How to change wheel bearings on a 1997 F-150

  • I show how to change the front bearings on a 1997 F-150 2WD. This video Shows how a failed bearing will seize onto the spindle. The caps are called races and they go in the rotors. I did not change it because the rotor in this video was not that old. Always check the race and make sure if its damaged you replace it with the new races that come with the bearings. If you are not sure change the race anyways. Always replace the bearing seal. This video is is how to change the bearings that's it, it is not how to pack bearings or how to install races.
    The criticism needs to stop. An update as of 2/27/2021 I regressed these bearings and the front

    Appreciate the video. I bought one of those bearing packers, I think about $15 on Amazon. Does an amazing job and well worth the money. Amazing how it shoots the grease right up inside the bearing. I was taught to slowly, slowly tighten that nut to 30 foot pounds while spinning the wheel one way and the other bit by bit. Doing so gets the bearing seated correctly. Then loosen the night and finger tighten it and it's time for the cotter pin. About gave me a heart attack when I was taught that, but I looked up the torque spec and it's 2 foot pounds, and that's finger tight. Again, thanks for the video.

    • @chriss4365

I was looking for something else., but happened to see your video. To demonstrate why I know you dont know very much is in your video. The new bearing comes with a new "race" Thats the ring thing you thought was to protect the bearing. races are matched to bearings. the old ones you left in the hub. they should be driven out and replaced with the new bearing race. Sure it will work for a while, but it is not correct. I really do appreciate your effort as i have been building repairing and servicing engines, trucks and 4x4's for 40 years. I would like to teach you how to do it correctly, like my dad did for me, and his dad. I like your spirit but your smart ass arrogance is quite troubling. How will you ever learn, if you really believe you don't have to do things the right way. Your repair will fail sooner or later, it just will. The trouble is it could fail on the highway and your wheel could come off and you could kill your self or some one else. It really does matter how you do things. I will make a video of packing a wheel bearing and send you the link. Just so you will know how to do it the right way.. Pointing out others alleged mistakes is a waste of time and you learn nothing. Your teacher needs some more schooling. The race will wear down under the needle bearings. With the amount of slop that bearing had I most likely had pits in it along with the average wear from the needles making a groove. The race should be mirror smooth with a new bearing or else the bearing will just fall into the grooves of the old bearing. Basically what ends up happening is your new bearing rides on the "ridge" left my the old grooves until it wears the needles enough to fall into the old groove. Once it falls into the groove you will have the same exact issue the bearing you replaced had. It's like buying new tires when your alignment is out of wack, your just going to wear them out in a few thousand miles when the tire may be able to last 50,000+ if you did it right.

    Removing the caliper doesn't need to be done, by taking the caliper apart. Just take out the two bigger bolts, then slide the whole thing off, with the pads still in the caliper. Reinstall by reversing the process.

  • @BlancoLobo
    @BlancoLobo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is not the proper way to replace this. You need to remove repack and inspect the inner bearing and seal as well. Because you left the old seal on the axle spindle it will not seal properly and you would never be able able to get the preload correct on the bearings. Also you should have removed the races from the rotor (the parts you didn't know what to do with) or replaced the rotor with a new one that had the races installed. You should really invest in a bearing packer they are inexpensive and do a much better job than packing them by hand. Also replace the cotter pin for safety. That grease cap is also not sealing anything anymore with that big dent in in and needs to be replaced to keep water and debris out. To torque the bearings, tighten the nut snug while spinning rotor, Then back off 1/4 turn then tighten up just till your nut feels resistance.

    • @chriss4365
      @chriss4365  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe you got the wrong size bearings so their too small leaving wiggle room. You only need to change the races if they have damage or are clearly worn. The bearing should almost fit snug.

    You installed the axle nut way too tight. The rotor/hub were not spinning freely.
    This is what destroyed your outside bearing. It was binding.
    Final torque should only be finger tight, no tools should be used.
