    This is a tricky dynamic for a couple of reasons: First, Nora is angry at Iris now for something Iris hasn't actually done yet because she hasn't become a mother yet. Second, we don't know why Iris will act that way in the future (all speculation aside). Iris can't defend herself because she doesn't know why she will do what she did in Nora's timeline. I understand why Nora feels the way she does, but given what we know about Iris, and how quickly she has warmed to the idea of being a mother now, it is very likely the only reason Iris will block Nora's powers would be to protect her. One way or another, I think everyone will come to that conclusion even if they disagree with it.

    I kinda agree with Iris on this point. Being a speedster is complicated and dangerous. Barry right off the bat when he becomes speedster is dealing with consequences from choices he hasn't even made yet due to time travel. He has to deal with a speedster who kills other speedsters and future evil time remnants. Barry was an adult when he faced all of this and even then, in the end he vanishes and never returns home. Had Nora's power's manifested at a young age, she would not have been ready to deal with them and the consequences and responsibilities that come with them. More than that, Iris saw what happened to her husband and possibly the greatest speedster in the multiverse just because he was a speedster and a hero. Had Barry been around in the future to train Nora, then possibly there would be no need for power dampening, but the way Nora acts even now shows she's not nearly responsible or careful as she should be, even with Barry there to guide her.

      Barry also has a very strong support system and still makes stupid decisions. Iris may have been not only worrying about how to parent a speedster, something not even Joe had to do as Barry didn't have those powers yet, but also not having the infrastructure to protect Nora. If your super hero husband disappears, the Legends and others can't catch a killer, what would you feel like as a single mom who is a reporter with no super powers knowing your daughter will be a target her entire life? Her decision, depending on how the story is fleshed out, doesn't seem like a dumb or selfish reason, more like a scared but smart woman doing what she feels like she has to do to protect her child.

So either Iris did things way wrong, and handled whatever happened in the future very badly or Nora is being manipulated to think the worse of her mom. In either case, Barry and Iris should not have told Nora it was OK to suppress her powers without knowing the facts, and just assume Iris can do no wrong. Iris could change and make poor decisions (even with the best intentions). The Iris of today will not be the same Iris of 25 years from now, so they should've talked it over with Nora and not just assume they are on the right always.

    I understand both sides. Iris was just trying to protect her daughter from the same kind of life that took the love of her life away from her, but at the same time, you took a crucial part of her identity, the part that came from her father, away from her. Just like how Nora is the last thing that Barry left you with after Crisis, her speed is the last thing that he left Nora. So I truly understand both sides, but i think resonate with Iris more.

      It's because the writers finally found a way to write her character well for an episode and let the actors act without trying to rush the scenes. Candice Patton is a good actress and when given good material can do a great job. In fact, most of them can act well but the show is so busy rushing from one scene to the next they barely give them a chance to act.

    I like this argument because both sides have a point. But I am on the side of Nora overall. Its not even that Iris suppressed Nora's powers, but the fact that she didn't tell her for over 20 years. Nora is an adult now and she only found out 6 months ago and not even from Iris. That is an incredibly personal violation even from a parent. If the reasoning given is that Iris is afraid to lose Nora after having lost Barry, then that only makes her immediate action understandable, not the secret hiding part. If it turns out to be something else, like Nora's powers being harmful to her or that metas are persecuted in the future, then I think Iris' point will be in better standing.

    I've made a statement in a reply that regardless of Iris's reason for suppressing Nora's powers but if it was 25 years after Barry disappeared and Nora was maybe 3 then, then she would be late twenties, the latest Iris was justified not telling Nora was age 21, for the better part of a decade Iris was making a choice that was no longer hers and from the way Nora said it she hadn't indicated any intent to reveal the truth.
    Also to people who are saying 'oh but past Iris hasn't done anything yet' a common time travel thing is that when you see someone who hasn't betrayed you or hurt you yet you cannot dissociate them from what they will do. In universe we've seen the whole crew distrustful of Harry, and most Wellses for that matter because of Thawne, who wasn't even the real Earth 1 Harrison Wells, who they are the counterpart to. And considering how big a betrayal Nora clearly saw it, can you really expect her not to react that way. It's a big problem with fandoms in general, Nora, Star Lord, etc, we often criticize characters for acting with emotion and not reacting with the same detachment we can have because it's not our lives.

