man who loves you will protect you will never want to hurt you, takes care of you and nurtures you. Don't wait until it happens for the 2nd or 3rd time. So much to all the strong women!
There is a saying ethi "Do not tell me how easy it is to leave an abusive relationship if you have never been in one". It is not easy to leave after the first slap. So stop asking us abused women questions like "Why didnt you leave in the first incident?" It is just not easy but we end up leaving when they have damaged us, our future, our relationship with family and friends and some leave after he has also damaged their life and careers. The pain runs deep and I doubt it will go away any time soon. Thank you Cici for an amazing song, it helps with the healing process (I am not talking about the physical, visible scars but the emotional and psychological scars) as we feel inferior after the abuse.
