As an Aussie it intrigues me about how people from other countries go on about how scary our spiders and snakes are when they have full on bears in their forests.
Those animals kill more often than bears do, there’s more of them than bears, some would say bears are cute, and it’s only really the Grizzlies and polar bears you have to look out for. (That and TBF spiders are weird in that the scarier, big hairy ones are harmless while the smaller ones have a small chance of being lethal.)
As an Aussie I would rather go camping in Australia than forests in America that have bears. I've heard to many horror stories from bear attacks which evolved campers, hikers etc.
Another Aussie, and can concur. I live in an area with saltwater crocs, and it always amazed me when Americans get terrified about how we can live near these animals. Thing is, if you keep out of the water, no croc will get you. Bears, however, will get you while you are out walking your dog in the "woods"...

I still remember watching as a little kid a documentary about the Short-faced bear that stuck with me to this day. It had a very silly fight between the bear and a Ground sloth that veguely resembled a boxing match.
Yeah it was oddly memorable considering how bad it was. Who knows, maybe one day we'll get a documentary about the largest specimen of Arctotherium augustidens, a very large, old male with numerous injuries sustained throughout his life.

They come up on a kill after another large animal has expended the energy to take down the prey and run the killer off and eat the food with less effort. The bears that could smell food more quickly and easily could find it faster, eat more, put on weight and were able to survive their rather rough mating season to have more offspring which carry the trait for a better sense of smell. The trait was naturally selected along with the bears' other successful survival traits, such as being big omnivores with a long reach and a scary maw.

Modern apes will not evolve into human beings, they will evolve into a more derived apes. Just like dogs will not evolve into foxes, even though they both have a common cainid ancestor. Will modern apes evolve into a more derived form that has some of the same traits as human beings? Possibly, but that would depend on what kinds of environmental pressures the species encounter over time and if a population can survive those pressures. We don't have a great track record on that score. That would then be convergent evolution, like penguins and cormorants...or like bears and wolverines! If you're going to swim in the big kids pool, try to be civil. If you can't be, go back to the baby pool but don't pee here.

I only recently found your channel. Your videos are really well put together, straight forward visuals and even though you are a fast talker the narration is very clear. Your early video on the different branches of the mammal family tree was also really good.
I love and appreciate the fast narration…when a narrator speaks too slowly, I find it hard to concentrate, especially if there aren’t subtitles to string the words together more closely. People say it’s relaxing but it just frustrates me
It’s like Africans in Congo eating chimpanzees as bushmeat even though over 98% of our genome is shared with chimps/bonobos. And in turn it’s like me eating my neighbor across the street and not in the good way… lol
I agree calling any animal "stupid" for adapting to a particular lifestyle makes no sense. I do think it's sad though that so many other endangered animals are usually snubbed in terms of conservation money in favor of the giant panda, which is almost certainly going extinct in the not-too-distant future. I wish people would realize that just because an animal isn't cute and cuddly doesn't mean it's not ecologically important to conserve. Still gonna be a sad day when we lose pandas though :(
It is called charismatic species, conservation for charismatic species would protect their natural habitat in turn protect everything where they supposed to live. This is a well known conservation tactic, this is why animals like Elephants, Tigers, Rhinos etc... are the faces of conservation even if white rhinos are plenty in the wild. They have wide ranges and they protect many species in turn. A real example would be Tiger reserves in India, despite having billion people that needs resources, they managed to protect large pockets of forests for tiger habitat because tigers are charismatic.
There’s multiple factors that make pandas stupid mind you, they don’t really care about their offspring, they aren’t very cute, they’re mean, and I don’t think it’s fair that he’s calling people who simply dislike a species of animal fat :/

A Panda's diet isn't actually that poor and contains about the same amount of protein as most other bears. This is due to the fact that they eat different parts of the plant at different times of the year.
Plus from what I've heard, Bamboo is a fast growing plant species( a type of Woody grass?) So the Pandas have food that doesn't take months or years to grow like a tree.
One thing I’ve noticed about pandas is because of their herbivorous bamboo diet they’ve unfortunately ended up in the prey category along with other herbivores like sheep and zebras and are frequently hunted by snow leopards clouded leopards wolfs and surprisingly asiatic black bears. It's only in the last couple of years that scientists have descoverd something about the bamboo panda's eat. They descoverd that not all bamboo is the same in it's taste and nutrition. They also descoverd many other thing's about why the animals behave in certain ways. It's because of certain bambo shoots that are growing differently. It's also in other food Stuffs. It's fascinating insight into the relationship between food and every living creature on the planet. It's a thin line that devides us.✌🏾✌🏻

Since most pandas live in zoos now where males are seporated to stop them from fighting the females dont ovulate and as such they dont breed anymore. The problem with pandas is humans, not their food source. They existed for millions of years on bamboo and were fine.

Those who think that pandas are stupid because they eat bamboo sticks have not understood what evolution is. Many carnivorous animals they evolved into omnivores and then into herbivores, and other way round. Pandas didn't become vegetarians out of laziness but to survive. One example is Darwin's sloth, an ancient (and huge) cousin of modern sloths, which ate meat. While modern sloths eat sprouts and fruit.

A grolar bear is what would happen! They're similar in size to both, and can look more grizzly like or polar like depending on the individual.

Many carnivorous animals they evolved into omnivores and then into herbivores, and other way round. Pandas didn't become vegetarians out of laziness but to survive. One example is Darwin's sloth, an ancient (and huge) cousin of modern sloths, which ate meat. While modern sloths eat sprouts and fruit.

I think pandas are just over specialized. Not really a bad thing but it does make them very vulnerable to change, which we tend to cause. Also pandas are cute so leave them alone, they're doing their best
