  • This Talk explains how the cladding of the Louvre Abu Dhabi was engineered and produced by specialist contractor Waagner Biro. It shows how CAD app Rhinoceros3D and programming language FSharp was used to create a custom BIM model suitable for very large amounts of construction information.
Recorded on 20 March 2016 at FSharpConf hosted by Microsoft Developer Network.

This is one of the MOST important videos of parametric architecture. Grasshopper and Rhinoceros where the needed tools. This is simply pure inspiration.
The paramount work shows your level of expertise Goswin.

Thanks! ☺️ Actually there was no Grasshopper involved and even Rhino was mostly just for visualisation, since there are no NURBS in this project. But both are amazing tools. ( The code runs in Revit too.)

So fortunate to find the video. Is a fantastic explanation. Mind if I ask a few questions:
    1) Why the external 4 layers has to be stainless steel and inner 4 panels in aluminium. Don't the ss reflect much lights and cause glare?
    2) How you prevent birds from building nest, or roost in the gap between layers?
    3) How do you clean the dirt, given the country may hv sand storm
    4) I understand there is no glass top, so the rain will just drop to the atrium. Is it because of little rain fall hence it was intentionally designed without a glass covering? How do people move fr one building to another if it rains. Use umbrella?
    TQ

I am glad you liked my talk.
      1) Yes, the concept from the architect and their engineers was to reduce heat by reflecting sunlight.
      2) and 3) by regular maintenance, there are nets and walkways to give easy access everywhere.
      4) Yes, rain is very rare in UAE.

@@goswinr SS to reflect light make much sense. How abt 2,3 and 4. Do u have the answer?

@@goswinr Tks so much for replies.
There are 4 layers top and 4 layers bottom. The build up will be thousands and thousands of crevices in between layers. Hows the cleaning done. Human hands going around the cervices? The netting are permanent or erected as needed for safety catch?

Does anyone know, if there are CAD Drawings of the Dome anywhere? We need to 3D-Print parts of the dome fro an Uni-Project and it would be awesome not to have to draw the Structure in Rhino myself.
