If you're a gamer/streamer/windows user looking for a hardware level fix. Just use a (Female to dual male) xlr splitter to both mic inputs so you get Left and Right audio. That way you don't need to mess with software and have a hardware level fix.
you probably already figured this out by now but for the people who also want to know this just go into your windows audio settings for your microphone and click on properties then set your default format to 1 channel
I'm so grateful for this video! I was so desperate about how to solve this problem. And I was worried I would have to re-record my episodes for my podcast. But you solved my problem, thank you so much!!
Had this issue but with live output from a dynamic mic only playing out of one side. The mono 6.5mm mic jack plug has only the tip and sleeve with no ring so even if your input socket is "stereo" the physical layer cannot put any signal into the right channel as you'd need to feed the tip and not the sleeve (common) into the right channel where the ring would normally be. In the particular instance the twin speaker cabinet is setup to take a stereo input @ 8 Ohms being driven by a 25+25W amp. While it is possible to bridge the speakers to either 4 or 16 ohms, that would cut out one side of the amp and either load up the one remaining side or reduce the output and also lose any minor stereo separation that the cabinet can produce, it's a much better solution to simply get signal to both channels. The quick and dirty workaround was simply to take the tip and split it to a L/R output direct via a homespun splitter box but this somehow seems suboptimal as you're effectively halving the impedance ratio and thus creating a higher load on the mic. While it worked in practice and is a nice simple passive solution, it would seem to me that to do it right would require some kind of additional impedance probably resistive in the splitter box to correct the output to input ratio, particularly if you are feeding into various preamps with various input impedances. Same thing if splitting after preamplification, you'd still be changing the impedance ratio and while it probably isn't a big issue with 20:1 or higher ratio's it could be a problem when dealing with 10:1 or lower ratio's. While DAWs can sort this channel issue out, it isn't a solution that is transferrable to correcting the source signal for a more universal solution.
I arrived a bit late, but this guide helped me on my OBS Studio. After my streams when watching a few minutes I always heard my voice from one headphone. No longer, thanks for this guide!
Very helpful! I was always wondering why my sound was so panned to the right side. And also why i heared layers of my recordings on top of each other. Thanks man!
Well this obviously fixes the issue for professional audio software, but what about windows? What if I want to use my XLR which is plugged in input 4 but I only hear it coming from the right side, because input 4 is paired with input 3?
This used to be a very common problem for neophyte contributors on TH-cam. Many didn't know they were posting videos with sound coming through to only one ear. Very annoying! I discovered that if I would pull my 3.5mm headphone jack out a millimeter or two, suddenly the audio comes through to both headset speakers. I wanted to help those people, but not knowing what hardware they were using was a problem. All were posting from the mic built into a low level camcorder, as far as I know.
Thanks a lot! It helped me to find the trick in DaVinci resolve to change the sound from stereo to mono so now I have the sound in both sides! Great!!!!
Forgetting specific pieces of software, I just want to know how to get the computer itself to recognise my input signal as stereo. So when using the simple "Voice Recorder" app on my computer, my recording plays back in stereo.
Thanks for this video. I’m on a Mac, and I’m not seeing similar controls for interfacing my Scarlet 2i2 into GarageBand or my video editing software Screenflow. Everything is recording in one channel. Any suggestions?
What if you have a headset plugged directly into your computer. When I do a microphone check with the Windows "sound" function, and click "listen to this device," I only get my voice on the right side.
This didn't solve my problem, but helped me understand what was going on, and eventually I found the solution. It was really silly, on audio->device, my 2 output channels were all set to channel 1, so it's no wonder how I could just hear through the left side of my headphones only, I wasn't using the second channel! In the end, this video still helped me, so thank you! PD: I use Reaper, so maybe it varies a bit in other DAWs.
Thanks my man was Having the issue of recording only to the left ear even with streamlabs obs while streaming was wondering how to fix that well now I know and it's fixed Thank you...
Great video. I record videos in Camtasia. How do you either fix this in Camtasia or Prevent this from happening? I am using an Electro Voice microphone and an Audient EVO 4 interface.
I am staring off a podcast and got the mixcast 4 and use the mixcasr podcast editor software. I connected condensor mics and headphones. Performed a test run and audio is coming out of the left side only. Did I do something wrong?
So I have a LG already built-in amplifier subwoofer speaker set but also bought some rocket monitor speakers with their own amplifier wired them to my LG but I had to get a balance converter to make it happen. The problem is when I cut it up too loud my speakers and go out until I cut it back down now the converter seems to be blown. What can I do to fix this issue?
To fix this for your pc camera/voice recording, right click on your speaker symbol in the task bar, go to sounds, then go to recording, right click on your audio interface (for example Analogue 1+2 Focusrite USB Audio), click on properties, go to levels, click on balance, and turn off level 2 (or whichever isn't in use).
I appreciate the video, however I'm still having trouble I have an interphase that only has one microphone plug in and it only lets me record on a stereo track. mono wont work. Will i just need to upgrade to a better interphase?
Hi, I’m having this exact issue with using an M-Track duo connected to my phone through a USB -C hub. I’ve had to export thr audio from the footage in my camera roll, send it to my PC, use audacity to convert separate the stereo track, delete the empty track, duplicate the track with the audio, combine them as stereo, then send back to my iPhone to sync back up with the footage. Do you know how I can skip all this? If I get a single input interface, will it record the mic onto left and right, or will it do the same? Alternatively, maybe there is a conversion app or DAW that will allow me to do everything on my iPhone rather than sending it to my pc to use Audacity. I’d appreciate any insights you may have.
I have a Scarlett solo, it was recording in stereo perfectly fine then out of nowhere the left side of the channel stopped picking up audio, I disconnected my mic and plugged art into a different interface and it started working again but didn't work on the Scarlett, I don't want to record in mono and I need to figure this out.
Please tell me if I can use a Y cable (2 female and I male) to connect Scarlett 2i2 and a condenser microphone to my Macbook. Will the 48 volt power from 2 female ports damage the microphone or degrade the audio quality?
I am attempting to record a piano video with my iPad using an audio interface and having this problem. I have the stereo headphone Jack connected to the audio interface in the mic line in, then I am going from USB-B to iPad USB-C. Any ideas? Trying using Yamaha my recorder app and camera app
My co-host and I both have a mic connected to the interface. My mic sounds good but hers sounds distant when we playback. She is just as close to her mic as I am. When we switch and hook my mic into line 1, then mine sounds distant. Any ideas how to fix this??
@@AudioUniversity I am not sure. We are both very new to this. Could it be that we were both recording on the same track and I possibly need for us to record two separate tracks at the same time? Is that what you are referrring to?
Question: When I go live on Facebook or when I record in Quicktime the sound always comes out the left side. I understand how you just told us to fix the issue by changing to a mono setup however how do I make it mono when I when I am recording to Facebook Live or when I am recording in Quicktime on my Mac? Facebook doesnt give you the option of a mono setup nor does QuickTime. So how do I get it to come out on the right and left side if I dont get the option of choosing a mono setup?
I'm not sure how to resolve that. This is the first I've heard of this issue. I'd recommend checking to make sure your ASIO or driver settings are correct. Let me know if you find a solution. Good luck!
@@AudioUniversity I am on a Mac. Its all plug and Play. I have a focusrite 8i8 and it records into the left and right. I connect it the same way and get two different results. Both are plug and play. Its not like a windows computer where you would have to install the drivers.
