Hey guys! I knew you guys have been WAITING for this video to come out pretty much since the beginning of my partnership with the Flute Center of New York, so I've actually been a bit nervous about releasing this review, haha! I worked especially hard on the sound set up (which you can read more about on my blog, linked further down in the description box!) to give you guys the most accurate representation of how these piccolos sound in real life. I hope you guys enjoy this one! If you're looking to purchase a Jupiter or Azumi instrument, make sure to check out Jupiter's "Silver Bells" promotional in collaboration with Hercules Stands!! You can get a free Hercules stand along with your instrument purchase! I've linked the promotional page in the description box as well, so don't forget to head on over there to fill out their form once you've made your purchase!
I have one of the metal piccolos, like William Bennett's, but I was using one of my school's wooden ones in our concert band when it was getting repaired, and it sounded amazing. I found it was a lot softer and I could get the low E and D notes, so I've been hoping to buy one of my own wooden ones, so this has helped with some choices. Thank You.
Hello! I am a bit late... but I wanted to say thanks because I had never known that you needed earplugs for playing piccolo. I recently started after around 3 years of flute and LOVE IT.
pedrogoldfinger I purchased one of these when I was in 5th grade. I still have it, and the only issue I have with it is that I can't play D. If I replace the foot joint, then I can play D, but the flute's sound isn't that great.
Infamous Blader i'm a fifth grader right now, lol but my dad is buying me a Yamaha flute for band, YFL-211s is the model I think. But it's $226.31 for the new packaged flute, case, and cleaning rod. I'm also a beginner, but i've been playing in band for 6 months with my school flute, but then my dad decided to buy a seperate on for me lol
I have a Yamaha 81 and I have the same issue with the middle E-flat and D. When I first started doubling on piccolo, I couldn't even make a sound on those two notes, but now the sound is just very muted and stuffy. However it is an amazing piccolo and has taken me a lot of places, state band for 2 years in a row, along with getting me in a superb orchestra. I just always thought it was my piccolo, but I guess not.
Yasmin Ballard yeah, it can cause a little of hearing problems i believe.. like when parents say "Dont play your music too loud in your headphones or you'll lose hearing" and stuff like that
I like the Jupiter piccolos pretty well for their headjoints, as I can play much more quietly in smaller groups, but the G# key drives me absolutely insane. Also, the split E mechanism is not new. I have been using a very, very old Armstrong piccolo with a split E mechanism. On piccolos, a split E mechanism makes working on the keywork such a pain, especially with all the tiny rods.
Yes indeed. By personal presence, I would rather, if all the piccolo's keys are basically half the size of the flute, that the keys like the G# also be proportionate with the other smaller keys, nearly half size as the C flute.
I play my school's yamaha 82 piccolo and I love it! Obviously it is probably a little different than the 62, but still similar. The Eb is still crazy sharp, but like she said, you can bend and fix the pitch easily on most notes. For Eb I have to drop my jaw AND look down a little bit. Great tone though and I've also found it easier to tune notes in the lower octaves. I haven't played anything other than Yamaha 82 as far as piccolos so I don't really have much to compare it to :)
I just bought An all composite piccolo for $109 on eBay and I can get all notes out with ease ( including the high b and c) and it has surprisingly ok tuning and good low notes
I LOVE the piccolo video, very helpful for knowing what kind of piccolo is best for you!!! Could you please do a piccolo tip videos for flutists struggling with piccolo?
Hey, but my school's piccolo brand Prelude AND Roy Benson, they have a full silver/metal/platinum skin and it does not 'get rounded' at the part when you are inserting the head into the body part. I am actually a flutist really, but i can still detect that i could play the Roy Benson one nicely which has a square embouchure hole rather than the Prelude that has a rounder embouchure hole. My teacher told me that every single brand in this enormous world has major differences among them. And that made my money fly away with a new false flute.
0Cherries :D Certain notes have alternate fingerings that are specifically for the piccolo and I know this because the teacher that I studied with for the last part of my undergrad was a piccolo specialist :)
Hey, I would love to hear your thoughts/review on the Di Zhao and Bulgheroni piccolos. When I tried a bunch of composite/resin piccolos ($600-2,200), I thought the Di Zhao was the most fun and delightful to play. It's like a mini Powell! I was shopping for a piccolo to play for outdoor concerts. My main piccolo is a Keefe. I didn't buy the Di Zhao because I developed a weird allergy to all grenadilla piccs, so bought something different in the end. But, people should give it a try. Also, I tried a used Bulgheroni once (only for a two minutes though-wasn't in the market for a pic at the time), such an awesome sweet sound! I wish I had a tuner to test it. They are hard to find!
