A word of advice, the measurements they give for the pattern sizes are completely off. I generally wear a 10 or 12 in sewing patterns, but according to the pattern size guide I should wear a size 18 or 20, because of my waist. I don't think they have updates the measurements since the 1950's when a 25 inch waist was considered normal.

i've only had to work with patterns once back in high school, but my teacher just kind of gave us them and said "do it." and any questions we had, she'd come do it herself instead of showing us what to do and what everything means. patterns have been such a mystery to me ever since. thank you!

Pattern sizing has become the bane of my existence just because I'm a really odd shape. So for my current project I have to work between three different sizes and figure out lengthening.
PinkThornVlogs Unfortunately that will not change any time soon. At least you can buy patterns for a few dollars when they go on sale a few times a year.
As someone with a weird shape myself, I recommend creating custom patters. I cover myself in cellophane and tape, and draw on top with a sharpie. My body is kinda weird, I'm a size S on top, XL on bottoms, very long and thick legs, but a very small torso, so premade patterns just don't work with me :(
I have the male version of this pattern. Awhile back I bought some two way stretch and just recently cut it out so that I can sew a mock up. But instead of cutting the pattern and winging it on the sizes, I traced over it with wax paper! Just a little hack for you 😊.

I go through so many videos trying to understand patterns but they always bore me this video was actually really helpful, didn't use too many complicated words to make themselves sound smarter , thank you so much I'm using this specific pattern so this helped me a lot like A LOT

Patterns give you a lot of information.
Honestly, this helped me so much in convincing me to actually give patterns a try! Up until now I have been fully self taught and made all my cosplay by making my own patterns based on clothes I already have and then looking up TH-cam stuff to try to fill in any gaps in my knowledge. But, after watching this, I feel like I will gain a lot of knowledge on how a garment is properly made and will definitely fill in the gaps in my knowledge! Thanks for this!

The sizing on patterns are ture sizes, garments over the years due to lows in clothing indursty have been subjected to vanity sizing to help increase sales. People are more inclined to buy new clothes if they feel they have lost weight.

I actually rather make my own patterns then use pre-made ones. I just find it a little easier and I enjoy making my own! =]
PhippsyArt yeah, I feel the same!!!! Patterns are just so confusing that I usually only buy the pattern and just experiment and just ignore the instruction. But most of the time, I just like making my own pattern since its easier!!
I do mine too most of the time but I also use those sometimes and the instructions are so fucking complicated that i skip that part and go straight cutting and it's working so far

kingikiller Simplicity and I think McCall's have some patterns that you can adapt to your size. There are also "easy" patterns that you can start with to make some basic items. They even have some costume basics in the easy patterns. I started using them then moved up to more challenging options later.
I don't even read all that info on a pattern lol never have but maybe I should start! I've always see a pattern like a puzzle ...its worked so far but I'm still learning after 20 years of sewing for fun the different stitching for different fabrics ... always learning I am .

As someone who did struggle with math I can say that I personally found reading patterns to be a lot easier. I don't know if that's how it is for everyone, but don't be intimidated by it! ^.^
Hey there, very informative video! When using actual fabric instead of the pattern templates, are you supposed to mark out those triangle notches onto the fabric to help with the placement?

Very helpful! I actually made a Harley Quinn bodysuit with that pattern and it was my first time ever following a pattern and sewing something from scratch, so it was pretty disastrous. But this helps clear up a lot of my mistakes. Lol. Thank you!! Hopefully I'll do better in my future endeavors with this knowledge. 😂
Until now I have been making my own patterns manly because it was easyer for me. But I think I will try a purchased pattern in the future.

I was curious about that pattern, and it really doesn't look hard at all to remove that weird underbust seam haha. i wonder if it actually helps w/ shaping other than just like, existing for aesthetics. ive been debating on what kinda patterns i should use/if i should just make my own, and i think thats the only premade one with darts in the front and back. I'll probably go with it, even if I don't really like that there's a leg seam lol

You don't have to have a picture on then. You can just have your social media and an email. But a selfie is still good if that's all you have and want a picture on then.

patterns aint too expensive in general, most of the ones ive bought are around £5-£15
If you live in the US JoAnn Fabric will have patterns for $1.99 up to ten patterns. Mom and I go crazy pattern buying. Sign up of the snail mail mailer. Most patterns will start about $20 to some Voge at even $50.
The only problem I have with the envelopes is that I have to break out the converter to work out how many metres I need as they're always written in yards but we sell things using the metric system.

Oh god. Okay, I have one thing here. I am plus size, I fit the size for the McCall Body suit you use, but my bust is HUGE for the freaking pattern. What should someone like me do then? :< I will be attempting a Harley Quinn suit this year (well, one of her versions. Not the classic one) and like.. I wanna use the Yaya body suit pattern for it, but I have no idea on breast section altering. X.X (For reference.. My measurements are like.. 49/50-39/40-54 with a bust of like.. 38H/36K😰) This is why I'm terrified to actually get started with cosplay. ^^`
I can only suggest making mockups. Multiple if needed. If you know your chest size is the only issue then maybe just mock up the top. Till you make the pattern as big and you need. Then work down to fitting the leggings to it
If you wore in Arizona I could help you with that. Being a chubby girl myself I have struggled with some sizes as well. Sometimes having two people to help try the paper pattern on you helps.

I really wish there are patterns sold in my country. It would make costume so much easier to make because I dont know how to draft patterns
equinn56 You can buy used or new patterns online. Make sure the seller does not smoke. If it is a used pattern ask them to take pictures to make sure the pattern is cut out at the largest size with minimum amount of holes or tears.

Why do you cut the pattern pieces out of the original sheet? Instead of using pattern paper, trace it and than cut that one out?
i don't feel like I need to save my patterns by tracing them. Some people do, to reuse them in different sizes. But if im using it just for me then it's fine to cut it up. Saves a lot of time
The one thing I find confusing is seam allowances. do the pattern pieces themselves have the seam allowance or I still have to add my seam allowance ?
The pattern will say the seam allowance on it. The standard is 5/8 but different patterns will have different seam allowances included so always double check.
Axceleration so the pattern pieces themselves have the seam allowance, I don't have to cut out an extra 5/8in around the pieces for the seam allowance, just sew them together knowing the seam allowance the piece has ? Or at least if the pattern says it includes
the pattern pieces have the seam allowance in them, you do not need to cut extra.
Be sure to check your pattern, sometimes the seam allowance changes depending on the seam line.
90% of the store patterns have seam allowances. Some homemade patterns you buy and print online might not have any. All historian patterns you trace from a book will not have seam allowances and are put tighter different. Like everyone has been saying, read all of the pattern before you even start cutting.
