Hi Beth and thanks a lot for this from the incomparable Kate Bush. She called this one her getting drunk songs from this album. because she talked about getting drunk in order to do the freestyle ad libs at the end (the other was the wonderful 'Waking the Witch.' Now if you were to do an analysis of 'Hello Earth' from this album you would be giving a gift to the world - for her performance on that song is just spellbinding. Thanks again for this.
This is one of top three favorite songs of all time from any artist although Kate Bush has always been my favorite musician since 1985. Thank you doing this track and really breaking it down. I do want to cast a vote for "Get out of my House" - The Dreaming gets very little love but it's a absolutely brilliant album with some of most amazing vocal work.
What other person could have "pause for the jet", followed by the sound of a jet, in their song and it be perfectly okay? Yes its a fun and expressive song.
Yes! This is her best vocal delivery. It's truly fearless, especially toward the end. The other songs on this album get all the attention, but "Big Sky" deserves some of it. I'm joining your channel now! 😂
Kate almost always did her own background vocals. At least until she used the Trio Bulgarka on her Sensual World album. I like it when she uses 4 or 5 different voices within one song, such as Suspended In Gaffa. Can't go wrong with Kate. By the way, have you reacted to Peter Gabriel and her duet music video for Don't Give Up?
I enjoyed your analysis of that one from the incredible Kate Bush. I think Kate is probably quite a challenge for vocal coaches to analyse given the extent of what she can do and how far she diverges from the norm.
Great memories - you can see me at the front of the “stage” towards the end. The music was pumping while this was being recorded - took you over completely. Kate gave us all “Big Sky” branded lighters (mine still works) to wave at one point. Trouble is they quickly got red hot. Became a test of loyalty how long you could keep your lighter lit for. This was on the second day of recording for the video - won’t ever forget it. Kate over indulged slightly and needed some time out while this was being recorded,
Love your description of Kate as a painter of sound. But when you mention layers and complexity with subtle expression (true of Bush) I think if Genesis, both with Peter or Phil. Impressionists. (love Kate's creative, tongue-in-cheek sense of humor)
I love this song and the way it transforms into a full-on rock number. It also has one of the most varied vocal performances by Kate in terms of styles - she's throwing everything in there at the end.
Back in the eighties and nineties Kate was in a league of her own. From 'Song of Solomon' she sings 'Dont want your bullshit. Just want your sexuality. Write me your poetry in motion'. And in the Sensual World when she paraphrases Molly Blooms soliloquay from James Joyces Ulysses 'And then I took a kiss of seedcake back from your mouth. Going deep south going down. With six big wheels we'll roll our bodies out off Howth Head and into the flesh. You said I was a flower of the mountains. Yes. But now I have the power of a womans body. She really was way ahead of the curve.
Your best review yet (made easier and difficult at the same time by the amazing voice and production of Kate Bush!). You could get away with a 1 hour version of just this one of her songs.
Thank you, Beth! I have been a massive fan of Kate Bush for many years. I still remember going out and buying the, "Hounds of Love" album, when it was first released in 1985. Please can I also put a recommendation in for you to look at some of Laura Marling's material. Perhaps the official video for "All My Rage" might be a good place to start. I honestly believe Laura to be the best female singer and songwriter to have come out of the UK since Kate Bush.
Vocals!! No one sings like Kate Bush. The Meteorologicial mix of this is my fave track of all time. Kate just lets rip with her vocals. Incredible. Great review too! Thanks.
Great reaction Beth! I think many people don't 'get' Kate, but once you do that can of worms is open forever. If I could afford to Patreon you I would, but in hope I would love you to review Army Dreamers by Kate Bush please.
Thank you for choosing this song! I don't know why this is not more well known, I think it could be massively popular in any age, just like "Running Up That Hill" became. Lorde clearly borrowed from this song in "Green Light", and I say good for her.
Very interesting. I’ve heard of Kate Bush and even a reference to Wuthering Heights, but knew nothing. Now I need to go on a treasure hunt! Thanks for introducing her to me. MB
#2 on my Kate Bush list (Wuthering Heights in at #1 obviously), just love this track, the vibe, very catchy. The video rocks! The “cloud looks like Ireland” helped push it up the Irish charts, no doubt. :D
I was turned on To Kate Bush by a dorm mate in college back in the day when she was putting stuff out. She did have a way of making complexity sound great. Some time it can be just over load and busy. I didn't know how involved she was in the technology her self, amazing. Good recording equipment used to only the in the hands of a few major labels but now many more people have access to it. Another great reaction, thanks.
Two artists in the 80's - I bought their albums Unheard. I saw they had a new album out and I snatched it off of the stands and bought it. Kate Bush was one. The Cocteau Twins was the other.
I didn’t know either. It’s sad knowing he has gone. I’m glad I saw his amazing facial expressions in this video that always makes me laugh one last time before finding out.
The Fairlight synth was named after a hydrofoil ferry in Sydney that the maker used to see out of his window. The ferry was probably named after the Fairlight homestead in Sydney, which in turn was probably named after Fairlight, a village in East Sussex, UK. The software piracy group Fairlight got its name from the synth... or a C64 game which got its name from the village...
Somewhere I thought I read that she used her sampling board to sample her own voice and add it in so that she could be her own backing vocalist... I may have that mixed up with someone else, but I frequently hear backing vocals in Kate Bush's songs that sound like her herself... Might have imagined that or it might be someone else completely....

