    One thing that Fuji does very wrong is... Their app!
    You're right about the update function, it's very cool, but it's amost their only good thing about the app.
    I had heard terrible things about it and foolishlly thought that people were "overeacting and exagerating" but it's been unstable for most people (to the point where they never use it), with 2 main functions (uploading images to your phone and using it as a remote to control the camera) that are lackluster.
    I work in social media so I just need basic uploading capabilities (everything else is a bonus), Canon offered something far better but I have used Panasonic too, wich was nowhere near stellar, so I imagined it would be like that...
    But it's worst, far worst and I think it's a shame.
    Not really because I don't expect a compagny smaller than Canon, Sony or Nikon, to be better than them on every front. I can't blame them too much cuz I think they don't have the ressources to do a good job in that area too, as their already making innovations in the camera bodies and lenses. And I, personnaly, can live with this like that, even for my job. But I think it's a missed opportunity for them.
    Imagine that it was in fact better that what Canon and Sony* are doing, imagine that we had a tight integration between our phones and our cameras. In term of ideas, I don't think it's very difficult, they're all doing the same things, but more or less refined; in term ressources, it seems like it would be very taxing but... "Retro feel and look but futuristic capabilities".
    It would turn heads, give them a lot of traction, including among young people and give them a very good place in the long run, in the saturated market of photography.
    *(in fact Sony is moving in this direction with the A1, that you can couple, as an external monitor, with their latest - but very expensive - Experia phone)

      I think the biggest problem that they all have is that they can talk to the app with bluetooth but they have to connect wifi to transfer images. So, the camera is fighting against any other wifi in the area to get the connection.

    Not to mention it has the BEST manual focus peaking that allows me to use all my favorite OLD lenses that are gold paired to my XT3. BTW the ergonomics of my camera is exactly the ergonomic I 100% love!

    • @avarmadillo
      @avarmadillo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ABSOLUTELY. As a fully manual video shooter Fuji's Peaking is state of the art---the industry standard. The only thing approximating the Fuji Peaking is the Black Magic 4 and 6k pocket cameras, but still Fuji is the better of the two. Pair the X-T4, with its IBIS and Rokinon X mount cinema lenses and Fuji peaking and you've got an awesome run and gun, cinematic combination that yields awesome results.

    Owner of X-T30, totally agree on 1 and 2 of wrongs. Sometimes I take my old D7000 and gosh how incredibly well it feels in hand as well as to control! Then I recall it's quite a bulky and heavy piece of equipment, which, as not a pro, I don't really want to bear with me in my trips... Still think Fuji can improve ergonomics without increasing their cameras size and weight. Maybe, also makes sense to ask ItalDesign to look into the problem? Dunno :) . I had to buy a hot shoe handle to kind of mitigate the issue with handling comfort. Another two cents to wrongs I could add is the shutter release button. It's quite soft to me, and I sometimes get false shots. Even with the add-on button top it's still the case.

    I have been a Nikon shooter since the 70s, but I tried the Fuji X100F and just loved taking pictures with it. I loved all the dials and buttons and it just made me feel more creative. Since then I have purchased the XT-3 and sadly my Nikon D500 and D750 haven’t had much use. One of the biggest benefits to Fuji shooters, which I think you may have overlooked in your video, is the fantastic support that Fuji provides if you have a question or problem. When you call the Fuji Help line, the people working there know the cameras, shoot with the cameras, and can help you out on the spot. Nikon has a help line but every time I called them the tech had to refer to the cameras manual. But the techs at Fuji are amazing and it is great to know that you can contact them with any little, or big question, 7 days a week and there will be someone there to help you out. I can’t say enough good things about Fuji and I thank you for all of the Fuji videos that you have put out.

    Hi Booray - great video and thanks for posting! One thing about the locking of the drive mode - it's very easy to sort this:- just go to the wrench menu and go to "Buttons and Dials" then scroll down to "Lock" and set to "Function Selection", then just select the drive mode to lockout and any others that you want to be locked. Then go back to "Lock" and select "Selected Functions" and any that you "Locked" will be inoperative. It's a great function of the camera and using "Lock" you can set the camera up to be as minimalist or function rich as you wish!

      yes... having the locks on those doors can actually be a door-saver - just recently saw the battery-door being absent on a nikon - no door lock - and the owner hadn’t even noticed when it popped off - a tiny bit of friction in the opening sliding direction - that puppy is gone!

    Great video, Booray! The other thing I think that Fuji gets right is that they have two SD card slots. Not CF, not XQD, just two SD card slots. How long will it take for Nikon to get that right? Three generations of mirrorless cameras? Come on, Nikon. Get in the Game, or don't play. Two SD card slots are essential for covering Events, Portraits, everything. One other thing, their cameras are so intuitive, it just makes you want to shoot more. What is better than that? Dials where you want them, that let you adjust the principal operations: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. When was the last time you saw Nikon or Canon provide and aperture ring on their lenses. Fuji also gives you great glass to choose from. You want f1.4 aperture? They have it. They are just Awesome. I went from shooting FF Nikon for years to Fuji crop sensor, and haven't looked back. Way to go, Fuji!