I'm not a flute/piccolo player and both reviewed piccolos sound identical to my ears. What surprised me was the price difference of approx. $600. If I was buying a piccolo, I would go for the one which has a better and significant tone difference. Quite honestly, when an elderly lady is listening to a performance, she would have no idea which type of piccolo she just heard. She would only care about the fullness of sound and professionalism of that piccolo player.
Jupiter piccolos cases actually look similar to Jupiter flutes! I have a Jupiter JFL-507s, and both have a thing at the front to put the cleaning rod, and both Jupiters cases have red fabric on the inside!
I own a Yamaha 62, a pretty old one actually! It's more than 10 years old and it still plays amazing! However I do find the first octave to be sooooo flat, It drives me insane :( but overall It's such an amazing instrument
I have a Jupiter piccolo (Intermediate level made of resin with a silver head joint and keys) and I love it. I do have problems playing soft on the higher registers, like the one song we have that has an above the staff F at pianissimo...most of the time I drop an octave and blend in with the flutes 3:) lol Mine did come with the silver paper also and I kept using it since, like you, I have acidic sweat. My old flute is so tarnished it looks like it's 100 years old and it's only about 20. Thanks for the review, I feel better about my brand choice now (It was between a Jupiter and a Yamaha when I bought mine but I got a better price with the Jupiter which is a big plus when you're a starving college student pretending to be a part time starving musician LOL)
Jupiter has DEFINITELY upped their flute/piccolo game!! And ah, yes, then it's a really great idea for you to keep the tarnish strip. Probably would be a good idea to switch out the tarnish strip once every 6 months or so (I also recall someone else saying every 3 months?? Not sure), as the strip gets less and less effective over time. They're super cheap and available in most music stores (online and in person).
JustAnotherFlutist I bought "spare" strips when I got my piccolo. My Pearl flute also came with a tarnish strip in the case. My Jupiter piccolo case has the double latch though...I wonder if the single latch is a new thing...I only got my piccolo this past summer.
You appear to have a tear drop lip, which gives a slightly wider air stream, therefore, you may find wider and more rectangular holes less challanging. I have a similar lip and issues playing my flute and piccalo. Thank you for the video, as I am looking for a new Grenadilla wood body piccolo. I need to try a few out and want to experiment with wood and silver heads. I am looking for a warmer sound with reduced volume if possible. I have large, stubby fingered man hands, that the piccolo almost dissapears in when playing. I have been playing for 30 years with breaks due to life getting in the way. Thank you.
Thank you, very useful information. . I used to have 3 Yamaha Piccolos YPC-62 but have sold it out all as I have rash on my lower lip chin. . At fist I though I was allergic to wood. Until I have try my friend's piccolo and find out that what I was allergic is not wood, but the bore oil that I rub on my Yamaha piccolo. Blaaaaaaaaaaa. I have bought YPC-62 three time and though difference piccolo will stop rash on my lower lip chin. . Now I know what cause, can you suggestion what kind of bore oil you use for wood piccolo? I should paste some on my chin overnight and see if I allergic or not. Thanks. Greeting from Chiang Mai, Thailand.
@@ironmatic1 Little or not, but appreciate your suggestion. I now use YCC-32 but I own a wood flute. Will try to see if coconut oil works for me. Thanks a lot, greeting from Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Hello. First off, great video. Very informative and systematic in your presentation. My question is, what kind of ear plug do you use for the right ear? I don't believe I've ever seen that model of plug in my local hardware store. Not to sound like a weirdo, but I play a Yamaha C-fife, but a lot of your tips have been very applicable to the Yamaha C-fife especially for the high notes. Thanks and keep up the excellent work!
You are one my favorite TH-camrs, I'm a big artistic person. I like to act and sing. I also play trumpet, piano,(soon) ukulele, and flute. You have inspired me to become a musician well I try to get acting going. Thank you for making these videos, your amazing and funny. Also question, what is a good beginner piccolo?