  • @janebloomington
    @janebloomington 5 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    Of course, I can see both sides of the argument. However, Nora is acting like an immature little brat. Sorry not sorry. Sure, Future Iris probably should have told her about her powers once she became an adult. I can understand why Nora feels betrayed, but there is more to it than just Nora's feelings here. Before Nora came of age, I wholeheartedly believe Iris did the right thing to dampen her powers. A lot of people in the comments here are bypassing one tiny little detail - we don't know if Wally is around in the future. We don't know where he is or if he even comes back, so there goes the only other speedster who could have helped her learn how to control her powers. So, who would have been around to even help Nora with her powers had she found about before she became an adult? Some people really think a 16-year-old would have been emotionally stable enough to handle such power. There's no way anyone truly believes that. Can you imagine a horrmonal, angst-ridden teenager with speedster powers running around? Yeah, that would have been a HORRIBLE idea. To be honest, imagining a speedster child is just as bad, if not worse. Especially since it appears that it's just Future Iris doing all of this on her own anyway.
    I think people are allowing their own personal hatred for Iris blind them to logic and reason. Yeah, we get it. You all hate Iris. But are you guys seriously saying that Iris made such a dire mistake as a parent trying to protect her child? Really? It's not even like Future Iris did this with malicious intent. We don't know much about Future Iris, but I highly doubt she would do anything to hurt her family, regardless of what certain fans may think. She did with what she needed to do as a single parent with a missing husband and a baby with speedster powers. I stand behind Iris.

So she did what parent or Mother would is go to any length to protect her family and the ppl she loves! She couldn't bare losing her daughter too and even though it was wrong to do, she was making sure that history doesn't repeat it self and she end up losing Nora too! That's a mother for you, Mother's will go to back for there children and family and Nora gotta reconisder that, and not let her anger blind side her. • @Xenvex
    @Xenvex 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Looking at the comments, I saw a lot of people agree with Iris which I thought was pretty weird. OK yeah, she loses barry in the future because of his powers and that ends up hurting her a lot. But, think about what Nora actually says, she ends up growing up feeling different from other people, almost alienated from everyone else around her and she has no clue why. The isolation she must've experienced really put her through some tough times. Looking to her mother for comfort she ends up realizing that the whole reason she was experiencing this pain was because of her mother. A mother who yeah, lost her husband because of powers, but a mother who should've been reliable for her own daughter. A daughter who had her choice taken away from her.
    In the end, Iris justifies this by her fear of losing her the same way she loses Barry, but in the end she also risks losing Nora not because of some supernatural ability, but because of her own decisions.
    In the future, Iris lets tragedy define her actions, which ultimately ends up going against what Barry, as the Flash, stood for. Hope.
    Hope that her daughter would be able to grow up with her powers and be comfortable in herself.
    Hope that she would be a good person and do the right thing.
    Hope that she would be better than her father and even maybe use her powers in the future to find him.
    I know a lot of people won't agree with me, but it always feels like when someone in these shows/stories "Do something in order to protect the ones they love" it always ends up backfiring and hurting everyone more than if they didn't do it in the first place.

