Never take old clip from driveshaft to secure cv joint thats the tip i have done your way always take old one and put new one and always struggle. One of my old mechanics says leave one on it dont put new one and i do this way with no problem always great video. Your right mechanic hard job:)

Sod that, although self employed life at times is hard, the positives outweigh the negatives if that makes sense

Never have an issue with the CV joints. Changed many of them. To drive the CV joint off, the hub bolt is just a little too short. I put a small impact socket in the hole first to make up for the shortness of the hub bolt, then drive the hub bolt in. The spring clip can be a pain when putting the hub back on. I normally guide them in from behind with a small screw driver or needle nose pliers. If you don't and force the hub back on, you run the chance of shearing the spring clip off..
Yeah like I said an easy job made difficult, tired and hungry not a good combo 😂😂
Feel your pain mate. Whenever I think ‘ah, I’ll just do a cv boot for this customer on this occasion’ they never come off or go back! I’ve also started installing complete shafts. Sometimes do it with coil springs too - complete strut, spring and mount ready assembled. With the driveshaft, one trick I use is to put a cable tie around the shaft clip to compress it. The joint then taps right on and takes the cable tie with it so you can just cut off afterwards.
Haha always the way, yep tried that trick, just wasn’t having it for some reason, full shaft is always easiest and most sensible option isn’t it really
Stretchy boots are the way forward there, just have a little compressor and the airline boot tool

That was a plug tap in your hand. The stock is the handle for the die. a dwang is the handle for the tap, and there is another tap called the taper. the taper hasn't got threads to the end like the plug tap and the taper is the first tap you should use to start the thread.

I run a mark 1 TT and had to replace the same boot. I got the shaft out of the hub easy enough, but could not get the joint off the shaft. I had a joint puller and also tried the trick with the bolt and some encouragement with a lump hammer, but it would not shift. Rang my friendly local garage, they said no problem, we'll get it off if you bring the shaft up. They couldn't get the joint off either, they finished up splitting the driveshaft at the other end to change the boot.
See at that point it’s just worth putting a whole shaft on, I had the exact same scenario with my dads golf
change those wiper arms all the time just use a nut splitter very quick and simple

I hate doing brake shoes always feels like you need extra hands. Last time everything kept jumping out of place, when I tried to fit springs. Ended up using a belt round the shoes to keep them in place. 😂😂

Great video, many many years ago in my know everything youth 😊 I bought a CV boot that you could glue together, it opened up like a clasp, it got me through an mot then next week I had to replace it cos it was a load of rubbish and grease was everywhere cos it came apart 😂. I too hate doing drum brakes, they should be banned lol. Cheers for the great content.

You're a better man than I am doing the boot in situ, I've had so much stress in the past doing boots. I actually hate doing them, and I now always remove remove the shaft and put it in a vice, so much easier to do and able to do it cleaner aswell, good work chap 👍
I spoke too soon, mate, that's the reason I always remove drive shafts now
😂😂😂 VAG cars I usually do in situ and isn’t an issue but this one just decided to be difficult 😮💨
I feel for you being self employed and even being a mechanic i hate doing jobs on my car as not all ways jobs go to plan but when i was working i would rather work for some one else but be grateful that you can work as im disabled now im only 45 i had to give up 25 years of welding and fabrication on because of getting Covid x2 and the mental health issues are horrible and made my arthritis in my knees worse so i would advise useing knee pads or a matt mate
Ah mate really sorry to hear that 😔 yeah I’ve got knee pads but football has done my knees in anyway so they’ll always be a pain

Errrrm i wouldn’t even know where to look as I film so much, but go into your diagnostic computer and maybe electrics and should have live data for the doors, hope that helps mate
You take some tough jobs to be doung on the road side. Hope you charge them a top rate for a top job.

@kerbsidemobilemechanic i do mobile work. And i see your point with CV JOINTS. J&R DRIVE SHAFTS. You cant go wrong. Whats the topdom diag like? I use a snap on it has a scope on it but it needs updating and i havent had it done since 2018. Its too costly. Whats the price on that topdom please? Love your videos.
I’ve never got on with snap on diagnostic machines, I think they are over priced as is a lot of the snap on stuff although the quality is good 👍🏼
I feel your pain as a mobile mechanic my self who set up a week befor covid hit so hard to shut of from the job regardless how much we enjoy or some times hate lol. Keep up the good work

Some of these jobs are horrible on these modern engines, I hate drum brakes, so old fashioned, your a great mechanic Aaron, I'm think twice if my cv boot goes on my TT , a great vid, mate, keep you pecker up!!, all good.

I didn’t see anybody recommending any TH-cam channels? Iv watched all urs from the start and all marvellous Lara’s, watched a few of o’Riley’s but they’re more when I need help with a fault code rather than watching them all because he doesn’t really do a day in the life sort of videos. think I’ll give baz a try next with all the spare time over Christmas 🍻

Use a nut splitter that will work as the metal soft on the rear wiper arm thats wot ive use before

I always use the stretch boots they are pretty quick to do and cheap, not had any comebacks so far.
I’ve not really used them, I’ve always heard they aren’t a good fit?

I had 2 complete driveshaft from j and r for a customers a3 for 35 quid each.
I alway forget about J&R 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️👍🏼

I recommend a handbrake shoe removal kit, especially if you do alot of them

Unfortunately i got that feeling doing rear pads 1hr 30mins job ended taking over 3hrs as the manufacturer thought it'll be good to just hammer the pads in and no sort the issue.
Had to use a long ish screw driver to get it out and the new pads wouldn't go in even after the bracket had been cleaned from dirt. Honestly thought i was doing something wrong 😅😅.

