    Genie can see the future. At the end of the movie he says "your not gonna find another girl like her in a million years. Believe me I know. I looked.'
    ... just had to bring that up.

    You're missing a darker angle to his time-travelling. The genie experiences time out of order and when he gets free we see him live the world in "one hot second" suggesting he can move freely throughout time once free. What if, while chained to the lamp, he doesn't control his time travel power. There's just one lamp and anyone who finds it at any time calls just the one genie to their time period to use his power. So the genie was forced to experience the 20th century and possibly the dark post-internet wastes that lie ahead before he experienced the 14th century. The genie never objected to the wishes and helping people, he objected to being forcibly dragged across human history unable to grow relationships in a linear fashion or see how anything turns out - because he only ever gets to see the few weeks tops it takes each person to exhaust 3 wishes. THAT'S why he goes back to Aladdin. Aladdin and Jasmine's romance, their friends and their new life together is the genies first opportunity in 10,000 years to fit in somewhere and actually see something through.

    • @Loreki
      @Loreki 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SupraViperhead He has not necessarily bonded that deeply with Aladdin at the end of the first film. Aladdin is, however, the first person he's met/knows when he begins to experience linear time (and is in some ways responsible for his new freedom) so he's good a person as any to start an attempt at human relationships with. This theory is solid, not even Dan could disprove it.

      SupraViperhead to be fair Aladdin did do one of the most selfless things anyone could have done, after his 1st 2 wishes flopped Genie tried to talk him into wishing for the girl, but he instead decided to use his last wish to Genie's benefit, if you dont feel a special bond to someone after that then you literally have no heart

    My theory is that after the Genie is freed, because he has no limits to what he can do except the three Genie rules, he traveled through space and time to check out other universes and has seen everything pop culture and such. And then, because it was proven that he was the Merchant at the beginning of the film, he decides to tell HIS version of the story, using pop culture references of things non-existent at the time of Agrabah. Thus, all that comedy and those references he said during the movie... NEVER happened! He was a dignified Genie, with only knowledge of what was going on at the time. After space-and-time traveling, he learned about comedy and movies, and other worlds and such, so when he told the story, he inserted those elements in to make his story more interesting and funny to the audience.
    --
    How's THAT for a theory?

    Here's a topic. Is the "Dark Side of the Force" truly evil? And is the "Light Side" truly good? If you have studied the extended Star Wars Universe, you learn that the difference between the two, the truly deciding factor, is that the "Dark Side" is using the force through passionate emotions, which is easier with negative emotions, and the "Light Side" is used through reason and lack of emotions.
    Therefore, it is POSSIBLE for a person who only uses strong emotions to control the force which will technically be the "Dark Side" and they can still do the right thing, and for a cold, reason based person to use the "Light Side" to accomplish evil.

      I like how there is a balance and a middle way in your post, a master of the flow, from all forces, all diverse forms of life , consciousness, and energy and expressions of truth in existence of our Universe.
      Buddha. To rest in ZEN when the balance of ego tips, to rebalance.
      To adjust focus of consciousness from all life and consciousness to a single life and consciousness, only as a way to navigate all.
      To do no harm, and to stay in votive to all life, consciousness, and to continue the flow, or Mandelbrot of existence.
      Caretakers , teachers, protectors , nurturers , providers for all life and consciousness, only as a choice, offered. Giving eternal possibility, with that higher consciousness and truth, to be manifested from imagination into reality. Truth, and unity.
      I just agree. I stated why. I think I went crazy thinking too much. I am in the ethos. Now. On a good page. I think I can chill now.

      I actually just watched Equilibrium because it was streaming on Netflix and the society in it was surprisingly close to how the Light Side of the Force is portrayed in the Star Wars series and it shows the realistic and horrifying outcome of if the Jedi Order were given real control over the universe. Think about it, Jedi are all about how all emotion is bad right? Well, in Equilibrium, the entire society is forced to take a drug that gets rid of emotion all together and anyone with feelings is shot on sight. In that movie, the people with feelings are the good guys, who in the Star Wars universe would actually be the Sith. If you think about it, the Sith really are the good guys of the SW universe, they are just power hungry and corrupt and focus way too much on hate, but ideologically they are far closer than the Jedi ever were. Somewhere along the way the Jedi thought that no emotion was the opposite of hate, when in reality love is the opposite of hate. Their entire system is flawed. If they did allow love, and encouraged it like they should have to counter hate, the prequels would have never happened, George Lucas would be several million dollars poorer, and fans everywhere wouldn't have that burning sensation when they pee. Seriously though, go watch Equilibrium. Its a shitty movie, but gives interesting insight into the Star Wars universe, albeit unintentionally.

