The reasons why it is difficult to understand some native English speakers :
    1) They talk funny 2) They speak quickly 3) They combine words 4) They have regional accents 5) They use slang 6) They don't speak classroom English 7) They use age communication 8) Their grammar is informal
    9) Their pronunciation is not clear 10) They use phrasal verbs / idioms

most of the points are found in learning any language. So you find it useful if english is the FIRST foraigner language you deal with. BUT, what it really stands out is the difference in accents in great britain, the difference between GB and the USA(whose regional accents are quite soft) and the main factor: the distance between writen and spoken english. I would add the the tendency speaking quite informal in the USA even in quite formal or professional enviroments.

Mollie Tai You forgot to say they speak incorrectly by pronouncing the words wrong and using a bad gramma, just like me do in english.
This happen mainly in the USA and in Africa.

I speak English fluently now (Or so I'd like to think) and I learned most of my formal and correct English from watching TV shows and movies in English with closed captions. That actually helped me develop my current American accent that I have, to the point where many young people when I was younger used to tell me I sounded "too White". As I became older and became exposed to real English speakers, I noticed that most people, especially here in NYC, actually speak very colloquial and many times, grammatically incorrect English. I started to become more familiarized with slang, local words and they slowly started to seep into my own speech. Now, instead of saying "isn't" sometimes I say "ain't" instead of saying "ask" sometimes I say "aks" instead of saying "I think so" sometimes I say "ah think so", for "you all" I say "y'all". I am fully aware these are only incorrect and colloquial ways of saying it and most of the time I am very conscious when I say it and when to use it and around whom but sometimes, my "New York-ness" takes over and I speak incorrect colloquial English, especially when I'm stressed out or speak with someone who speaks in urban vernacular or has a heavy NY accent but when I am at work and I am explaining something to a client, I speak correct standard English. I also speak slower and more clearly when I am speaking with an ESL person with flimsy English skills. I currently have some sort of hybrid White/African American New York accent when I speak English as I do work with mostly African American people and have for more than 13 years, not to mention, I attended college for an additional four years with many of them. I am actually quite proud of my accent. Most people can't even tell I'm Latino when I speak over the phone as I made sure I eliminated that accent completely while learning English.

    • @jsphat81
      @jsphat81 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

+Shabbir khan Watch TV and movies in English with closed captions so you can read what they are saying while you speak, then try watching the same TV show and movie, this time without the caption and see how much you understand. Also, speak as often as possible with native speakers. Listen to English music with the lyrics as well. Those are just some tips.

5 common reasons why it's hard to understand Native English Speakers:
    1. Pronunciation
    2. They combine words together
    3. They speak so fast that you feel words are cut off
    4. They use a lot of phrasal verbs
    5. They use a lot of idioms/slangs
I wish that everybody speaks like you lol. Good video thanks

Hi, I am a native eater of Nutella ( that is, italian). Maybe because for you non-native speakers=immigrants. If like me you are a native speaker of a romance language and you have learned english reading books and newspaper, it is just the opposite, formal english is easier ( and more latinate). Bigger bitch are phrasal verbs, idiomatic and slang you can learn, but PV are also difficult to remember.

Regarding "classroom English": well, almost half a century ago, in my high school in Zagreb, Croatia (then Yugoslavia) we used to stage little sketches lifted from TV sitcoms (both British and American), but also did Shakespearian dialogues. Our lecturer went to great pains to point to us the differences between various versions of formal English as well as different vernaculars and accents. Perhaps I was just lucky to have an exceptionally good teacher, but I certainly was not taught "We write?" I hope your objectives here are more ambitious than "We write?"

I like when you said, "Do you follow me here?", as a question that a native speaker would know that you did not mean to literally follow you around, but whether or not they understood your question. I've worked with English as a 2nd language students, and sometimes they do tend to struggle because of the natural way native speakers use English. Mostly they just nod their heads because they do not understand and do not want to be seen as "stupid". I always tell them, if they don't understand, don't hesitate to stop and ask for clarification.

100 percent agree. a good example to me (I'm Spanish) are movies and TV shows. I push myself to watch Netflix in English to improve my listening, it's freaking frustrating, because normally I can only catch isolated words and phrases, but cant't follow the dialogs. So I must rely in english subtitles.

Nobody can learn much English from a book- all books do is confuse the hell out of students with demented spelling rules that always have exceptions, and horrible, intimidating grammar that no English speaker worries about too much. Just relax, most people are patient if you fumble around trying to say what you're thinking, and won't worry if you mess up the grammar or pronunciation.
I'll tell you a secret: English grammar is so flexible that no matter how you mess it up, you can usually be understood.. Watch lots of TV, that gets you acclimatized to the speech patterns and slang expressions ( of which there are thousands).
English is spoken by a billion people, and every English -speaking country has its own varieties, so there is NOT one way to speak the language- they are ALL equally valid. Forget about your accent, because it doesn't matter. To my ears, the most incomprehensible English speakers are the Scots ( some of them) and English is their native language!
The other secret is to cease wondering "WHY??" about the spelling. We all know it's insane, and there is NO reason for its craziness except that we don't have enough letters in the alphabet to express all the sounds.
Go on, dive in! The water is warm and the locals are friendly!
Good luck. I wish you well, because I've done a few languages and know how hard it can be.

Watching movies with English subtitles is good in the beginning, but later it can slow down your progress, as you get used to rely on your reading skills instead of listening skills. So, as long, as you are comfortable with subtitles, turn them off and try to rely only on your listening skills. Also, I noticed that my listening skills get worse when I'm tired, so, it's, obviously, not a good time to listen to hard English accents.

I like watching vlogs to improve it, I can understand kind of 50%/70% but I think my problem it is the phrasal verbs, Americans natives speakers use them often. Cya, teacher.