    About your point on price, I’m able to price out the X-T4, the new 70-300mm, the newer 10-24mm, an extra battery, and a charger for less than the price of the R5, which is what I WAS going to get, but decided on going with Fuji. I’m actually quite excited to get my new setup. It’ll be a nice change coming from Nikon.

    I happen to love the ergonomics. Maybe that’s due to my starting out with & shooting for decades with old school 60s/70s non grip bodies, plus the fact tha I like a smaller body. I’m also not a professional, so I don’t walk around for long periods gripping my camera. It’s slung across my shoulder with a minimalist Oeak Design strap, flinging it up into shooting position for a few shots & back down to it’s slinging stride.

  • @raymeedc

    I, too, shoot with Classic Chrome. Provia, Asta, etc. add a bit or more pizzaz to a photo, which EyE used to like, but now stick to the more toned down realistic take offered by Chrome. At 72, EyE too was brought up on Kodachrome, hence the possibly biased “realistic”” interpretation.

    Great video. Im in a similar situation. Been shooting Canon most of my 17 year career but have had flirts with Sony and most every other major brand over the years. Started to take an interest in the Fuji recipes to spark some creativity and change my work up a bit. Bought an X-E4 to test the waters. Loved it but its too small and lacking in features, so I just bought an X-T4 today. I still have my Canon R6, but Im going to see how I like the X-T4 and if I could use it for my work. If I can, it will be way cheaper than the R6 and some RF L lenses, even if I went for the Fuji 50mm f/1 which seems like a killer portrait lens and its half the price of the RF 85 f/1.2 Im also very excited about the upcoming Fuji GFX 50S Mark II, which will come in at only $3,999. I will definitely be renting one and strongly consider owning one at that price.

    I have recently switched to a Fuji XT4 too and love it. My two main recommendations for improvement would be first to swap the side doors back to how the XT3 had it. When the camera is tethered or even with an external mic the wires are blocking part of the flip out screen.
    Second, it would make more sense for the single shot drive selector underneath the ISO dial to be at the end. That way you can push it all the way to the end without looking. Makes no sense to me that now the HDR mode is in that 'privileged' position.

    I would like a lock on the exposure compensation dial, or at least require more force to change the setting. At times I have been reacting quickly to some photo opportunity, and then happen to notice on the LCD that the image is way over exposed. Then I discover that the exp. comp. dial has been accidently moved.

    Interesting comparisons, too, between using Fuji vs Canon. My first digital was the Canon S3 IS, which had a fantastic grip, great zoom, took amazing low light photos (underwater in a submarine in Alaska), plus a great sports mode and fully articulating screen...but the tiniest LCD with the biggest bezels...it ran on AA batteries; it needed the Lensmate adapter in order to use filters. Couldn't bear to get rid of it, so it was recently converted to an infrared camera.
    But now Fuji is our brand of choice for all the reasons you listed. Love the colors, the film simulations, the dials, the customization of buttons. These cameras are a joy to use.

    I know people are going to hate me for saying it...but here it goes. I thought of fuji before buying my camera. The look of those cameras is (chef's kiss) magnifique! But when i considered their pro lenses and the equivalency i understood it. If you buy a R6 and a 24-105 f4 and 70-200 f4 you get the same depth of field that you get with xt4 and their f2.8 pro zooms just because of the crop sensor. Especially when you consider the price of those lenses its practically the same!! The only difference in price is that of the R6 with 800 more but you get FF and equivalent depth of field as the XT4. What is more weight is about the same! I know that we fall for the marketing that the crop factor applies only to the focal length but that isn't true. Sure the lens has an aperture of 2.8 but the sensor reads f4. And that is not just me saying it. Tony Northrup has a video about it as well as Slanted Lens (the latter is a more recent video). If Fuji produce f2 apsc zoom lenses then and only then will they be actually close to f2.8 (actually f3.1). In the end is what works for you but i just wanted to put that thought out there

Shooting with a canon or nikon 700-200 2.8 is totally different from fuji’s 50-140. And we re not talking abot dof, af speed,noise, etc because the fuji would lose badly in all of these aspects

Unpopular opinion, my Sony always gets better pics most of the time compared to Fuji and also quite easy to handle . Even when paired to the cheapest lens, the Sony fails to fault on image quality . The only time I see Fuji doing better is in skin tones . The Sony also feels faster to shoot and comfortable to hold . The pictures are cleaner and crispier . I’d add one more note about the locks- the aperture ring. When shooting in-studio with the 56mm portrait lens I’m constantly seeing my exposure drastically change only to find the the aperture ring has shifted 1-2 stops just from holding the camera. Not all lenses are as bad as the 56mm, but that particular lens is impossible to use without the aperture ring shifting.

