The treatment of Vietnam and Vietnam era veterans is best exemplified by the treatment of the Blackhorse Riders of Alpha Troop, 1st Squadron, 11 Armored Cavalry Regiment. For their heroic actions rescuing an infantry unit on March 26, 1970 their unit commander, Captain John Poindexter prepared dozens of citations for combat decorations and forwarded them up the indifferent Army chain of command where they were "misplaced" until discovered in a sealed box in the National Archives by military historian Keith Nolan who was born after the end of the Vietnam War. With the help of President Obama and various legislators this major Army blunder was finally rectified on October 20, 2009 when President Obama awarded Poindexter and his men the Presidential Unit Citation along with their individual medals. The TH-cam video entitled "Thank You For Your Service (A Moment of Truth)" about an 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment veteran shows why non-POW Vietnam and Vietnam-era veterans still appreciate it when people thank them for their service.