Get some aftermarket cv boot clips, they’re much easier to fit and do the job on most cars
The ones that come with the GNK kits are normally decent tbf

I just did both inner boots on an R50 mini. Nothing went easy on that, so I feel your pain.

Never had the cable tie trick work. I tend to use the plastic bush thing to sit over the clip and tap the joint over. So far not failed. Which obviously means next one will fail.

@kerbsidemobilemechanic I know. Ironically I was able to do a passat this week using the bolt trick. Think it depends on model. The ones with 14mm hex seem stubbier than the ones using the 17mm. Just pop a small long reach socket in those

I'd say I am lucky to do this as part time,when in good mood.
The rest is driving lorry in decent warm environment,getting paid decent money.
On the other side cant see me without playing on cars.
I think I’d enjoy cars a lot more if it was a hobby 😂😂

I always feel like that with being self employed. I try and explain to people the problem is you're the everything man. The mechanic, the driver, the customer service, the advertising team, Web design, so on and so forth. With a 9-5 you just do your job and be off, nothing else is your problem. When you're self employed, everything is your problem 😅
But would you change it?
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic It's a tough one for me. I'm not a mechanic for work; I run a bouncy castle business. I look at my net sometimes and think I'd be better finding a 25-30k a year job and saving all the aggro that comes with it. But then I've had my fair share of rubbish experiences with normal employment. So it's a rock and a hard place moment!

For CV boot jobs I use Air CV BOOT tool, of course cv boot should be rubber one not plastic one that you can stretch it enough

I can without a doubt feel your pain. I have to admit i wont be helping my neighbour with his lexus hybrid as he can take it to lexus lol.
I have to do a cv boot on the offside front inner but luckily i have a univeral cv boot which you glue together so i wont have to go through the hell you did.
Hopefully next week will go better for you. 🤞

@@kerbsidemobilemechanic Believe me i am. I think first i will try a normal one and boil it to make it stretch then use a cone to put it on. if that dont work then try the universal

That should not have been that awkward on the Audi.
With hindsight, that would have been a good candidate for a stretchy boot, which would have saved you mullering the splines on the old cv.
But, if you’re using stretchy boots, don’t use the stupid plastic cone and washing up liquid. Get the proper tool for stretching them.

No I’ll pretty much do any timing belt as long as I have the correct timing tools 👍🏼

Yeah they do, but usually like I say best repair is complete shaft as in er boot will go at some point and then it’s more labour cost
I’m not an official mechanic but I sometimes do odd jobs for people at work etc they always say “ ah it’s easy mate will take an hour just haven’t got the tools to do it “ yeah it’s never that easy always siezed or rounded bolts etc then I remember why they didn’t want to do it themselves 😂
Jobs for friends and family are guaranteed to go wrong 😂😂

You take too much work on so that wont help with ya with your stress then you will cutting corners to get your jobs done .. that's the advice I got years ago and it's true in my opinion take it easy and big up from Scotland lad

What an absolute mission to change spark plugs why do car manufacturers come up with the maddest designs i had a problem with my oil level in Audi a5 kept asking me to add 1 ltr but it had oil in turns out for the oil level sensor to take a reading the Bonnet has to be opened and closed turns out my little micro switch was stuck in the closed position even if it was open contact cleaner and fixed the job no more dodgey oil readings and 4 mechanics couldn’t get to the bottom of it they wanted to change oil level sensor which was brand new 😂

Any BAD days when you was employed? Maybe think of that when having a bad day working for yourself …….probably plumbers ,sparks ,decorators etc have bad days 🤙🤙
Oh 100% a lot more “bad days” when employed and I wouldn’t if possible ever go back but it’s a different kind of bad day or stress 👍🏼
I was self employed, best thing I ever did. Now back in full time employment and pissed off with stupid demands and unnecessary monitoring and being constantly judged by my employer. Self employment equals freedom in my book and I'd love to go back to it again. Keep up with the good work 😀

@ I’ve never been self employed…..when I was 20 I started to have panic attacks at work ….never been able to work since ,now 30 years on I need two new knees ….i don’t think I’m brave enough to go through that op
I moved from the South West to the North West of England and couldn't take my customers with me. Was a window cleaner but now working as a warehouse manager for a bacon wholesalers Kerby.
Feel for u bud as working for someone in a workshop takes it toll but always saying working for yourself you work twice as hard people think they earn loads of money and not do any work hardly when start a business keep chin your doing well

Hate doing shoes that much, change my son ford focus 1.6. To st rear dise calipers and handbrake cable. Also can you stop talking about tools. Just ordered a sump repair kit, just in case.

Unfortunately, the mobile mechanic business model, is flawed. Travel between jobs, and parts collection, are not billable, not to mention the dodgy working conditions you are dealing with. Yes, a workshop costs rent, but you already have one! 🤔🤔🤔 You have a yard full of potential customer loaner cars.
I’d have to disagree with you, obviously, there are many many mobile mechanics that are successful and making good money, I also know garages that struggle to make good profit because of the high outgoings

Even us engineers hate them as the tits who designed them have never tried working on one and all the ECU are getting more silly Iv just knacked a citeron dispatch by taking battery off it's 20plate and didn't know battery needs matching how stupid all done to make you go to dealer
