    I love this, it reminds me of my dad or one of my uncles uncles playing with a "glass" in their hand. The French lyrics make me think that this may be from Quebec. Player pianos were certainly popular when I was a kid in Montreal. My 'artistically poorer' friends who did not have a musician in the household, had a player and would pull out the rolls for entertainment. (When I was a kid EVERYBODY had a piano, yes I'm that old)

    I have a whole trunk full of these rolls and the piano to play them. I'm hoping one day to restore it back to working order.

    That's really nice. There's even lyrics in French and English written into the roll.

      Yep. That's only on rolls meant for accompaniment, of course -- note the label says the song is for Tenor and Piano Roll -- but it's very useful as long as you can see the roll progress.

    A lovely roll well worth reparing.

    huh.... the tears are intriguing how the piano seems to read it... Kinda giving it goofy touch!

      Me thinks he needs to invest in a bit of tape.

      Sounds as if Edythe Leslie took too many sips of that glass of beer on the piano before she finished playing. 😉

    Arranged and played by Edythe Leslie. The “improvements”, perhaps made by poking at it with a pencil?, had surprisingly little impact on the body of the piece. As for the end, well, check out Conlon Nancarrow’s works for player piano. They are on TH-cam. I sorta like this better...
    I’d search: repair tear in piano roll: before attempting a repair, even with acid-free tape. There’s a “tapatalk” pianola forum page titled, “Tips and Techniques for Roll repair?”. I like what Adam Ramet says on that.

    this was the epitome of player pianos , they had evolve to [note the left track] to more accurately render.

    Miss the player piano that my parents had. Loved Star and Stripes forever, but what 7 year old boy wouldn't.

    A fabulous arrangement and maybe you've fixed the tears by now. Certainly well worth looking after.

    Definitely a few more holes than were intended in this roll!

  • @grandcarriage1
    @grandcarriage1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The improvements were kinda hilarious. It was a bit like the piano was belching as it sang.

    Imagine Gene Kelly as in the classic 'Singin' In The Rain' musical or Malcolm McDowell at the piano like a creepy scene from Stanley Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange'. ;)

    actually- these extra tunes, from the teared role, - I´m SURE they were made by Vladimir Horowitz.. He would have added these funny tunes to the role, cuz, he had a GREAT feeling and, sence of humor - for all kinda music...

  • @PiotrBarcz
    @PiotrBarcz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think some little kid probably punched holes in this while it was playing, i don't think that was intentional

    Ausgesprochen interessant. War sicher sehr mühsam diese Rolle zu machen.

  • @petermork902
    @petermork902 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Oh my, some people sure didn't like the alterations.
    I would imagine these were done on the fly one afternoon, by a bored kid holding an icepick. I know this because I did the same thing to many a roll in my youth. But I was better at it - I used a razor blade!
    (Tip for neophytes - cut horizontal slashes to play the top five notes on the keyboard - instant jingle bells!)

  • @hotsickle
    @hotsickle 12 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    it isn't that hard to repair those rips and holes. just unroll the piano roll over your piano bench and use some invisible tape, dust the back with some light powder so the sticky side wont adhere to the roll when wound up. it's a little time consuming but worth it to save these wonderful songs for future generations to hear ! :{)

    I just discovered your video. Love it of course ! Strange thing concerning the French lyrics, they are not the ones sang in France at the time and I never heard them. I tried to sing those ones, they fit perfectly on the music :-)

    • @Wolfrover
      @Wolfrover 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, the arrangement is by Edythe Leslie, as it says at the start. Most likely she made the translation, so it would doubtless fit her arrangement.

  • @TorontoJon
    @TorontoJon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    When one thinks about it, these piano rolls are a precursor to computer punch cards and hence, these are part of computer development history. :)

      It's great as is at least until the end.
      I don't consider it a waste of time considering that it's almost 100 years old.
