Behind them is the same line of their own people shooting anyone who returns.

Ukraine suffered more than Russia during WW2. Check out the history. Germany swept south East and over ran Ukraine, Moscow was USSR priority, the other lands were expendable, to buy time. 3 years later, the USSR swept back. Germany destroyed as much as they could when retreating. USSR troops flattened what was left while chasing them back to Berlin.

John Kirby is semi-correct about the USSR and WWII history. The USSR was not an ally of the Allied Forces for the first 2 years of WWII. On August 23, 1939 Stalin/the USSR signed a non-aggression pact with Hitler/Germany, providing support and joint forces to Hitler. The USSR invaded Poland, Finland, Romania and the Baltic states. It was not until Hitler launched Operation Barbarosa and suprisingly turned coat and invaded Russia on June 22, 1941, that Stalin ran to the Allied Forces for life saving assistance, asking for money, food to keep the Russians from starving, medication, and equipment to replenish their troops in their effort to fight off and defeat Hitler/Germany who had betrayed them. Let's not give Russia more credit than they are owed, they were in the war for their own benefit and did not become our ally until they were about to lose everything to Germany. Once the war was over, the USSR went on it's own way ... enter the Cold War.

The Soviet Union was allied to Hitler, since August 1939. They started the war together, the Nazis and Stalin invaded Poland on September 1939. They even held a JOINT military parade in Warszaw to celebrate the victory! Then, Moscow immediately proceeded to invade Finland, and later the three Baltic countries, and then tried to take Romania from Bessarabia (Moldavia). Moscow later fought the Nazis only because it was invaded by them!
Not only this, but the casualties in WW2 were not "Russians" but Soviets: Moscow used its colonies to protect itself. 5 to 7 million Ukrainians died fighting the Germans, a much higher percentage of the population compared to the Russians, and many other "Soviet" casualties of the war were not Russians but Turkic people, Mongols, Tatars, from Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Siberia, Buriatia, etc, all populations previously enslaved by Moscow and forced to fight all the wars for Moscow. The Russian Empire should have been dissolved in the same way as the German State, but Europe was too weak and "civilized", and the USA was too dumb to oppose the foxes in Moscow.

They try not to focus on this side of their history in Russia. I was born and grew up in Soviet Union and I can testify that the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was a top secret up until late 80s when Gorbachev came to power. Until then we were all taught the same lie that Nazi Germany all of a sudden decided to invade USSR in June of 1941. The Finland campaign was never mentioned either.

Yes, plus Polish army re-created by deceived Polish prisoners. I mean 1. The Soviet Union attacked Poland in 1939 2. arrested Polish soldiers and deported to Siberia 3. when attacked by Nazi Germany in 1941 the SU said to the Poles: "now we need your help to fight Germans so let's be allies this time, and after the war you will have independent Poland." 4. Then the SU virtually occupied Poland for a few decades until the Solidarity movement defeated communism in Poland and consequently in Europe.
