His videos are great, he is polite, friendly and once you visit SA you will not leave the same, a part of Africa stays with you 🇿🇦 the land of UBUNTU ❤️

    Oh yes, re the kids’ impression of SA. In a European country my daughter had to go on the internet and show her classmates images of malls and stuff in Gauteng. The girls had asked her where she bought her clothes, and when she said South Africa they told her she was lying and that there are no shops in South Africa. She was like, what? And they said you guys walk around on the roads carrying all your things on your heads. Even after she showed them websites about South Africa a couple of the mean girls chose to still not believe her.
    That was shocking, and my first taste of what people think about us.
    In the US you would find people looking down on you that had no business looking down on you, soon as they heard you were from South Africa. Mind you, they didn’t know that South Africa is a name of an actual country. They just thought we were from the south of Africa.
    Some would insist on an English name, even though my first name on my passport was a Zulu name, they would want me to state the English name instead. Have to say that a lot of the prejudiced black people one came across were from the Caribbeans, nurses and stuff. Everyone else (black) was cool.
    My doctor came to SA with a tour group while I was in the US, without his family, because he was scared. He enjoyed it so much he told me he would be returning with his family.
    That was awesome!
    I hope that more professionals consider making use of the scarce skills visa to migrate to SA. We need skilled people who care about us and are more likely to share their skills and lift the people up. Sadly, many of the people who have been coming through on the skills visa have really come just for the money, not because the country and the people had touched their hearts.
    All the best guys, and do continue assimilating as you are doing already. No enclaves and special places where only Americans go. South Africans hate that.

      I also remember my first time in Germany 2006, a Germany Lady asked me where I bought my clothes and she also asked me if I knew Thomas who went and lived Kenya. She asked about the Lions on the street.. So yes we still find those ignorant individuals even today in 2022 unfortunately.

    Gentlemen, what a riveting podcast! Julian, fellow Gemini, you have wings on your feet! Like a breath of fresh air, you fly across the globe and bring your viewers with you! You have opened our eyes to the world! I was alive and an adult when apartheid was still in full force. Look at how much things have changed in a short period of time! Julian, your videos are brimming with hope and inspiration! It's like you are this ambassador to this this brand new world! I had no idea that SA was so sleek and architecturally stunning! It's a reminder to "never say never!" You just wait 10, 15 or 20 years... there will be young people, coming up behind you, that will say you were a big inspiration for them to boldy follow their wildest dreams! And live their best lives! Gentlemen, I am just an old white lady. I know I am not your target audience, but, we share the same planet. As you grow and learn, maybe it is good for the rest of us to join you in some small way. I can't watch this content without being affected in a very positive way. It is sad you have to go to the other side of the globe to feel welcomed and like you belong. But, you have this infectious, pioneering spirit that will just keep sparking magic in its wake for a very long time.🫶🫡🙌💯✌️☮️

    I am 64 years old and while it is true we were fed a lot of lies about Africa we don't have to remain misinformed in 2022. With the internet it is possible to get a view of the African continent that is not through the lens of White Supremacy. It is incumbent upon us all to educate ourselves about the places we are traveling to so that we aren't part of the problem of misinformation.

      The apartheid system was teaching South afircans that Africa was there and somewhere dark and scary…even to this day South Africans still talk of “going to Africa” or “doing business in Africa” when they are referring to eg travelling to anywhere to rest of continent (exclude Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho& Swaziland). It’s apartheid legacy and we now know it’s false, nothing scary about rest of continent, just less developed than South Africa but very similar to SA. Think also this apartheid legacy what failures the afrophobia towards African immigrants in SA, South Africans just thinking themselves better than rest of continent

    • @SJokes
      @SJokes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thandisilec835 I agree with your point and xenophobia growing is defeinitely worrying, but I don't think Disney channel was a part of the Apartheid governments propaganda.

    • @thandisilec835
      @thandisilec835 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SJokes don’t think xenophobia is growing in SA, think ppl are just tired of having to not say they aren’t happy with how influx of immigrants from mostly rest of continent is a strain on the economy, infrastructure, resources(housing, health, schools etc) and there’s now a growing sentiment of this even in political circles which will hopefully curtail the violence as ppl can feel less hopeless not being heard by current leadership. On the apartheid and xenophobia connection, it’s definitely where it started as SA was locked away from rest of continent as white leaders then didn’t want anymore black people from rest of continent coming through and the border police then were brutal and you’d get shot if you were trying to cross border illegally or you were caught within SA borders without correct documentation… so anti- African immigration was more brutal then but everyone like SA’s afrophobia/xenophobia is new. what I also meant is that apartheid for the most part taught SAns of all races to fear Africa and all things African and the continent was deliberately positioned as undesirable and something SA shouldn’t aspire to, and that’s a clear connection to xenophobia too. So I don’t think ppl ever really talk about how the xenophobia that we see now exists amongst all groupings in SA (just the monies ones can just not mix too much with rest of continent and hire them but pay them lower salaries than they’d pay SAns) and it’s predominantly towards Black non SAns from rest of continent, not limited to them but it mostly towards them. I mean Chinese experience xenophobia in SA, so do the Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans etc but the biggest brunt is born by Black Africans from rest of continent and that’s sometimes due to fact they are often poor and live in areas that have the most economic strife in SA and when the violence breaks they are often seen as part of causing the issues(of course this isn’t entirely true) .government must clamp down on SA businesses breaking laws of hiring undocumented ppl so just to underpay themselves, which further creates tensions between local poor and the immigrants from rest of continent. Also government needs to control who comes in into inner cities, townships and rural areas to merely open spaza shops and sell counterfeit goods(mostly from Asia)…these aren’t skills nor types of businesses that SA should be importing

    Great convo brother Asad, love seeing the diversity of AAs exploring Africa. I wouldn't really recommend Nigeria, Kenya or Uganda for LGBT folks though, but it may be possible with a trusted guide. Southern African countries and some of the islands (Seychelles, Réunion, Mauritius) tend to be a bit more relaxed and open minded. Sadly, its the very legacy of colonial era laws that has led to a lot of homophobia in much of the continent.