One issue I have - although Fuji form factor is what it is - is not being able to use Peak Design plates on the base of my X100V. My problem, perfect world, etc., etc. I'm thinking of upgrading to the X-T4 (not for the plate issue mentioned above, I must say, but to move from max 10-minute video limit on the X100V to the greater flexibility with video the X-T4 offers), and I was wondering, Booray, if you've filmed with the X-T4 and what, if any, lenses you would suggest? Thanks, Booray I always enjoy your videos. Coming up on two years switching from Canon to mirrorless myself I totally agree with your pros and cons. For me, the dials are what I've come to love the most. There is no camera that allows you to switch to manual and back faster. Combined with the command dials, simply the best. I do miss the d-pad on the 100v. My take is why would Fuji separate this on different cameras? I also use a small grip like yours on my X-T3. I'd love to upgrade to a T-4 but my T-3 is still going strong.

    Autofocus is the obvious thing Fuji gets wrong. I have one Sony and one Fuji. I enjoy using the Fuji much more, but for events with movement involved the Sony is always my first choice. My XS-10 is supposed to be one of the best focusing Fuji cameras, but still sometimes it hunts like an old DSLR and eye AF is extremely unreliable. With the Sony I never think about AF. I lift the camera and the Sony finds the eye instantly without failing. I love the Fuji but I am just amazed at how big the difference in AF is, so it is kind of strange not to mention it as a weakness.

    Booray, I’m also a predominantly Canon shooter. Now that you’ve had the xt4 for awhile, any chance you might do a comparison of the fuji 16-55 f2.8 on the xt4 versus the canon 24-70 f2.8 (which i’m presuming you probably had and used)? Also, i totally agree with on the seeming step backwards by fuji when they remove their D-Pads and make us do screen swipes. Maybe we can start a write in campaign? Craig

    • @BoorayPerry

      I would totally support that right in campaign. I might do a comparison video in the future but it's tough to do because my Canon lens is quite a bit older than my Fuji lens and one is for a DSLR the other one is for mirrorless, one is for full frame the other one is for crop sensor...

    It’s a little surprising that image quality didn’t rise to one of your pros or cons. Since you went from full frame to a crop sensor, I would think image quality would be one of the first things you would have discussed. Fuji colors, film simulations and ergonomics are all excellent points of discussion, but for professionals and hobbyists alike, image quality concerns or praise shouldn’t be left out out of the mix.

    • @BoorayPerry
      @BoorayPerry  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point but the truth is that I feel we have reached a point where image quality from any camera is good. The technology has progressed to the point where any professional camera will produce image quality that is sufficient for clients, leaving us to consider other factors like price, size, weight, ergonomics, etc when picking gear.

    • @harvgreenberg3031
      @harvgreenberg3031 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BoorayPerry I respectfully disagree. Good enough image quality is a phrase I hear quite often amongst those who shoot with a crop sensor. Color gradation and tonality are two characteristics of photographs that can be discerned and there are noticeable differences amongst current generation cameras. This is particularly true when comparing full frame with crop sensors or even more dramatically, medium format vs. crop sensors. Depending on the market you work in, not all clients are going to be as forgiving as you suggest.

      What do you like about the Canon images better than Fuji?

    • @creativevisiongaming

      @@BoorayPerry For one thing I don't like how people look. It's just my personal preference, but people just look smaller to me, maybe it's just because of the crop sensor and wide angle lens, but that can't be the only explanation because I have used canon crop camera's in the past and don't remember that seeing people like that.. It's not just my photos but ever time I google search portraits taken on any X mount, people look smaller. I don't know how else to describe. It's like when I were new stronger glasses, everything is clear but it just looks proportionally smaller compared to no glasses.
      But the main reason being I like the colors even on my 5D classic, they just look more natural and seem to match what my eye sees. I'm not a big fan of the film simulations and I don't edit my photos that much, only in select situations. It's cool to have them, but the only one I've been happy with is the black and white one. Also I've used film several times, usually just Kodak Ektar and Portra. Other than some more grain and the film look and skin tone my differ slightly sometimes, my photos were not that different than what I can my 5D. I'm using Provia slide film right now so I'll see how that comes out and how it compares to film simulations.
      Also even with an AA filter my photos from Canon images still seem sharper.
      I don't like how Xt20 colors looks in Low light, where as with my 5D I feel I can work with the file more to fix it and that's with using raw conversion on the XT20 in camera and in Lightroom.
      I mostly use my xt20 for the 4k video. Sometimes the 5D outperformed the 5D mark ii for video and sometimes the Xt20 outperformed the 5D mark ii. It just depends on the lighting situation.
      I have the 18-55 2.8-4 lens for Fuji. Maybe I'll have a different opinion with Fuji Prime lenses?