      Luke introduces dark side teachings into his new jedi order in the extended universe because he knows that it's the person using it and why they use it that makes a sith. In fact it's said that Mace Windu knew some dark side techniques because that is what his purple light-saber means.

    In Aladdin the Magic Carpet Ride song scene (A Whole New World) there is an Egyptian chiselling the nose of the Sphinx, if he is actually putting the finishing touches on it this would be 2500B.C, however if he is restoring it, it could be any time. But then they fly over China and China has clearly invented gun powder as we see fireworks, this places it around the 10th century or later. Needless to say there are continuity issues.

      @Raytrek79 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      LastLaughStudios True, it is believed the Sphinx nose was damaged in the late 1300's A.D, so this would be the setting, however quoting popular culture is a continuity issue, unless as they say, the Genie can exist outside of linear time or can time travel, another possibility is he still lives now and was a writer for a number of famous movies.

And the third movie actually does end with that same merchant showing up again as if he's been telling the story non stop for all three movies. Actually, I have to disagree with Dan and Katie. Agrabah MUST be in a future where everyone's reverted to ancient times, because in the 1300's the Sphinx was not being constructed and the Parthenon was not in it's prime as depicted in the montage of Jasmine and Aladdin exploring "A whole new world". The only way that those 3 places could exist at the same time is if the people of the future cherry picked their favorite century of the past and replicated their society because they thought it was better than their current one.

    • @micahhorton2877
      @micahhorton2877 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Why couldn't Genie conserve his own personal favorites, like Dan is saying, and he was bringing in that in so that Aladdin and the citizens of Agrabah wouldn't have any idea... Eternal ant farm type stuff. Genie has all these "sets" from different time periods because he liked them (hence the Sphinx before it was built and the Parthenon being in it's prime) and he's kept it all there just for his amusement, like they're saying. Just, Genie's own little aquarium of people and monuments. Forever kept away from the rest of the world. Never to realize they're just stuck in a never ending time loop.

    • @IchibotK

      Nightingale Fallen in the film, the Sphinx doesn't look like it's being built--more like being renovated. Also that's not the Parthenon. The Forbidden City firmly places it after the 14th century, so you're still correct that Dan was wrong.

    What if The Genie just had the ability to time travel and he came to the present and saw Groucho and Jack Nicholson and Rodney Dangerfield and cars when a previous "master" wished for the ability to see the future? And what if he had been stuck there for 10,000 years because that same previous master, on his third wish, asked to be sent ~10,000 years into the past, probably without realizing it was his third wish. He was out of wishes and The Genie wasn't discovered for another 10,000 years.

      that works, but failes to explain the city of Agrabah not being recorded or existing, but that could possibly be explained by the Mongol Horde raising the city to the ground after the Genie left, wiping it from history and leaving no trace, with Agrabah being a local name, and therefore not recorded in any documents outside of the city

      @@FieldMarshalFry i mean citys have a lot of names. History is also really hard with place names. We know that the ancient empire of Kush existed south of Egypt, but we have no ideas what it was. We have texts about citys on the silk road that we don't know if they were in Persia or India because the only person that wrote them down did a shit job. Some city state near the Persian golf could have just been Agrabah but we would never know because why would we.

    Maybe Genie just genuinely likes helping people. Remember, as soon as he's freed by Aladdin, a man he has never met before and knows nothing about, he does a big, showy song-and-dance routine about having phenomenal cosmic powers and being able to grant wishes. He even says throughout the song that he "has a powerful urge" to help him out and "he really wants to know" what his wishes are. In fact, the only thing Genie complains about regarding his job is the fact the he goes back into the cramped, dark, lonely bottle for long stretches of time when it's done.
    He doesn't seem to mind doing things for people, he even insists on it a lot of the time. There are people in real life who like going out of their way to do nice things for others, especially their friends, and most of them don't have the ability to do that within a fraction of a second, at no personal cost to themselves. Think about it, if you somehow had infinite money, wouldn't you pay for things for your friends whenever they were short on cash? Or help them out if they needed money for a major car/home repair or a serious operation?
    Really, the scary thing about Genie is the fact that he's ONLY helping out his friends with these powers and not helping out the entire world. Or the prospect that Genie's presence and eventual discovery by the rest of the world will lead to an upheaval by the major world religions. The best case scenario there is that the entire world becomes Muslim, either due to the proven existence of Djinn, or forcibly because they have a goddamn Djinn. The worst case scenario is even more Crusades than in real life, and the Umayyad Caliphate taking a lot more of Europe than just Cordoba.

    • @7MukuroRealm
      @7MukuroRealm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. If you're a Genie with limitless power, why WOULDN'T you help people? Just because you could? It's not like you gain anything from selfishness, you can literally do anything. There's no cost for Genie to use his powers for Aladdin and his friends. Presumably he doesn't go any higher up the societal ladder than that because there's a lot more grey areas involved.

