When on cruises, we have had several Indonesian stateroom attendants or dining room staff. My wife speaks Indonesian and when the staff finds this out, our service level suddenly improves. We were told that there was a 45 minute wait for a table in one specialty restaurant but, when the hostess learned that my wife was fluent in her language, a vacant table was available. Interesting. Be nice to the staff.

I smoked on my cabin balcony. I bought a Cuban cigar in Colombia and I wanted to smoke it. I asked the cabin steward if it was allowed. He said yes and brought me an ash tray. My advice is that if you are wondering whether something is allowed or not, ask. Maybe it is allowed. But never assume something like that is allowed.

We have just returned from a South Pacific cruise and were absolutely stunned by the totally rude and aggressive way some passengers treated the staff as if they were their servants. Drunk, demanding, horrible. The crew worked so hard to assist and nothing they did was good enough. People please pack your manners when you leave home.

My dad worked on a cruise ship a long time ago (that's how my parents met LOL ... mum was taking a cruise and met the bartender!) and he said one of the reasons for not hanging things on your balcony is that, if it blows off, it creates a false 'man overboard' because they don't know if it's clothing or just a towel, is someone out there? It's very expensive to search and find out it was just someone's towel or beach wrap that blew off.

You should never assume that putting dishes outside your door is appropriate. You MUST ask. Most cruise lines will see leaving things in the hall as a hazard and request you leave them in your room. If that's the case, don't just spew them all over. Neatly stack them on the desk or coffee table if provided, a single spot, to save your steward from having to search for everything.

I like to hang out in the piano bar, and on every cruise so far I've taken there always is at least one person around 11pm or midnight on the drink package who gets cut off because they are drunk and they start to scream at the barender or server who denied the drink. 3 security personel were in the room in about 8 seconds to ask them to step outside the room.

Another courtesy tip if sharing a cabin.
If you are a light sleeper and wake up about 3am, don't turn your overhead light on to read your book. Leave the cabin and go to a space on one of the numerous floors to read your book.
Also, don't open the curtains a little bit at 3am to see what's outside especially on an Antarctic trip where it's still light.

And when I hear this, (fully logical) 15 things like don't smoke in none smoking areas of don't steal the bathrobes or towels and so on, I doubt if I will ever do. Just the thought of being surrounded by people who have to be told they should not steal annoys me.

I took a cruise in 2016,( it was about my 20th cruise), and the experience was so horrible that I made the decision to never cruise again. I won’t name the cruise line, but it was a popular one with which I had cruised a few times prior to the 2016 one. The cabin steward was rude and lazy. We found clothes that had been left behind by previous guests under one of the beds. She argued with us when we brought this to her attention and refused to remove the items. The dining room waiter was also inattentive and largely absent, but the busboy was wonderful. The overall experience was so negative that I went to the purser on the final night requesting that the line refund my mandatory tip. I’d never done this before in all the years that I’d been cruising. I guess I’ve said enough.

Idk, I do not like trying to walk down a hall , and more so when ship is moving a lot and holding on a wall rail and then trying to step over some ones food, ick , walking down the hall that is full of plates people have just layed out in the middle of where you have to walk I think is wrong. , when you know your attendant will take them out of your room several times a day. So I really disagree on that one. Beside the fact is just gross to be walking by stinky half eaten food on the floor. Better to call the attendant to have taken away if you don't want your plates and glasses in your room, not put that on other people by laying outside your door. I keep my cabin tidy agree with that, mostly do that so all surfaces and floors get cleaned well.

We learned either to leave a slight crack or to pull the drape in front of the lock when on the balcony.

I would have asked someone who worked on the ship if it was possible if the lock was broken. That's a bad hazard for the passenger to be locked out on the balcony. Cruise line could be held liable I would have thought??

9:35 One thing not mentioned... don't try to feed birds when in port. EVER. Seagulls, especially, will quickly swarm on an available food source. They will try to look for food sources in adjacent areas, and it takes a long time for them to give up. In the meantime, there is the very real potential for bird droppings - the ship crew have enough do as it is, and needing to divert staff to clean bird poop across several balconies - you are not going to be popular.

That is true about the towel stacks on deck that you help yourself to and then drop them off into the baskets on decks like you said for free but at least on Royal Caribbean you have to show them your sea pass card and then they’ll scan it when you take them and when you return them and my understanding is that the payment is $25 if you haven’t returned them by the final night.

It’s rude to leave your dishes outside of your cabin. It’s difficult for people who are in a wheelchair or scooter, it’s makes it difficult for them to pass if those dishes are in their way. Put them on a table or counter asking your attendant to dispose of them.

So guests should throw anything overboard - - do as I say, not as I do mentality at work - cruise ships are the biggest polluters on the ocean, they dump their garbage instead of paying a shore company to take the trash. Like Mt Everest climbers - - they climb and don't care about the litter left behind either. But don't worry, it's outside of territorial waters.

I do not adhere to the "do not hang things on the balcony" notion. I bring my own towels along with clips to prevent things from blowing off. The bathroom has no air circulation and stuff hung in there does not dry! Put a dehumidifier in there and that would work but no one does that.