For me another particular beauty of a lot of Kate's work is the basis of the song, in a musical sense is really quite simple, then, She adds all these mad vocals n' howls and whatever, and also kinda quirky musical lairs on top of it all. Thanks for your great and interesting review. Lets all keep watching the 'Big Sky'. It will reveal a lot to us ;)
Everything you pointed out is why Big Boi from Outlast says she is his favorite artist and a huge influence on Outlast music. There is a clop of him talking about his love of Running Up That Hill. He eventually tracked her down in a small town in England and crossed having lunch with her off his bucket list.
First of all, love it when you analyse my fav artists haha Second of all, it's so wonderful to see you happy and enjoying your work haha Third of all, keep it going Beth, you're sucs a sweetheart and teaching us valuable information around compositions and singing techniques, really love it ❤
I almost never listen to single tracks from this album- I treat it like a Pink Floyd album- in it's entirety or not at all... same with Lennox Diva or Peter Gabriel (first four albums- #3 my fave). Love Kate's voice, her songs, and above all else, this album...

RIP, Del Palmer - a great musician and engineer who was integral in shaping the sound of Kate's music
So to sum up...Kate Bush is a genius.
No doubt

Oh my gosh, I LOVE "Hello Earth". Yes I hope Beth covers that one!
Absolutely agree! Waking the witch is a stunning track as well, but hello Earth is just spell binding.

The Hounds of Love album was that rare combination: both an artistic and a commercial triumph. Her masterpiece.
This is one of my favorite songs off one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite artists. Kate is an actual creative genius! The REAL deal!

Thanks for doing this. I love Kate Bush and this song. Your analysis is amazing!
There really aren't words to describe how special she is.
I enjoyed your analysis of that one from the incredible Kate Bush. I think Kate is probably quite a challenge for vocal coaches to analyse given the extent of what she can do and how far she diverges from the norm.
I love her little effect at 3:37. It reminds me of the Diva Dance from the Fifth Element movie.
Great, entertaining analysis of a brilliant and highly original artist! Thank you.
Pure genius vocally, and a supremely gifted song writer.

I love when Kate does the occasional scream.
Have you heard the song she did for The Comic Strip Presents... called Ken? Lots of screams on that: th-cam.com/video/_Opl8t-Wahc/w-d-xo.html
Always wished she did more of those screams. She has such a killer voice with so much versatility.
@@TheDreamingJune I do concur. Bjork can also scream. I love when women singers scream. It's just as exciting when male rock singers do it.
@@silgen Checking it now. Thank you@
@silgen "Leader of the G.O.P." That's the Republicans! She should switch out "Ken" with "Trump", then we'd have a great campaign song!
Kate Bush is in my top 5 vocalists of all time. Such a unique, expressive and versatile voice that very few artists can emulate.
That was fun listening to your analysis and obvious joy reacting to this amazing song and artist! Bravo!
I love this song and the way it transforms into a full-on rock number. It also has one of the most varied vocal performances by Kate in terms of styles - she's throwing everything in there at the end.