    I can see how Iris would want to do anything to protect Nora, who wouldn't protect their kid, but I'm more on Nora's side on this one though, not because I hate Iris, which I very much dislike her character consistently throughout the show, but that ain't the reason in this instance, for those who in the comments saying that it was a good thing for future Iris to do these things to Nora in the future, is wrong, because Nora lost her dad, and so its only natural for a kid to want to meet their lost parent, especially in this instance where Iris, in Nora's eyes, was basically controlling her, and effectively pushing her away when in the healthy alternative was to explain to Nora the why on her be abnormally protective, and eventually Nora discovers her suppressed abilities and decides to go back in time and effect the timeline(saving her dad, and other things), so in my eyes it was a bit of both good and bad, where yes it was terrible, but then conveniently enough its what drove Nora to go back in time, and in turn saving Barry and effectively changing the timeline, so its more or less both sides aren't entirely right or wrong.
    I would've done the exact same thing if I were in Nora's shoes, because no kid should have an ability and go on in life and not be aware of it due to a parent essentially blocking his/her potential all on the account of be protective, because it seems contradictory to the point of protecting a child when it is effectively hurting them, and keeping them from their full potential. I can't deny that I hate the character(Iris), I never really liked her, I do not see any chemistry between her and Barry in any point of time throughout the course of the show, I see tons of chemistry between Allen and Snow, which I understand that they seem more or less bro & sis, but then in season 2 patty came in and I seen more chemistry, and to be honest I see Barry and Iris more like bro & sis a lot more than I see Allen and Snow as that. But fine, that isn't a thing in the comics you got me there, but Patty though I'd rather see Allen & S.(Forgot how to spell her last name, Patty) be together, because there is a hell of a lot more chem between them. But my point is the idea of suppressing a kid's abilities whatever the case is(in this case a speedster) from being able to use there abilities or at the very least talking to them about it and explaining what the deal is on why they are doing what they are doing. Again I see the reasoning behind it, but at the same time its wrong for suppressing a child's ability in any case.
    Look back in S1 with Joe and Barry, I understood the why, but it was wrong for Joe at that time too, but then Joe realized he screwed up and fixed it, and now its similar(not the exact same thing but similar), and now Nora should acknowledge the reason behind Iris's suppressive behavior. I'd say Iris should apologize but Iris already did, but at the same time it didn't make much sense because she doesn't even know the why, and with Barry, what the H* Barry, you of all people should understand what Nora is going through not kissing Iris's behind, hell you did the exact same thing a while back you should've been way more understanding, at to those whose saying "Barry ain't taking sides", yeah whatever dude, he is definitely taking a side, and it's Iris's, Barry didn't even acknowledges Nora's point of view, which is really silly, but okay then. Again I see the reason behind Iris's actions I really do, I hate to admit it, but I do, but it was a drastic step from Joe's Protective nature, but I do see the why, but the thing that bothers me is the drastic step, going so far as to not acknowledging Nora's desires, and having a sit down with her explaining why, rather than just being a douche and suppressing her abilities through artificial means. There could have been a way better approach to handling that situation, a much healthier way to move past it and everything.

      Personally, to me, Nora isn't mad at Iris for trying to protect her, just like she said she was mad because Iris never told her. She even said that she felt "controlled" through her entire life which is a bad thing. Everyone knows that Iris isn't perfect parent like everyone else and yes, other characters can make mistakes. A thing about this show, never someone confronted Iris about her mistakes. While Caitlin & Cisco still have life issues. what I find silly is that Barry should've talked to Nora and shouldn't have taken iris side, in fact, Barry's best thing to do is talk to both and try to connect both of their issues. In S4, we saw an Iris who lost barry for a couple months, and acted like an entire b*** for everyone else, judging Caitlin for leaving, and talking crap to cisco because he actually believed Barry could come back, (the only ones who tried to actually do something to bring Barry back) Then just imagine that Iris always being mean to Nora, and talking to her like crap. What Nora is doing to Iris, is what IRIS did to Nora her entire life. Lying, talking like crap to her and constantly judging her for everything.

    It’s funny how everyone is saying Nora is hasty and reckless... the fact that she has no experience can actually be the reason why she is that way... she was never given a different choice, her mother took that away from her, or she might have turned out differently.... u can protect by making them strong enough to protect themselves rather than, push them down and make them hide behind u until u suddenly die or leave and then they are left vulnerable to the world!

