    Sad for Javan and Sumatran doesn't get exposure for their critically endagered status. Many people thought White Rhino is going to be extinct but it's only for Northern but there are 18,000 southern. While Javan and Sumatran status is alarming. Only below 100 are estimated in the wild. Many subspecies of Javan and Sumatran has extinct and its should give more atterntion

      Exactly! They are the ones that are not only more possible to save, but more important to save! They aren’t just subspecies like the nearly identical northern white rhinos. They live very remote from any other rhino species and are very very different from the other rhinos.

    Just recently watched a video about an experiment going on with the 2 last Northern rhinos, females. Neither are able to carry a baby full term so scientists have taken eggs from them and used male Northern rhino sperm that had been preserved some time ago to fertilize the eggs. They have viable embryos and were looking for appropriate surrogates when the film was made (pretty sure it was a very recent video) They hope to have baby Northern rhinos in about 2 years.

  • @Len124
    @Len124 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    I wonder if the cases of naturally hornless Javan Rhinos are the product of selective pressure caused by poaching? I know tuskless elephants are becoming more common because humans have essentially made tusks maladaptive. Just like any mutation, the phenotype would naturally arise anyway by chance, but in the past it would have been enough of a disadvantage to remain rare in the population. Now, at least in the case of elephants, the decease in population caused by poaching of tusked individuals outweighs their selective advantage, allowing those that happen to lack tusks more opportunities to successfully reproduce and pass on a trait that would have otherwise been a random, one-off mutation. Maybe this is what's happening with the rhinos. Though it's sad as hell that they have to adapt at all.

    I've had the chance to pet the last northern white rhino male in the world (he was housed at the Parc Safari enclosure in southern Quebec, did a sort of internship there a few years back), and it was sad how lonely he was. The safari tried it best to allow interactions with the others animals, but the mix of his worsening eyesight (rhino have bad eyesight, thus easily spooked), very surprising speed and size made it so that little apart from the giraffes tolerated him, and even then... I don't remember the exact reason why they couldn't save the species, I think it was a mix of not enough to start a viable population, the few ones left being related and the old guy own failing potency...

      Just recently watched a video about an experiment going on with the 2 last Northern rhinos, females. Neither are able to carry a baby full term so scientists have taken eggs from them and used male Northern rhino sperm, that had been preserved some time ago, to fertilize the eggs. They have viable embryos and were looking for appropriate surrogates when the film was made (pretty sure it was a very recent video) They hope to have baby Northern rhinos in about 2 years. The plan is to have any babies born put in with the Northern 2 females as soon as possible too because the Northern and Southern have different habitats and so different behaviors as well.

    It is in the DNA of Hinduism. _/\_

      You can't generalize that..
      If people were not greedy, asia and Africa's fauna would have bloomed again after independence from colonization... But it's becoming more and more less..
      So much so that elephants don't grow tusks anymore to prevent poachers..
      I live in Koraput region of odisa where they poach deers despite of various regulations...
      Well all I can say is we can't prevent extinction of each and every species...
      So it's better to collect DNA from 2000 individuals from each species and keep them safe while trying to prevent extinction of those which are living and endangered
