      I myself like old cheap cars. Shop around you could find a older Honda Toyota or Saturn. Pay cash for it. Driving around for 10 years or a hundred thousand miles. Nothing ever is too expensive to fix on them. Drove my 25-year old Saturn from Denver to Albuquerque and back. No problem

    They were a different kind of company with a different kind of car. It was more than a well built American car, it was a movement. Saturn treated their customers like human beings, like family even. They went far above and beyond to be helpful and of service to their customers and the community too. I’ve owned 7 Saturns and if I never buy another make of car, I’ll be fine with my Saturns. Yup, they were that good. 💯

    My cousin owns a very expensive car and a 1998 SL1. He keeps the Saturn because it gets surprisingly good gas mileage, it's reliable and it's cheap, so he can throw it around without true worry of wrecking it. If he does, he can nab a new one for under 1k.

    My car is a 2002 Saturn SL1, it's automatic but it's got manual windows and locks. The AC and heater works great, but the AC takes a lot of gas and power out of my car. When I first got it it vibrated so bad on the right rear view mirror but we fixed it so not so bad. Honestly it's a GREAT first car, low insurance and low registration cost. It does have issues every so often but most of the time they're little things that can be easily fixed.

    I just got a 2002 Saturn SL1 today for $800. The owner said that it had brand new tires that had less than 1 month of driving time on them, that it had a new battery, that the bumper was a little bent up. Well when I went to purchase the vehicle I did notice that it did have brand new tires on it, that the bumper was more messed up then what the owner had originally told me. Well long story short, I drive it 30 miles back home, I turn it off for maybe 1 minute (literally), I go to turn it back on, turns out the battery was 5 fucking years old, was completely dead. I even had a friend of mine bring his diesel truck over that has 2 fucking batteries to try, jump start my new car...well it did not work. So now I have to fork out a good $100 just to get a good battery. All in all it has very good performance, VERY good gas mileage around 29-30-mpg city, 40-mpg highway.

You are right about the stereo being awesome. I swear that car does not want to die. The newer Saturns did not have the plastic body panels. Great video as always Kyle.

  • @scoschegn
    @scoschegn 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The car is actually decent in a crash. Just because the outside is plastic doesn't mean it is weak. The panels are fastened to a "cage" of sorts that is protective in an accident. You are spot on about how it just "feels" cheap. They are like a Fisher Price car, cheap and plastic, but quite durable and can take a beating.

    6 years Ago I had a 75 mile commute each way From Manteca,CA to Foster City, Ca. I traded my old Jeep cherokee (120K) for a Saturn SL1 (2001). This was one of the best cars I ever had for reliability and fuel efficiency. All I did was put gas in it and oil changes every 3000 miles. I drove it to work and back and the car ran like a champ. I gave it to my son as his first car and he drove it for 2 years than sold it for money to go live in new york. It's funny

    I have an 01 sl1. Bought it at impound auction. I don't have credit so I had been renting a car by the week on my debit card. I settled for this cause it was within my budget. Rattled and vibrated like crazy, and had a check engine light. Thanks to the internet I learned of an OBD tester. Found a $20.00 one at wallmart, then learned it was an egr fault. Found richpin on utube and learned how to fix. Went to lkq and found one for $38.00 with warranty. Installed and car has run sweetly since. Has passed smog twice, no problem. I travel 30miles to work one way(8miles street 22fwyx2, 60mls total. I get 30 miles to the gallon total. The more I bing watch videos on these cars the more I love mine. I think it's time I show it some love and appreciation with the money it's saved me. It deserves some pampering.
    Thanks for the post.

Saturn is known for its safety. the plastic is an innovation to keep you from little dings and dents, just bounces back. also, someone keyed my car and the plastic is the same colour all the way through so i cant see it. i was in an accident in a saturn, im ok.

      Saturns were some of the best GM cars in my opinion, but only the S-Series. I have had one since the early 90's, and it has NEVER quit on me once. Over 200k on the clock, only repair was the alternator at 100k. The engine is still smooth, and the AC blows cold. These later models look a little cheaper in my opinion, but still incredible value and reliability. P

    I dunno if you got one yet but: There is no such thing as an SL1 coupe. Saturn had (for this general style) two models. The SL1/2 (Sedan SOHC/DOHC) and the SC1/2 (Coupe SOHC/DOHC). As for it being a good starter car: YES. One of the best. Cheap insurance, great on gas, fun to drive, run forever. I would recommend getting the DOHC (SL2/SC2) if you get one though. The SOHC gets about 5-6 better MPG but it's a -lot- slower.

    My wife and I both own(ed) 2002 Saturn SL1s, hers was identical to this one (even the color) except for also having automatic windows. Good, reliable cars, but we decided to put hers down earlier this week because it needed $1,000+ work of transmission work. Even at less than 100K miles, we just decided it was time to retire it. Mine still runs pretty well though: it's a manual in every way (shifting, windows, even doors LOL) and I'll probably keep it a few more years if it continues to behave. :)
    FYI, she ended up going with a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback (sport touring). Should be a pretty sizable upgrade in every department except for maybe gas mileage.

      I got a 1998 With 187xxx miles for 1300 and it's a nice little car. I got 250 miles full to a little under half a tank :D so far it's been a great car other than it needing some oil here and there

    This cars main competition is the Civic. You can either pay $5000 and get a 1999 Civic with 150k, or you can wise up and get any year SL/SC, get better MPG, beat them in a race, have lower miles, and save money.

    In like 2001 when I was born my mom had the same 2001 Saturn sl1 and my dad had a 2002 Kia Rio lx my first car was the Saturn but it had a oil leak and at 265000 miles it gave up so I junked it and bought a Miata

    You serious? It was a GENIUS idea. I got into an accident on my driver side and it was with a 05-ish Chryler van. I literally just bounced off their van. Their headlight came out and bumper was half off. The door frame bent a lil on my car so I replaced the whole door for $45 lol I like it though.

    Basic as you can get it my dad's(soon to be my) 2002 rust bucket cavalier, manual door locks, manual windows, CD player, that's it. Although, we know that it is all metal body paneling seeing as it is getting your classic 90's-early 2000's General Motors rust(around the bottom of the door up to the front, under the fuel cap spilling out of the door now, etc.

      That only works for 1st and 2nd gens. 3rd gen (as shown) the sl1 and sl2 had color matched bumper covers and the sl (fleet spec) had grey plastic bumpers.

    • @Alexscott100
      @Alexscott100 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it's a SL1 in 2000-2002 the SL had black bumpers and door handles the SL1 had black door handles and the SL2 had body colored door handles and bumpers. Each trim level has its own hubcaps and or optional alloy wheels

    Cheapiness? 'Wouldn't want to get in an accident'? The reason the car can be made of plastic is because it has a full space-frame understructure. It has a more robust design than essentially any car on the road today. Unfortunately, GM fired Saturn's engineers as soon as they got what they wanted. So much for small business...

    No... I actually had a '94 Accord. I could give a shit what you drive, or what you and your friend just bought. Car had just under 300k on the clock and still ran strong. And I still stand by what I say. There was nothing interior wise in my Honda that made me go "WOW, this is SO much better than any other car I've driven and/or owned." Yes, it was nice. They were soft touch in the same spots, and both had equal fit. Nothing was/is loose on either.