      @@mabosigomolamu9850 They do, rape cases and GBV is not highly reported or does it even make news. The stories i had from Zimbabwean women are shocking and mind you, Southern African countries are very progressive, try to imagine what women go through in west Africa, the sad thing is, women from such cultures turn to defend their homeland because they turn to normalize abuse and just a lack of exposure and knowing better

    Julian need to be careful when picking which African country to explore, i will hate to see Julian been harassed. Some countries in Africa are even encouraged by the law to be homophobic, West, East and North Africa are way more homophobic, maybe try Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Angola, Seychelles and Mauritius. Brother Asad as usually, a good Samaritan. I hope Julian see's my text, we love Julian and his safety is our concern that's all. Even here in SA is not all rosy for LGBT community now imagine a country were the government has legalized it

    • @thandisilec835
      @thandisilec835 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think Kenya is tolerant, I follow a Kenyan TH-camr whom I believe is gay and he seems very out and loud in Nairobi. He loves to coming to SA too, so think Julian will be fine in Kenya but he must connect with the community there. He’d be fine in most of Southern Africa eg Namibia has total gay rights very similar to SA, Botswana is a bit iffy towards gay rights but he’d still be safe as Botswana is generally a safe country. Swaziland and Lesotho think are travel-able as a gay person but I’d say he must stay in the cities or her a host when he goes to villages(I’d be a pity not to go to village on Swaziland and Lesotho as they are beautiful). Even here in SA, some areas like rural villages can be more judgemental@ not totally safe, even some thugs in townships have attacked gay people, so I’d say he must choose who he goes with if he went into conservative spaces like rural villages. West Africa as a general rule has some of the most archaic anti gay laws so I’d say he must be hosted there should he go to Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea etc

    • @lozi4163
      @lozi4163 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@thandisilec835 Well said, i am from Tzaneen, looking back 10 years ago, there is a huge change in the villages regarding LGBT but a lot of work need to be done, i think Venda is still way homophobic but Tzaneen you can see Gay/lesbians of course not as free as in major cities. We still have work to do. I am based in four ways but every time i am at home, i can see and feel this change. I think Venda in Limpopo is most conservative and i will guess KZN as well can be more homophobic in rural because Zulus like to hold strong views and believes. I see Limpopo as a very progressive province after Gauteng and Western Cape

My maternal grandparents main house is in an EC village and there are young gay ppl in community and they are generally safe but ppl still judge. Similar by my aunt’s house who’s is in rural KZN town(not too village like but still rural) and her son is gay(my cousin), they are generally accepting as ppl see more and more gay ppl there too but still judgemental. Hope my generation makes it fully safe for all LGBTQI ppl to just be themselves regardless of it being an urban or rural setting in SA

    • @lozi4163
      @lozi4163 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thandisilec835 You are so right, i think by our generation we will see a full change because when i think about my home Town 10 years ago and now, its unbelievable. I left home 10 years ago to stay full time in Gauteng, its a shock for me. i have been in Mpumalanga, North west and KZN never been in Eastern Cape but from my experience, The Xhosa's seem to be very accepting except what i have seen when it comes to traditional mountain school for the boys, in Limpopo, going for circumcision's has also toned down as compared to when i was young, its no longer pushed down your throats and going to the doctor instead of traditional initiation school is also acceptable. When i was a young man, we use to be shamed for not going to mountain school. All this changes happened faster than i could imagine, i think is also a driving force to why rural area in SA is developing fast

Perhaps finding the place that gives you contentment and not setteling on your birthplace as the only option. I back packed via a Japan Rail Pass through the country of Japan years ago before the internet. I relied on Frommer's and Fodor's travel guide books to navigate my adventures. I stayed in various ryokans (Japanese style hotels) under the guidance of these two travel guides alone. I wanted to experience and immerse myself into the true culture. You all make travel so much easier from your vloggs. No travel guide can compete with your first hand experiences shared. I appreciate how you yonger people are educating me. Many thanks!!!!

    That Africa propaganda exists here in SA as well. Last year I asked my nephew who was 9 at that time if he knows Africa and he responded with a yes. I proceeded to ask him where do people in Africa live. That boy done said “people in Africa live in caves”. I was like oh boy, do you know that South Africa is in Africa. That boy straight up got upset and wanted to cry. It was a huge revelation he was not ready for I guess.
    I think it’s honestly the Cartoon Networks, Nickelodeon who always throw these “cave-lines” in their cartoons about Africa and always showing the desert when referring to Africa. When in reality all continents have deserts except for Europe. (North America, Asia, South America, Australia and Africa all have deserts)
