I'm an INTP. Went into University as an English Major, then Biology, then Accounting, then Accounting and Finance. Worked in Finance for about 3 years, taught myself how to program and got a job doing that. Then got a Masters in Operations Research but decided to stay with being a software engineer. Someone recently offered me a side job doing financial planning and I was like "that sounds interesting." :) I crack myself up sometimes.

Thank you, this was very accurate and helpful. I recently discovered that I'm an INTP and everything fits perfectly. I'm 23 years old now, and I started university at 17, changed my major three times, which caused a lot of worries and trouble both for me and for my family. The third time I stuck with it and will finish my education soon. I'd say when I was around 21-22 I got a very precise picture of what I want to do with my life and where I want to go. Have had odd jobs throughout my life, never stuck anywhere for too long. I'm thinking of starting a business now related to my education and be self-employed, and even a year ago I did not have enough confidence in my own worldview to do that. And now it's like every month I'm more and more confident and my doubts and insecurities are lessening as time goes on. So my advice to all young INTPs who don't know where to go and what to do is to keep looking and believe in yourself. Find a subject or a field that you love and become an expert in this chosen field. Once you're an expert you can also be self-employed or go into research and not struggle with work any more.

Yep. I'm 51 and have my own business, no employees, investment consultancy. It's perfect. The time to research and think and seek truth, plus no dealing with idiots. Even lead me to find the truth in the bible by chance, perhaps the key to ending anxiety about the future. Good luck to you anyway.

Yeah, i think the biggest turning point in my life so far (I'm 18) was really understanding that if you think you can, you can, and if you think you can't, you can't. It's all internal feedback loops of confidence or self-doubt, and if you understand this then you can consciously manipulate yourself into succeeding by simply shifting your perception of the task at hand (and i guess also your ability to do them). Don't view it as boring either, view it as a fun challenge. See Colin Hiles, he explains this stuff much better than myself (though I'm proud to have figured it out before finding him). Find what you're passionate about, and if you're also good at it and it provides at least some degree of value to the world at large, go for it.
The other thing is that people won't respect you unless they see that you respect yourself.
Also be radically honest and blunt (mainly to yourself, but also to others), you'll gain self-respect and people will find your blunt comments funny.

I am an older INTP and I am having such a hard time finding and keeping work. I was just working with a group of younger extroverts and I just could not stand it. I don't know what I am going to do at this point. I feel I have something to offer but I cannot find my place. It is especially hard since I have gotten older. I think I know my talents but I guess I need to find my place.

I'm am with you there. In the past, people like us either were lucky enough to be born rich not to have to work so that we can go and work on our passion, or have someone, a donor or investor who would provide us with money to work on whatever we choose to, but when we are not in that situation, we can end-up homeless. Let me guess, you start a new job with new things to do, you are motivated and excited, then, soon enough the novelty wears off and you find yourself wanting to do something else, something new, or you have discovered some new passion, and you feel like you wasting your time in that job you were once so keen on doing. And then you stop doing your work, you just do enough not to get fired, while trying to get some more time for your other passions. The problem is that we are not made for "jobs" that require the regular routine production of the same thing. We like experiments with many different things and be able to jump from one project to the next, and these projects are completely different. One day I want to create an app, next I get interested in woodwork and want to do nothing else but that for a while... etc yep, no place for us. The only way forward is to get some passive income so that you have a source of revenue that doesn't require you to work to pay your bills. That what I am starting to do by investing in properties. At some point in the future, hopefully, I would get enough passive income not to have to worry about getting a job.

Fe and Te are not why INTPs and INFPs lack impact on the outer world.
It's because there blind spot function is Se. The one they don't even consider or hold value in at all.
They both value there 4th function (Fe or Te) a lot actually.

Dont use your personality type as an excuse to be lazy. easier said than done but its something I live by in order to produce more success in the material world. Although I do fuck up and listen to shit like this sometimes when I cant sleep and cant do work.