I play the Yamaha 32 Piccolo and it is amazing! I play for my school orchestra and the county orchestra; my friends in the Orchestra call me the devil of the Orchestra 😂😂
Whats the difference between a wooden piccolo like in this video (which does not have a metal head but with a wooden body and a guide basically to place your mouth perfectly on the piccolo) and a Roy Benson or Prelude piccolos (which have those)? Thanks
+JustAnotherFlutist please do a review on a burkart resona piccolo vs a yamaha 81 piccolo!! waiting for a review like that to come out.. because there are none
could you do headjoints? and id love somekne to reviee an older haynes piccolo the all silver ones. ive been told theyre the exception to the rule that metal piccolos are more shrill
I am so glad that you did this video but I do I have a question. I have been playing a piccolo since august of this year got my marching band and I struggle with playing quite like for slower pieces do you have any advice?
Definitely a preference thing ;) There are so many cases out there, and it's really up to you to figure out which one works best for what you do and fits your taste! :D
Is Geminharat (I hope I spelled it right) a good brand for the piccolo? Also I don't know if there is any difference between the sound in the metal and wooden piccolos
can you review one of the really cheap piccolos for amazon and ebay , i wanna get started on piccolo (i already play flute) and wanna see if its decent
Hi! I love you videos so much they are my inspiration to practice. I was just wondering if you could do a video on your practice routine such as what you do in general, tone exercises that you use, technique exercises that you use ect. Lots of love from the UK!
Haha, I really should. I have been meaning to ask--would you guys be interested in a practice session livestream? I've been slowly figuring out how live streaming for flute playing would work (it's part of the reason I invested so much time in getting the sound right for this video).
JustAnotherFlutist yeeeeeessssssss😀 it would be an honor to learn from you because I actually have all state band auditions in January. soooooo please do a live stream 😢🎵🎶🎼
I explained it a bit in one of my last FCNY videos, so you can go there for a bit more info than what I'll probably botch in this comment, haha! Essentially, when you press the keys for high E-natural, usually the key that is one down from the G-sharp lever remains open. On flutes with the split-E mechanism, that key closes! It stabilizes the high E-natural and makes it less resistant. :)
FarfalleAlfredo my flute has one too and the function of the split e is to make sure that the e stays in tune because E is probably the worst note to tune on the flute and the piccolo
Kiara Eijo Funny thing, in my band we have trouble keeping in tune on the D, not the E. I don't hear the subtle differences though in tuning so I have no idea. My partner will either adjust herself if it's not too bad, or she'll whisper how I need to adjust. I failed first year music theory because I couldn't identify intervals by ear...I was almost always off by at least a full step...teacher would play a third, I'd hear a fourth. Or he'd play a fifth and I'd hear a seventh.
Great videos. Thanks very much. Very useful. A little over the top with the production sometimes. Like sometimes every word does the fashionable flicky edit thing. Can't we just hear you talk. What you say is good.
Would love one of these until I found out the price. My currant piccolo I bought from a fellow piccolo player for $75. It's an Armstrong and pretty old. It actually works just fine for me in a community band. I played it recently in 2 concerts and was happy with the sound. Even got some compliments. I general just play flute in the band but had to fill in for our regular piccolo player. Would consider upgrading if I had to play it more. Loved your review. It was well done and entertaining.
Joanna (sorry if I spelled it wrong) I play in my band at school, and never really have any time that me and V.V. (My teacher) can just sit down and practice together, is there a way I can try to cope with this or should I just let it happen?
I've been playing the flute for 5 years and I was interested in trying the piccolo. Is it the same fingering on the piccolo as it is the flute? Thanks!
Emily Whalen yes, they are. It's just if you play a normal concert f(as you would on the flute) it will come out as If you were play high f(an octave higher than concert f)
I would like to ask you ONE really important question ... What earplugs are those ? I've never found one that fitted me well ... Any brand or type of earplug ? :D Thank You
My orchestra just bought us two Powell signature piccolos!! I was wondering if you have any tips on piccolo playing? Because im playing the picc in the Ravel and there are SO many 3rd octave trills from "pp" and its so hard to play in tune my conductor just called me out today sigh :/ Ive tried alternate fingerings and stuff too.
Oh boy, playing the piccolo in tune takes a lot of experimentation, as one person's experience on the piccolo is always going to be a tad different than everyone else's. The most important thing is, ironically, NOT to listen to yourself the most. To play truly in tune with the people around you, you need to listen to THEM more than yourself. When you do this, your mind will naturally want your tuning to fit in with theirs and will cause your embouchure to do what it takes to play in tune. It's really weird feeling at first, but you'll get used to it!!
Kiara Eijo doesn't work for the high register though, if you ever tried haha. The tuner can't pick up such high pitched sounds. My middle and Low register are mostly in tune.