    No, the dark thing about Aladdin is the mortality of Al, Jasmine, and the rest of Genie's friends. You see the reason why Genie came back to Agrabah was because Al was his first real friend. Like he explained in the oasis in the first movie his previous masters just treated him like a tool to grant their wishes without any thoughts to his wants or dreams. Aladdin was the first person not to do this and even risked never being with the woman of his dreams in order to keep his promises of freeing the Genie. That act of putting someone's needs before your own isn't just a prime example of friendship, and even love, but was the first type of affection Genie has ever experienced. And it wasn't like Aladdin just kept him around for all the stuff he could give him since multiple times in the animated series he has risked his life to help Genie and only asked him to use his powers to save people, thus cementing their friendship.
    The sad thing about this is that despite all of his deeds Aladdin is still a human who will age and eventually die and the Genie will be helpless to stop it. Even when he had all of his powers the act bringing somebody back to life was strictly forbidden so when his mortal friends pass away he won't be able to bring them back. Hell, even at some point the kingdom of agrabah itself will die and Genie will be forced to watch it decay into nothing. Now you could say that he watches over Aladdin and Jasmine's children and descendants but then he would have to go through the pain of losing the people he cares about every 60 or 90 years.
    The dark thing about Aladdin isn't that Genie doesn't know how to deal with freedom but that he will have to suffer never being able to be with the people he loves and cares about because of his immortality.

      @danielappleton153 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never thought about it like that, the genie or " djinn " being immortal. They can outlive their masters until their receptacles are discarded or forgotten about. & I never thought about a genie / djinn desiring a friendship ( with the exception of " I Dream of Jeannie ", where Barbara Eden as Jeannie was crushing hard on her master ). Interesting !

      One of the rules is he can't bring people BACK from the dead there have been examples of Aladdin 'loop-holing' his rules before when he tricked genie into freeing without explicitly wishing for it. So i would say its is quite possible for genie to keep people from dying so the immortal time bubble still seems plausible to me

    Honestly, I always thought that Genie continued to hang around with Aladdin because, while free, he remembered that he's immortal and his little buddy who was so kind that he was willing to give up the love of his life to free him, wasn't. Therefore, he figured that he'd have his entire life to enjoy his freedom while running about to different places AFTER Aladdin was dead. In the meantime, he only had so much time with his best friend, so he wanted to spend it all with him. It's kind of like how I know that my aunt is probably going to pass away next month due to cancer, so I really want to just drop everything and be with her until then.

    3:33 What?! The Aladdin TV show didn't take place after the movies - it took place after the first two movies, but before the third movie. The third movie had Aladdin and Jasmine marrying each other, and Iago leaving them for good to travel away with Aladdin's father.
    The whole point of the King of Thieves movie was to give us closure to the whole entire story of Aladdin - how could you possibly have missed that? The show aired BEFORE the last movie. It basically was the show's finale, more or less. This alone also destroys the status quo control theory with Genie you had.
    Also, thousands of movies not taking place in our world has pop culture reference, so it's downright absurd to suggest Aladdin must be taking place in our world. Of course it's meant to be a fictional world.
    If you're going to talk like geeks about this... how about acting like ACTUAL geeks/nerds, rather than pretending to be? Don't go "Big Bang Theory" on us - we real life geeks and nerds can tell the difference. :P

    No no no! You guys have it all wrong! The Kingdom Hearts series proves why your time travel theory does not work. Agrabah is literally in a completely separate world from our own. One of the Genie's masters obviously knew about this and wished to travel to another world and landed in ours. That why the Genie knows about technology and pop culture. After returning to Agrabah his master made his last wish and the Genie was forced to return to his lamp until his next master found it.
    And how do we know he was really stuck in there for 10,000 years? The Genie was trapped in the lamp in the Cave of Wonders with no source of sunlight and probably was not able to use his magic in such a small environment, he had no way of knowing day from night. For all we know he could have only been there for a month but he was so messed up from major claustrophobia, lack of sleep and no way of telling time that in his mind he was stuck there for thousands of years.

    6:29 Makes sense, but only if you include in the genie's cosmology all of the Greek Pantheon and the monsters that came with it. Remember, the Disney cartoon also had the Hercules cartoon show, and both *Aladdin* and *Hercules* had crossover episodes with no time travel involved. You even see the art style (of the Hercules movie) in the first Aladdin movie, during the "A Whole New World" song. Both series take place at the same time period, which makes the entire "13th century Agrabah" theory fall apart.
    So unless both series are encapsulated within a "bubble universe" (a la "Phenomenal Cosmic Power!!!"), then something else is going on.

