  • A side-by-side comparison of the game Double Dragon between Nintendo 8-bit (Famicom/ NES) and SMS (Master System/ Mark III).
Note: The NES version of Double Dragon has a 2-player option, however, it is not simultaneous but rather alternating, similar to the early Super Mario Bros games.

Some people might rag about the flicker for SMS DD but we all forgave it for the Co-op. Co-op was a big feature back then. I noticed some people complain about the hit detection of the SMS version but I disagree. Hit detection was just fine for me as I can hit when I want to hit. I think what they are actually complaining about is the subpar stun mechanics. Even the NES has this issue. To be honest, I don't remember if this is arcade accurate or not.

This is one is a legit toss up.
The NES Double Dragon only had the single player option. There is a 2 player mode, but you take turns. Quite possibly because of this, they decided to go beyond the Arcade version and include new areas in the various stages. There is also a vs fighter mode.
The SMS version, goes for a more direct Arcade port. It features 2 player co-op.
Both are squeezing their sound chips to belt out those arcade tunes.
Both seem to manage similar character sizes. Flicker is present in both versions but more noticeable on the SMS (the price paid for 2 players).
The SMS version puts it palette to better use, in both the characters and the backgrounds.
There seems to be something a little wonky with certain enemies in the SMS version targeting one specific player (allowing the other to land uncontested blows).
I had both versions back in the day and both played well enough.

Master System is closer to the arcade in game play. It puts the Double in Double Dragon. You don't have to level up to earn moves. NES does have a bit more background quality, I'll give it that. In 2024, the NES still is a fun game, and being so different to the arcade it’s more fun to revisit. While with the master system there is less reason to come back to it, because it’s just a poorer version of the arcade without having much uniqueness.

@@alexojideagu It might have been king in Europe, but Tec Toy did all that heavy lifting in Brazil, not Sega. Hence why the official sales figures do not factor them in. By your logic the NES is the better selling console, because of all of the crappy Famiclones that come out of China to this very day.

Thank you to my brothers overseas. Bottom line DD on the NES is a little brawler that had way too much sugar, and why is it a 1 player at a time game? Master System version retain the 2 player co-op of the arcade.
      The masses are missing out!

O Master system sola o NES 8 bit
só não foi o melhor da quela época por causa do maldito monopólio da Nintendo sega wins.

Does it though? Sure, it has co-op, but it's deficient in other areas.
