- A double-decker school bus carrying more than 60 passengers has crashed in Northern Ireland’s County Down.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) has declared it a "major incident".
The double-decker bus was carrying more that 60 passengers, over 50 have minor injuries and 8 are being treated for more significant injuries at the scene.
BBC News understands the majority of those onboard are pupils from Strangford College.
Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) have deployed five fire appliances and a specialist team are at the scene of a "collision involving an overturned bus".

Student involved with crash here, unfortunately more than 8 people suffered major injuries as I saw myself, and there has been talk that there was a single casualty.

I was in the M53 bus crash last year in England and this crash really hit hard since it’s so similar to what happened to the bus we crashed in. I hope you are able to mentally recover quickly, it was this time last year that our bus crash happened.

@@mjhay1830 where I used to live in UK sone service buses picked up school kids they were public vehicles and kids often were standing I dreaded as a shopper coming home on those buses kids were noisy shouting and you had a job to get them to move when it was your stop

The troubling thing is on many such home to school services many, especially on the upper deck are out of their seats and seldom wear seat belts even if they are fitted. I’m most pleased to hear no reports of fatalities.

Wow when he said double-decker bus tipped over in field I was amazed at how exactly the final image resembled what I imagined. Glad their don't seem to be many serious injuries. I'm sure the kids will be alright, if this was a bus full of old people i'd be way more worried.

I was a victim of a major bus crash last year on the M53 and I remember how traumatised people on the other buses were passing the scene. Some more traumatised than those who were involved with the crash itself. Sending love and prayers to your children and those involved in the crash and wishing them all a speedy recovery.

Most of our school bus services are contracted or whatever from Translink (the bus and train provider in NI), and they use their normal buses, including double deckers.
Maybe if they didn't keep shutting schools down, there wouldn't be a need for double deckers on bad country roads

The majority of Translink buses have seatbelts now. Only a small amount of very old buses do not, but this looks like a brand new bus. That doesn't mean anyone was wearing a seatbelt though. Lets just hope everyone is ok !

How fast was he going? Its almost impossible to overturn a Double-Decker.
It's not usual for double decker buses to flip over as I think the lean angle is around 40 degrees. Maybe best to wait until we know more.
I'm on that road regularly. The road is raised slightly above the fields as there is a lot of marshy land in the area. If the bus swerved off the road there would've been a bit of a drop making it flip on its side more easily. Fingers crossed everyone is alright

More people should know so that people are more aware of the danger of careless driving and tiredness, especially bus drivers. I guarantee the majority of school buses hsve hardly anyone actually wearing a seat belt. Learning from situations like this can truly save lives.