    I would have to agree with Iris. You really don't even have to talk to future Iris to know why she did that to Nora. Barry dies while trying to save the world. And if he dies, there is nobody to teach Nora how to be a speedster. So, it only makes sense for Iris to dampen her powers. Iris just didn't want Nora to die while trying to save someone. Nora is all Iris has in the future.

    I am surprised Nora has not caused WW3 yet. She's hinted at Ryan Choi replacing Ray Palmer, suggested that Cisco might die in the future, turned Cicada into a different person by time traveling, gave the Flash a suit from the future, flirted with others girls from the past, told Iris what she *does* in the future, tried to kill her father in the past which would erase her from existence...she seriously makes Marty Mcfly look like the most competent time traveler ever!

    I'm with Nora on this one. Suppressing her powers isn't that bad in the first place but keeping it a secret is a bad mistake. Especially since Nora found out about it not from her mom. I understand the concept of protecting her daughter from the same fate of which Barry had in the future but think about this, it must've hurt so much that Nora never knew her dad to begin with. She only knew him through the flash museum, and to think that she had no similarities to him in terms of superpowers that must've killed her inside. And then promptly knowing she did har powers, that obviously caused the hate she has for Iris now. In my perspective, at least Iris should've let her know that she had powers and was similar to her dad. Should've guided her better that way, and then at least she would've had a choice to make. Being an adult, Nora should've had a choice to use her powers or not. Something like letting her know she had powers when she was young and letting her decide when she gets 18. That wouldn't have caused her to travel to the past. Because she knows herself now, and that she has a few guidelines to follow and not being a fuck up speedster like her dad.

      What if she had powers as a baby. She could speed away into the middle of traffic or into a pool and Iris would be nowhere around. What she did wrong was not tell her when she was like 17 or 18. But suppressing her powers as a baby or even a kid or teenager makes perfect sense.

    This was a powerful scene the actors were on it and because in the future Meta's were being attacked Iris did what she needed to do to protect her child. She had such a loving and caring relationship with Barry her true love, to loose him while she is still young and Nara is a little one; the drama of those days and moments had to weigh heavy of future Iris, so my heart hurts for her. I am too confused about why she never talked of the mother Iris, just about 6 months, but not all the time this lady was raising her child alone, never allowing another man in the picture because Barry was the love of her life; she never address Iris the mom who kept her, feed her, took care of her only about some power. I find that odd and I know she is being used or controlled by someone that has it out for Barry and Iris. She still has that Book of symbols, she is attached to the speed force as well; maybe it's much deeper than we know. iris has always been rational, clear headed and a good leader, an excellent wife and daughter and sister; why would she suddenly be irrational with her child. Makes no sense, there is something much more sinister happening.

    If you've seen OUAT, I kind of picture their relationship in the future like Cora & Regina. Iris might see herself as helping Nora, when she's really being overbearing and holding her back. Plus, we saw what losing Iris did to Barry (3x19), and that wasn't even the worst version of him. It can't be that hard to imagine that Iris could become similarly cold.
    Before you call me an Iris-hater, I'm not. I hope I'm wrong about her. And I hope even more that they save 2024-Barry, so this version of events is undone.

    Okay I’m just gonna say it. Enough with the hate on Iris. It’s bad enough that a lot of fans don’t like her, but her own daughter... That’s Just Wrong on So Many Levels. Plus I HATE NORA. I am Team Iris all the way because even though it was wrong of her future self to do that, u have to think of the reasons why future Iris would try and take away Nora’s powers and the reason is obviously because of Barry’s future disappearance and she just didn’t want to lose Nora the same way. It’s also seriously not fair or right of Nora to be taking issues with her mother out on her past self when really she should go back to the future to sort things out. If u ask me while Nora may still be young and new to using her powers, she is an ignorant, spoiled and naive brat especially in this episode and how she treated Iris.