      “Western China” isn’t anywhere close to Syria, dude. But the story was written by a Frenchman in the 18th century, who wanted to keep the feel of the rest of One Thousand and One Nights, but for some reason set it in China. Oh, and he forged two backtranslations of his story in Arabic to trick people into thinking it was a traditional story. He apparently did steal it from a Syrian scholar who regaled him with the story years before. Still makes no sense he’d set it in China.

      Not intentional, more like inevitable since the problem of evil is kind of an obvious flaw that exists whenever someone can see future, has the power to stop bad things but does nothing. It's actually worse for the genie, since you could make the argument that the afterlife is eternal and this life is finite so God can do whatever he wants while still being good, but the genie doesn't have this out.

    You notice that when he goes on his trip around the world, he comes back with a variety of modern things, like postcards and a Hawaiian shirt. Is it possible that Agrabah already existed in its own pocket-dimension, and Genie managed to break that boundary without thinking anything of it? Maybe he did know about it and trapped Agrabah that way millennia before the start of the movie, and forgot the events that found him imprisoned in the lamp. There's no solid evidence in any scenario we cook up, so there's no point getting too worked up. This is fun, though.
    I should mention that in the original story, Aladdin was set somewhere "East" of the author's home. East of the Middle East is either India or possibly China. A lot of other adaptations of the story use Chinese cultural themes.

    How did the Genie become 're-enslaved' after the Aladdin film? After he comes back to Aladdin (the person, not the film) he's wearing the Lamp-Servitude-Bands again. For someone who's been enslaved for much, MUCH longer than 10,000 years (only 10,000 years in the Cave of Wonders, much longer before hand with the previous Masters), keeping what amounts to your identification brand is not something you would want.
    Though if we go to the whole 'Genie exists outside of time' theory then wouldn't he in a perpetual state of 'Schrodinger's Cat Existence' where is always and never enslaved to the Lamp? Actually the Genie could have his "Phenomenal Cosmic Power!" due TO his existence outside of time. Without being subject to laws of reality because he is existing in state of omnipresence, he could alter reality to his will. This got a lot more metaphysical and quantum philosophical than I meant it to and I'm out.

    Honestly...the difference between Aladdin's Genie and the "Thousand and One Nights" Djinn trapped in a vessel for 10,000 years are hilarious...One's like "I'm your servant, here's 3 wishes!!", other is like "I waited so freaking long, forget the wishes...hey you, you get to make a wish, choose your own death."

    The Genie is a probably omnipotent being. I doubt he cares much about being compensated after basically poofing a wedding into existence, especially when he's probably having fun doing it. Also, he probably realized that freedom is great, but he also wanted to be with his friend Al.

  • @Nintenbrony

    I don't think the Genie has Stockholm Syndrome at all. If someone let me out of solitary confinement after 10,000 years, treated me with respect, and asked my opinion on how to use wishes, that guy would be my best friend for life (or until the end of his)!

  • @Christopher_Gibbons

    The proof of your theory is right in the first clip you showed. After he is freed, genie visits the great wall, paris, and modern day new york, before returning seconds later. Clearly Agrabar is trapped outside of time while all of human history passes it by. Hmm an all powerful immortal being, older than time itself, creates an extradimentional space where he punishes the wicked for all time... Why does that sound familiar?

    Well, time travel/characters that exist outside of time are often faced with the issue knowing when things happen and knowing they can't change anything big. Doctor Who is the big one that comes to mind. Killing Hitler before WW2 means that the Nazi party never rises to power. all the tensions following WW1 are never resolved, and the technological advancements made during that time out the world behind several years. Medicine , communicatuons, transportation, computers, space travel, science, math, it all gets put back. And all the world tension that was caused by Ww1 remains for years. The economic depression in several countries and the economic boom following WW2 also never happens. Sure a lot of pain and suffering came from WW2, but a lot of things that are objectively good also came about because of it.

      It's just what some of the first episodes of this series were called, and it's become kind of a trademark of afterhours to be called something like "why x is secretly y," even if it's not much of a secret.
      It's probably better not to question Cracked logic anyways.

    Maybe Genie is Aladdin's buddy, but only specifically Aladdin's. He cares about the one guy who freed him, but the rest of humanity can go suck it.
    That's why he stuck with Al and never lifted a finger to stop 9/11.

    The thing is, though, the genie doesn't need to be compensated. I'm sure he just enjoys Aladdin's company. I mean, what would Aladdin do for the genie? "Hey, Al, can you get me a drink? Oh, wait, nevermind, I got one already. I time-travelled back to one second before I got thirsty and conjured up my past self one out of thin air. I did this in less than a picosecond, by the way. Thanks all the same, Al.