Sure now you tell me after 30+ years, to wear ear plugs... I don't know why I was always told NOT to wear ear plugs while playing. Only, My ear is suffering, cause of it. Lipping... Yes, I was taught that about 20+ years ago, not by any of my band directors, but by the awesome dealer that I would go through!!! i was trying to get my flute adjusted, when he noticed, that not only did the flute need to be adjusted. But many other minor issues. He called me the steel lip player. Then he explained over tones, that you just increase air speed and change of embouchure to successfully obtain or attain that note! After he figured out that it was indeed a key leak and not my embouchure producing a week note, I wanted to find out how much it would cost to also get my flute polished. My student flute was so tarnished, there was actually a pink tinge on the nickle. When I asked about it, he said well, it would be great, but the fact that it's nickle, you won't really be able to get the instrument polished back to it's new sparkle... So he introduced me to my new step up and current flute that I have been playing ever since, my Gemeinhardt 3shb. Anyway, I kind of want to try this trial thing, because it's time to upgrade my Gemeinhardt 4sp (piccolo) but not ready because I know I'll want to buy, and I don't have any funds stashed away for an awesome purchase... Well that and the wife would definitely kill me for a large investment like this.

JustAnotherFlutist did you get my comment it’s inoperative lol
I just searched for Piccolo vs Yamcha.
But Autocorrect did write Piccolo vs Yamaha.
so I landed here, dafuq
Oh hai 🙃

Could you review some of the cheap $60 flutes and piccolos from Ebay just for the fun of it? :)
pedrogoldfinger I purchased one of these when I was in 5th grade.
ArcticJessie 226$?? I have the same model but mine was 1031CHF (1CHF is a bit more than 1$). how was mine almost 5 times more expensive...
lalas best $226* $1*
Infamous Blader your piccolo has a footjoint?
I actually like the sound of the Jupiter for my taste but I think that you sound better on the Yamaha :)
I don't even play the flute but I enjoy watching your videos
Hahaha! Random flute knowledge never hurt anybody, ya know...
omg lol the way she said"don't use it as a lip balm by the way"its almost like she's done it ;D
I have a Yamaha 81 and I have the same issue with the middle E-flat and D. Yasmin Ballard personally I use Hearos when I play picc in the orchestra
Yasmin Ballard yeah, it can cause a little of hearing problems i believe.. like when parents say "Dont play your music too loud in your headphones or you'll lose hearing" and stuff like that
Yasmin Ballard to answer yes she is wearing them in this video
I never wear them when i play piccolo. I can bust out a high C and it doesn't hurt my ears. Probably should wear them, but meh.
Yasmin Ballard I should probably wear them too.. ohhh well
A video on headjoint upgrades for intermediate/beginner flutes would be awesome! What you're doing is phenomenal, by the way.
Zachary Coronado A lot of them are outrageously large.
It seems like the are the same size as the flute g# key sometimes.
Yes indeed.
By personal presence, I would rather, if all the piccolo's keys are basically half the size of the flute, that the keys like the G# also be proportionate with the other smaller keys, nearly half size as the C flute.

0Cherries :D yes
Yuppers, indeed. There are alternate fingerings to make some notes sound more in tune, but for the most part, they're the same. :)

There about the same it's just same your first finger and second are togther insted of appart
0Cherries :D they are very alike
Could you maybe do a piccolo alternate fingering video or maybe a video on the pearl pfp-105E
i own the pfp-165E, (the same thing as the 105 but it has a grenadilla wood head joint). it is absolutely fantastic, especially for the price.
Oh my god you play scales so beautifully on piccolo. My heart.... it's broken.
Can you compare the Resona Picc with the Burkart Professioanl Picc?
I recently bought a Chinese Dizi. I don't even own a western flute but I still find myself here watching every video. :)

Ok. Thank you.
I actually got the Yamaha on trial but I actually bought the Resona by Burkhart and I've been quite happy with that.
Yes! I was waiting for this😍
I was too busy shopping for my outfit for my band concert. FLUTES!
Dashi run run run!!!
Could you review the Robert Bigio Zirconium flute crown/stopper from the Flute Center of NY? 💕 So curious about this supposed improvement of tone!
Can you try Dizhao piccolo?
How do trials work?Do they send you an instrument to try out then have you send it back?

its not suited for orchestra, plastic is too shrill.
Will the Yamaha crack easily? I will primarily be playing indoors with air conditioning.

