I've wondered why the front (i.e, the south side that faces the Tiananmen Square) of the Tiananmen Gate tower sometimes has 8 large red rounded lanterns but at other times they are absent. Are they only displayed when there is an official function taking place? Perhaps there is a fear that tourists would damage them?