27 and I've been here and there, studying this and that. I've always succeeded in whatever I tried (alone). Always passed any exam I took without really working that hard, even when everyone around me struggled.
I've finally managed to be a teacher but ho boy. Hardest ordeal of my life. I'm permanently in contact with people, especially young ones (it's mainly middle/high school pupils). I have a lot to learn and I actually have to abdicate and accept that someone has to teach me how to teach... Anyway, it's really really hard and I'm still wondering if it's meant for me, this generation of teenagers is crazy and doesn't care about anything apart from either make-up or Fortnite. Gotta earn money and there are numerous advantages so... just have to get used to get out of that FAMOUS comfort zone that's soooo hard to get out for us, INTP... I've heard it's our only way to really grow up. Already noticed some changes but wow, it's exhausting.

Nesterou im 27 as well INTP and have been considering teaching , is have to finish my BA first, but thanks, I’ve been thinking it’s prob not for me. I also get pretty frustrated with the younger generation on which I encounter here and there.

    • @Nesterou
      @Nesterou 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@TJmusic24 Still didn't figure it out but in the end we all have to work, no job is perfect, especially for "us".
The hardest thing for INTP's is to face others' difficulties. The teacher has somehow to imagine himself as a student to overcome the difficulties. And that's the hardest part, because when you are good in a field, it generally means that you probably had difficulties at some point but in the end they were ok because you mastered them quite quickly. In the case of INTP's, it's generally alone.
I teach English to French pupils, and languages weren't a difficulty for me and I never quite thought "I had a good teacher, therefore I'm good at this".
The hardest part of being a teacher is to be in constant re-assessment of yourself and your abilities. Also, the first years are hell because you have to find who you are, who you want to be and what role you want to endorse: you can't be 100% yourself in front of the class, it's kinda like being an actor. That's hard for introverts, but even if I'm struggling and crying at least once a week, my brain tells me that it's the right thing to do somehow.
In a few words, being a teacher is learning humility. And I think myself and some INTP need that a lot as we are often successful without doing too much. Good students don't necessarily make good teachers.

What jobs do INTP's do? I'm 34 and have been a support worker for 10 years, before then was in the Navy (Which I left early due to depression at the time). I'm not that fond of the support work I do now but I work flexible hours and the people who I support are actually relatively independent so the job is very easy, but I feel I need to move on because of the bad pay and I'm not feeling content.
My hobbies are reading non fiction books on a wide range of subjects (Whatever interests me at the time), I go running (to loose weight. I took it up 5 months ago), I play Poker (I make a profit throughout the course of a year, but not enough to make a living, due to low end bank roll atm), I watch movies and TH-cam videos and I go out for a few beers maybe 3 times a month with a couple of close friends.
So yeah, that's me..... Any Ideas what I can do? I'm thinking about learning Accountancy, but I'm not sure it suits my personality, another thing I've thought about is Forensic Science. I've starting to teach myslef computer coding to see if I can get into that, but after only a couple of days I'm already getting frustrated with it, whenever I get "errors" etc, not really enjoying it. pffffff.
Any help or ideas would be great. Thanks

google intp careers, i have the same experience with coding but just started again after doing a cyber security bootcamp and changing my perspective on technology coding as a engineer seems great for intps because you can kind of be the weird person you most likely are and work towards independence and working remotely anywhere you want to be as a highly skilled developer and you dont have to go to school for 4 years or more since the technology is always changing rapidly and the universities cant even keep up since all the info needed to learn any language is free online. ive done over 50 jobs and travelled half the world but spent the past 8 years riding a bike for money and thats done now. Im gonna stick with the programming and move towards developer since there seems to be more work then people, you can branch off into other areas such as crypto currency, blockchain dapps, cyber security, and data science when you get some experience and what do intps love more then harvesting data figure out how the world works and what will happen next.

As INTP, we are interested in many things. We easily get distracted when new stuff suddenly interest us that leads to abandoning an old interest.
To know what really sticks for us (aka 'passion') is to do some sort of trials. For example, playing the guitar interests you. The trial could be like mastering 5 songs. If you give up before you completed the trial (or finished it, but don't look forward to continuing), then playing the guitar really is not a true passion for you. Consistency of action is the true definition of passion.