I have the yamaha 62 and I also noticed the middle register E flat being a bit weak compared to the rest. how were you able to make it even???
What earplugs do you suggest for an intermediate flutist?
Another fantastic review! Thanks!
Where is the split e on the piccolo?
I am so glad that you did this video but I do I have a question. I have been playing a piccolo since august of this year got my marching band and I struggle with playing quite like for slower pieces do you have any advice?
Hey can you do a piccolo LefreQue video, I've been looking into it but I'm not sure if I want to get one yet. If you could that would be fantastic! :)
Can u review intermediate Yamaha open hole flutes plz
Omg I love the Yamaha case ❣️And do you think a duel flute and piccolo case is a good idea or is it more of a preference thing ? 😁
Definitely a preference thing ;) There are so many cases out there, and it's really up to you to figure out which one works best for what you do and fits your taste! :D
Do anyone know how much a trial for flutes/piccolos costs? And does the price depend on the cost of the flute?
Thanks Joanna :)
My pleasure ^_^
Is Geminharat (I hope I spelled it right) a good brand for the piccolo? Also I don't know if there is any difference between the sound in the metal and wooden piccolos
Hello! I love your videos!! I would LOVE to know what microphone you're using here - it really sounds fantastic, especially for piccolo!
how do you tune a piccolo with the rod
can you review one of the really cheap piccolos for amazon and ebay , i wanna get started on piccolo (i already play flute) and wanna see if its decent
That would be so beneficial thank you :)
JustAnotherFlutist yeeeeeessssssss😀 it would be an honor to learn from you because I actually have all state band auditions in January. soooooo please do a live stream 😢🎵🎶🎼
Can you do a like “cheap piccolos and flutes from amazon VS Named Branned Expensive Piccolos and Flutes?”
how does the 3 instrument per trail work
Can you explain the split E mechanism to me? I feel like I may know what you're talking about but I'm not quite sure lol
My flute has one and I have no idea what it does lol
JustAnotherFlutist Oh gotcha, thank you!
Can you review the Pearl 105E piccolo?
quick question do you have to pay for the piccolo or put a deposit on the piccolo when you take the instruments out on trial?
Amazing review!
Thank you! :D
One question: What is a tarnish strip used for?
Parv Gosai to keep the instrument from tarnishing
Could you review the Pearl Dolce Series Flute Model 695?? :)
Great videos. Thanks very much. Very useful. A little over the top with the production sometimes. Like sometimes every word does the fashionable flicky edit thing. Can't we just hear you talk. What you say is good.
Thank you for the review.
.
I do have the question, does YPC-62 Wood head joint fit YPC-32 Body? Thanks.
Yes it does - I'm playing a YPC 32 body with a YPC 62 headjoint
I've never seen a piccolo with a cork in that area before.
The plastic protection thing is very typical for Yamaha. They put this on their recorders as well.
How do you know the type of flute you have?
Joanna (sorry if I spelled it wrong) I play in my band at school, and never really have any time that me and V.V. (My teacher) can just sit down and practice together, is there a way I can try to cope with this or should I just let it happen?
Btw I am a flutist
P.S. my teacher plays clarinet
what is your personal piccolo❓ 😁
I've been playing the flute for 5 years and I was interested in trying the piccolo. Is it the same fingering on the piccolo as it is the flute? Thanks!
Emily Whalen yes, they are. It's just if you play a normal concert f(as you would on the flute) it will come out as If you were play high f(an octave higher than concert f)
I would like to ask you ONE really important question ... What earplugs are those ? I've never found one that fitted me well ... Any brand or type of earplug ? :D Thank You
OH! Remember another thing: can you maybe try out some wood head joints ? :)
I love your videos so much thank you.
Thank YOU for watching! :D
Janelle Yuen Practice long tones with a tuner
Kiara Eijo doesn't work for the high register though, if you ever tried haha. The tuner can't pick up such high pitched sounds. My middle and Low register are mostly in tune.
YASS have been waiting for this video :DD
I hope you like it!! :D
please do a review on pearl piccolo!💖
Pretty much the oboe/flute combo lol. I play the clarinet so this from my perspective a lot of the stuff isn't much different.
Yamaha piccolo definitely sounds more solid and sweeter as compared to Jupiter.
YAY piccolos!!
I'll just stick with playing my western concert flute, fife flute and pan flute, and forgo the piccolo. : )
I just ordered a silver and gold piccolo I am a in a professional Flutest
