I mean I could list a ton of albums he worked on and artists he worked with, but one most people would know, is that he produced The Beatles album Let It Be and worked with the Ronnetes producing their classic/influential track Be My Baby in 1963. Despite that, he threw it all away and became a drug addict who murdered an innocent woman. Sad...

I see a lot of comments that say something along the lines of "Why don't I know of him if he was so big in music? I know a lot of early music". You're mistaken, and let me educate you.
He was a producer, and he completely revolutionized the way that albums are recorded. He reinvented hundreds of recording/mixing/mastering techniques, and worked with Tina Turner, The Beatles, The Righteous Brothers, The Ronettes, Lonard Cohen, John Lennon, The Ramones. and many others.
His influence can be directly felt in almost every album in the late 1960s, the 1970s, and through early 80s.
He was the biggest thing in music, in some ways. And I'm so sad how awful of a person he was, but I can't deny he is responsible for some of the best music I love.

Nothing excuses or justifies his behaviour to people, especially that poor young woman, Lana. And to badmouthe her character and morals, in order to make himself look better…what a despicable, rotten, weak, and pathetic individual. Yes, he was a sufferer of abuse growing up, but so are many, and they cope in other ways, not all acceptable, of course, but it’s appalling that anybody thinks that they had to accept or excuse him because of his skills. Not only that, the Phil's parents themselves were children of first cousins. If you read the history of Jewish arranged marriages you'll see that this was a common thing for the hired matchmakers called shadkhans. This helps explain the biological basis for the unstable albeit capable Spectors, all the generations involved in the case of Phil. Note also the physical resemblence of Phil to The Gollum in The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Itself a reference to the Judaism entity the Golem. Phil fit both characters to a 'T'.

I remember being younger and watching Metalocalypse, and seeing the character they based off of him...I was like "how can any human be this bizarre?" And then found out more and was like "oh this is tame compared to what he did in real life"
Thanks for covering this story in such a detailed and respectful way 💜 Lana did not deserve this fate, and her memory will be celebrated - and Phil's will be ground in to the mud for eternity, as it should be.

I remember learning about Phil Spector and the Wall of Sound in music lessons in secondary school. I thought it was beautiful. We had a brilliant music teacher who single handedly taught an entire class of 30 odd kids to read music and play the descant recorder. He did the school choir and orchestra (giving his time after school freely. His classroom was open house at lunchtime. He made available other instruments we could borrow indefinitely and got free weekly music lessons for us from the County music service. And he wasn't the only one. We had two amazing art teachers, English teachers, PE, gymnastics, trampolining who all gave their time and expertise and knowledge so generously. I have internalised them all and they go with me in life. Going back to Phil Spector, I think genius and madness is an unstable combination and may sometimes add up to self destructive behaviour or hurt/abuse of others (or all of the above). And then add in substance abuse. Terrible conduit for evil. I have no doubt Spector killed Lana and it sounds more like a macabre experiment, display of power, imagined immunity from consequences and a total disregard for another's right to life and safety rasher than an accident or suicide. I think victim blaming is the final insult. RIP Lana.

I wasn't alive during Phil Spector's heyday in the music industry. I've only ever known him as a record producer turned murderer. In pretty much every article I've read about the crime, the murder is framed as something that was a complete surprise. It's just sad that apparently multiple people knew for years that he was violent and even abusive, yet because he could make hits, it was either ignored or just accepted as "part of the deal" when working with him. I really appreciate that this helped me learn more about Lana. Whenever I've read or seen things about this case before, Lana is treated as a failed actress or basically a background character. This is how a lot of the animation/film/music industry still run, these sort of nepotism-based systems where you have to "know people" to "get ahead" are the perfect breeding ground for mentalities like Spector's as well as people like him. People are perfectly complacent in seeing this sort of treatment toward others take place, because it's not them in that moment and they're more worried about their own place in the industry than sticking up for another person. There's even a scene at the end of the film even before the movie starts shown in a snippet where Ronnie Barzell goes on a homicidal rampage shooting two lesbian lovers, one gets shot point blank in the face. Phil Spector was no stranger to brandishing a gun and eventually shooting Lana Clarkson in the face.
